“What about you, Nurse Ratchet… you eat something with that kambooka crap in it or dig up some twigs to munch on when you’re out on one of those long walks of yours?” Walter asked.

I didn’t bother correcting Walter about the pronunciation of kombucha because he liked pronouncing it wrong to try and get a rise out of me.

“Walter,” an exasperated Ford began.

Everyone’s eyes were on me except for Theo’s. He was moving his food around on his plate. I waited several long seconds. Sure enough, the silence had Theo looking up. I held his gaze as I said, “I’m not much of a milk man either.”

Sparks lit up my insides as Theo stared at me. His mask slipped away for the briefest of seconds and I swore I saw the corners of his mouth tug into what could have been the beginning of a smile—a real one—but it didn’t last.

I turned my attention to Walter and said, “Not twigs, Walter. I prefer the roots.” I grabbed a meatball and held my fork in the air as I added, “I guess you do too, with the way you suck down those protein shakes I make for you.” I popped the meatball into my mouth as everyone began laughing except for Walter. He was beet red.

“I’ll suck you down, you—” he said as he waved his fist at me.

“No, you will not!” Lenny interjected.

“Ew, gross,” Riley lamented.

“Walter!” Ford exclaimed. Now his cheeks were the ones that were beet red.

Walter seemed confused at first and then he turned to his lover. “Now honey, you know your dong is the only one I wanna—”

“Please, for the love of God, don’t finish that sentence!” Cam practically shouted.

Puddles, who’d been sitting quietly on Walter’s lap, began yapping excitedly. “It’s okay Princess,” Walter assured the little white dog. “Your daddies ain’t really mad.” He began feeding her noodles.

“Jesus, Walter, not at the table,” Cam griped.

“Well, I ain’t gonna wait till after we’re done eatin’ to make sure my man knows what’s what,” Walter snapped. To Lenny he lovingly said, “He ain’t got nothing on you in the dong department.” Walter jerked his head at me.

Ford dropped his forehead to his arm while Cam threw his arms up in the air. “Walter!”

“I think he meant Puddles,” Riley commented.

“Puddles ain’t got no dong,” Walter responded. He looked at Theo who was sitting next to him. “You getting what’s got ’em all in an uproar?”

Theo laughed out loud. A real laugh. A fucking real laugh. The kind of laugh you felt everywhere.

“No sir, I don’t believe I do,” Theo managed to say.

I studied Theo as the conversation continued about dongs—mine in particular and how Walter knew anything about it to begin with. I was caught off guard when Theo turned his head to look at me. In that moment it was just me and him—the real him—at that table. He had a soft smile on his lips and his cheeks were filled with color. When he glanced in the direction of my lap and then ripped his gaze upward when he realized what he’d done, I wanted to laugh out loud.

But my dick was too busy responding to all the lascivious acts I pretended were running through his head.

Theo dropped his attention back to his plate even as the wild conversation went on around him. I did the same yet couldn’t help but sneak glances his way. He’d rolled a decent amount of noodles onto his fork. The internal war going on inside of him was painful to watch but when the fork disappeared into his mouth and came out empty, I wanted to celebrate like my favorite football team had just won the Super Bowl.

I forced myself to keep my attention on the men who were arguing around me but every few seconds, I’d glance toward Theo and find him filling his fork again and again.

“Are you calling our baby girl fat?” Walter shouted at Ford. There wasn’t any real anger behind the question. With Walter, there usually wasn’t. He was cranky and crotchety, and I was glad for it. It meant he had a lot of life in him left to live and that he was a fighter. He and Lenny would be enjoying each other’s dongs for years to come.

Before Ford could answer, Lenny dragged Walter’s wheelchair closer and then pressed a hard kiss against his startled lips. “I’m tired, aren’t you, sweetheart?” Lenny asked Walter. The look that passed between the two men had Walter passing Puddles off to an unsuspecting Riley.

“Night, all,” Walter said loudly as he began maneuvering his wheelchair back from the table. Lenny helped him get free of the table then paused long enough to lean down and whisper something in Walter’s ear. Despite the man being nearly eighty, there was no missing the lust in his eyes right before he snatched his plate full of spaghetti and held it on his lap. He didn’t grab his fork.
