Shocked and moaning, I arch my back and my hands grip the edge of the table. I don’t know why I’m acting so surprised when in the back of my mind, I did have an idea what he meant when he said he’d put his mouth on me and then spread me out on the table like I’m a feast to be had. His feast. But maybe I wasn’t expecting him to actually do it. To lick me down there, right at the center. His mouth is so hot and wet, so possessive as he sucks on me that by his third lick that sounds like a slurp, given how wet I am, I’m coming.

And I’m coming so fucking loud that even if he hasn’t told me that I could scream as much as I wanted, I still would be. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything this intense in my life, and I know I keep saying that when it comes to him but it’s the truth. Everything he does to me, every new thing, is my new favorite.

Including the fact that as my core ripples around his tongue, he creeps his hand up and gags my mouth. He lets his hand absorb all my moans and whines and screams so no one can hear how loud I am for my husband. How slutty and needy. How alive. How much I belong to him and him only, no one else.

As I’m coming down from the high, I feel him rising from between my thighs and covering my still shaking body with his. He grabs my throat with one hand, his fingers spanning the entire length of it as he demands, “Promise me. Promise you won’t run from me.”

I blink my eyes open. “I…”

“Promise you won’t run,” he demands roughly, his eyes still dark and heated. “And I promise to let you go when all of this is over.”

My hands fly off the table and grip his forearms. “You p-promise?”

His jaw clenches and he nods. “I ain’t askin’ you to trust me. I’m not that much of a monster. But once this is over, once I know you’re safe, I’ll let you go. I’ll let you be free. I’ll let you live your life. I won’t watch you. I won’t follow you. But I need this. Do you understand? I need to know you’re safe. I need that.”

I know I should be happy about this. This is what I wanted. To be free of him. To protect myself, my heart from him. But as I nod and promise not to run, I’m afraid my heart’s already gone and there’s no protecting me from him.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

IT’S A RANCH.

Our new hideout. It’s simple and modest, with a four-bedroom house that looks brand-new with a wraparound porch. A corral and a stable on one side, a barn on the other, and it’s all surrounded by rolling green plains. But the best part, and the reason why he picked it as a place for us to lie low, is because it sits in the middle of nowhere. It took us seven hours to drive out here, and the last stretch was navigating a very narrow dirt path snaking through thick woods. Which is the only way to get to this ranch. The rest of the woods are not passable. Meaning, there’s only one entrance to watch out for. That he told me he’d fit with cameras and motion detectors and whatnot.

As amazing as this place is for security purposes, I have to admit the state of it is questionable. It’s new, but it’s essentially empty. The living room only has a couple of armchairs and a little table. There’s a bookcase in that room, too, but there aren’t a lot of books in it. Only one of the bedrooms has a bed, and that bed is a simple mattress and a box spring. Along with a dresser in that room and a closet with some linens, there isn’t much else. At least the kitchen is fitted with all the appliances that can be used for cooking—not that I know much about it, but still—along with a little mudroom with a washer and a dryer.

While I don’t need much to survive, I do have concerns about this. The first one is, where did he sleep last night? Yesterday, we arrived late and I was half dead on my feet. So when he showed me to a room and told me this was where I’d be staying, I didn’t question him. I simply fell on the bed and slept till late. When I woke up, I found my breakfast in the kitchen, meaning he must’ve been hard at work while I was sleeping. And he was the one who got shot in his shoulder. Embarrassed about my laziness, I decided to be helpful. I took a quick shower; happy to find that the hot water works and so does the rest of the plumbing, and I thought cleaning up his room would be a good start. Only I couldn’t find his room because every other bedroom except for mine was empty. So I’m not really sure what we’re going to do about this.
