A smile forms on my face. “Oh … decided you’re going to fight me now? Exciting.”
“I don’t want to, but I will if I have to.”
My eyes narrow.
Why do I recognize that voice?
He throws one of his knives at me, and it flicks against a rock beside me. “Missed.”
“Don’t come near me,” he growls.
“Or what? You were the one who came looking for me. Well, here I am, bitch,” I scoff.
“I brought you your target. What more do you want?”
“Well, for one, I wanna know who’s stalking me,” I reply, playing with my knife. “Second, I work on my own.”
I throw my knife, but he reflects it with a new one of his own that he just pulled out of his second pocket. Damn, I’m surprised he came prepared. He’s got skills. I’m impressed.
“Then fight with him, not with me. I’m not your enemy,” he says.
“You made yourself my enemy the moment you involved yourself in my business.”
I throw another knife, but he keeps dodging them like he’s been trained, and something about that just doesn’t sit right with me.
Suddenly, he turns around and bolts off into the woods. He’s quick for a small fucker, but I’ll get him.
He passes a tree, and I throw a knife so hard it pins his bag to the bark.
“Fuck!” he screams, tearing off a piece of his bag as he pulls away.
But the second he’s freed, I tackle him to the ground. He spins onto his back and attempts to crawl away, but I stomp on his chest with my heel, and he muffles a groan which sounds more like a strangled moan.
His hands suddenly wrap around my ankle, my eyes immediately focusing on his, and time seems to pass slowly as he seems to turn into a puddle underneath my foot.
What the …?
“Sunny,” he murmurs.
How does he know my name?
Grinding my teeth, I remove my foot, shaking him off to straddle him instead. “You’re mine now.”
I shove a knife underneath his throat.
“No, no, no,” he mutters, as I rip off his mask.
But my jaw drops as I stare at the one person I didn’t expect to lie underneath me, his brown hair with textured, messy layers casually falling over his bushy brows and dark doe eyes.
Xavier.
Frowning, I say, “You really didn’t learn your lesson, did you?”
CHAPTER 12
Xavier
Adrenaline spikes my blood as I attempt to crawl away from her through the mud, but she grabs my hand and shoves a knife through my shirt near my wrist, barely avoiding the skin.
“Stay.”
She grips the other hand with a ferocity I’ve never felt before, crushing my body with her weight, and I whimper from the feeling.
“Are you the one who’s been sending me these notes?” she growls in my face. She pulls a bunch of papers from her pocket and shoves them under my nose.
Sweat drips down my forehead. It’s no use lying now that I’ve been caught. “Yes. That was me.”
She sucks in a breath. “So Orion wasn’t lying …”
I frown. “That fucker can’t be trusted.”
She snarls, “You don’t decide that for me.”
“I only wanted to—”
She plants a finger on my lips, shushing me. “No. You don’t want. You do as you’re told.”
A blush creeps on my cheeks.
Fuck. My cock hardens from the sheer aggression in her tone.
I love it when she talks to me like that even though she just literally tried to kill me.
She leans sideways and snatches my bag off the muddy ground, inverting it so all the contents spill out.
“A rope, cuffs, knives, drugs. You sure came prepared.” She snorts.
Is that a question? It didn’t sound like one, so I opt to remain quiet instead of stirring the beast.
She steals the rope and wraps it around my wrist, then forces both of my hands together above my head.
“You don’t have to do this,” I mutter.
“I don’t fucking trust you not to run away from me again.”
“I won’t, I promise,” I say as she wraps the rope around and around both my wrists.
She ties the knot hard, and I mewl from the pain.
“I’ve been looking all over for you. No wonder I couldn’t find you. You were too busy snooping in my room, searching through my things. Did you find what you were looking for? Hmm?”
She leans in so close, I can feel her breath on my skin, and fuck me … it is the best thing ever.
Contain yourself, Xavier. You can handle this. Just talk your way out of it.
“Does snooping through a girl’s private phone give you a hard-on?”
I’d be lying if I told her no.
I swallow when she pushes the knife farther into my throat. “I only checked your list so I could bring you the men you wanted to kill.”
She narrows her eyes. “What, like a gift?”
I nod even though it sounds weird and very stalkerish when she says it like that.
