“I don’t like it.” Monster grumbles, his eyes flicking to the rear view mirror, looking between the girl and me.
“Noted.”
Silence envelops the small space as Kitty attempts to talk to the girl but receives no response.
“She’s mute,” I inform her.
The girl squirms under the attention of all the eyes that fall upon her.
“Do we drop her off somewhere?” Cutter asks, frowning.
The girl slips her hand into mine, squeezing pleadingly. “No, we take her home with us.”
There’s a brief pause before Monster says, “Well, shit.”
We follow his gaze as we pull into the motel. Bikes surrounded by their riders fill my line of sight and my heart races.

Callan.
“What’s the plan now?” Cutter snaps.
I climb over Kitty and out the door before I can even think of an excuse to use. Racing toward Callan, his eyes track every step I take, filled with wild fury as he takes in my state of undress and bruised face. I fly into his chest and sob. One of his arms wraps tightly around my body, his heavy breathing filling my ear.
Suddenly, I hear the distinct sound of a gun cocking, and his voice rumbles against my body. “You have five fucking seconds to explain yourself.”
A wave of panic slices through me. I pull back to look at him, but he isn’t focused on me. His gaze and weapon are aimed at Monster. Who is standing in front of the SUV illuminated by the headlights.
“One.”
“Callan,” I say, my voice trembling.
“Two.”
“Callan,” I say more firmly.
“Three.”
“It wasn’t his fault.”
“Four.”
“Callan,” I attempt to pull his arm down, but he remains firm and unyielding.
“Five.”
“CALLAN.”
