The Seaside Chronicles
January 3, 2023

On the Hook

Seasiders,

News on the beach is Braxton Bradley has caught the eye of Seaside’s very own darling, Harlee Tilson. Now, this might come as a shock to many of you, since the eldest Bradley sibling has been rumored to have made a vow to never marry. After all, his fishing charter has always been his number one love.

A little crab might have informed me that Braxton and Harlee were seen in a rather…intimate embrace only two nights ago on the Seaside Pier! The scandal of it all since Harlee is fresh off a breakup with Thomas Minor…who happens to be Braxton’s BFF! Did I mention scandal?

Could it be true? Could Braxton and Harlee be an item? One has to wonder what poor Thomas must think of this new development.

Stay tuned, my fishes…more to come!

Fair winds and following seas!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Braxton (Brax)

Twenty-Five Years Old

I could tell the exact moment she walked into the bar without even seeing her. There was something special about Harlee Tilson, though I could never put my finger on what exactly it was.

Turning, I caught sight of her and smiled. Harlee was my sister Addie’s best friend. I’d like to say she was basically another sister to me, but that would be fucked up since I’d had a dirty dream or two about her over the years. Hell, I wasn’t blind, and the older she got, the more beautiful she became. I’d even had a major crush on her in high school and had only ended up dating one other person because my thoughts were always on Harlee. But she was off limits. The whole never date…or fuck…your sister’s best friend rule. I wasn’t really sure who’d made up that stupid rule anyway.

“Is that Harlee Tilson?” Thomas Minor asked as he stared at her. He was my best friend and like a brother to me. “Damn, that girl gets hotter and hotter every time I see her.”

I glared at my friend. Never mind that I couldn’t touch Harlee, that asshole sure as hell wasn’t going to even think about touching her. “Keep your eyes and your hands off, Thomas.”

He swung his gaze over to me. “Don’t tell me you’re interested in her?”

I laughed. “She’s like a sister to me, dude.”

Okay, half-truth. I don’t have sex dreams about my sisters.

I shuddered at the thought.

Of course, up until my senior year of high school, I had always thought of Harlee as a kid sister. Then she grew up, got breasts, and her body developed curves that even a priest would look at twice, and the whole kid-sister thing was thrown out the door. But that didn’t mean I had free rein to act on it. The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt her. She meant a lot to Addie, to my whole family. She was an only child, and her father owned our local newspaper, The Seaside Chronicles. I was pretty sure she spent more time at our house than she did her own. That meant no matter how much I wanted to know what those pouty lips would feel like pressed to mine, it was best I kept my distance.

And if Harlee was off limits to me, she was off limits to all of my friends.

I watched as douchebag Roger walked up to Harlee and smiled at her like she was a piece of meat. He worked down at the docks and was nothing but a player, out for one thing and one thing only: sex. He held out his hand and she took it, allowing him to guide her to the dance floor.

Thomas grunted. “Well, looks like I’m too late anyway. Roger seems to have claimed her.”

A muscle in my neck throbbed as I watched him put his hands on Harlee. It wasn’t jealousy, no…no way it was that. It was the fact that he was a scumbag. There was no way in hell I was going to let him fondle her on the dance floor.

With my fists clenched and an anger that came out of fucking nowhere, I marched over to where Harlee and Roger were dancing and gave him a look that said, “Get away from her or I’ll break your neck.” Everyone in town knew Harlee and Addie were like sisters, and if anyone tried to mess with my sisters or Harlee, they’d have to deal with me.

Roger lifted his hands and took a few steps back. “Dude, it was only a dance.”

“Go find someone else to dance with,” I growled as I stepped between him and Harlee. When I turned and looked down at her, those steely blue eyes were staring up at me, wide with confusion.

“Why did you do that, Brax?”

I couldn’t help but stare down at her, take her in. Her shoulder-length, wavy hair was pulled up into a ponytail. She was wearing jeans and a light blue shirt that seemed to nip in at her waist, showcasing her luscious curves.
Keepin’ it Reel
Seasiders,
We all know the youngest Bradley sibling must be the most carefree of the bunch. Last this writer heard, Palmer was employed with at least five different jobs. Pet walker, house sitter, vet receptionist, nanny, and the least of my favorite, pooper scooper. To each her own, I guess.

Word on the docks is Palmer has caught the eye of our latest new Seaside resident and single dad, Mason Bryan. Oh, his little boy, Charlie, is just the sweetest thing. A little seagull has planted in my ear that Palmer will be Charlie’s new nanny…don’t worry, Seasiders, I’ve got my ear to the ground and will keep you updated on this latest development.
Fair winds and following seas!

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Palmer

October 31

A nanny.

What in the hell was my sister Addie thinking when she volunteered me for a position as a nanny? For starters, I’d never babysat once in my entire life. The closest I’d come to babysitting was looking after the dogs I walked for a living. Well, that was one of my jobs, anyway. Let’s just say I was more comfortable with animals than small children.

Anyone who knew me knew I’d make a terrible nanny. I’m too free-spirited. I’d let the kid get away with everything, for goodness’ sake. Not to mention I’d have no idea what to do with them. At least with a dog I knew how to entertain them. But a child… the thought made my entire body quake.

“A nanny,” I mumbled as I watched my sister Addie walk down the aisle toward her high school sweetheart, Gannon. They were finally getting married after life had kept them apart for far too long.

I smiled as I watched my father place Addie’s hand in Gannon’s. It was a small wedding, and the best part about it was that it was taking place on Halloween. The rainy weather had caused the wedding to be moved from outside to inside, but everything was so beautiful and my sister had never looked happier. In the end, that was all that mattered.

Drawing in a deep breath to keep from crying, I looked past the happy couple and my eyes caught sight of the father who had recently been occupying my thoughts.

Mason Bryan.

Father to Charlie, who was five years old and had started kindergarten in Seaside after they’d moved here from Boston. He was probably the cutest kid I’d ever met—not that I had met a ton of kids in my twenty-seven years. Mason was the new doctor in Seaside, and with his good looks, he’d become pretty popular among the sick and the not-so-sick.

Did I mention the man was hot as hell? Even the local gossip column had written about him a few times already. And according to Addie—who worked as Mason’s office manager and helped out with patients since she was also a nurse—the rise in female patients had been hitting record numbers. Apparently, there were several women in Seaside who had suddenly become sick after Mason took over the practice from Dr. James, our town’s previous doctor for as long as I could remember.

“Stop staring at the hot doctor,” my sister Sutton whispered next to me.

I shot her a dirty look. “I’m not!” I hissed.

She raised her brows and gave me a questioning smirk.

“I wasn’t staring!” I whisper-shouted. That caused Addie, Gannon, and the preacher to turn and look at me. My cheeks instantly heated, and I gave them all a quick smile while mouthing sorry.

Once the wedding ceremony was over and an endless number of pictures had been taken, we all made our way to the reception room, where the party really began. It warmed my heart to see my two sisters, Addie and Sutton, so happy and in love. A small part of me was jealous, but I’d come to realize that the word love and I were not kindred spirits. I’d had one too many bad relationships to even consider getting involved with anyone again. At least not anytime soon.

My mind traveled back to Mason, aka the hot doctor, with his dark blond hair and hazel eyes. I quickly pushed that thought away.

After a few hours of playing the dutiful bridesmaid, I found a chair and sat down to rest my aching feet and watch everyone enjoying themselves. My sister Sutton was dancing with Brody, her husband of only a month or so. I couldn’t help but smile as Brody dipped her and she let out a laugh. My eyes drifted to the right, and I caught sight of Addie and Gannon in a sweet embrace on the dance floor.

Nope. Not jealous at all. Not one bit.

Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Brody and Gannon were brothers, so it was kind of sweet they’d married two sisters.

Sighing, I lifted my wine glass and took a sip while I scanned the room. Suddenly, a little boy with the bluest eyes appeared in front of me.
Now, I can neither confirm nor deny that it is sexy lingerie, but seeing as Ms. Bradley has been seen on more than one occasion in the company of Brody Wilson, who, let me remind you, was voted as the catch of the season. One can only come to a certain conclusion and that is…
Love is in the air.
I, for one, would love to see Sutton move on from that terrible first marriage of hers, and in my humble opinion, Mr. Brody Wilson would do a fine job of making her forget all about…what’s his name.
Next on my list of to do’s for today…stop by Coastal Chic! Stay tuned for more on Lingerie Gate!

End of Senior Year

I’d always heard that when you meet your soul mate, the one you were meant to spend the rest of your life with, you would feel it in the very depths of your soul. That your two hearts were forged in the same fire. I never felt that with Jack Larson, my now ex-boyfriend. I cared about him, but when his eyes met mine across a room or he smiled at me, something was…missing. Jack had a way of making me feel like I was the lucky one to be with him. It wasn’t a partnership. He was quick to point out my faults, and then fast to explain that he didn’t mean to hurt my feelings. It was clear that he would never change. It would always be his needs above anyone else’s. That wasn’t a soul mate.

My older sister, Adelaide—whom everyone called Addie—and her ex-boyfriend, Gannon Wilson, were soul mates. Everyone could see that. Jack and I…were far from it.

And here I sat, alone on a beach, after Jack had informed me that he wanted to call things off. We were both on our way to college, and he felt like he needed to explore other…options was the word he’d used. I should have been sad, but I wasn’t. Once again, he’d been cruel with his words, like always.

He’d actually wanted to have sex only minutes before, even with everyone gathered around the dune at the bonfire. Everyone. Including my sister, Addie, and Gannon—who was home on leave from the Navy, along with his older brother, Brody. There was no way I was doing that with Jack. Plus, I wasn’t ready. At least, I wasn’t ready to take that step with him.

I heard someone walking toward me, and I quickly wiped my face.

“He’s not worth a single tear, Sutton.”

Looking up, I saw Brody standing there. He smiled, and my stomach flipped while my chest fluttered. When his eyes met mine, my heartbeat picked up. The way he made me feel was like nothing I’d ever experienced with Jack. Not one single time. What did that say about me and Jack?

I was the first to admit that I’d had a crush on Brody for as long as I could remember. But when I saw him show up with Gannon tonight—with his nearly black hair shaved in a military buzz cut, and his body more muscular and hardened—my entire insides felt like they melted on the spot. I knew Jack had seen my reaction, and it was the reason he’d pulled me aside and tried to pull the whole “we need to sleep together before we leave for college” stunt. I also knew in my heart that sleeping with Jack wasn’t what I wanted, and if there was one thing I could control in our relationship, it was if and when I gave him my entire self.

I cleared my throat and looked up at Brody. “I’m not crying over him. Only the words he spit out.”

Jack had said that I wasn’t worth the wait and that we were over. His words weren’t said in anger, really, but from somewhere deep inside of him. It had hurt only because a part of me knew it was a sign that he’d always known, like I did, that we were never really in love.

It was hard to love someone when you’d already given your heart to another man, regardless if that man realized it or not.

Brody sat down and handed me the beer he’d been drinking. I took a sip and handed it back, then rested my head on his shoulder. He was four years older than me and had joined the Navy right after he’d graduated from high school. I remembered sitting in my room and crying for hours because he was gone. I would no longer be able to see that crooked smile of his or the dimple in his cheek. Or those beautiful hazel eyes with the gold flecks sprinkled in as if they were a gift from above.
The Seaside Chronicle
Buzz Bait
Seasiders,
News on the docks is Adelaide Bradley is back in Seaside, and rumor has it she’s here to stay! (No ring was spotted on her finger, I might add!) After eight long years of living in the big city and working for Massachusetts General, she has decided to return to the shores. One can only imagine how thrilled Barbara and Keegan are to have their oldest daughter back.
But it makes you wonder if Adelaide will continue to peruse her nursing career or is she here to help at her family’s restaurant, The Seaside Grill.
A little seagull has planted in my ear that Gannon Wilson is taking the news rather well, considering Adelaide broke his heart all those years ago. I did notice Gannon has been working more than usual, piloting that precious cargo through our ship channel. Maybe he is picking up extra hours to purchase a piece of jewelry, considering he was seen in Reef Jewelers only days ago.
We’re rooting for the two of them to reunite at least as friends. Everyone knows the former homecoming king and queen had a bright future ahead of them until…well…that’s another story for another issue, Seasiders!

End of Senior Year of High School

Gannon Wilson had to be the most handsome man in all of Seaside. His ash-brown hair and those deep brown eyes reminded me of my grandma’s famous hot chocolate. Nothing ever made me feel more warm and happy than her hot chocolate. Okay, that was a lie, because Gannon’s eyes made me feel the same way. When he looked at me, I could almost see into his soul. And when he smiled—oh Lord, it did crazy things to my stomach.

I was standing back by the edge of the parking lot, watching as Gannon said his goodbyes to his friends. Gannon knew everyone. He was that kind of guy. Never mind that he was the quarterback for our high school’s football team, or that he played baseball—he was simply kind to everyone he met. Popular, not popular, bookworm, or jock, he was friends with all of them. It was one of the things I loved most about him: his kind heart.

My younger sister, Sutton, and my best friend, Harlee, walked up and put their arms around me. With a sigh, Sutton said, “I still can’t believe he’s leaving today.”

I forced a smile, but no words would come. I had been dreading this day for the last couple of months, counting down until Gannon left to go to the Naval Academy.

“Have you guys made a decision on what you’re going to do?” Harlee asked.

A part of me didn’t want to share our plans. I wanted to be left alone with Gannon so we could enjoy every single moment until he had to leave. And I knew the moment I spoke it out loud, it would make it true.

“As much as we want to stay together, I don’t see how we can do it. I mean, I’m going to school in Orono, and Gannon is heading to the Naval Academy in Maryland. And after that, he’s going into the Navy. It’s not fair for either of us to have to do a long-distance relationship like that with no end in sight.”

“But, it’s you guys. Gannon and Adelaide. You were meant to be together,” Sutton said as she turned to look at me. Her eyes were so sad, and I was positive mine reflected the same emotion back. I forced myself not to cry.

“Trust me, Sutton, I don’t like it any more than you do. But we both have dreams of our own. I want to become a labor and delivery nurse and live in Boston. Gannon wants to go to school for marine engineering. He wants to be on ships in the Navy and then come back to Seaside and work as a boat pilot. That’s his ultimate goal, and he can’t make it happen unless he follows this path. Plus, his daddy was in the Navy, and he wants to follow in his footsteps along with Brody. It’s not fair for either of us to give up our own dream.”

Harlee and Sutton both let out the saddest sighs. I wanted to do the same.

“Tell me about it,” I said softly. I watched Gannon shake hands with one of the guys from the football team, then start to make his way toward us.

“We have to leave it up to fate.” I smiled at Gannon as he approached.

Harlee took my hand in hers and gave it a squeeze. “Well, if it’s meant to be, then maybe someday you’ll both end up back here in Seaside together.”

Sutton huffed. “Always the optimist, aren’t you, Harlee?”

She smiled. “I am, because I don’t believe that a love like the one Addie and Gannon share can be extinguished so easily.”

I gave her hand a light squeeze back. “I love you, Harlee.”

“Love you back.” Turning to Sutton, Harlee said, “How about we head on over to the Seaside Grill for a chocolate shake?”

Sutton faced me. “You’ll be okay if we leave?”

Hugging my sister, I replied, “Yes, I’ll be fine. Tell Mom and Dad I’ll be home later.”

“I will.”

My parents owned the Seaside Grill, one of the more popular restaurants in Seaside, right at the end of Seaside Drive. One whole side of the restaurant was made of windows that faced out toward Penobscot Bay. There was also a back deck with tables for those who wanted to enjoy the ocean breeze that came in off the water during the warmer months.

Gannon stopped in front of us and leaned down, kissing me on the cheek.

Sutton quickly wiped a tear away. “We’ll miss you. Have fun, Gannon. And please be careful.”

Gannon flashed Sutton a smile. “I will, Sutton. Have fun your junior and senior year. And whatever you do, if you get Mr. Hathaway, don’t ever fall asleep in his classroom.”

With a giggle, Sutton threw herself at Gannon and hugged him. He wrapped her up and looked at me with a soft smile.
