“What are you thinking about?” Rhys asks, coming up behind me and wrapping an arm around my shoulders.
I lean against him and tilt my head back, letting the warm rays of the sun spill across my face. “My dad,” I say, smiling. “And you.”
“Yeah?” He runs his hand down the side of my face. “What about us?”
“I was just thinking that he’s probably relieved that I chose you,” I say for his ears alone. “Look at the life and the love you’ve given me. That’s all he ever wanted for me. If he’s watching, I think he’s smiling, knowing two of the people he loves most found it together.”
“Jesus.” Rhys’s hand falls still on my cheek.
“He’s at peace now, Rhys,” I whisper. “If there was anything to forgive, I think he did it a long time ago. He’d be proud of you, you know. I’m proud of you.”
“Willow, baby girl? I need you to scoot over for a minute,” Rhys says, his eyes locked on mine, emotion blazing in their depths.
Willow obediently slides over.
As soon as she does, Rhys picks me up off the bench and spins me around. His mouth crashes down on mine, his kiss hot and hard. I weave my hands into his hair, holding him to me as he pours his devotion and pride into me, his heart pounding against my breasts.
“I love you, songbird,” he breathes against my lips.
“Forever,” I whisper back.
