How did he sound so calm? Here she was, freaking out. Although, of the two of them, she thought that she was having the normal reaction.

Cash seemed to think he was Superman or something.

Or maybe Wolverine.

Yeah. She could see that. She was a huge Wolverine fan. A bit of a gruff rebel but with a soft spot underneath.

“Let me make something clear, asshole. You don’t have a choice,” the guy snarled. “Get them both!”

As the other three men started toward them, grins of delight on their nasty faces, Cash pushed her back.

“Behind the truck. Stay there!” Then he stepped toward the closest guy and smacked his fist right into the asshole’s face.

Oh. Ouch!

That looked like it hurt. The guy bellowed and the other two men jumped on Cash. Addie screamed.

Holy heck. She hadn’t been aware she could even make that noise. And man, it hurt. Badly. She wasn’t used to talking much, let alone screaming.

Oh no. Oh no.

She had to help him! But how?

He told you to hide.

Yeah, but she couldn’t do that. Not while he was getting beaten up. Nerves shook her body as she rushed to the back of the pickup.

She knew that she’d seen a crowbar back here when she’d been hiding with Snaggles.

Snaggles!

Oh, she hoped he was safely tucked away inside the cab of the pickup because she didn’t have time to worry about him right now. But as she rounded the back of the truck and leaned in to pull off the tarp, she realized her mistake.

“Well, well, well, what have we got here? A nice piece of ass for me.”

She froze as she heard the deep voice behind her.

Oh no.

Oh no.

Where was the crowbar? Panic made her fumble around. Suddenly, she felt two hands grab her hips and haul her back, throwing her on the ground.

Addie landed with a thud, staring up at the man who smirked as he stood over her.

Why was no one else driving past to help?

Maybe because it was probably around three in the morning. It might even be closer to dawn, the sky definitely seemed lighter.

Which was unfortunate because that meant she could clearly see the evil smirk on his face.

A whimper escaped her, and that just seemed to make him more amused.

“Oh, you and me are going to have a fun time together, bitch,” he told her.

Just great. He was calling her a bitch, and he didn’t even know her. That didn’t bode well.

Bending over, he reached down to grab her. What the hell was she going to do? Cash wouldn’t come to her rescue. He was too busy trying to fight off three guys. Scrambling around with her hand, she managed to grab hold of a large rock. She drew her hand back, then smashed the rock into his eye.

He let out a roar of pain and, grasping hold of her shoulders, he picked her up and shook her like a rag doll. Addie was sure that she could feel her brain rattling around in her head.

Then he placed her down and smacked the back of his hand across her cheek. A scream of pain erupted from her, and she fell back again.

He leaned over, “Now I’m going to teach you a real lesson, bitch.”

Fear lodged in her throat, and she knew this was it. There was no getting away from him.

Before he could grab hold of her, someone slammed into his side, sending him crashing onto the ground.

Ralen.

Oh, thank God. A sob of relief escaped her.

Ralen quickly turned the guy over and then punched him in the face several times before standing back and shaking out his hand.

The guy who’d attacked her was still.

Ralen was breathing heavily as he turned to her. “Are you all right, Addie?”

She nodded her head frantically and pointed back around the truck. He needed to stop paying attention to her and go help Cash.

Ralen nodded and took off around the truck.

Shaking, knowing that she probably wouldn’t be able to walk, Addie crawled her way around to see that both Ralen and Cash had their backs to each other as they fought off the three men. Those were still unfair odds, though, and she needed to help even them up.

Addie dragged herself up onto her feet and reached under the tarp again.

There it was. The elusive crowbar.

Grabbing hold of it in both hands, she managed to make her way to the guy on shaky legs. Cash was now fighting off two men, while Ralen had taken on the biggest of the three. She moved up behind one guy and smacked the crowbar down on the back of his head with a thud.

Oh, God. Oh, God.

She hadn’t thought about what she might do if the guy didn’t actually fall over.

Slowly, he turned and stared at her.

Oh, jeez. Oh, jeez. Oh, jeez.

What the hell was she going to do now? She took a step back, and then another one, before Cash grabbed the crowbar out of her hand and smacked it across the asshole’s face.
