Gorgeous ranchers meet ex-crims, what could possibly go wrong?
I don't know whose wise idea it was to send us on this retreat. I don't need rehabilitation.
I don't need a bunch of hot cowboys telling me what to do. I don't need anyone trying to be my friend.
I just want to go home and put this nightmare behind me. I just spent a year in prison for something I didn't do, now I have to endure this?
I can't deny that the ranchers are gorgeous, and Lake is unlike any man I've ever met. Even though they made him my own personal guard.
They don't trust me. He doesn't trust me. I'm trouble, according to them.
He hates it about as much as I do, and I make a vow to keep him on his toes.
I'm not one to follow rules. I'll do what I want at this stupid retreat. There is one, small, problem though....
A stablehand goes missing. Vanishes.
It’s not heavy enough to drench, but enough to be annoying. The dim lights of the gas station in front of us has a lump forming in my throat. I’ve spent the last five minutes trying to figure out what to say, to get this to stop.

So far, nothing is working.

“You need to stop, Davina,” my voice comes out croaky, quiet, “this is a bad idea. Someone is going to get hurt.”

My hands fumble together as I try to stop my longtime friend, Davina, from doing something crazy. Something as crazy as standing up a gas station for money. Things are hard, they’ve been hard for some time, but this plan ... it’s dangerous. It’s not the kind of plan you actually carry out. Sure, we’ve spoken about it, we have even worked out how we’re going to do it, but now that we’re here I’m not so sure.

It doesn’t feel right.

The cold gun in my hand.

The look on the young girl’s face at the counter as she shuffles through some stock items, oblivious to what’s about to happen.

Mostly, the cold stare in my friend’s eyes.

We haven’t eaten for two days, not for a lack of trying, but we’re struggling, and we’re broke, and by the time we pay rent and Davina pays for her habit, there is nothing left. Nobody will hire her, or me for that matter. We’re from the rougher side of town, a place nobody wants their staff coming from. I have no experience; my life isn’t that grand. I haven’t had the chance to work and create a name for myself.

No. The path laid out for me is much, much more dangerous than that.

We’re the kids from broken homes, tossed around in a system that doesn’t care about you. They’ll do anything to just move you on and forget your name. You’re nothing more than a number and they’ll be sure to make you know it. Davina and I are all each other has ever had, but right now, the choice she’s making...it’s killing me.

“Nobody is going to get hurt,” Davina says, pressing the gun closer to her chest so any passersby won’t see it. “Just stick to the plan. We’ll be in and out.”

It’s late, the flickering streetlight is the only sound that can be heard. There are no cars, no people, nothing around at this time of the night. It’s just a cold, empty, deserted place.

That’s why we picked it.

It’s in the rundown neighborhood, where nobody cares about the people living and working here.

We have it on good authority the security system is currently down. You know things when you live the way we do. You can find out practically anything you want, and you are sure to always be one step ahead of the law.

We have much working in our favor tonight, yet everything about it feels wrong.

“She’s in there all alone, something will go wrong,” I say, shaking my head. “I don’t want to do this.”

“It’s too late for that,” Davina growls, glaring at me before turning and striding right toward the front door.

I have only seconds to stop her and my attempts are futile. She’s going in there, and my gut tells me something is going to go wrong. I have to stop her because that girl in there doesn’t deserve to be scared in the way she’s about to. She doesn’t deserve to be afraid to come to work. This was a bad idea, and I’m not going to let it continue. I should have never even let her tell me about it to begin with.

What was I thinking?

This was never going to work.

Not ever.

Davina walks in the front door, and I’m on her tail, reaching out to stop her, to pull her arm down, to stop her flashing her gun around.

“No,” I say, just as she holds the weapon up. “Davina, stop.”

The girl looks up from the counter and her eyes widen. It’s too late to prevent the fear. I can see it written all over her face. Labored breaths leave my body as I freeze, watching as Davina screams at the girl to open the register. I can’t move, my legs are numb, and it’s only then that I realize I have a gun in my hand.

Snap out of it, Willa.

I shove the gun into my coat and step toward Davina. “Stop,” I plead, my eyes scanning her cold face as she doesn’t take her eyes off the girl who is frantically fumbling to get the money out. “She hasn’t done anything wrong.”

“You’re either with me, or against me, Willa. If you’re against me, get the fuck out and find your own food.”

My hand trembles as I place it on my friend's arm. “Just lower the gun, there is another way.”
The crying, the diapers, the late nights, the early mornings. The laughter, the smiles, the joy, the blessing.
I get it. I’m living it. I love it. I also know that sometimes, moms need a break.
A rest away from the world, away from their troubles, away from the everyday hustle and bustle.
A ranch retreat run by hot cowboys for a month? I’ll pay double.
One whole month of nothing but fun and adventures. I don’t think those cowboys knew what they were in for when they signed us up.
We’re the ones they all talk about. Too loud. Too casual. Too rude. Drink too much, talk too much, swear too much… You know. Those moms.
We love our kids more than life itself, but we’re a god damned mess. We need a break. We need those men to ride us as hard as they ride them horses…
Well, I do anyway. Did I mention I’m single? Oh, I am. Did I mention I have secrets?
Whoops. I guess I do. Did I mention I’m a hot mess? They’re about to find out just how much.

“Sing that once more and I’m going to come over there and fly kick you right in your pretty face,” I warn, raising a finger to my sister who is skipping around me singing her version of Dune buggy.

“Little blue June buggggy, in my hand ...”

I launch at her, arms circling her waist as I pull her to the ground, our laughter trailing through the living room. She squeals with delight as she wiggles out from my grip and runs around, proceeding to sing the song I absolutely loathe. She’s been doing it since the moment she could talk, and not a single day goes by where she doesn’t wake up and sing that song to me.

“Seriously, Aspen, stop.”

She skips off into the kitchen, her little voice trailing out as she continues with her song.

When you look back on those moments, the ones where you don’t know what’s going to come next, you find yourself wondering if there were signs. Did you have an indication something would happen? Did you know? Did anything happen that day that made you suspect your entire world would be turned upside down?

I know I didn’t.

I wish I could go back and call my sister back in, I wish I could take her hand and skip around the room with her like I used to when I was younger, singing that song at the top of my lungs as we laughed and danced. I would do anything to hear her voice fill our house with that song just one more time.

I didn’t know.

I didn’t know that she would run outside, so wrapped up in her own little world that she wouldn’t see the drunk driver swerving down our street.

I didn’t know that she would collide with that car.

I didn’t know that her life —her short, beautiful life — would end right there.

I didn’t know.

If I had known, would I have changed that day?

Could I have changed it?

Or is that the whole purpose of life?

You can’t change a path that has already been mapped out.

You can only choose how you pave the rest of the way.

I’d do anything to change that day.

But I couldn’t.

No matter how hard I tried.

1

Years later

“Hey, lady, wake up.”

I open my eyes, the world spinning around me as I look up into what must be the entirety of my spank bank all wrapped into one, gorgeous piece of man. I mean, words can’t describe what I’m looking at right now, which makes me wonder if I’m dreaming. Am I dreaming?

I don’t even know where I am.

Did he kidnap me? I can’t say I’d be sad if he did. Hell, I’d probably welcome it. Imagine being tortured by this fine specimen?

“Am I dead?” I ask, rubbing a hand over my face.

God, I’m drunk.

I’m so drunk.

I didn’t realize it at first, but now...oh now...my head is spinning, and my entire body feels foreign to me. I can’t feel my legs, which is both scaring and weird. What the ever-loving hell did I do?

“You’re not dead, but you will be if you stay out here any longer.”

Out here?

Where the hell is here?

I squint, looking up at Prince Charming again. “Care to tell me where here is?”

He looks a mixture of horrified and impressed as he stares at me, eyes narrowed, lips slightly pursed. “Fuck me, how much did you drink?”

What a stupid question. “Well, if I knew, I wouldn’t be here, would I?”

He exhales, reaching down and carefully pulling me to my feet. It’s then I realize I was on the ground, in the dirt, out in the freezing cold. My head pounds as I get to my feet, and even though I try my hardest, my body does not want to do what I’m asking of it, and I find myself clinging to the hot stranger who is currently taking all my body weight.

“You’re at a retreat, remember?”

Oh.

Shit.

I remember alright.

We are on a month-long retreat, this one for mothers. There are eight of us, and we’re all quite different and mostly perfect strangers, but boy did we drink some wine on the trip here. I literally don’t remember a single thing after that. My memory is completely blank, and that’s more than a little terrifying.

I haven’t had that much to drink since I was a teenager and could handle the hangover the day after. I already know what this is going to do to me tomorrow, and I’m not looking forward to it.

At all.

“Right,” I murmur. “I guess we made it then.”

Hot rancher stares at me, his eyes narrowing as he looks down. “You don’t remember a fuckin’ thing, do you?”

This is the moment when you know what he’s about to say is going to horrify you and make you feel shame on a level so deep, you’ll wish you were buried in a hole.
The newest series by USA TODAY bestselling author Bella Jewel, coming 2022...
Firstly, let me make this clear, I didn’t come here for drama. I came here to escape, to unwind, to relax in paradise. This place is meant to be everything epic the world can offer.
A ranch, run by hot tattooed mountain men, that has been made into a retreat. An escape from the world, from all the stresses of daily life.
Not only do you get to interact with said gorgeous men, but you get to be involved in the everyday running of the ranch, that is when you’re not hiking, fishing, riding horses, and relaxing.
We’re the first group to camp hot stuff, and for what seems like the shortest time, it’s bliss. Hot, cowboy bliss.
Horses and mountains, rivers and campfires. It’s exactly what I need. Don’t get me started on the man who seems scarily into me, even though I’m about as fun as a stone on the ground.
I’m also as ugly as one. Okay, that’s a bit over the top. I’m not ugly. I am, however, nerdy. Men like him don’t look at girls like me…right?
I have curves and glasses and my hair isn’t Sunkissed blond. Still, everything is going beautifully…until a body shows up. As if we’re in some sort of bad romantic comedy.
One of my people…mine…is dead. Murdered. And now my little vacation has turned into a god damned murder mystery.
With hot men, a camp full of nerds, and a whole lot of unanswered questions. This should be fun. A bloody good time, if you will…
As blood pools around the young woman’s head, she’s forced to accept the fact that she’s dead. Her soul, no longer with us on this empty earth ...

For crying out loud.

What the hell is wrong with me today? Empty earth? Someone needs to take me out of this empty bloody earth. I might as well throw my notebook on the ground and burn it, that’s how terrible my work is.

Why can’t I write today?

I slap my pen on my knee, as if that’ll change the utter trash coming from it.

Now I’m blaming the pen.

Exhaling, I swipe a sweaty strand of hair off my forehead and look up at the blazing sun. It could take a break, honestly. Why is it always so aggressive? I mutter a curse and find a shadier spot by a large tree. Leaning against it, I open my notebook.

Try again.

She wonders, as she nears the lifeless from, if he’s here. The man in the shadows. The man who has been everywhere, and yet, she can never get close. Is he the reason behind this murder? Is he the cold-blooded killer?

Great, now I sound like I’m writing in a bad doco series about murderers.

Surely, I can come up with something better than cold-blooded killer?

Death-defying monster?

Sweet mother of God.

Soulless monster?

So original.

I should just stick with band life and stay the hell away from writing.

But ... I know it’s in there.

Something about putting pen to paper calls to me.

I just can’t seem to get it right. What’s in my head never comes out onto the paper the way it should. Mysteries are my life; I should be able to write them in my sleep. I’ve watched just about every movie ever made that has even the slightest mystery, not to mention I’ve read them all. This should be as effortless as walking, yet here I am, writing trash like cold-blooded killer.

Could I get anymore unoriginal?

Skin prickling, she stands and moves closer to the shadowy figure. Wondering if this time he’ll leave, if this time he’ll just disappear like he has every other time she has tried to get close. She knows he has something to do with this, and yet ... she knows nothing about him. A mystery man, a monster in the darkness, a murderer?

Better.

Still not great.

I slam my pen down and slap my notebook shut.

If this keeps up, the shadowy figure will jump out wearing a clown suit and tell her that he’s her long-lost father and has been following her for years.

I snort.

Maybe this little break we’re taking to some new ranch retreat might help clear my mind.

Open me up to some sort of incredible writing inspiration that’ll make me a bestseller.

A girl can only dream, right?

1

“Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, we’re the first people using this facility. What if something goes wrong? Nobody has tested anything which means there could be an accident.”

“You read way too many books,” my long-time friend Kara says, rolling her eyes. “It’s going to be great.”

I scrunch my nose as we drive into the massive ranch that we just so happen to be the first customers to. It was built and created by a man named Rhett Walker and, with his group of friends, they made it into this retreat. You’re supposed to come out here for a month at a time, help out around the ranch, do activities, hikes, swimming, water sports, and everything else you can possibly think of that will benefit your mental health.

I saw a news report about Rhett and why he decided to open this place. It was interesting. He comes from a strong country family, and the ranch has been passed down through his family, or something like that, but he decided to take it in a different way. In honor of his mother, who passed because of suicide, he decided to make a place where anyone and everyone could come, book the whole thing out, and take some time away from the world.

It's incredible.

Did I mention that the guys who run it look like they’re straight out of a western porno? I mean that in the best possible way, of course. They’re gorgeous, all muscled, tattooed, masculine men in flannels rolled up at the elbows, just like they should be. It’s like the new age cowboys. Gone are the clean-shaven faces, the tight blue jeans, and the big hats. These guys are mountain men. Big, burly mountain men. But they operate a ranch, so I guess they must be a little cowboy, too.

“I don’t know,” I murmur, staring out the window at the trees passing by as we near.

“You need to relax, Lei, you’re freaking out and, honestly, I think it’ll be great for us. We’re well overdue for a break, we’ve been working so hard for finals, and we need this time to regroup. Everyone needs this.”
