With that, I turned to Sam, arching an eyebrow at him. I was done with that conversation. If Tristan wanted to continue having anything to do with Adelaide, he had better heed my fucking warning.

“Any news on Red?” I asked him. I’d been patiently waiting for Red to pop up. Normally, he would have by now. He was taking his time, and it had me on edge.

Dad hadn’t even called me to warn me that Red was in town like he normally did. Red always stopped in to see Dad. No matter the bad blood between me and Red, we set it aside for our father.

Sam shook his head. “Nothing yet. He’s laying low… wherever the fuck he’s at.”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, pulling up my dad’s number to shoot him a text. I knew he would make sure the message got relayed to Red.

River:

Tell Red I said to get the fuck out of my town before I come to hunt him down. This is his only warning, Dad. He fucked with my woman once, and I won’t put it past him to do it again.

With that, I slid my phone back into my pocket. Adelaide stepping into the bar room caught my attention. A pair of black slip-on shoes were on her feet with a pair of short, blue shorts and a plain, black t-shirt, her hair swept up into a ponytail. She walked around the bar to me, and as soon as she was within my reach, I drew her against me, pressing a kiss to her temple. She sighed softly, drawing in the comfort that I was offering her before she looked up at me. “I’ve got a shift at the bar.”

I blew out a breath, thinking of Red. I didn’t like her working while I didn’t know what the fuck was going on with Red, but I knew she would fight me and do what she wanted if I tried holding her here at the clubhouse where I knew she was safe. That independent streak of hers might eventually give me gray hairs, but I never wanted her to lose it. I’d seen what happened to her when she lost it, and I never wanted to see her like that again.

Reaching up, I rubbed her bottom lip with the pad of my thumb, my other arm locking around her waist to hold her against me. “If I let you work tonight, you have to understand that Sam and I will be there with a few other club members to keep you protected,” I warned her, attempting to make her a deal.

She nodded. “Understood,” she told me, not putting up a fight.

All it took was a compromise. Adelaide wasn’t a hard person to please. You just had to understand her.

Leaning down, I pressed my lips to hers in a soft, quick kiss before I pulled my bike keys out of my pocket. With her hand in mine, I led her outside to my bike, knowing Sam was following close on my heels with Vern and Joseph.

I would let her work, let her have whatever freedom I could while still being able to protect her.

I sent Tristan a dark look over my shoulder as we walked out of the clubhouse, a silent warning for him to stay the fuck away from my woman for the remainder of his stay here.

He might now be an ally for my club, but if he kept fucking up with her, I would destroy our alliance and fucking kill him with my bare hands. Adelaide would heal from the loss of him, but if he kept reopening the wounds inside of her, she’d forever bleed.

Chapter Ten

Adelaide

Iglared at the greasy-haired scumbag that tossed his empty beer bottle at me, making it shatter on the floor at my feet when I jumped back to avoid being hit with it. “Watch yourself!” I barked at him. “Throwing your fucking beer bottle at me isn’t going to make me get you a fresh one. It’s only going to make me bust the fresh bottle over your fucking head.”

Men like him walked into these bars, acting as if they were a fucking god. They saw a woman like me and instantly thought that I was some nervous little bitch who would trip over her feet to please him.

He had the wrong bitch that night.

He narrowed his eyes at me in a threatening manner. I wanted to laugh because not only was I dangerous by myself, but I knew River would fucking slaughter someone over me. Pretty sure he had already, but that wasn’t a conversation we were willing to talk about.

Rodney was done and over with.

“You better watch yourself, girly, before I make you lose this job, and I ruin your fucking life,” he threatened.

I leaned on the bar, a humorless smirk twisting my lips as I got in his personal space. Joke was on him. I was the old lady of the bar owner. As long as I wanted this job, I had it.
