He’s cruel, hard, and everything I should stay away from. For one, he is my boss. Second, well, I can’t stay away.

Fuck, why did I even answer?

I never answer.

It must have been a momentary lapse in judgment.

That’s the only reason I can think of for my stupidity.

“Rebecca,” I guess. She has been messaging me non-stop all day, asking me to come over tonight. That is not going to happen.

“Yes. Why? Do you have someone else?” she squeals.

“I do. Multiple, if I’m being honest. Which I informed you of when I first asked you to drop your dress,” I say to her as I drive up to my house.

“Arghhh.” Her screech is loud through my car’s hands-free phone unit.

“Look, I have to go.” With a quick flick, I hang up on her. She automatically tries to call back, but I ignore it. Leaning over the seat, I grab hold of my bottle of whiskey to head inside my apartment building. The doorman opens the door for me as I walk in and takes the keys for my car, which he will park.

I was born into a life of luxury and still live in that lifestyle. I’m in my early twenties and already a multi-millionaire, and well on my way to being a billionaire.

“Sir …”

Spinning on my heel, I turn to my doorman, Jim, who looks behind me and nods.

As I turn, two arms wrap around my middle. “I’m ready to drop my coat,” Rebecca whispers in my ear, her voice sounding like cracked glass ready to puncture my entire being. I clutch the bottle of whiskey in my hand, a little too tightly, and then attempt to pull her hands off of me. When I step back, she’s wearing a long coat and sky-high heels.

“Rebecca …” I start.

She shakes her head and starts to undo the top button of her coat. It’s then I see the pink skin and realize she’s wearing nothing underneath.

Fuck.

Rebecca flicks her long hair back over her shoulder and holds her fingers at the top of the coat to keep it together. “Let’s take this upstairs. You know you want to.”

I do.

But I don’t.

Confliction takes over, my body reacting to something I don’t want.

Rebecca’s already attached. She wants me and obviously feels some sort of connection I have no wish to experience, so me taking her upstairs to bend her over would do nothing to help this situation I now find myself in.

I look back to Jim, who’s watching us with his eyes widening and his mouth falling open.

“Jim, please escort Rebecca out. She is not welcome here any longer.” I look back to Rebecca and smile. “I have work to do, and you need to leave. Please don’t come back again.” I try to step around her, but she opens her coat and showcases herself to me.

I’m a man, so naturally, I look.

But when I think about it, there is nowhere else to avert my eyes right now as she is all up in my face.

When I look up at her eyes, there’s desperation there. Her eyes dart around a little, and she jerkily steps from side to side, then the pained stare has me searching for answers I have no questions for.

“Please go. Do you need me to call you a cab?” I ask.

Rebecca closes her coat quickly, her lips form a straight line, and she thrusts her chest out. “Fuck you, Beckham Harley.”

I’m pretty sure that’s what she wants me to do. Fuck her that is.

Her heels click-clack as she storms out of the building.

Jim holds the door open for her, and I watch as she leaves.

“Don’t allow any women in here. Only my sisters,” I tell him before heading toward the elevator that will take me to my apartment and away from the craziness that has just enveloped my life at this moment.

“Yes, sir,” he says as I step in.

My phone pings, and when I look down, it’s a photograph of my niece, Winter.

Pressing call on her contact, Winter’s little voice echoes through my sister’s phone. “Uncle, I want to come to yours.”

The elevator finally opens on my floor. Stepping off, I quickly pace over to the counter and place my whiskey on top, then look at it longingly.

It’s the only thing that helps me sleep.

I can sleep without it, but on the weekends, I need it or should I say want it. Not every weekend, just when I dream of her. Paige invades my thoughts when I’m exhausted, and I am helpless to stop the flood of emotions those thoughts inflict on me.

I loved her.

And then she died.

Winter reminds me of her. Her soul is pure and sweet. Much like Paige’s was.

“Next week! We will go on a date.” I hear Winter sigh, then she replies, “Okay,” before Rylee’s voice comes through the phone line.
But how do you make your heart stop bleeding?

I haven’t figured that out yet.

It’s been five days since I last saw him.

Heard from him.

Touched him.

He was at the police station.

They cleared him.

He left.

He. Just. Left.

Noah won’t tell me where he is. Rhianna has even tried to get the location from him.

Noah knows, and he’s keeping it a secret, or he doesn’t—I can’t be sure which one.

Either way, I’m mad. So damn mad.

Rhianna stays next to me. She has been by my side for the last five days. I should feel sorry for Noah that I am hogging her time. But I need her. I really need her right now.

The door to the room flies open, and Beckham stands in front of us, his eyes red and his face stone cold. Without thinking, I reach for him, but he steps back, shaking his head. Beckham never steps back from me, maybe from Rhianna but never from me.

“Beckham.”

His head lifts and his eyes fall on me, then they turn into angry slits.

“Beckham.” Rhianna rises from the bed and steps over to me. We both stand in front of him. “What happened?” she asks.

We hear the door to the apartment open. Noah comes straight to where we are in my doorway. His eyes fall to Beckham before they shift to Rhianna and me.

“What’s going on?” Rhianna asks.

“She’s dead,” Beckham says. I’ve never heard him so angry before. So … volatile.

“Who?” I ask as Rhianna sucks in a breath next to me.

Noah walks in, pushing past Beckham while I stare at him.

“Beckham, I…” I have no words. The tears that leave my eyes now are not for August but for the young boy standing in front of me. “Beckham,” I say again, reaching for him. He shakes his head and steps back once more, so I can’t touch him.

“They couldn’t save her. After five days, they couldn’t save her,” he screams. “She slipped away with her fragile hand stuck in mine.” He says the last part in a whisper.

Since that day, Paige had been in the hospital, and she lost so much blood they had to give her more. Which caused an infection.

I had hopes she would be fine—she was young and healthy.

I guessed wrong.

So wrong.

“Beckham,” I repeat his name and reach for him. Not letting him get away from me this time, I throw my arms around his neck and hug him tight. He loved her. He and Paige had something beautiful. Being friends first, their love turned into something special. Even my mother liked Paige, knowing who she was and where she came from.

She was good for Beckham.

“Rylee, let me go,” Beckham says. I drop my arms from around his neck, and he takes a step back. “August was there as well,” he says, and his words are like a punch in the gut. “He may have been cleared, but I’m pretty sure he’s going to find Josh and pull him from the grave simply to beat his ass.” Beckham smirks.

I’m not sure if he’s being truthful or exaggerating. I haven’t seen August to know. He refuses to see me, even when they held him at the station while they investigated. Thankfully, Glenn got there early enough to see most of it, and it was an open and shut case. They were thankful to have Josh off the streets, but also, August was there, and he shouldn’t have been.

I turn to see Rhianna’s head on Noah’s chest as he strokes her hair to calm her down.

“Where is he?” I ask. Noah’s hand pauses for a second, it’s so quick I almost miss it, and then he shakes his head. “Just tell me where he is. His sister died,” I yell at him.

“Last I heard he was heading to Josh’s house.” I look back at Beckham and see him watching Noah with sad eyes. Noah shakes his head at Beckham but doesn’t say anything.

“Do you want to come?” I ask Beckham.

Beckham’s hands slide into his pockets, and he nods his head once.

“No, Rylee. Stay here.” Rhianna pulls herself from Noah’s arms and reaches for me. I don’t let her.

“I have to go,” I reply.

“No, you do not,” she says, her voice higher than usual. “You don’t know what you’re about to walk in on. Stop and think.”

“No. I’ve stopped and thought. I need to go.” I walk out of my room and snatch my keys from the kitchen counter. Beckham is right behind me as I keep walking until we reach the car.

“Rylee.” We both turn to see Glenn, Paige’s father, standing there. Glenn has sunglasses covering his eyes, so I can’t see the pain that I know will be radiating off of him, but I can feel it. “Beckham, where are you going?”
It tastes—I lick it again—sweet. I like the taste. Is that weird? I had heard it’s meant to have a metallic taste. But mine, well, it’s sweet. Maybe it’s the only thing about me that is sweet.

My fingers touch the edges of my lips. The bleeding is slowing, but the throbbing intensifies.

“Fuck, Rylee, really?”

My hand drops away from my busted lip as I glance up at him.

He’s shaking his head, his blond hair barely moving with all the product he uses. “See what you made me do? Fuck!” He swipes his face with his hand and stares at me with emotionless eyes.

How could I have been so blind to those eyes for so long?

“You should leave…” I somehow manage to whisper then lick my lips—I can still taste the sweetness of my blood.

He tries to touch me again, but I step back dramatically.

“Leave, Anderson,” I say with more force.

He shakes his head and scrubs his face again.

Really? How many times does he plan to do that? Doesn’t he know by touching his face he’s spreading germs?

“Rylee, come on…”

Sidestepping him, I open my bedroom door. “You better leave before I scream.” I blink a few times and then glare. “If you don’t, I’ll kick you where I know the sun doesn’t shine.”

Anger rolls between his brows while his hands tighten into fists. “You need to watch your mouth,” he grates out through gritted teeth, his voice hard and unrelenting.

“Ha,” I bark out, shaking my head. “Last strike.” I point to my face and then the door. “Now, leave and don’t come back.”

Anderson takes a step in my direction then leans down so his face is close to mine. “They would never believe you over me. And even if they did, they won’t care. All they want is for you to marry me.” He smirks and steps toward the door. He lifts his hand, and I hold my flinch in as he grips the door handle. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Rylee.”

I watch him step out the door and down my parents’ stairs, saying goodbye to them as he leaves.

I hate him.

What I ever saw in him, I’ll never know.

It’s hard, but I need to get out of this house. My parents expect and want so much from me. Sometimes, I wish I had followed my sister, Rhianna, when she escaped the family business. To be honest, I don’t know why I didn’t leave with her. Perhaps it wasn’t the right time, but now regret chips away at my heart every single day. Every single minute. How do you combat what you want with what is right for you?

With a hard push, I close the door and then slide down its surface. My hands cover my face as I draw my knees up under my chin.

I’ve been dating Anderson since high school. He was the popular football player, and I was the good little rich girl.

Our parents couldn’t be more pleased with our relationship. Fuck, they’re already planning our wedding and I’m only twenty-three.

I don’t want to get married this young, and especially not to him.

Anderson has his good days, but he has far too many bad ones. And let’s be quite serious here, I don’t want any days with him.

I hear footsteps approach my door, and I know who it is straight away.

“Ry, tell me you’re okay?” my little brother whispers, his concern floating to me through the closed door.

“I’m fine, Beckham. I’ll see you in the morning,” I tell him with the strongest voice I can muster.

He waits.

He always does.

He’s the only one who understands what Anderson is like, and he hates him for it. But, more importantly, he detests that I won’t leave him, and he can’t grasp the concept of why I stay. It makes him crazy angry, but I can’t seem to muster the energy to do what I know is right.

It’s the pressure.

The pressure from my family is simply too much.

My father takes care of the accounts of some of the wealthiest people in Australia, and that extends to the rest of the world. I’m his only child who’s willing to, or even interested in, taking over the family business. I work with Father now, understanding the basics, as I have finally finished my degree in accounting. And soon, I will run it all. Which makes me happy. I like what I do—numbers and money makes me happy. I like to organize and find the number’s rightful place then fix any problems that arise in handling the accounts.

Plus, I’m good at it.

Really good.

My sister is what you’d call a free spirit. She’s never done well listening to rules and prefers to travel and live her life the way she wants—carefree and easy-going. My brother is a football star. Even at his young age of sixteen, we all know he’s going places.
