“Mira and I have something to say,” Audrey says.
“Excuse me?” Brooks asks, shaking his head.
Mira laughs. “Hartley and I, and Brooks and Audrey have something to say.”
I gasp. “You’re pregnant!”
“No!” Gianna wraps Mira into a hug. “You’re pregnant?”
“We’re due a month apart,” Audrey says. “That’s why we got married so quickly. I wanted to do it before we got too far along.”
I point at my sister. “And you didn’t tell me first?”
“I tried,” she says. “But you got engaged and I didn’t want to steal that from you. And then things just kept happening and Audrey and I accidentally figured it out.”
Audrey giggles. “That’s a story for another day.”
“Did you tell Lolly?” I ask, turning to Audrey. “Does your mom know?”
Audrey nods.
“I told Lolly today,” Mira says. “She lost her ever-loving mind.”
I laugh. “I bet she did.”
Astrid sighs. “I’m not getting left out.”
“What do you have to tell us?” Gianna asks, tucking herself into Drake’s side.
Gray grins. “We’re going to Vegas to get married tomorrow.”
“What?” I ask. “Why?”
Astrid scoffs. “I don’t have it in me to plan another wedding.”
We all laugh, thinking about her antics during Audrey’s.
“And I don’t have it in me to wait any longer,” Gray says, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. “I want to get to the baby making part, too.”
“If you need a witness, we can go,” Gianna says. “I love Vegas.”
Nettie raises her hand. “Here’s my news.” She looks around, smiling. “I am not getting married and I am not pregnant, thank God.”
“No, but you have a reverse harem thing going on, so you just keep on living that life, girl,” Gianna says, before Drake nips at her ear, making her laugh.
The flames dance, the oranges and blues looking livelier than they did a few moments ago. It’s as if they’re happy for all of us, too.
Fireflies twinkle in the distance as Hartley and Drake show Gianna the pen that they’ve been secretly building for a couple of weeks. Brooks and Audrey whisper things back and forth that make her cheeks turn pink. Nettie excuses herself for an appointment, which means she’s meeting the fighters for round number … who knows. And Mira and Astrid chat about the ranch and what they’ll do for Cathy’s birthday next week.
Gray grabs a beer and takes a seat beside Jory.
This is most definitely not the life I imagined just a few months ago, but I can see now that this was exactly the life meant for me.
I found—and get to keep—my unicorn, the man who might still disappoint me from time to time, as, let’s face it, he’s also human. But I trust him. Implicitly. We’re going to build an amazing life together and I can’t wait for it to begin.
Because when there’s trust, when someone intentionally works at being your person, at making your needs his priority, expectations ease and joy remains.
No begging required.
