“So, what are you doing after breakfast?” Klaus asked.

“I was hoping to spend the day with Poppy.” Greg offered her a warm smile, and Klaus had to clench his hand into a fist to calm himself. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Swallowed a large lump.” I’m stopping myself from going to war with your pack, which would be so easy, and I could pound your fucking face in. If you look at my mate again, I’m going to kill you.

He didn’t know where these thoughts and feelings were coming from.

“Son, this is dangerous. You should have come to me. How irresponsible can you be?”

“Dad, it is fine.”

“No, it is not. You’re in an unmated situation where you’re living with your mate. You’re close to her. You don’t think there would be consequences?”

“We’re taking it slow.”

“There is no such thing as slow, Klaus. There is steady that explodes into chaos between you. This is dangerous, for the both of you, and to make matters worse, we have another pack with unmated males, and that can make it even worse.”

Klaus was very much aware of how much worse it could be.

He’d promised his father he would have total control, but there was only so much that he could do before he completely … flipped.

His pancakes were all gone, and he listened to Greg attempting to flirt with Poppy. It was pitiful.

“I’ll come with the two of you. I’ve got nothing else to do,” he said. “I can keep you both company.”

He’d also be able to keep a safe distance between the two and hopefully preserve his sanity.

He hoped. He doubted it would happen.

One look at Poppy, and he knew they were heading toward screwed.

Chapter Ten

They were screwed.

Poppy didn’t need to be a genius to figure that one out. Their time of being on the easy train was fast running out. They were so fucked.

Greg’s warning made a whole lot of sense. Her developing feelings toward Klaus made more sense to her. Their need to mate was taking over. It was why she was constantly aroused when he was near.

It wasn’t good, but she had a reasoning for it.

Spending the day with Greg and with Klaus didn’t exactly help matters. Greg kept trying to get close to her, and Klaus, being her mate, didn’t accept that. He tried to keep them apart, and she was grateful for that.

She didn’t want to be close to Greg. No, she wanted Klaus.

Poppy had to stop herself multiple times from wrapping her arms around Klaus, sniffing him, kissing him, and wanting him.

Her body had gone from warm to hot within a matter of minutes. She had to control herself. To take deep breaths. Not panic.

After enjoying lunch and then dinner with the two men, she made her way home and hung out with her mom, trying to act like everything was normal when it wasn’t.

She waited until everyone was distracted, sneaking out of the house and heading into the forest.

Klaus had given her a napkin, asking her to meet him at the spot. She figured he meant their spot. The space where they first realized they were each other’s mates.

Stepping through the forest, she climbed over falling trees and across twigs and thorns, coming to a stop where she had realized Klaus was her one true mate.

Poppy wrapped her arms around her waist, trying to comfort herself.

She breathed in deeply and knew he wasn’t too far away. “Don’t scare me, Klaus,” she said.

“I wasn’t going to scare you.” He stepped out from behind a tree. “I didn’t know if you were going to make it.”

“Of course, I was going to make it. Don’t you think we need to talk?” she said.

“About what Greg said this afternoon?”

“Yes. I can … feel it, Klaus. Even now I want—” She didn’t know if she could confess to feeling this way. It wasn’t wrong. Of course, it wasn’t, but this was Klaus.

A bully. Her enemy. Her mate.

“You want what?” he asked.

“I want you. I can’t make it stop and I don’t want to,” she said. There, that was out in the open.

“You don’t want to make these feelings stop?” Klaus asked. He continued to take steps toward her, closing the gap that had built between them. She licked her lips, watching him move.

Her nipples tightened. Her pussy got slick.

She was so aroused. She wanted him.

Take him.

There were too many clothes.

Within seconds, he was in front of her. He pressed his face against her neck, and she moaned, gasping as he breathed in deep. Klaus kissed her neck, sliding his tongue back and forth across her pulse. She gasped again, arching up against him.

He wrapped his arms around her, and that felt so good. The only problem for her was that they had clothes on.

Grabbing his shirt, she tore it off his back and threw it to the ground. She hadn’t been gentle.
