“That would make sense, but I don’t know how.” Keith stayed silent for a couple of moments, his expression thoughtful. “I’ll figure it out.”
“We’ll do it together.” Brian reached for his hand and twined their fingers. He had sensed something very wrong in Green Field from the moment he had entered that territory. He couldn’t imagine what his orphaned mate had endured living in that atmosphere under Rupert’s control. “You aren’t alone anymore.”
Chapter 6
Cleaning up the kitchen didn’t take long and then they headed back upstairs. “Your place or mine?” Keith said once they reached the landing. “Actually, those two need to be the same place because I’m not going to sleep apart from you. I’m assuming you don’t want to move into the guest bedroom, because otherwise, you’d have already done that.” He inhaled deeply, taking all the surrounding scents into his body. “Plus, I don’t have anything here and your things are already in your room so that one makes most sense.” He clasped Brian’s hand and walked toward his bedroom, passing by several closed doors along the way. “Is there anything embarrassing you want to hide before I go inside?” he asked, hand on the door handle. “Because if there is, you can save us both time by pointing me in the right direction so I can see it quickly.” He opened the door and walked into the room. “It’s been a long day, and you’re beat. I don’t want to keep you up late snooping when we could be spending that time getting to it in bed.”
“How did you know this is my room?”
“It smells the most like you.”
“What?” Brian scrunched his eyebrows together. “I’ve lived here for going on a year. This entire house smells like me.”
“Sure. But you spend the most hours in here and your personal things are in here, so it smells the most like you.” Keith inhaled deeply and reveled in the scent of his mate surrounding him outside and in. “You smell incredible,” he said, voice husky. He brushed his hand through Brian’s hair. “Aren’t you more interested in the other thing I said?”
“What do you mean it smells the most like me? How could you know that from the hallway?” He paused. “Getting to what in bed?”
“That’s more like it.” Keith stepped closer to his mate until they were chest-to-chest. He trembled in reaction to all that skin-on-skin contact. “You feel really good.”
“So do you.” Brian skimmed his hands over Keith’s shoulders and smoothed them down his arms. “I’m really looking forward to holding you tonight. We don’t have to do anything else. I know you’re exhausted.”
“I’m looking forward to it too. And we absolutely have to do other things.” He took hold of Brian’s hips and walked him backward toward the bed. “You’ve been prancing your sexy, naked body in front of me all night. It’s time to put out.” After a light push, Brian was sitting on the edge of the bed and Keith climbed onto his lap. “You should hold onto me or I may fall.”
As he had expected, the suggestion of any harm coming to him immediately caused Brian to wrap his arms around him. What a sweetheart.
“I like that,” Keith whispered into Brian’s ear. He kissed his way down the side of his neck and across his collarbone.
“Like what?” Brian rasped, his fingertips digging into Keith’s lower back.
“How protective you are.” He nibbled his way up to Brian’s jaw. “It’s very sweet. Makes me feel special.”
“You are special.” Brian turned his head and their lips met. “The most special person in my world.” He pressed his mouth to Keith’s, the pressure gentle. “I’ll always protect you, mate. You’ll be safe from now on.”
He was more than capable of protecting both himself and Brian, but he appreciated the sentiment, so he didn't push back. Instead, he focused on the tender kiss he was receiving. Brian’s lips opening and closing against his. Brian’s tongue licking and teasing. Brian’s breath mingling with his own. The care and intimacy brought tears to his eyes and wove lust through his body.
“Thank you,” Keith whispered.
“Why are you thanking me?” Brian asked, his voice equally low.
“I was talking to Mother Nature.” He tightened his arms around Brian’s shoulders and pressed their mouths together again. “I’ve doubted her for a long time, but being here with you, I realize she didn’t abandon me, and I’m so grateful.”
“I’m grateful too.” Brian gazed into his eyes and trailed his fingertips across his jaw. “You are so different from what I expected.” His touch tender and reverent, Brian caressed and kissed him again. “She truly blessed me.”
The sweet embrace eventually ramped up, and Keith found himself on his back, blanketed by his mate’s heat. He bucked his hips and moaned when his erection rubbed against Brian’s. Groin tight, heart racing, and lungs working overtime, he repeated the motion again and again.
