Cristina
In this house of lies and liars, behind every locked door is a monster in wait. Forced to marry a man I hate, I am now bound to Damian. There’s something between us that needs to be played out. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know that he does. But he and I are locked together for some strange, grim purpose.
Will we survive it? He may since he’s the one pulling the strings. But will I?

Damian
My brother will tell you that I usurped his throne and maybe I did, but that’s too bad. I built our family up from the ashes. I put us back at the top of the food chain. And marrying Cristina was as much to cement my place as it was to keep her safe.
She doesn’t believe that last part yet, but I see how she clings to me in the darkness. And the lock on her door is as much to keep the monsters out as it is to keep her in. I told her one lie, though. I made her a promise I’m not sure I ever meant to keep. I told her I’d let her go once I had what I wanted.
But in a world of monsters, I need her like man needs air. And I have no intention of letting her go.

Books in Series:

Unholy Union Series by Natasha Knight

Books by Author:

Natasha Knight

1

Cristina

“Welcome home, Brother.”

I look up at Damian. Beautiful Damian.

He shifts his gaze to mine.

“Didn’t I tell you to leave the locked doors alone?” he asks me, but his voice is strange. Echoing in this dusty, forgotten place.

The music starts again. That eerie sound of piano keys played slowly, so fitting to this place, this room, this house.

My head is spinning.

The other man, Damian’s brother, says something. His voice is similar to Damian’s but off. Like his face. Wrong.

Damian tucks hair behind my ear.

I push his hand away, push his arms away. I turn slowly. They’re both watching me now, waiting to see what I’ll do.

And the tune keeps playing, the chords slow. Sad.

I need to look at him.

Can they hear my heartbeat? Blood beats like a drum against my ears.

Run.

Run.

But I can’t run. I meet a monster at every turn. One standing behind me. The other holding me.

He warned me about the monsters. How many more hide in this house?

“Cristina,” Damian says.

I keep turning, my body still pressed to Damian’s.

I’ve taken shelter in my enemy’s arms.

He’s in my periphery now. The monster. The brother. Tall, like Damian. I see the coat. It’s wet. He was the man walking back toward the house. It wasn’t Damian at all. What is out there that they go to see in the dead of night?

Dark hair.

Identical twins.

It’s easy to tell them apart now though.

My eyes finally find the monster’s eyes. My breath catches in my throat.

I remember when I was little, and I stared at Damian’s damaged hand. But this? This is worse.

Much worse.

His face…I see Damian in it. In half of it. The damage on the other half, no, not quite half. It’s from the corner of his eye back into his hairline, one ear gone. It’s like Damian’s hand, his arm.

Melted skin.

“Not as pretty as my brother, am I?” he asks too casually, tone mocking like Damian’s can sometimes be.

I move to break free, to run, but Damian captures my arms. He holds me still, making me face his brother.

I want to close my eyes, to turn my face away, but I can’t do either because I can’t stop looking.

And as if to accommodate me, Damian’s brother shifts his position, giving me the full effect of the damage.

“Let me go.” It’s a whispered plea because I can’t make my voice work. I’m sure Damian doesn’t hear me. I think my lips are moving, but even I don’t hear more than my wavering breath.

Damian says something, but his words have to battle the blood thudding against my ears to be heard.

The brother grins. His gaze slides over me. The look in his eyes when he returns them to mine has me pressing my back into Damian.

He walks toward us.

A sound comes from inside my throat, a garbled choke on a scream.

It’s not his face that has me terrified, though. It’s the look in his eyes.

Damian won’t back away and his brother just keeps coming closer. My hands grab onto Damian’s. I’m pulling and scratching as his brother comes so near that I can smell the forest and the rain on him. Feel the chill coming off of him.

“Pretty,” he says, raising a hand but thinking better of touching me when I cry out. “I can’t help how I look, you know,” he says. “Ask my brother. The fault lies with him, after all.”

Damian’s fault?

He does touch me then. He takes my hand, the one with the ring on it, and my legs tremble.

Damian holds me up, steadies me.

His brother drops my arm like he’s tossing something away. His expression darkens chilling me through. I want out of here. I need to get away from him. I’m sure if it weren’t for Damian, I’d be on the ground now. A whimpering, pathetic heap at their feet.

“Are you taking good care of her for me, Brother?” he asks.

His fingers are on my face then. Cold fingers. Cold breath. Cold heart.

And this time, when my knees give out and the music fades away I don’t fight it. I give myself over to it, feel myself slip away, my vision going black.

2

Damian

Cristina lies limp in my arms, head back, lips slightly parted and eyes closed as I carry her back to her room to lay her on her bed.

Once there, she opens her eyes with a start, bolting upright, almost smashing her head into mine. She claws at my arms.

“Easy,” I tell her.

Seeing my brother without a warning will give anyone a shock. Hell, even with warning, it’ll scare the fuck out of most.

She makes a sound, pushes against me.

I collect her wrists in my hands and hold onto her. “I said easy.”

She looks around her room. Is she reassured by its familiarity? Because after a moment, she does relax a little.

I look down at her. Black smears her face and rings her eyes. She’s still wearing the dress from earlier, but it’s wrinkled, the hem dirty. A mess. She’s barefoot and shivering all over.
Cristina
On the night I met Damian Di Santo, he warned me that monsters don’t hide in the dark. That instead they stand in the light and look you straight in the eye so you can see them. See the evil in their eyes.
I knew then that he was one of those monsters. That was the night the countdown began. Marked by dead roses and sharp thorns, eight years passed each bringing me closer to becoming his. Until the eve of my eighteenth birthday when he returned to claim me.
To begin our unholy union.

Damian
Circumstance put Cristina on my path. Fate bound her to me.
Cristina and I share a common past. A single night that changed the course of our lives.
She asked me if I was a monster the night I first met her. I am. But the beast that mercilessly hunts its prey fiercely protects what’s his.
The countdown that began eight years ago has ended. Her time is up. On the stroke of midnight, she’s mine.

Books in Series:

Unholy Union Series by Natasha Knight

Books by Author:

Natasha Knight

1

Cristina

I was born one minute past midnight not quite a full year after my brother. My mother said we were inseparable from the beginning. Even sharing a room right up until he was gone.

The paper I’m holding feels like it’s on fire. The lights flicker and come back on like they were waiting for him to leave. I blink, my eyes adjusting.

“Christ,” my uncle’s voice barely registers.

I drop back into the seat and drag my gaze from the contract up to him.

“What is this?” I ask.

Although my uncle has never been unkind to me, he’s never been overly affectionate either. I always got the feeling he handled me with kid gloves. He didn’t want to have much to do with me, not when I was younger and not now. I’ve had strict rules growing up, much stricter than my cousins, but he’s always given me anything I could ever want. Only a few times has he ever raised his voice to me. Although he did let the nanny raise me for the most part, so it’s not as if he had many opportunities.

And it’s not that I feel unwelcome in his home, but I know it is his home. Not mine. I know I’m a niece, not his own daughter. Not that I ever wanted to be, but he’s different with Liam and Simona. I don’t know, maybe that’s normal. Not that anything about my situation is normal.

But it’s not as though my dad and I were close. He was closer to Scott, and I was always closer to my mom.

I drop the contract onto my lap and wipe my tears with the heels of my hands.

Dead roses scatter the floor, the box turned on its side with black paper spilling out. It would be beautiful if it wasn’t so horrible.

I see Liam approach from down the hall. He looks around, anger burning in his eyes. My uncle stops him when he moves toward the front doors as if he might go after Damian.

What did Damian say before he left?

Come midnight, you belong to me.

I look at my uncle to find him watching me. He’s always done that. Sort of watched me as though I were some strange, foreign creature. It’s unnerving, not creepy, but just not right either.

Tonight though, that look in his eyes, it makes me think that whatever this is, what Damian just said about midnight, it’s true.

He pours himself a generous serving of whiskey while ignoring Liam’s questions. When he turns back, I see how the lines on his forehead and around the outsides of his eyes seem to have deepened. He swallows half the liquid in the glass, wincing with the burn.

“You knew?” Liam asks him, sounding furious. “You knew he’d come for her and you did nothing?”

What?

He steps up to his father, hands fisted at his sides. He’s almost as tall as my uncle, and from his build, I know he’ll be as big. Although, he’s not there yet and something makes me want to protect him. To tell him to back off.

“You knew and you just let it happen!”

My uncle’s jaw tightens as he finishes off his whiskey. “You don’t understand the circumstances,” he says tightly.

“What circumstances could possibly make this okay?”

“You’re here, aren’t you? Your sister’s here?”

“What?”

“Fuck.” My uncle turns his back, pouring himself another drink. He swallows it in one go before facing us again. He glances at my cousin but then focuses his attention on me.

“You need to be careful with him, Cristina. He’s a very dangerous man.”

“What are you talking about? What the hell is happening?”

“Shit.” Running his hand through his hair, he mutters another curse before straightening, taking a deep breath in. “Come with me.”

I look up at him. He’s heading toward his study, a place I’m rarely invited. I get to my feet to follow him, carrying the contract in my hand.

He stands at the open door and waits for me.

“I want to hear it too,” Liam says from inside.

We both turn to him. “This has nothing to do with you, son. You won’t have any part of it.”

“But I—”

“I said no.”

Just then Simona walks into the living room rubbing her eyes. “Liam?”

“Go stay with your sister. She’s scared,” My uncle tells him.

Although reluctant, Liam goes. He’s a good big brother like Scott was to me.

My uncle turns to me. “Cristina,” he says, gesturing for me to enter. I do and he closes the door.

“Sit down,” he tells me and walks to a cabinet inside which is a safe.

I sit on one of the two chairs and watch as he enters the combination. I listen to the beep and pop when the door opens. From inside, he takes a stack of papers, selects what he wants and puts the rest back, then returns to me. He sets the papers on his desk and takes his seat behind it.
Monsters don’t hide in the dark.
When I met Damian Di Santo in a dark corridor of my family home I knew he was a monster.
I was a scared little girl. He was already a man.
That was when his twisted countdown began.
Marked by dead roses with sharp thorns, eight years passed each bringing me closer to becoming his. Until the eve of my eighteenth birthday.
That was the night he returned to claim me.
Unholy: The Beginning is a prologue to the Unholy Union Duet. It will be available as a free read on all sites.
I stare at it, waiting for it to come back on, willing it to, but it doesn’t.

I know I’m not the only ten-year-old who’s afraid of the dark, but tonight, the raging thunderstorm is too loud and if there’s one thing I know, it’s that thunderstorms bring bad things.

I used to like them but not anymore.

Lightning crashes, and something that looks too much like an old, bony finger taps against the glass of the window. I know it’s just a branch, but that constant tap-tap-tapping has me hugging the blanket closer.

I reach to switch on the lamp on the nightstand. It clicks, but nothing happens. I try again. Nothing.

The power’s out. That’s all. The lightning must have knocked it out. The house is old. It happens a lot with storms. I’ll just go and ask my nanny, Lisa, for a glass of water.

Hugging my stuffed rabbit, Sofia, I push the blanket off. I take a peek over the edge of the bed before sliding my legs over the side of it relieved when my toes graze the soft carpet, and nothing happens.

No monsters under the bed. I’m safe.

I stand and walk quietly toward my closed door, and just as I reach it, another blast of lightning sends a flash of bright light into my room. I gasp because I see the eyes of my dolls, bright and shiny and watching me like they’re living things.

Quickly I turn the doorknob, pull the door open, and rush out into the hallway.

They’re angry, the dolls. I don’t play with them anymore. I asked my father to put them away, but he won’t. Just like the other, empty bed in my room. He won’t change anything since that night.

“Lisa?” I say as I quietly open her bedroom door.

She doesn’t answer.

“Lisa?” I ask again.

But when I peek inside, I see that her bed is still made. It hasn’t been slept in and she’s not here. Maybe it’s not as late as I think and she’s still downstairs.

I hug Sofia closer and tell her not to be afraid.

Using memory and my fingertips along the wall, I walk toward the stairs. I keep to the edge where the carpet doesn’t reach, and the hardwood floors are cold under my feet. When I get to the top of the stairs, I look down to the first floor. Colored light comes in from the stained glass of the double front doors, but otherwise, the house is dark.

I begin my descent down the stairs. I know where they creak, so I’m as quiet as a mouse. When I’m halfway down, I stand on the tips of my toes to peer over the bannister. Voices are coming from farther down the hall in my father’s study. It’s where he spends most of his time.

Lisa’s probably in there.

I continue down the rest of the stairs, still keeping quiet, but forget about the spot on the last step. When I put my foot down, the wood creaks too loud in this emptiness.

I freeze because something tells me I need to be quiet. I need to not be here. Biting my lip, I listen, waiting, but no one comes.

Those voices grow louder, though. And I don’t hear Lisa. I recognize my father as he speaks to another man. Someone I don’t know. I pass the kitchen, creeping down the hall toward the study.

“I lost, too,” my father says, sounding strange. I know from the tone of his words he’s talking about that night. He used to be different before then. Laughing. Always laughing. We were a happy family once.

“Not enough,” a man replies and the coldness in his voice makes me shudder.

I hear the sound of furniture being moved, a chair maybe, scraping against the polished wood, followed by a sob. I’d never heard my father cry before the accident, but I know the sound well now. I wish I didn’t.

“Leave her be,” he finally says after a silence that I think will last forever.

“I can’t do that, and you know it.”

“She’s a little girl.”

There’s a long silence, and I hold my breath so as not to make any sound.

“Are you willing to buy her childhood then?” the stranger finally asks.

My father weeps.

“Well?” the man asks after a long minute.

I should do something. Call someone. Lisa. She’ll know what to do. But where is she?

Something squeaks, the sound of wheels? Like a bicycle inside the house. Scott always rode his bike inside even though he wasn’t allowed. He never got in trouble for it. No one ever got angry with my brother. Or when they did they didn’t stay angry.

“Please,” my father starts to speak, but his voice is muffled, and I can only make out the last words, “—a child.”

“Children grow into adults,” says the other man. “Get on with it.”
