“I’m going to enjoy killing you, Donald.”

“Such fire. Get out and don’t tempt me further. I’ve never killed a child, but I’m not against it.”

Shit. I’m out of time. I grip the gun tighter and turn so I’m facing him, while bringing my gun up and aiming at him. “Back up, Donald,” I growl.

“Why, Beau, have you gained a backbone since we’ve been apart.”

“Back the fuck up,” I repeat.

“I’m not going to do it, pet,” he laughs.

“I was hoping that’d be your answer,” I respond quietly. I see the shock on his face, it settles something inside me. Then, I squeeze the trigger.

Chapter 30

BB

I’m pissed. There was salt in my gas tank. I’m on a loaner bike and it just feels wrong. I miss mine. I may be without it for a while, too, because it’s going to cost to fix my bike. Everything in me is screaming that Robin did this. The problem is, I don’t know how it’s possible. We’ve had the garages under permanent supervision. I don’t know how this happened. Hell, Robin is not that smart. I don’t see how she could do any of this shit. There’s one thing I’ve learned about Robin, it’s that her head is about two McNuggets shy of a happy meal.

My phone rings and I click the button to enable my headphones. “Speak,” I answer, knowing it’s not Beau. Her and Ty would almost be to the game by now. I hate like hell that I’m not there with them.

“Dad!” Ty yells and it sounds like he’s been crying.

“Ty? Are you okay?”

“Dad, something happened to Beau’s car, and we didn’t have brakes. You should have seen her she was awesome.”

“Son, what’s going on? Where’s Beau at?”

“She’s outside. She shot this guy who tried to take her. He threatened to kill me. She told me to call and tell you where we are. She says to send help to us now.”

Fuck. A million things run through my brain, but I ignore it for now. “Tell me where you are,” I demand, even as I wonder where in the fuck Callum and Apex are. Apex and I have buried our hatchet. I’m still uncomfortable with him being so close to her, but I trust Beau. Plus, as much as he cares about Beau, I thought he’d go all out to protect her.

So, where in the fuck is he right now?

Ty finishes telling me where he is, and I realize that they aren’t very far from the school.

“Okay, I have it. I’m going to hang up now, Ty. I’m still too far away, but I’m going to get your Grandpa and the men to come to you, okay?”

“Tell them to hurry, Dad. She said Papaw would know the guy she shot. She said to tell him that the guy’s name is Donald Ray Hyde.”

“I’ll tell him, son. You just make sure to stay safe and do what Beau tells you, okay?”

“Okay, Dad. I love you.”

“I love you too, son. I’ll call Beau back.”

“She’s awesome,” he brags once more.

“Yeah, she is,” I tell him. “I got to go now, Ty. I have to call your papaw.”

“Okay.”

“Love you.”

“Love you,” he repeats.

I hang up and I barely take a breath before I’m telling my phone to call Dad. It rings what seems like forever before he finally answers.

“Hey, Hunter, did you make it back—”

“Where the fuck is Apex and Callum?” I bark.

“What?”

“Some asshole tried to kill Beau and Ty. The men we assigned on them aren’t there and I want to know why.”

“Okay hold up. Where are Beau and Ty?” Dad asks.

“They’re at the end of the hill before you turn to go into town. Ty said they were over in the grass behind the small hill that butts up against the shoulder of the road. Send men to them now and then tell me why my woman and son don’t have anyone with them.”

“I don’t know, son. That’s something we’ll figure out. Is the man still after them? What’s the status?”

“Ty said she shot him. He said his name was Donald Ray Hyde or something like that.”

“Fuck,” Dad growls.

“Who is he, Dad?”

“I’m going to go to them. I’ll tell you everything you need to know when you get here.”

“I want to know now,” I growl.

“He was convicted of stalking, attempted rape, kidnapping, and a bunch of other shit. So, I really want to get to them. We can talk more about it later, deal?”

“You better fucking believe we’ll talk about it,” I snarl, disconnecting the call.

I’ve never felt so useless in my life. I should have never left my family unprotected. As pissed as I am at my father right now—and fuck am I pissed—I’m angrier at myself.

I need to get home. I kick up the speed on my cruise control. Then I call Beau’s cell. I need to hear her voice. I need to beg her to forgive me and then …
