Alphas don’t submit. They can’t. It’s a fundamental fact of life.

But when Anthony Blake’s rut turns deadly, Michael Terlaine has an impossible choice: Do the unthinkable and submit, or watch his best friend die.

The act should have been degrading. Instead, it awakens a part of Michael that shouldn’t exist. Desire. Craving. Obsession.

Anthony remembers nothing, but he knows Michael is different—a bewildering, intoxicating mix of subservience and aggression. One touch could ignite a fire they can’t control… and reveal the secret that would ruin them both

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

“Leave me.”

The words came out low and strained through Anthony’s gritted teeth. His broad shoulders were rigid, his breath ragged. He was sweating, but the stench of alpha pheromones—thick, sharp, and domineering—was far more abrasive than the sweat.

Michael covered his nose with his hand, trying to breathe shallowly. His every instinct screamed. The proximity of another alpha in rut made it nearly impossible to stay still. The urge to bare his teeth and fight clawed at him, growing harder to suppress with every passing second.

“You know I can’t do that,” Michael said, with forced levity. “And where would I go? We’re literally in the middle of nowhere.”

They were. Planet Belith was a Class F world—it had breathable air, but it was unsuitable for colonization due to its extreme volcanic activity and dangerous native predators. The former was why they were stranded here, after an eruption had damaged their ship. The latter was why Anthony was in rut.

In hindsight, maybe they should have been more careful. But there was no way they could’ve known the thing they were hunting carried venom that did... this.

“You sure the long-range communicator’s busted too?” Anthony bit out.

“Yes,” Michael snapped, sharper than he’d intended. “I’ve checked twice. There’s no signal.” He sighed and started pacing. “I knew we shouldn’t have come here. We could’ve picked literally any other planet—one that didn’t want to kill us—just to scratch your itch for danger.”

Anthony’s scent spiked. He turned his head and growled, low and warning.

Michael fought the urge to react. It took everything he had not to stiffen, not to bare his teeth in response. He was better than that. Stronger than his instincts. Anthony was his friend.

“I’m not blaming you,” he said, striving for calm, for something placating. It wasn’t very convincing, but under the circumstances, that was understandable.

Anthony’s blue eyes pinned him for a moment before he turned away, dragging a hand through his dark hair. “You should,” he said curtly. “I never should have brought you along.”

Michael scoffed. “And what? You would’ve just died here alone?”

A harsh laugh tore from Anthony’s throat. “It’s not exactly comforting knowing you’ll watch me be reduced to little better than an animal before I die. I’d like to keep some dignity.”

“You’re not going to die,” Michael said tightly, his stomach twisting with unease. It had been in knots ever since the medical droid had delivered the prognosis: Anthony was unlikely to survive this unnatural rut. It wasn’t a normal rut. They had no antidote for the strange venom that had triggered it, and they were stranded—far from civilization, far from any omegas who might have helped Anthony through it.

“We both know that’s not true,” Anthony said without looking at him. He drew in a slow breath and then added quietly, “I can feel it, Michael.”

A shiver crawled up Michael’s spine.

“Feel what?” he said.

“Feel my control slipping. I’m hanging on by a thread,” Anthony muttered, heaving a sigh as he rubbed a hand over his face. “And your presence isn’t helping. You stink. No offense.”

Michael let out a humorless laugh. “None taken. You don’t exactly smell like flowers, either.”

Honestly, it was a miracle they hadn’t come to blows yet. As a rule, alphas didn’t tolerate each other’s presence during a rut—territorial instincts always flared too hot, friendship be damned.

Then again, the fact that they were such good friends in the first place was a bit of a miracle, too.

Anthony Blake had first reached out to him five years ago to apologize on his younger brother’s behalf after Liam had very publicly rejected Michael’s suit. They’d ended up grabbing a drink, discovered a few shared interests—like hunting and racing—and something had just clicked.

It hadn’t been just the hobbies, though. Michael’s laid-back attitude balanced Anthony’s dry sarcasm and biting cynicism. In the years since, there hadn’t been many days when Michael hadn’t seen him.

Michael knew their closeness surprised people. Even setting aside the awkwardness of his failed courtship of Anthony’s brother, most alphas struggled to maintain real friendships. Their territorial instincts usually got in the way. But it had never been like that with him and Ant.

That said, it would be a lie to say they’d never butted heads. They had. There were times Anthony’s abrasive, domineering personality grated on Michael’s nerves. Times when his sharp alpha scent made Michael’s hackles rise, instinct flaring hot with the urge to assert dominance.
Forced to marry an alpha three times his age after his first heat, Lucien no longer believes in happily ever after. Bound by a marriage of convenience to a distant husband who loves his first spouse, Lucien doesn't expect to ever know true love or attraction.

But Aksel changes everything.

Aksel Cleghorn, his husband's alpha son.

Aksel is the only person in the world who makes Lucien feel like he belongs. Over the years, the connection between them grows into something more. Something they are not supposed to feel for each other. Something neither of them can control or resist.

It's wrong on so many levels.

They have to stop. But can they?

Please note: this book is set on an alien planet similar to contemporary Earth, and the characters don't have human biology [alpha/omega mating cycles, shapeshifter sex, a male with breasts, male lactation, scenting, knotting]. The book contains non-explicit references to past sexual assault and mpreg, codependency, depression, and hurt/comfort—and happily ever after, against all odds.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Present day

Aksel Cleghorn loved his mother. He did. But sometimes a man had to take a stand.

“No,” he said flatly.

Vagrippa Cleghorn frowned across the table. “But Aksel—”

“I said no,” he said in a neutral tone, setting his cup down.

She flinched, as if he’d raised his voice. It seemed his body had betrayed his anger.

Sighing inwardly, Aksel tried to rein in his scent. It wasn’t easy. As a rule, Xeus alphas weren’t good at controlling their pheromones, and he was no exception. His pheromones were abrasive and domineering even when he wasn’t trying to assert his will. It always was a nuisance when he had to deal with his mother. As a beta, she struggled to keep her composure whenever he was irritated—and he was irritated easily when this subject came up.

“Would you at least consider it?” she said after a pause. “Every omega on my list is exceptional, both in looks and personality, all from excellent families—”

“I’m not interested, Mother,” he said.

“Darling, you’re nearly twenty-seven already—”

“Royce married at thirty-six, nearly thirty-seven.”

His mother heaved an exasperated sigh. “You know your situation isn’t comparable to your brother’s. Your brother had his reasons not to take a mate, very valid reasons. And Royce isn’t a Xeus.”

Rapidly approaching the limits of his patience, Aksel shot her a hard look. “Do you actually believe the bullshit that unbonded Xeus alphas aren’t to be trusted? That we’re a threat to every omega we encounter?”

The expression on his mother’s face became tight. “Of course not, but it doesn’t matter what I believe. What matters is public perception. Have you not noticed how warily people look at you lately?”

Aksel laughed. “Lately?” His mother must have been joking.

One of his first words had been beast—probably because it was the word he’d heard most often around him as a little boy. That was what people called Xeus alphas. Beasts. Animals. Abominations. Things that shouldn’t exist anymore.

Xeus alphas didn’t have the luxury of finding out about their designation during puberty like regular alphas did. A baby Xeus was usually born with tufts of fur on their face. The fur disappeared within the first five or six years and the child looked normal enough until puberty, but the damage was already done: everyone already knew that the child was a freak. An abomination that was destined to transform into a mindless monster every full moon come puberty. Beast. Aksel had lived with that moniker his entire life. He didn’t even react to it anymore—for the most part.

But his mother had a different attitude toward his designation. She’d even tried to hide that he was a Xeus when he had been a child, attempting to shave off the fur—to no avail, since it had grown back almost immediately. Aksel had little doubt that she would have also attempted to falsify his presentation documents if she could have gotten away with it. But the telltale fur made it nearly impossible—too many people had seen him in his childhood.

“It’s been worse lately,” his mother said. “Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed how you’ve been treated in polite society this year. And to be fair, you have been... difficult.”

Aksel shrugged. “I don’t care what ‘polite society’ says about me.” Nothing polite for sure. “I’m not part of it.”

“Of course you’re part of it! You’re a Cleghorn! Your brother is the prime minister of this country!”

Aksel’s lips twisted. His mother’s ignorance was almost endearing, really. “Your posh friends barely tolerate me, Mother. I’m just a curiosity for them. Something exotic, vulgar, beastly—and on occasion, titillating.”

Vagrippa flushed. “Aksel!”

Smiling wryly, Aksel pushed his chair away from the table and got to his feet. “It’s the truth. If it weren’t, Xeus porn wouldn’t be so popular.”

“Aksel!” she spluttered. “Such topics aren’t appropriate! You are not in the army anymore.”

“Yes,” he said with a sigh, striding out of the dining room. “That’s obvious.”

He collided with another person as soon as he stepped into the corridor, the impact nearly causing the other person to fall—if Aksel hadn’t grabbed them. Him.

“Sorry,” he said gruffly, his mouth going dry.

Green eyes peered up at him from the lovely, heart-shaped face.

Lucien.

“Not your fault,” Lucien said, averting his gaze.

Aksel forced himself to drop his hands, holding his breath in order not to inhale Lucien’s intoxicating scent. The scent of a compatible omega.

The scent of his stepfather.

His mother was right about one thing: Xeus alphas weren’t good at controlling themselves around the omega they wanted. When he was around Lucien, it was hard to remember all the reasons why he couldn’t shove Lucien under him and have him.

Lucien was his father’s husband.

Granted, his father was dead, killed years ago in the war. But that didn’t make wanting Lucien any more appropriate. Any more acceptable. Lucien was pack. If his mother’s precious society friends were to find out about Aksel’s feelings for Lucien, they would be disgusted and appalled.
Crushing on a hot alpha doctor isn't in Eric Blake's plans when he goes to a clinic to fix his weird heats.

Unfortunately, it seems that won’t be easy, and Dr. Randall suggests an… experimental treatment that will also help the doctor’s research. It’s unorthodox, but it’s not personal. And no matter how good the alpha smells to him or how much Eric starts needing him, he knows Dr. Randall will never see him as an omega worthy of mating.

Disillusioned with mating after his disastrous marriage, Hugh Randall wants to prove that true mates don’t really exist. He'll never get mated again and his interest in Eric is purely professional. He'll fix him, and they'll go their separate ways.

At least, that was the plan. But along the way, the lines get blurred, and what starts as a scientific experiment turns into something else. Something very much unprofessional. Something that might ruin their lives…

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Part I

Chapter 1

“The doctor is considered one of the best in his field.”

Eric Blake hummed noncommittally, looking out the helicopter window at the cloudless sky.

“Everything will be all right,” the other omega said. “I’m sure it’s nothing serious.”

It was a nice sentiment, but Eric doubted it. He was young, not stupid. He’d done his research.

There was something wrong with him. Or at least there was something wrong with his heats. After his third abnormally strong heat, Eric could no longer deny it. Omegas like him were supposed to have very mild heats, remaining lucid and in control. Omegas like him weren’t supposed to turn into mindless animals craving an alpha knot. And yet that was exactly what had happened to Eric during his last three heats, and it had been getting progressively worse.

At this point, he had no choice but to see a doctor. And no matter how much Lucien tried to comfort him, Eric doubted it was nothing serious.

“This is a good clinic, Eric,” Lucien said as the helicopter landed. “The best in Kadar. Their service, discretion, and expertise are very highly rated. There’s no need to be nervous.”

Eric smiled faintly at the older omega. He liked Lucien. Ever since he’d moved to Kadar, Lucien had become the closest person to him in the country.

Lucien was everything an omega was supposed to be: gorgeous, gentle-mannered, well spoken, and graceful. Next to him, Eric was acutely aware of his own flaws. It wasn’t really about outward appearance: he knew that physically he looked very much like an omega, and a pretty one, with his soft features, light-brown hair, and long eyelashes framing his blue eyes. But compared to Lucien, Eric felt like a country bumpkin. Too bookish and graceless. Too socially awkward. He never knew what to say, preferring his computer and his online friends to real people.

Which is why you ended up fleeing to another country, you ninny.

Pushing the thought away, Eric said, “I’m not nervous.”

“I’ll wait for you here,” Lucien said, clearly not buying his lie.

“No,” Eric said, opening the helicopter door. “Please don’t waste your time. I’m not a child; I’m eighteen. I can find my way home.”

Home. Even after months in this country, the Cleghorns’ majestic estate still didn’t really feel like home. He missed his home. His real home.

“If you’re sure,” Lucien said, frowning a little but accepting his decision, ever so considerate.

Part of Eric wished Lucien would push and insist on staying with him. Gods, it was messed up. He was messed up. Eric was probably the only omega in existence who didn’t crave independence and freedom to do whatever he wanted. What he craved was being part of a pack, security of not having to make hard decisions by himself. He wasn’t used to this. He wasn’t used to being so alone. He’d grown up surrounded by affectionate older brothers, under the protection of his alpha mother. Over the past few months, Eric had found that being independent was very overrated.

“I’m sure,” Eric said with confidence he didn’t feel. “Thanks for the ride!” He hopped off the helicopter, shut the door, and strode toward the clinic before he could chicken out.

He didn’t like hospitals, but he wasn’t an idiot: he did need to see a doctor. The drastic change to his heat’s intensity could be caused by a number of serious health issues. The horror stories he’d read on the Internet had made him lose sleep recently. A check-up was necessary.

The interior of the clinic was fancy but tasteful, making it obvious that it catered to high-profile clientele. Eric felt a pang of worry, but unfortunately, he couldn’t risk going to a less expensive clinic. After the scandal, discretion was paramount. He could afford this appointment—his eldest brother was very generous with his allowance, but Eric wasn’t sure how many subsequent appointments he could afford without having to ask his brother for more money. And he’d rather not alert his family about his health issues. He’d been enough of a burden for them already.

“Um, hello,” Eric said, handing his ID to the receptionist. “I have an appointment.”

She smiled, after glancing at it. “Of course, Mr. Blake. Dr. Randall is waiting for you. Second floor, office 207. Please take a moment to visit office 201 for a blood test before you go to Dr. Randall—the doctor has requested it.”

Muttering his assent, Eric headed to the second floor.

After a quick blood test, he walked toward office 207. He stopped, glancing at the golden plaque on the wall.

Dr. Hugh Randall

Head of AO Sciences

He pushed the door open.

The office was fairly large and well lit without being unpleasantly bright. It was rather minimalistic, but it didn’t give the impression of cold and impersonal. It smelled of—

Of alpha.

Tensing up, Eric eyed the doctor in confusion and alarm.

“Please take a seat.”
The last time Liam Blake saw his eldest brother, Liam was five and Anthony was sixteen. Liam barely remembers him. He remembers adoring him and remembers missing him, but his childhood memories faded as he grew up.
Fifteen years later, a man who calls himself Anthony Blake finally comes home after the war ends. He has documents that prove his identity, and he has Anthony’s dark hair, blue eyes, and broad shoulders. There’s no reason to think he isn’t who he says he is—except for Liam’s strange, inexplicable attraction to the man who claims to be Anthony.
Liam refuses to believe he’s that sick: related alphas and omegas can’t be drawn to each other or get fixated on their sibling’s scent. It’s unnatural. It’s perverse.
Could that man be an impostor?
But if he is, who is he—and why is he pretending to be Anthony Blake?

Liam Blake stared at the man, wondering if he was hearing things.

“What?” Eric and Jules said together, voicing his confusion.

Peter Cerrigan, their family solicitor, smiled at the three Blake brothers, his smile kind and understanding. “Your eldest brother, Anthony Blake, is not dead. We’ve received word that he’s alive. It seems he was heavily wounded and it took him a long time to recover, which was why he was mistakenly declared dead. He’ll return home any day now.”

Liam sat down heavily on the couch, feeling… he didn’t know what. Happiness didn’t seem to be the right word. He hadn’t seen his eldest brother in fifteen years. He had been just five when Anthony had left to join the war after a huge row with their alpha mother. He’d been gone ever since. He’d never contacted them, not even once. Liam hadn’t understood why when he had been a child, but as an adult, he could understand that their mother’s overbearingness might have been the reason. Alphas preferred independence and had trouble getting along with other alphas even when they were related. Their mother had been kind of… stifling, to be honest.

Except their mother had died last year, but Anthony had still failed to return home and assume his responsibilities. Liam couldn’t deny that he had resented that—resented Anthony—for not giving a damn about them. But when a few months ago they’d received word that Anthony was presumably killed in one of the last battles of the war, all his resentment was gone, and there was only the ever-growing desperation: with their mother and eldest brother dead, their home was no longer their home. The Blake properties were entailed to alphas, so their mother’s younger brother, Uncle Wayne, inherited everything, leaving Liam and his younger brothers completely dependent on his kindness. And Liam would rather not depend on that—Uncle Wayne wasn’t a kind man.

“He’s really alive?” Jules said, gripping Liam’s arm in his excitement.

The old solicitor nodded. “He is. We were told the viscount will return home as soon as he passes the identity verification in the Inheritance Department.” He winced. “Could you boys inform your uncle that the Blake accounts will be frozen until your brother’s return?”

Liam nodded, though he wasn’t looking forward to delivering that piece of news to their uncle. Uncle Wayne wasn’t going to be happy. Putting it mildly.

“Sure we will,” Jules said, smirking.

Liam shook his head in fond exasperation. Unlike his younger brother, he didn’t relish conflict. He’d learned a long time ago that it was more effective not to contradict alphas openly—and then subtly make them change their opinions. Liam found that strategy far more efficient than pointless confrontation. Alphas hated being wrong, hated being humiliated and mocked. People were correct to say that one would catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

When the solicitor left, Liam laid a hand on Jules’s shoulder. “Don’t antagonize Uncle, Jules.”

Jules blinked and gave him a very innocent look, as if to say, Who, me?

Liam chuckled. “I’m serious, you dolt. Until Anthony returns, Uncle Wayne is still our family alpha and he can create plenty of problems for us. You aren’t married to Westcliff yet.”

As always, Jules’s expression turned nauseatingly soft and lovesick at the mere mention of his fiancé.

Liam smiled faintly. He had to admit he had felt more than a little humiliated when the Duke of Westcliff had publicly declared his intention to marry Jules even though he’d been courting him, Liam. It had stung. It had. But he loved his brothers and he was happy for Jules—he’d never seen Jules so happy.

But truth be told, sometimes he felt a pang of wistfulness and envy when he saw Jules so happy and in love. He’d like that. He’d like to fall in love and marry for love. But after the past social season, his hopes were at an all-time low. He’d met thousands of perfectly eligible alphas, many of whom were handsome, titled, and rich—and yet Liam had felt nothing. Not even a flicker of attraction. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was something wrong with him. It was possible. He wasn’t on suppressants, but his heats were very weak, which was pretty unusual even for Vos omegas.

Maybe he was just defective.

Liam tried to push the dreaded thought away, but once again, it kept coming back. Defective omegas were very rare, but sometimes it happened. They were spoken about only in whispers, their existence denied by their families. They were considered abominations. Defective omegas were neither fertile nor nurturing nor passionate—things omegas were known for. Liam couldn’t be sure whether he was fertile or not, though his very weak heats were worrying, but he was definitely bad at being nurturing and passionate. He always felt awkward when he had to comfort his little brothers, always felt awkward when he hugged them, as if giving comfort was something unnatural for him. As for passionate… well, after the past social season, he had no delusions about that, either. There was something wrong with him. He wasn’t like other omegas.
Sometimes kissing the Beast doesn't turn it into a Prince Charming—instead, he's a charming prince you want to punch...
Jules is an ordinary nineteen-year-old omega from a perfectly respectable family. He’s not the most beautiful, or the smartest, or the strongest of the four Blake siblings. And he’s fine with it, really. He isn’t ugly or anything, but by omega standards, he’s nothing special. “Nothing special” describes Jules’s whole life. It’s utterly boring.
So when strange things start happening in their house, it piques Jules’s curiosity. There’s a beast in the Blake family mansion; Jules is sure of it. He sometimes hears growls and screams coming from the basement, and the men guarding the door look positively terrified.
What could terrify grown alphas? Jules will have to investigate!
But his investigation comes with surprises...like the Beast's overwhelming effect on Jules's omega nature. It doesn't mean anything. Of course it doesn't. Jules is just curious; that's all.
Curiosity can change a life, but when you're attracted to a feral alpha whose real face you haven’t even seen...will it change for the better? What if the Beast is no Prince Charming but a cold-hearted, cynical bastard? A bastard Jules shouldn't want—but does. A bastard Jules should stay away from—but can't.

This novel is a steamy alpha/omega enemies-to-lovers MM romance with a happily ever after. While mpreg exists in this world, it is only mentioned and does not appear on-page. This book can be read on its own or as part of the series The Wrong Alpha.

Jules Blake had learned about it completely by accident. He had been looking for his kitten Sheba, and after fruitlessly searching the entire house, Jules had decided to check out the basement no one ever used. His hopes hadn’t been high—the basement was so cold, dark, and damp that even his not-very-bright kitten should have been smarter than to go there—but when Jules got downstairs, he was surprised to find security guards at the door. Armed security guards.

There were suspicious noises coming from behind the door. Growls? Had someone just screamed? The guards’ eyes were wary and troubled, their hands close to their holsters. It was beyond strange, considering that the basement door was massive. Nothing should be able to break through that door. Why were the guards so twitchy, then?

“What’s going on?” Jules asked, taking a step closer.

The guards blocked his way.

“Stay away from the basement, kid,” one of them said. “Your uncle’s orders.”

“Not a kid,” Jules said, scowling—he was nineteen; an adult!—but of course the guard didn’t take him seriously.

“Shoo,” he said, giving him an amused smile before turning away, silently dismissing him.

That was the thing: no one ever took Jules seriously. For that matter, no one had ever paid him much attention. He just wasn’t remarkable in any way. He wasn’t the eldest and strongest child: that was his half-brother Anthony. He wasn’t the youngest or the smartest: that was the seventeen-year-old Eric. He wasn’t the beautiful one: that would be Liam, with his gorgeous golden hair and golden-brown eyes.

He was just Jules: the ordinary, boring Julian Blake. The unremarkable child. The one people barely looked at before shifting their eyes to his brothers. It wasn’t that he was ugly or anything. He was just… mundane compared to his siblings. Nothing special. His brown eyes and brown hair were not terrible, Jules supposed, and his skin was nice, but that was it. He was hardly the type of omega who turned people’s heads when he walked down the street.

It was fine. Jules was perfectly content being the plain one, even if he sometimes felt like a piece of furniture when Liam was in the room. It was okay. It wasn’t Liam’s fault that he was so gorgeous. Besides, pretty much everyone looked like furniture when Liam was around; Jules wasn’t special in that regard.

Anyway. The point was, he was the Blake sibling people always remembered as an afterthought. Jules was pretty sure the security guard had already forgotten that he’d just seen him.

Jules scowled at the man’s wide back before staring at the basement door, his curiosity piqued.

He really, really wanted to know what they were guarding. Just one little peek. Surely there was no harm in it?

All right, maybe there would be some harm in it—if his uncle found out, his reaction wouldn’t be pretty. Wayne Blake was anything but lenient. If Uncle Wayne wanted them to stay away from the basement, being his nephew wouldn’t save Jules from punishment.

Unless he didn’t get caught.

***

It had taken Jules days of careful observation before he learned when the guards changed shifts. The guards always seemed more lax and easily distracted when their shift neared its end. He’d also learned that the basement locked from the outside and, to Jules’s relief, thanks to the lock type, it wouldn’t be noticeable when the door wasn’t locked.

After some strategic maneuvering, which might or might not have involved bribing Liam to bat his eyelashes at the guards and request their help (Liam’s pretty face could be so useful sometimes), Jules sneaked into the basement, his heart beating wildly with excitement, nerves, and anxiety.

He had half-expected the basement to be dark and creepy, with some dangerous beast locked up in a cage or something.

But the basement wasn’t dark.

It was fully illuminated. In fact, it seemed to have been transformed into… some kind of lab?

Jules looked around with a frown, utterly confused. His uncle was a businessman, not a scientist of any kind.

Slowly, he moved deeper into the large room, looking around warily. But there was no beast anywhere. He didn’t understand. Then what had been making such a ruckus? Was that not—

Something growled, and Jules came to an abrupt halt, his head whipping toward the sound.

He stared.

There was a naked man strapped down to a metal table.

That was his first impression. It was a wrong one. Because it was no man. It was a Xeus alpha. A Xeus alpha in shifted form.

Moistening his dry lips with his tongue, Jules walked closer, curious despite himself. He’d never seen a shifted Xeus. Heck, he’d never really been allowed to go anywhere near Xeus alphas, period. Filth, Uncle Wayne had called them. Abominations. Omegas from good families like ours stay away from those animals.

Jules had never had a reason to doubt his uncle’s words. He’d never spoken to a Xeus in the nineteen years of his life, so his uncle was surely more informed than him on the subject—Jules had never even left the family estate. His mother had been old-fashioned that way: unmated omegas were not to leave their childhood homes until they were presented to high society. Jules had been supposed to be presented last year, but then his mother died and…
A planet at war. Two alphas forced into a political marriage. Attraction that defies all reason and logic… Or does it?
The Kingdom of Pelugia and the Republic of Kadar have been at war for decades. Peace isn’t popular, but the planet can’t survive without it.
Forced to marry an enemy prince for the sake of peace, Senator Royce Cleghorn doesn’t like his husband, his alpha scent, or his damned pretty blue eyes. More than anything, Royce hates what Haydn makes him become: a primitive alpha cliché who’ll do anything to mark his territory, even if that territory is his alpha husband. Royce likes omegas; he isn’t into alphas, no matter how pretty their eyes are. It’s just a weird territorial instinct. It has to be.
Prince Haydn has always tried to be the perfect alpha his father wants him to be. He's the heir to the throne. He's a war general. He isn't supposed to bare his throat to an enemy alpha—and it isn't supposed to feel so good. Everyone knows a marriage between two alphas is a recipe for disaster. He isn't supposed to crave his husband—their marriage is just a political arrangement, nothing more.
But when disaster strikes and loyalties are tested, which bond will be the strongest: their marriage, or their allegiances?

Haydn was soaked by the time he returned to the palace, and he was thinking longingly of a hot shower when the butler intercepted him and informed him that the king wanted to see him.

“Where is he, Dylas?” Haydn said with a sigh, wincing at the puddle growing under his feet.

“In his study, Your Highness.”

Haydn looked down at his filthy boots and equally filthy military uniform. Leading his troops in vigorous physical training had made him as tired, cold, and dirty as the soldiers under his command, and he wasn’t exactly in the mood for his father’s shit. “I’ll see him after taking a shower. I stink.”

Dylas shook his head. “His Majesty said you must go to him immediately after your return.” His tone was apologetic but uncompromising. The old butler wasn’t going to budge. This must have been important.

Frowning, Haydn headed toward his father’s study.

He knocked once before entering.

“Your Majesty,” he said respectfully, but not too respectfully. It was always a balancing act. If he was too respectful, his father started thinking he wasn’t alpha enough. If he was too disrespectful, his father bristled, immediately suspicious that Haydn wanted to usurp his throne. It was beyond annoying. Not for the first time in his life, Haydn wished he had been born a beta.

Or an omega.

He pushed the thought away. Such thoughts were pointless. And ridiculous. He was an alpha. Alphas had it easy, compared to betas and especially omegas. Well, Xeus alphas had it worse than either betas or omegas, but Haydn wasn’t one, so he had nothing to complain about.

King Stefan lifted his gaze from his computer, his dark gold brows furrowing slightly. “You’re finally back.”

“You wanted to see me, Father?” Haydn said, straightening himself to his full height, which may not have been as impressive as the king’s but certainly made him taller than most people.

Except it wasn’t most people he was usually compared to—and found lacking. Haydn couldn’t help but think that in his father’s eyes, he would always be the smaller, blonder version of his dead brother. The other son. Not quite as good as his first one.

“Sit,” King Stefan said shortly.

Haydn did as he was told.

The king regarded him from across the desk. “I had a meeting with the Galactic Council representative this morning. You were aware of it, I presume?”

Haydn just nodded. It would have been difficult for him to be ignorant of it when the entire palace had been preparing for that visit for days.

Judging by the king’s scowl, the meeting hadn’t gone as well as he had hoped.

“The Galactic Council isn’t pleased with us,” Stefan said. “They don’t think our planet deserves to be part of the Union of Planets until our ‘barbaric civil war’ is over.”

“Civil war?” Haydn said, his brows drawing close. “There is no civil war in our kingdom.”

“Civil war on our planet,” the king said. “For the Galactic Council, Eila is one entity, and they don’t care that we’ve had two different countries with different governments for thousands of years. They want us to make peace with Kadar and choose one Lord Chancellor to represent our planet. They don’t want two.”

Haydn stared at him in amazement. “You can’t be seriously considering it.” Pelugia and the Republic of Kadar had been at war all his life; he literally couldn’t imagine them not being at war. Not that Haydn wouldn’t welcome an end to this war. Of course he would welcome it. He was tired of leading his men to their deaths, over and over and over. He had lost two thousand men just this past month. Two thousand and thirty-one.

So no, Haydn would be fucking delighted if the war finally ended. He just didn’t believe it was achievable. There were too many grievances on both sides.

Stefan grimaced. “We have little choice. If we don’t do as they say, the Galactic Council will revoke our membership in the Union of Planets, and we’ll lose access to the TNIT network, and most importantly, lose the protection we have as a member of the Union. We will be fair game for any filthy pirate coalition out there.”

Haydn leaned back in his chair, frowning. “The Galactic Council can’t do that, can they? It’s not like Eila is the only planet in the Union that doesn’t have a unified government. There are some very powerful Inner Core planets that have multiple kingdoms or republics: Vergx or Calluvia, for example.”

The king sighed. “We aren’t Vergx or Calluvia, Haydn. By galactic standards, we’re small fish. We don’t have those planets’ political and economic power that allows them to be exceptions to the rule. Besides, those planets still have some kind of unified government—and one Lord Chancellor. We can’t say the same about us. So the Council is giving us an ultimatum: make peace with Kadar and choose one Lord Chancellor within the next few months, or they’re kicking us out of the Union.”
