We’d talked enough that I knew a lot about him. I knew he was young, but until we met, I hadn’t confronted the reality that he might be as young as my son.

He vibrated like he’d had several extra-large energy drinks before showing up at the site where we were doing surveillance. It was the first time he had agreed to be in the field with Vigilance. We needed to enter a government building, and security was extremely tight. Having Emilio there with us made it easier to communicate quickly and change plans on the fly.

He confessed that he rarely left his apartment, but I promised to keep him safe and assured him I would be the only one in the surveillance van with him. He’d accepted my terms, letting me know he trusted me, and my chest had warmed in an unexpected way. I was intrigued by him. I enjoyed our conversations, but he was an employee, a person with skills essential to making the mission work.

I’d already known there was a level of trust and respect between us. I knew enough about him to fuck up his career, enough to get him killed. I hadn’t chosen to ask, but I imagined he knew equally as much damaging information about me. I wore a ski mask, as I usually did when in the field, but it was likely pointless. I suspected Emilio knew my real-world identity, which meant he could expose me. He could ruin my sister’s career, but I didn’t think he would.

My years in special forces had taught me to be a good judge of character. Occasionally I still fucked up, but if I didn’t take chances, I’d never succeed in meting out the justice the worst of the worst deserved. That was my calling. I’d been where I belonged, leading an Army Ranger team, until a colleague fucked me over. Even if my retirement hadn’t been mandated, I couldn’t have worked with those commanders anymore.

When Emilio stepped into the surveillance van, he looked exactly as I’d imagined him, right down to the can of Monster Energy Ultra Violet in his hand, but I hadn’t been prepared for him to be so… beautiful. That word hardly did him justice, but I didn’t know the right descriptor. I considered myself straight. Sure, there had been men I’d found attractive. I’d spent years around men who worked hard to train their bodies to perfection. During my time as a Ranger, I’d found several of my fellow soldiers utterly gorgeous, but I’d never felt true sexual attraction to any of them. I appreciated their forms like I would a piece of art, but Emilio… Emilio was different.

My gaze dropped from his lips to the long pale line of his neck, noting the way his skin contrasted with his black hair which was already coming undone from the messy bun he’d gathered on top of his head. I wanted to taste him, to touch him. He looked terrified to be there, and I wanted to do whatever I could to comfort him.

“X?” When I met Emilio’s gaze, I saw his eyes were wide. I’d been staring at him like I was going to eat him. What the fuck was wrong with me?

“Yes, I’m X. Thank you for being here.”

“Um… You’re welcome.” He licked his lips, and I watched the movement of his tongue, mesmerized.

What was happening to me? No man had ever made me feel that way. Rarely had any woman had me as entranced, especially recently. I’d been so dedicated to work, both fundraising for the charities my family’s foundation supported and my work with Vigilance, the vigilante organization I oversaw, that I hadn’t taken much time for my personal life. I’d had the occasional hookup, but the encounters were more about a release of tension with quick, raw pleasure, nothing that made my heart race the way the young man in front of me did.

Maybe I was just feeling the effect of too much pent-up need. That had to be it. It had been too long since I’d actually considered any of the numerous offers I received from women. The problem was, most of them weren’t people I would enjoy spending time with. That shouldn’t matter for sex. If we brought each other pleasure, that should be enough. I didn’t like thinking about it, but it was possible I had just as strong a need for companionship.

Ugh. That made me sound like some romantic sap. And while I could appreciate others’ need for romantic love, I didn’t have time for that kind of complication in my life, not if I was going to fulfill my dual mission of running the Carrington Foundation and going after the same types of motherfuckers I’d eliminated in the army.
So far so good and much better than my last job, which had ended abruptly when I’d dropped a whole tray of food on my first customers. The café’s breakfast rush was slowing, and I finally had a moment to catch my breath.

When I glanced up from pouring myself a glass of water, I nearly choked. The hottest man I’d ever seen had just walked in. I stood there, frozen, mouth hanging open, watching as he made his way to a table in my section.

Holy fuck. How was I supposed to take his order when all I could do was stare?

He was several inches over six feet with dark hair, a scruffy beard, and the most amazing muscular arms. I took a sip of my water, but it did nothing to cool me down.

Cathy, my aunt and the owner of the café, moved closer to me as she wiped down the counter. “That’s Leo. He owns the tattoo shop across the street.”

“Wow.” I saw tattoos on his forearms where he’d pushed up the sleeves of his sweater. I wondered how much more of him was inked. When I’d moved to Boston a few months ago, I’d noticed Devilish Ink was open again. The last time I’d visited Aunt Cathy, it seemed to have gone out of business.

She grinned. “He’s something else, but be warned. He goes through men like I go through coffee.”

I’d lost count of the cups of coffee she’d downed since my shift started, but instead of sending me a warning, my mind was processing the word men. “He likes men?”

“As many as he can get.”

So he wasn’t a relationship guy. I could do casual. It wasn’t like relationships had ever worked for me. I needed to give up on the idea of finding my Prince Charming.

Cathy shook her head as if she knew exactly what I was thinking. “Could you really be satisfied with just one night with a man like that?”

I sighed as I kept staring. I wanted to say yes, but I knew the answer was no.

“He’s more trouble than you need,” she added.

She was right, but he was so fucking hot. If he propositioned me, how could I say no?

“Go on.” She nudged my shoulder. “You’re back on the clock.”

I took a deep breath and willed myself to move.

I started to head for his table, then realized I was supposed to bring water for each customer. I filled a glass, and after one more calming breath, I approached him.

He was looking down at his phone when I tripped on something. What came next seemed to happen in slow motion. I tried to right myself, tried desperately to hold onto the water, but instead, I stumbled forward and fell against his table.

Somehow, Leo managed to jump up just before the glass leapt from my hand and upended all over his seat. I caught the glass as it rolled over the edge of the tabletop, so at least there weren’t any broken shards to deal with.

My kneeling position meant that when I turned around, I was staring right at the bulge in the front of Leo’s worn jeans. The very large bulge. Sadly, after that performance, there was no chance he’d ever show any interest in me.

I slowly forced my gaze up to his face, expecting him to start in on me and hoping he wouldn’t get physical. I had no doubt he could snap me in two.

He didn’t look angry, though. He looked… amused?

“I’m so sorry.” I needed to get a towel to wipe up the mess, but I couldn’t manage to do more than rise to my feet. Even then, I had to hold onto the table because my legs were shaking so hard.

“You’re new here,” Leo said.

“I… I am.” His golden-brown eyes had a predatory gleam as he studied me. “Um… towel. I’ll get a towel.”

I scurried away feeling like a mouse being watched by a hungry cat.

When I came back to wipe up the water, Leo was still standing. I glanced at the other side of the booth to make sure nothing had splashed on it. “The other side is dry if you’d like to sit down while I clean this up.”

He shook his head. “I never put my back to a room.”

I started to say he could take another table, then realized this one was in the corner. He’d chosen it deliberately. What had he done before reopening Devilish Ink? It couldn’t have been back in business for more than two years.

I’d read enough mysteries and thrillers to know cops like to keep their backs to the wall, but Leo didn’t look like a cop. He looked dangerous, like he might command a troop of mercenaries. Maybe he was an assassin.
When the fight to stop a crime ring leads me to join forces with a pawn shop owner, it’s hate at first sight.
Fun fact: Hate and desire aren’t mutually exclusive.
To further the investigation, Marcus and I must pretend to be boyfriends. Too much time spent in close proximity has me wondering if Marcus might have the power to thaw my icy heart.

Prologue

Niall

I disliked Marco Ricci from the moment we met. He was part of the team my boss had assembled to takedown an arms dealer. I first noticed him when he gave me a slow once-over as I walked into the warehouse where everyone had gathered to be briefed on their roles for the night.

Marco was an ally of a powerful mafia family—the Marchesis—who were also assisting in the takedown. His own family was also heavily involved in organized crime, but my intel said he’d broken ties with the other Riccis years ago. Marco wasn’t a nice man, but from what I could tell, he was just as interested in putting this arms dealer out of business as Vigilance—the underground group I belonged to—was.

I was former FBI, but I no longer worried about most of the illegal activities going on around me. Even when I was with the Bureau, we never thought we could bring down every criminal. We focused on the worst of the lot, which meant we sometimes worked with those who knew them best.

Marco primarily earned his living running a pawn shop that did legitimate business but also served as a base for fencing stolen goods, but that wasn’t my concern. What made me dislike him was his attitude. He scowled at me, rolled his eyes, and generally made it clear he couldn’t be bothered to listen to me as I explained our objectives.

When I got to the overview of the plan for storming the facility where the dealer kept his inventory, Marco appeared to pay more attention, but as soon as I finished speaking, he gave me a scathing look and said he hoped I wasn’t going to wear the suit I had on since it screamed fed and would tip the gun runners off.

I didn’t bother replying to him. “You have your orders,” I said by way of dismissal.

Marco just smirked at me.

That night when we went in—with me wearing black cargo pants and a black t-shirt, not a suit—I got pinned down. I was alone behind a stack of crates and taking fire. I would have to expose myself to get free, and my comm had gone out. Someone started returning fire on the enemy from the closest doorway. I realized it was Marco.

“Go! I’ve got you covered,” he yelled.

He took out two of the guys, and once I reached the doorway and had a better line of sight, I got the third.

“Thanks,” I said. “My comm is down.”

He actually fucking smiled. “You’re welcome. Nice shot, by the way.”

Our gazes met, and for a moment, my body heated. Then I shook my head and turned away. No way in hell did I want this annoying man, even if he was hot as hell. His dark hair was just long enough to have some curl, and he didn’t bother to control it. He had a scruffy beard and his eyes… They were almost black and too easy to get lost in.

Marco lifted a brow, but a second later, his expression turned serious. He pointed to his ear. Someone was speaking to him. I kept lookout as he listened.

“He’s with me. His comm’s down…Yes, we’re clear.” He smiled and turned to me. “We got the bastards.”

We high-fived, and that simple contact sent electricity down my arm. That was so not good. At least Marco wasn’t someone we worked with regularly. Maybe I’d never have to work with him again, because there was no way in hell I was going to act on this strange attraction.

The team met up for debrief, and when that was done, I heard some of the guys talking about going out, but I wanted a long hot shower and some quiet. A lot of guys like to party after a successful mission, but I usually needed either time to think it all through and reflect or a good, hard fuck.

I was about to head for the SUV I’d parked down the road when Marco called out to me.

“Are you going out for drinks?”

“No. I’m heading home.”

“Probably best. The bar’s in a sketchy part of town. You wouldn’t want to get any smudges on this perfectly pressed shirt, would you?” He brushed his hand over my chest, and the heat of it almost made me step back. My traitorous cock began to swell, and I tried to think of anything but how earthy and masculine he smelled as he stood much too close.

“No, that’s not—”

“You’d rather go home and jerk off over your closet of suits or stacks of spreadsheets or something?”

Anger had me tightening my fists.

Marco just grinned. “You’re almost too fucking easy.”

“Do you want to take this somewhere else?” The words seemed to shock him almost as much as they did me.

When he managed to close his mouth, he nodded. “Fuck yes.”

“Did you drive here?”
I’d been working around the clock to finish enough pieces for a gallery exhibition, and I’d started all but the last painting. If I stared at it any longer trying to figure out what it needed, I might rip it to shreds, so I was going out.

I was going to dance until I was sweaty and my legs felt like Jell-O, then I was going to get laid. Not just any old bathroom quickie. I wanted to be utterly destroyed.

Decision made, I headed for my closet. I was leaving my apartment for the first time in days, and I wanted to look damn good. I shimmied into my tightest black jeans and selected a shimmery purple shirt that made my blue eyes look almost violet. I added some black boots with chunky heels. I was only five six and liked the extra height.

I studied myself in the bathroom mirror and considered my hair. It looked as wild as I imagined it would after raking my hands through it while I worked, and I tamed it with some gel. I debated about eyeliner, then decided to go for it. I added some lip gloss and assessed my overall look.

Totally fuckable.

Exactly what I was going for.

The hot guy in the mirror was just as much me as the disheveled artist I’d been for the last several days.

Before I headed out, I made sure the door to the second bedroom, which I’d turned into an art studio, was closed so there was no chance of my cat, Mittens, sneaking in and wreaking havoc. I loved the curious little girl like crazy, but I couldn’t chance anything ruining my work. In the year since I’d quit school, deciding to ignore the wishes of my mother and stepfather and follow my dream of being a professional artist, I’d found an amazing agent, had several showings, won multiple awards, and sold numerous pieces. I was well on my way to the success I’d dreamed of.

I filled Mittens’s food bowl and scratched her ears. “Be a good girl. I’ll be back later.”

My phone beeped, letting me know my car had arrived, and I rushed out the door.

Earlier that week, I’d seen Alan, an older man I’d made the mistake of dating, sitting in his car watching my building. When I’d first told him I didn’t want to see him again, he’d continued to text and call incessantly. Then he’d shown up at my door. I hadn’t let him in, but the next week, he’d sent his driver up to get me. The man had tried to break in. I’d called the police, but he’d been gone when they arrived, and the police officers who’d shown up didn’t seem interested in pursuing the situation, not that I expected them to take a young, obviously gay man seriously.

It had taken Alan breaking into my apartment and leaving threatening messages in paint on my unused canvases to finally get a restraining order against him, but as long as he wasn’t actually in my building or approaching me, there was nothing I could do. Thankfully, I’d gotten a security system, and there was no sign of Alan now. Did I dare to hope he’d finally given up? Surely there were plenty of other young, naive artists he could intimidate.

Traffic wasn’t as bad as I expected for a weekend night in Boston. I thanked the driver and hopped out in front of Ignite, my favorite club. As soon as I walked through the door, I felt more relaxed than I had in weeks. The thrill of being part of a crowd, the pulse of the music, the flash of sequins and glitter on the dance floor was exactly what I needed to distract me from work and my pain-in-the-ass ex.

I headed straight for the dance floor, needing to join the crowd and let myself move. I stayed out there, dancing, grinding, and flirting until I was exhausted and thirsty. Several guys had made their interest clear, but none of them were what I was looking for tonight. I wanted someone older, someone strong, who would hold me down and use me roughly. I wanted to be forced to surrender to a hard, wild fuck.

The only man I’d seen who’d sparked my interest was sitting at a table watching the dance floor. As I stared at him, he turned my way, and our eyes met. He had wavy dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. His muscles strained his black t-shirt, making me want to run my tongue over his gorgeous arms. He inclined his head, acknowledging me, and my cock stirred. I willed him to move toward me, but he stayed put. Normally I wasn’t shy about asking for what I wanted, but something about the intensity of his stare made me shiver. My instincts told me he was dangerous, but dangerous was what I wanted tonight.
