She pulled her hand free of his and turned toward the kitchen. “I don’t think anyone’s ever asked me out in a laundry room before.”

He chuckled as he followed her to the island. “Speaking of which, I noticed the shelf was fixed. I guess you got someone to come over this morning and fix it.” He hoped his jealousy didn’t leak out with that partial inquiry.

“Nope.”

He furrowed his brow and tipped his head to one side as she reached under the island and then lifted a cordless screwdriver. “I’m not inept.”

He grinned. “Of course, you’re not. I have no idea why I assumed you’d found someone else to do it. That was sexist of me.”

She wiggled her brows. “Did it in a skirt and heels, too. I’m an independent, resourceful woman.” She lifted a small pink tool box next and set it on the island so she could tuck the power tool inside.

If it was possible, he liked her even more. He also wondered if under that efficient, high-powered woman existed a Little girl who enjoyed putting all that aside in the evenings and letting someone take care of her.

It was obvious she could and would take care of herself at all times, but he hoped she had another side, too. He really believed that under her tough exterior lay a Little girl who could let her guard down, crawl into his lap, and relax.

Maybe she knew that about herself. Maybe she didn’t. But the more time Wyatt spent with her, the more confident he felt that he was right. As he pondered that hopeful possibility, Lark grabbed her purse and draped it over her shoulder. She pulled out her keys. “Okay. I’m ready.”

He grinned. From her keyring dangled a tiny stuffed Eeyore. The blue donkey-shaped body with the tacked-on tail gave away her secret. The carefully tied ribbon bow on the tail confirmed it. Lark had a Little side. He just needed to help pull it out so she could take flight.

Chapter Three

Do I let him follow me home? It’s not like he can’t look me up in the police system to find out where I live. Mentally shrugging as she decided not to make a big deal out of it, Lark locked the door behind them.

“I’m anticipating getting an offer on the house from one couple. You’ll be okay if I have to make a few calls while we’re together?” Lark checked with Wyatt.

“Not a problem. I know you have business to take care of. Someone liked the house, huh?”

“A young couple was already figuring out where to put their furniture. That alone is a giant indicator they want the house. The smiles on their faces as they checked out every little detail of the house and their comments had clued me in that this was their one.”

“Is that what you like most about your job? Finding the right family for a house?” Wyatt asked as he opened her car door.

“Even the most bizarre house has a perfect match. I can tell you stories,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“I’d like to hear them.”

Studying his face, Lark believed him. He wasn’t just pandering to her because he wanted to get her in bed. Wyatt really wanted to be someone she talked to. Lark smiled at him. Sexy and sweet.

“They said it was the house they’d dreamed of owning. They’d even mentioned there was enough room to finally get the cat they’d wanted. I’ll bet Pebbles will be dropping in to visit again. I can’t believe a cat frightened me. Especially one named Pebbles,” she admitted before sliding into the car.

“Those felines can be crafty. Put on your seatbelt. Drive safely. I’ll follow you home so you can throw on some jeans.” Wyatt closed her door, pausing by the side of the car until he saw her fasten the buckle.

Lark tried not to be nervous but failed miserably. What was it about having a police officer follow you that instantly raised your blood pressure? She exhaled through pursed lips when she pulled into her garage. With a quick wave, Lark disappeared into her house after triggering the automatic door to lower behind her car.

Debating in her head whether she should have invited him in, Lark knew she needed a few minutes alone to gather herself. Wyatt’s presence would fill her house completely, keeping her on edge. She’d just be fast to avoid being too rude.

Five minutes later, she brushed her hair and pulled it up into a ponytail. Her jeans and casual top matched his attire. Lark paused to roll on some pink lip gloss before grabbing her purse and keys. She paused to smooth her clothes into place before taking a calming breath and opening the door.

Wyatt stood lounging outside of his sedan. Hands in his pockets, he was looking around at her quiet neighborhood. Damn, he looks good. At the sound of the screen door opening, he turned to look at her with a smile that reflected in his twinkling eyes.
