When the woman he loves is taken, Forest “Trees” Scott abandons a mission to save her from the enemy. Fearing the worst, he moves heaven and earth to find her—until he realizes Laila Torres left him of her own free will for the man who used her for six years. He’s stunned and wrecked. She played him—and he fell for it. One thing he’s not doing? Giving up. He’ll find her and he’ll make her pay…in his bed.
Laila is devastated by her tormentor’s return, but when he threatens the bodyguard she’s so foolishly fallen for, she risks everything—including her life—to protect Trees. As a mere pawn in a deadly game played by factions of a cartel, she and Trees have no future unless she can somehow destroy them. But she doesn’t count on Trees hunting her down, stripping her soul bare, and insisting in the sexiest way possible that she belongs to him and always will.
But danger awaits around every corner, and secrets abound. As Trees and Laila fight for their future, their enemies close in. Will they let go of their hurts and trust in their love before it’s too late?
*This is part two of Trees and Laila’s duet. If you have not read part one, Wicked as Seduction, please start there.*

Lafayette, Louisiana

For Laila Torres, the day started out troubling. It ended in hell.

As dawn rose, her bodyguard and lover, Forest “Trees” Scott, prepared to join the rest of EM Security on a mission with one objective: to rescue his bosses’ sister, who was being held captive by dangerous kingpin Geraldo Montilla. As he headed for the door, Trees lifted her against his tall, hard-muscled body and held her close. Reflexively, she wrapped her arms around his neck, her heart beating fast.

Last night, they had fought. Trees’s bosses had proposed she act as bait to lure the narcotics king out of hiding and into a trap. She’d said yes. After all, her sister and her nephew—the only family she had—would never be safe until Montilla was gone. When Trees had refused to let her go, she’d tried to escape. He’d quickly caught her and dragged her back to his house. Then they had skipped sleep and spent the rest of the night electronically hunting their enemy. With the information he’d gleaned, Trees had devised a plan for him and his fellow operatives to nab the kingpin, one that didn’t require her to be involved in Montilla’s takedown at all.

Now, as he left to put himself in danger so she would be safe, she felt the desperation in his touch. It matched her own as she clung to him. “What are you doing?”

“Telling you I love you, Laila.”

She froze. That shouldn’t be possible. Yet…how many things had he done to help her, soothe her, and save her? Trees had always been fair and patient, kind yet gruff, but intensely protective. Would he have tried so hard if she didn’t mean something to him?

Laila wasn’t sure and didn’t know what to say…but her first reaction was resounding joy. Her heart filled with it and threatened to overflow.

But could she give the words back to him? Had she searched her soul enough to be certain of her feelings?

“I know it’s one-sided. I don’t expect you to say anything. I just—” He shook his head, let out a curse, then seized her lips in a hard press as if he was determined to imprint himself on her. And he stole her breath.

Just as suddenly, he wrenched away, set her on her feet, and slammed out the door, leaving her gaping and already regretting the things she’d left unsaid.

With a final glance back at her through the living room window, he punched a few buttons on his phone. She heard the house alarms engage—his way of keeping her safe during the twelve hours he would be gone.

After he drove off, Laila roamed his place listlessly. She picked at breakfast. She turned on a telenovela…then turned the silly thing off. She paced, praying Trees would finish this mission unscathed. She showered, hoping the soothing water would help her decide what to say when he returned.

What was love? Did she really know? She felt something for him—a lot, actually. But love?

If that isn’t what you feel, why do you have such angst?

It was a fair question. Was she capable of the kind of love Trees had given her? Or had she endured too much to love him the way he deserved? After all, if she allowed another person to be tattooed onto her heart, that gave her tormentor, Victor Ramos, another weapon to use against her, the way he had her family.

After wriggling into her pink tank and short shorts—and wishing for the hundredth time that she’d packed something warmer when she’d fled Florida—she towel-dried her curls, her thoughts turning.

Until an electronic peal shattered the silence.

The perimeter alarm.

She froze. Her heart started chugging. Was someone on the property? In the house?

Days ago, she’d told Trees safety was an illusion. Unfortunately, she’d been right.

Laila tossed her damp towel into the sink, then rushed down the hall to Trees’s home office to scan his bank of security cameras. Her heart stuttered when she saw a sleek black truck with unreadable plates lunging up the road. That wasn’t Trees. It wasn’t his friend Zy. It wasn’t one of their three bosses, either. She didn’t know for sure who was barreling onto Trees’s property uninvited, but he wasn’t coming to borrow a cup of sugar or say hello.

Had she been discovered again? By the Tierra Caliente cartel or by Victor Ramos himself?

Either possibility sent panic burning through her. From her bedroom, she heard the ringing of her phone. Trees. He would already know that someone had broken past his security. Did she dare run back to grab the device?

She peeked out the living room window, to the front of the house. The black truck was rolling to a stop in front. She didn’t have time to retrieve her phone.

She had to hide—now.

The ringing stopped, only to start again. Trees was panicked. She could practically feel him worrying as he pressed buttons, looked at his cameras, remotely tried to assess the situation and figure out how to save her when he was probably hundreds of miles away. She hated to worry him, but she had to shove regret aside for survival.
Tech wiz and former elite soldier Forest “Trees” Scott had one mission: Rescue the woman being hunted by a vicious cartel and get her to safety. It should have been simple…but the minute he sees the wary beauty with haunted eyes, his desire for her complicates everything. So does her stubborn refusal to trust him. When Trees is forced to abduct her, she vows to hate him—even as he finds himself falling in love…

For six years, Laila Torres has known nothing but brutality at the hands of men, so when the massive stranger with the forbidding mien kidnaps her, she’s frightened—and furious. But the giant’s protective care shocks her. With every word, he proves steadfast. With every forbidden touch, he awakens the woman in her. Soon, she’s facing the terrifying realization that he’s also dangerously close to capturing her heart.
But their ruthless enemies are closing in, threatening everything Laila holds dear. When she’s forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice, will she trust Trees and their love to save her?

Orlando

“Stop worrying and enjoy yourself. Everything here is fine,” Laila Torres said over the phone to her sister as she leaned over her sleeping nephew’s crib to pat his rising-and-falling back. “Jorge fussed when I first set him down, but after a quick bedtime story and a kiss from his tía, he drifted off. How is the concert?”

“It is good. The next band will start in a few minutes, but maybe I should come home now?”

“No, you should not.”

“Are you sure? I feel guilty, leaving you to babysit…”

“Why? I love to. Jorge is a joy. And mamás deserve a little time away for fun.” Valeria had been single parenting since the boy’s birth, and they had relocated to Florida three months ago with no sign of their dangerous past catching up to them. Surely, it was time to live. “Do not worry about me. Now that he is asleep, I will find something on TV and relax.”

Valeria sighed. “Is the house locked? Every door? Every window? Is the alarm set?”

Laila shared her sister’s anxiety. Despite the fact Valeria no longer had to worry about her late husband, Emilo, finding their location and trying to kill her for the sin of leaving him, the brutal thugs who had helped him run the vicious Tierra Caliente cartel were very much alive—and willing to carry out their boss’s final wish. They were hardly the only concern. Rumor was that, following Emilo’s surgical slaughter two weeks ago, his father, Geraldo, had decided Jorge must be brought back and raised to inherit the family narcotics empire.

If that was true and Geraldo succeeded, her beloved nephew would be taught to be all the things they’d run from—a drug lord. A killer. A rapist. She and Valeria would be unable to stop them from warping the little boy because they would be dead.

Laila preferred that fate for herself over the six dark years she’d spent in Emilo’s lavish prison, but Jorge deserved a future that wasn’t steeped in brutality and crime. “I have checked everything twice. All is well.”

A squeak from the other side of the house rent the quiet. Laila froze. Since she, her sister, and Jorge had been forced to relocate here, she had catalogued every creak and groan the house made.

She had never heard this sound before.

The scrape of something—metal on glass?—followed.

Her heart banged with trepidation.

“Thank you,” Valeria said. “You know I worry—”

“Shh. I hear something,” she whispered. “I will call you back.”

Laila didn’t wait for her sister’s reply before severing their connection and yanking the nightlight from the wall in Jorge’s room, just in case. Darkness encroached, the monster she’d been living with for years. It ratcheted up her fear, clawing at her throat. Her heart thudded. Her palms turned sweaty. But for her nephew—for survival—she forced herself to tiptoe through the shadows and poke her head into the hallway.

When she listened again for the sound, she heard something far worse.

“You are certain they’re here?” whispered one man from the living room, his accent like someone from her homeland.

They had been discovered again?

Laila sucked in a gasp. Fear seared her veins. Why was this happening? How had they found her family again? She had to get her nephew out of here.

“Of course they are,” snapped a second man.

Victor Ramos. She would know his cruel voice anywhere. She’d heard it each of the countless times he’d growled taunts in her ear while pinning her under him and violating her.

Laila’s fear turned to terror.

Why wouldn’t Victor let her go?

Later. First, she had to get Jorge to safety. She wished she had kept the gun she wasn’t supposed to have closer, rather than in her bedroom on the far side of the house, away from her curious, very mobile nephew. She would have to do without it and devise a plan in seconds or—

She couldn’t think about the “or.”

“What if the boy cries?” the first man asked.

“Shut him up until you secure him in the van. But do not harm him.”

“And the women?”

“Expendable,” Victor said. “Though I would like a last moment or two with Laila.”

“You want to fuck her again,” the first man said with a chuckle.

“Can you blame me? Her pussy is as sweet now as it was at fourteen.”

Rage and shame burned, boiling into a familiar hate. Somehow, someway, Laila would make that man pay for everything he’d done.

She would forever be indebted to EM Security’s sniper, Pierce Walker, for ending Emilo. In fact, she was grateful the team had rescued her from her brother-in-law’s compound in Mexico last September. She’d hoped that was the beginning of a new life, especially after she had cooperated with the feds. Since then, the US government had seemingly done nothing to stop her late brother-in-law’s narcotics operation. If they had, Victor Ramos wouldn’t be creeping through her house now.
For agonizing months, Chase “Zyron” Garrett has been forbidden from touching Tessa, the pretty office assistant who makes him burn. But when danger strikes EM Security Management and top-secret information is leaked, it’s obvious the team has a mole…and the evidence points to the woman he’s fallen for. The bosses demand he investigate her, so he resolves to stop at nothing, even stripping her bare—body and soul—for the truth.

Tessa Lawrence has known heartbreak in the past, but Zy has always been her staunchest protector. Since he was contractually off-limits, the Southern, sassy single mom clung to her friendship with the daring demolitions expert who’d stolen her heart and focused on making the best life for her daughter. But when the barriers between her and Zy are suddenly gone, she welcomes him into her bed, not realizing she’s giving him the power to destroy her. Or that the enemy is watching.

Then the unthinkable happens, and Tessa is forced to make the most gut-wrenching choice of her life. Will their love survive the betrayal or will their future end before it’s even begun?
He wished the BS Hunter, Logan, and Joaquin had just spewed was a punch line, but EM Security Management had a mole, and they very clearly weren’t joking.

It’s either your bestie or your girl.

You’ve got two weeks to figure out which one of them is guilty or we’re letting both go.

Bastards. Neither Trees nor Tessa was guilty of a fucking thing. Zy ought to know; he’d already spent three months nosing into his best friend’s life. He’d come up with zero dirt, proving Trees as innocent as Zy always suspected.

Now they wanted him to seduce Tessa Lawrence, their office assistant, to discern if she was guilty of selling them out. If he didn’t, they would fire her, despite the fact she was a single mom who needed her job.

You’ve got two weeks—max. If you fail, we’ll do the same to your fucking ass, too. Now get busy and get it done.

Calling them bastards was too polite. They were assholes.

Zy clenched his jaw and stood. How was he supposed to do what they’d demanded? He loved Tessa. He’d told her as much on Christmas Eve. Her response had been to run away, sure, but he was ninety-nine percent positive she’d left because she loved him, too…but thought their situation was hopeless. After all, they’d never dated or hooked up. Hell, they’d never even kissed because, for the last ten months, a single sticky paragraph in their employment contracts had kept them apart.

As of five minutes ago, it was gone.

I’m going to take her aside this morning and present her with a new contract. Better sick pay and vacation, tighter nondisclosure…and no nonfraternization clause. She’ll sign. Then you’ll both be off the hook.

Son of a bitch. Zy had waited and wanted Tessa, ached and burned for her. He’d been hoping that somehow, someday they could be more than co-workers and friends, but he’d never imagined that he’d be strong-armed into getting her between the sheets to spy on her. He didn’t have to fuck Tessa to know that selling the bosses out was something she’d never do. But he didn’t have a choice. Since they’d already coerced him into snooping on Trees, Zy figured he’d repeat the process…just with hot, bust-up-the-bed sex.

But one way or another, he would prove to the Three Stooges that they could one-hundred-percent trust Tessa.

“Get a move on,” Logan, the youngest of his bosses, insisted.

Fuck off, douche bucket.

But Zy kept his mouth shut and gave them all a tight smile as he headed for the door.

As he approached, it crashed open. Caleb Edgington, the team’s previous commander, charged in looking shell-shocked, like he’d collided with panic and run face-first into death.

“Colonel, sir?”

Hunter and Logan both stood. The quietest of his bosses, Joaquin, rose with a frown.

“Dad?” Hunter approached him.

The older man swallowed. “Your sister…”

Sudden tension gripped the room.

“What’s wrong with Kimber?” Logan scowled.

“I received a threat recently. It wasn’t specific, just a tube of lipstick and a warning to hand over Valeria Montilla before they took whoever the tube belonged to. I didn’t know who—” Emotion choked off the colonel’s words. He pressed his fist to his lips, grasping for the fortitude to finish delivering the bad news.

Zy’s gut twisted. The man’s only daughter, Hunter and Logan’s sister…

Another guy came in behind the colonel—big, blond, badass, and totally pissed off. Deke Trenton, Kimber’s husband. “She’s gone. She dropped the kids off at daycare, then made a trip to the grocery store…and didn’t come home. A courier delivered this thirty minutes ago.”

They all crowded around as he whipped out a picture of Kimber, her auburn hair tangled, her big eyes red rimmed, with a gag over her mouth, her hands tied behind her back, and a gun to her head.

Holy shit.

“We’ll get her back.” Despite his face going pale, Hunter sounded resolute. “We’ll do whatever it takes—”

“You’re fucking right we will,” Deke spat. “I want my kitten back. Jack and the rest of the Oracle team are at our office strategizing. Any help you can spare…”

“You’ll have it,” Hunter promised. “We need to lock down the rest of the wives and kids.”

“Fast,” the colonel managed. “Before it’s too late.”

The older man ducked out, looking as if he could barely keep himself together.

Deke didn’t look much calmer. “Thanks for whatever you can do.”

“Fuck that, she’s our sister. We’ll devote day and night to saving her.”

Kimber’s husband nodded, then he was gone, too. Silence prevailed for a protracted moment before Hunter swallowed, collecting himself. He turned to ice in an instant. Logan lived up to his fiery temper, grabbing an eraser from the nearest whiteboard then throwing it violently. His empty coffee mug followed, shattering against the wall.
Zy is assigned to protect her, but the moment he meets the gorgeous blonde, those contractual restrictions tighten around him like a noose.
Tessa Lawrence is alone in the world…except for her newborn baby, and she’s determined to survive without anyone’s help. Then Zy walks through her door. His hands fucking shook. On the long walk up the shadowy path to the familiar front door, he let out a slow breath. Calm wasn’t happening.

He’d waited forever for the right to touch Tessa Lawrence. He’d been her friend, her co-worker, and her protector. But most of all, he wanted to be her lover.

Today, everything had changed. So tonight, that might finally happen.

Night enveloped him, chilly, still, and clear. Stars winked in a vast midnight sky. The world seemed to have stopped, as if it held its breath in anticipation. Or maybe that was just him, working to keep his lungs functioning and his head screwed on straight. Thoughts of Tessa made him hungry and desperate. Always had. He’d never craved a woman the way he did her.

Would she finally say yes?

At the front door, he knocked and told himself he wasn’t making a mistake. He wanted to do this. Yeah, but he had to do this. His bosses hadn’t left him any choice.

It took a minute, but the porch light came on. He sensed Tessa on the other side, saw a shadow pass in front of the peephole. Finally, she eased the door open. Her face was bare, her blond hair in a messy bun on top of her head. Her bottom lip was rosy and puffy, as if she’d been chewing on it nervously. She wasn’t wearing anything fancy, just a plain set of long-sleeved cotton pajamas in a muted green with a simple satin trim, but they hugged every curve of that body he’d craved for ten seemingly endless months. They also told him she wore nothing underneath.

All his blood rushed south. He started to sweat.

“Zy.” She sounded surprised, but she looked as if she’d half been expecting him. “What are you doing here? It’s getting late. Is everything okay?”

“Did you really think that, after today, I wouldn’t come?”

“No.”

“Is Hallie asleep?” he asked of her infant daughter.

“She fought some, but I got her down about thirty minutes ago.”

He enjoyed spending time with the little girl, but she was a distraction they didn’t need tonight. “Good. Can I come in?”

She hesitated. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“Did you get a new contract today?”

Another hesitation before she nodded. “Joaquin emailed it to me.”

“Did you sign?”

“Zy…” She bit her lip again, this time as if she tried to stop herself from answering.

He wasn’t letting this go. He’d waited for her. He’d wanted her. And he intended to take her. “Did you?”

She sighed. “Yes.”

“So did I, first thing this morning. The restrictions keeping us apart are gone.”

“They are, but—”

“There are no more buts, Tessa.”

Finally, she nodded. “How did you know?”

“The bosses told me.”

“Why?”

She wasn’t asking why they’d rewritten the employment contracts and rescinded the clause that had prevented them from having any non-work contact of a sexual nature. No doubt the trio of bastards they worked for had fed her some story. They were good at that. Probably why they were successful. No, Tessa wanted to know why they’d told him about her contract.

Because they want me to get close to you, to fuck you, and find out if you’ve been selling us out. Right now, I hate my goddamn job…but I want you more. “Because when they changed mine, I asked about yours. You know why.”

“I do.”

Good. “Can you think of a single reason I can’t come in, strip you down, and make love to you? Tell me right now.”

Even by the dim lights of the porch, he saw color flush her cheeks. “Did you mean what you said on Christmas Eve?”

“Every word.”

Tessa dragged in a shaky breath as she stared at him with big green eyes. Finally, she stepped back, her baby-pink toe nails a soft splash of color against the white tile of her foyer. “Then there’s no reason at all. Come in.”

March 3 (The previous year)

“Welcome to the jungle.” A smile played at Caleb Edgington’s mouth as the one-man welcoming committee waited, hand outstretched, just inside the office.

He shut the door behind him and shook it. “Thank you, sir. I’m happy to be here.”

“Come on in. Before I introduce you around, do you prefer Chase or…”

“I’ll answer to almost anything, but most people call me Zyron. Mr. Garrett is my dad, and Chase is a stupid-ass name. Not sure what my mother was thinking with that.”

The former colonel—and his new boss—laughed. “Zyron it is. Mind telling me where that nickname came from?”

He kind of did because he’d probably get ribbed for it, but since one of the people who had stuck him with that moniker worked here, Zy knew he wasn’t getting out of it. “Some of the assholes I served with in Afghanistan decided I looked like Zac Efron. I’m not sure it was a compliment.”

Louisiana

Standing naked and numb, in the middle of the empty dining room, Brea Bell blinked. What had just happened?

She felt flattened. Her world had been shaken, turned inside out, upended every which way.

Pierce Walker did that to her.

While her body had still been glowing from the pleasure he’d heaped on her, everything had begun falling apart.

Now he was gone.

The second he had answered the unexpected ring of his phone, her lover had been replaced by pure warrior. Within minutes, he’d dressed, grabbed his bag, and disappeared on a dangerous mission to tangle with the drug lord who had nearly killed him mere weeks ago.

He’d left her terrified for his safety—and burning with so many questions.

She’d known he made his living as a sniper who killed bad guys and terrorists while keeping his fellow operatives safe. At least that’s what she’d told herself.

I’m glad my father is gone. I hated him. It’s why I killed him.

Until Pierce had uttered those words, she would never have thought him capable of murdering his father in cold blood. How could anyone kill their own flesh and blood? Brea couldn’t fathom it, but Pierce had.

And he’d expressed no remorse.

Say you’ll move in with me.

His soft, shocking demand just before he’d slipped out the door still rang in her ears. How did Pierce think she could do that without imploding her entire life? And how could she commit to any sort of future with him when she didn’t know whether to believe he was the steadfast protector she’d come to know…or concede she’d fallen for a bad-boy fantasy who was good at manipulating her body?

Brea couldn’t stay here. She needed to go home. She had to think.

Trembling, she dressed, then defaulted to familiar domestic tasks that calmed her mind. Soon, she’d silenced the music, boxed and stored their food in the refrigerator, and cleared the table. She also made Pierce’s bed, trying not to remember just how good it had felt to be underneath him on these very sheets.

Some headstrong part of her wanted to linger, as if the secret to understanding him hid under his roof and she could absorb his truths if she simply remained. But that was her hopeful heart talking.

She had to start using her head.

As she retrieved her purse from the floor, she tucked the half-spilled contents back inside, then glanced at her phone. It was nearly midnight, and her father had texted to ask when she was coming home two hours ago.

On my way.

As soon as her reply was delivered, she darkened the device. Tears threatened to fall, but she stifled them. Once she was in her room, where no one would disturb her, she could start unpacking everything alone.

Brea flipped off lights all over Pierce’s house and contemplated leaving his key on the table. But that would be a cowardly way to end their…whatever this was. She owed it to them both to hear his story. Then she’d decide if giving in to her heart and building a future with him was in her best interest.

How ironic. She’d knocked on Pierce’s door a few hours ago, hoping they had a chance at a new beginning together. After tonight, she wasn’t sure there’d be any coming back.

The silence as she headed through the inky night to Sunset felt heavy. The old her would have called Cutter and asked for his advice. But she already knew what he’d say. She didn’t want any opinions now except her own.

When she pulled into her driveway, the house looked dark, except for the light Daddy kept on above the stove whenever she was late. Bless him…

Her fingers fumbled as she unlocked the door. She dead-bolted it behind her, then dashed to her room. In the dark, she dropped her purse on the desk to her left and shut herself inside before she fell across her bed and let her thoughts run free.

Who was this man, deep down, she’d given herself to? What had she done?

She’d fallen in love. She’d let herself believe she and Pierce could forge something lasting, despite their chasm of differences.

And she might have made a colossal mistake.

Brea grasped now why people called it heartache. Hers wrenched with uncertainty and pain. Sobs followed.

Behind her, the lamp on her nightstand suddenly flicked on.

She sat up with a gasp. Her father stood not two feet away, watching her with a disappointed stare.

“Brea.” He never yelled. He never had to. His ability to emote, which made him so good behind the pulpit, also made him an amazingly effective parent.

She wiped the tears from her cheeks. “Daddy, what are you doing up? Do you need something?”

With a heavy sigh, he sat beside her and took her hand. “Just to talk to you. You’ve been the best daughter a man could have asked for, and I know you’re a grown woman…”

Sunset, Louisiana

Finally, he had her cornered. He intended to tear down every last damn obstacle between him and Brea Bell.

Right now.

For months, she’d succumbed to fears, buried her head in the sand, even lied. He’d tried to be understanding and patient. He’d made mistakes, but damn it, he’d put her first, given her space, been the good guy.

Fuck that. Now that he’d fought his way here, she would see the real him.

One-Mile Walker slammed the door of his Jeep and turned all his focus on the modest white cottage with its vintage blue door. As he marched up the long concrete driveway, his heart pounded. He had a nasty idea how Brea’s father would respond when he explained why he’d come. The man would slam the door in his face; no maybe about that. After all, he was the bad boy from a broken home who had defiled Reverend Bell’s pretty, perfect daughter with unholy glee.

But One-Mile refused to let Brea go again. He’d make her father listen…somehow. Since punching the guy in the face was out of the question, he’d have to quell his brute-force instinct to fight dirty and instead employ polish, tact, and charm—all the qualities he possessed zero of.

Fuck. This was going to be a shit show.

Still, One-Mile refused to give up. He’d known uphill battles his whole life. What was one more?

Through the front window, he spotted the soft doe eyes that had haunted him since last summer. Though Brea was talking to an elderly couple, the moment she saw him approach her porch, her amber eyes went wide with shock.

Determination gripped One-Mile and squeezed his chest. By damned, she was going to listen, too.

He wasn’t leaving without making her his.

As he mounted the first step toward her door, his cell phone rang. He would have ignored it if it hadn’t been for two critical facts: His job often entailed saving the world as people knew it, and this particular chime he only heard when one of the men he respected most in this fucked-up world needed him during the grimmest of emergencies.

Of all the lousy timing…

He yanked the device from his pocket. “Walker here. Colonel?”

“Yeah.”

Colonel Caleb Edgington was a retired, highly decorated military officer and a tough son of a bitch. One thing he wasn’t prone to was drama, so that single foreboding syllable told One-Mile that whatever had prompted this call was dire.

He didn’t bother with small talk, even though it had been months since they’d spoken, and he wondered how the man was enjoying both his fifties and his new wife, but they’d catch up later. Now, they had no time to waste.

“What can I do for you?” Since he owed Caleb a million times over, whatever the man needed One-Mile would make happen.

Caleb’s sons might be his bosses these days…but as far as One-Mile was concerned, the jury was still out on that trio. Speaking of which, why wasn’t Caleb calling those badasses?

One-Mile could only think of one answer. It was hardly comforting.

“Or should I just ask who I need to kill?”

A feminine gasp sent his gaze jerking to Brea, who now stood in the doorway, her rosy bow of a mouth gaping open in a perfect little O. She’d heard that. Goddamn it to hell. Yeah, she knew perfectly well what he was. But he’d managed to shock her repeatedly over the last six months.

“I’m not sure yet.” Caleb sounded cautious in his ear. “I’m going to text you an address. Can you meet me there in fifteen minutes?”

For months, he’d been anticipating this exact moment with Brea. “Any chance it can wait an hour?”

“No. Every moment is critical.”

Since Caleb would never say such things lightly, One-Mile didn’t see that he had an option. “On my way.”

He ended the call and pocketed the phone as he climbed onto the porch and gave Brea his full attention. He had so little time with her, but he’d damn sure get his point across before he went.

She stepped outside and shut the door behind her, swallowing nervously as she cast a furtive glance over her shoulder, through the big picture window. Was she hoping her father didn’t see them?

“Pierce.” Her whisper sounded closer to a hiss. “What are you doing here?”

He hated when anyone else used his given name, but Brea could call him whatever the hell she wanted as long as she let him in her life.

He peered down at her, considering how to answer. He’d had grand plans to lay his cards out on the table and do whatever he had to—talk, coax, hustle, schmooze—until she and her father both came around to his way of thinking. Now he only had time to cut to the chase. “You know what I want, pretty girl. I’m here for you. And when I come back, I won’t take no for an answer.”
