“Thank you,” Sue responded, all choked up again.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Ellie exclaimed as she released Sue and headed back to the register.

Sue was glad there were no other customers in the shop at that moment, and she stayed quiet as she let her Daddy lead her out the door and toward the gym.

She was pleased with how much her life had changed in the last few days, but she was also scared. Could she be lucky enough to have really found the perfect man for her? She hadn’t ever thought she would find a Daddy. It was scary and exciting at the same time.

“You’re awfully quiet, Cherry,” Davis said after they’d entered the gym and then his office. He shut the door and locked it before setting the box of cupcakes on the desk and taking her into his arms.

“Just thinking,” she informed him, forcing a smile.

“I can understand that. You’ve had a very eventful day. I bet you’ll feel better after a nice nap.”

She shook her head. “I don’t need a nap, Daddy.” She hadn’t had a nap in…she couldn’t even remember when she’d last had a nap. “Naps are for babies.”

Sue wondered if he was serious. He’d mentioned her napping in her nursery. She also knew Garrett made Ellie nap. All the Daddies she knew spoke of napping sometimes. Did Davis really mean for her to sleep in the day?

Davis chuckled. “Naps are for all Little girls, especially when they’ve had very busy days that exhaust them emotionally.”

Sue shook her head. “I’ll just read or something while you work out.” She snapped her fingers. “I should have grabbed a book from the car.”

Davis guided her around the desk and pointed at the chair. “You’ll sit right here while I get a few things from the car, and then you’ll do as Daddy says.”

Sue shivered as she saw his serious expression.

He lifted a brow, seemingly waiting for a response.

She licked her lips. “Yes, Sir.”

“Good girl.” He pointed at the cupcakes. “You can eat your cupcake after your nap so the sugar doesn’t keep you awake.”

She sighed as he left her sitting there. She stared at the box of cupcakes on the desk, considering opening it and sinking her teeth into one of them anyway.

She was a grown woman who didn’t need a man to tell her what to do or when to eat a cupcake. He’d said himself that she’d earned the sweet treat after the day she’d had so far.

What was he going to do about it?

Suddenly, she really wanted to find out. It felt important to test him. Surely he couldn’t really mean to keep her forever. She was a lot of work. He would grow tired of her eventually and change his mind.

She almost cried again at the thought of Davis leaving her just like Troy had left her. As the tears welled up, instead of letting them take over, she lurched forward and snagged the box of cupcakes.

Her hands were shaking as she opened the lid, reached inside, and lifted her favorite flavor out of the box. She peeled the wrapper down on one side and took a huge bite, moaning around the delicious flavor as she slowly chewed and swallowed the sweet confection.

A moment later, the door opened and Davis returned. His arms were full of various things he’d brought in from the car. As soon as he shut the door and saw her, he froze.

Sue swallowed the last of her bite and set the cupcake down in the box. Her decision suddenly felt like a very bad one. Judging by the look on his face, he was disappointed.

The stupid tears that had hovered in the corners of her eyes a few minutes ago returned with a vengeance and ran down her cheeks. Why had she decided to be so naughty? What if he really did decide she wasn’t worth it and broke up with her?

Daddy quietly set his armload of items on the desk and lowered himself onto the loveseat in his office. “Come here, Cherry,” he ordered, his voice firm but oddly not angry.

She hesitated a moment before standing and shuffling toward him. “I’m sorry, Daddy,” she said before he had a chance to speak.

He angled her between his legs and gripped her hips, tipping his head back to meet her gaze.

Tears were falling rapidly down her cheeks now.

“Tell Daddy what’s going through your mind, Cherry.”

She was shocked by how calm he was.

She lifted her hands to swipe at the tears, sucking back sobs that hadn’t had a chance to escape yet. She somehow managed to shrug, unable to speak.

“I’m in no hurry. We can stay here all day if that’s what you need to pull your thoughts together, but you will tell Daddy what you were thinking when you deliberately defied my order.”
