Nothing is more important than winning the hockey championship cup.
Or, so I thought.
I purchased the San Antonio Hyenas when they were the worst team in the league.
Now, we're playing for the cup. We're playing for it all.
It's all I've ever wanted.
Until I met her.
Seeing her for the first time was like a bolt of lightning striking my heart.
She was perfect. She was everything.
She was the rival owner of the Cincinnati Vipers, the team we're facing in the finals.
She's the one woman I should stay away from.
The one woman who should be off limits.
But I can't help myself.
I can't stop myself.
But she's as ruthless as I am.
Is this really love, or a sinister mind trick to throw me off my game?
I guess I'll find out because I can't stay away from her no matter how hard I try.
Game on.

The thrilling conclusion to The San Antonio Hyenas series featuring hockey's hottest silver fox owner, Brantley VanMorgan. This is book six and although books 1-5 can be read as standalones, this one is best read after reading the others.

Safe insta-love at its finest with no cheating and a super sweet HEA always guaranteed.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

Brantley

“Are you nervous?” my assistant Zara asks as the referee skates out with the puck.

“Have you ever seen me nervous?” I reply, watching the ice while my heart beats steadily.

“No, I have not,” Zara says with a nervous chuckle. “I, on the other hand, am freaking out.”

She starts pacing around the owner’s box as the game gets underway.

My hockey team, The San Antonio Hyenas, are about to begin game seven of the conference final. If we win, the boys will be battling for the Stoney Cup next week where the chance at greatness awaits. If we lose, the boys will be in their favorite vacation destinations with nothing but regret and disappointment waiting for them. I’m rooting for the former.

The referee drops the puck and our star center, Sebastian Kemp, explodes into action. He passes the puck back to the veteran Harris Sutton who brings it out.

“I can’t watch,” Zara says as she sits down next to me for a split second before popping back up and pacing around the private box.

Her girlfriend is a seat over. She leans over to me with an apologetic smile. “Sorry about her, she just really wants to win.”

“We’re aligned in that regard,” I say as I watch The Halifax Icebreakers steal the puck.

It’s been a season full of ups and downs. Everyone thought I was crazy when I purchased the worst team in the league.

They wondered what I was doing and why I would put myself through so much torture. Some of my billionaire friends laughed and asked why I was wasting my time with a rubbish hockey team when there were bigger fish waiting to be caught in the business world.

How could I tell them that it wasn’t about money? They wouldn’t understand the notion.

I’ve been there and done that when it comes to business. I started a mining company from scratch and sold it for 1.3 billion dollars. That was before I turned thirty. From there, I leveraged my contacts, capital, and knowledge into a start-up that launched satellites into space. That company sold for four billion. From there, I took my fortune and joined the angel investor world where I hit a few jackpots. Today, I’m worth somewhere north of twenty-six billion dollars. But who’s counting? Once you hit five billion, any additional dollar doesn’t really matter. It just seems excessive.

The crowd cheers as our future hall of fame goalie, Nolan Barlowe, makes a stop. The referee blows the whistle and the players ease up.

The young pretty waitress comes over now that the game has stopped. “Can I get you a drink, Mr. VanMorgan?”

“I’m fine, thank you.” I never drink at work.

She leans down and I get a noseful of her candy-scented perfume. I turn to her and accidentally get an eyeful of hard cleavage before looking up into her eyes. “Yes?”

“I was wondering if you would like anything else?” she asks in a seductive tone. “Anything at all?”

“Hey!” Zara says with a snap of her fingers. “Beat it, Barbie.”

The waitress rolls her eyes at Zara who’s glaring at her with her hands on her hips and leaves, thankfully.

“Once again,” I say to my assistant as she plops down into the empty seat beside me, “you have proven yourself to be worth every penny of your massive salary.”

“Speaking of that,” Zara says as she takes a sip of her soda, “if the Hyenas win the Stoney Cup, I want a raise.”

I grin as the game starts back up. “You got it.”

Zara is a dream employee. She helped me build the team to what it is today and she offers all sorts of other perks, like keeping these money-hungry women away from me.
I met her.
The girl of my dreams.
She's perfect for me in every way.
There's only one thing wrong.
She's the one girl I'm forbidden to have.
The coach's daughter.
His little princess.
He's made it very clear. Grace is off-limits.
But she's the only one I want.
The only one I've ever wanted.
I'm the best goalie in the league.
I can stop anything.
But I can't stop myself from falling for Grace.
I don't care what her dad has to say about it.
His little princess is now mine.

Nothing tastes better than forbidden fruit. But with so much on the line, will Nolan take a bite?

Book Five in The San Antonio Hyenas series featuring hockey's best goalie and the girl who steals his heart. Insta-love at its finest with no cheating and a super sweet HEA always guaranteed. Safe. Double V-Cards. Can be read as a standalone.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

Nolan

Most people think a hockey goalie isn’t a physical position. They think that since we’re not getting slammed into the boards or dropping gloves every two minutes to fight that we’re not as physical as the other players. Those people are idiots.

Goalies have the most physical position in the sport.

Cadogan, a huge fucker on the other team who probably should be on a football field instead of an ice rink, comes sliding toward me on his chest. The prick is trying to take out my ankles. I dive over him and land on my shoulder with a grunt.

The ref blows his whistle as Cadogan smashes through my net, taking it off the pegs. He crashes into the boards behind me as McKinstry comes storming over to make him pay for the cheap shot.

“You okay, Spiderman?” Sebastian asks with a grin as he grabs my arm and pulls me up.

I glance up at the jumbotron and grin when I see the replay. I got some good height on that one. “All good, buddy.”

Players are always looking for an opportunity to slam into goalies. We’re target number one out here.

But it’s not just the occasional human wrecking ball that goalies have to contend with. We’re on the ice for the entire game. No bench breaks for us. We have to maintain a high level of focus and physical readiness for the full sixty minutes, plus overtime if need be.

We must have the fastest reflexes out here. Diving saves, acrobatic stops—all with the added weight of our gear and while balancing on skates.

There’s a scuffle behind me and McKinstry gets thrown into the penalty box. I love the guy and I appreciate the support, but if he really wants to support me, he can stay on the damn ice for once. My job is infinitely harder when we’re down one player.

The net gets reattached and the game resumes.

We’re playing the Indianapolis Grizzlies tonight. It’s the last game of the season. We’re already in the playoffs, but we want to finish strong by winning the season out.

The Grizzlies get the puck back into our zone and I glance up at the clock.

A minute and a half left to play. We’re up by one. It’s 4 - 3.

Time to focus.

They have an extra player thanks to McKinstry sitting in the damn penalty box, so they’re controlling the play. My eyes are locked on the puck as they pass it back and forth.

That behemoth, Cadogan, returns and stands in front of me, blocking my view. He’s trying to get me to lose sight of the puck. It’s only going to take a split second of confusion for one of those guys to slip the puck under my pads or between my legs.

Not going to happen.

I push Cadogan in the back. He’s so goddamn big that he barely moves. I still can’t see shit. I push him harder and he stumbles forward, giving me some space.

I lose sight of the puck for a second and that’s all it takes. The puck comes flying toward the tiny spot of open net under my elbow. I yank my arm down and that satisfying thud fills my ears as I stop it.

My acrobatics isn’t the only reason why Sebastian calls me Spiderman. I have a spidey sense for the puck. I can feel it around me. I seem to know where it is even when I don’t know where it is. It’s from a lifetime of practice, I guess. That muscle memory runs deep in my bones.

The puck lands on the ice and I dive on it as Cadogan tries to get his stick there first. I cover it up, so that big prick gives me a couple of hard knocks on the face mask with his stick. I cover the puck until the ref blows his whistle.

Music starts blaring in the packed arena as the ref takes the puck and I stand back up.

Forty-seven seconds left.

I take a deep breath as their goalie skates to the bench and an extra player skates out.
I’m the last of the original crew still working at the pub.

Bridget met a guy online and moved to Australia, James got fired, Ivy had a kid, Zara went to work for her dad in Miami, and now Lauren is leaving too.

I’m the only one left.

With no prospects and no opportunities.

Until out of the blue, I get one.

I had long given up my career as a real estate agent.

It was over before it even started.

But now, someone found one of my old business cards and they need help finding a house.

Not a house. A mansion.

And it’s not some random guy.

It’s hockey superstar, Austin Gambill.

I can’t screw this up.

I have to be professional.

Even if all I want to do is pull my only client into every walk-in closet we pass and find out if those lips are as soft as they look.

I have to be on my best behavior.

But my hot superstar client is making that damn near impossible.

Location, location, location.

On the floor, in the kitchen, in the pool.

He is certainly a motivated buyer.

Motivated to close on a house and close on me.

I’m going to find him his dream home.

But will his dream involve me?

Austin found his dream house, but he also found the perfect girl to make it into a home. Will the hockey rookie score or miss wildly?

Book Four in The San Antonio Hyenas series. Hockey romance. No cheating, SAFE, Double V-cards, and a super sweet HEA always guaranteed.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

Austin

“Austin, you’re on,” Coach Moss says as he draws up the play. “Sutton, Svensson, and Kemp—you’re joining him.”

I’m exhausted, but I’m grinning at the opportunity. The score is three-three and there’s less than a minute left.

It’s been a hell of a game. The Halifax Icebreakers want this as badly as we do. They’re pushing us hard.

My entire team is gathered around, except for Tucker McKinstry who’s sitting in the penalty box by himself.

The crowd is singing Mr. Brightside by The Killers.

This whole year has been surreal.

I’m halfway through my rookie season and I’m still awestruck by it all. The arena is packed and every single person is on their feet. People out there are wearing my jersey. Gambill. Number Nine. I still can’t believe it.

I pictured these moments when I was a ten-year-old boy skating on the frozen pond back home in Michigan, practicing my slap shot, still out there long after the other boys had gone home for hot chocolate and cookies. I was always the last one on the ice, out there until my dad came and dragged me off, fingers frozen and ankles aching, but still begging for five more minutes.

All I wanted was to be a hockey player. I wanted to be like the Flamethrower. I wanted to be the great Harris Sutton.

And now, I’m standing beside Harris as the coach draws up the play.

Too bad he hates me.

“McKinstry is coming out in sixteen seconds,” Coach Moss says. “You’re going to be down one player until then. You’ll have to hold them off.”

I’m feeling nervous and excited and every other emotion possible. Meanwhile, Harris looks calm and cool like it’s just another day at the office. I guess when you’ve been in the league for ten years like he has, it is.

“Kemp, you bring it into their zone and if you have the shot, you take it,” Coach Moss says. “If not, Z-Back formation. They’re going to be expecting the slap shot from Sutton, but Gambill, you’re going to take it.”

Edvard smacks my shoulder with a grin on his face as the excited, nervous energy rippling through me comes to a boil. This is my chance.

The referee blows the whistle, which means our timeout is over. I skate to the circle with the boys as the best players on the Icebreakers skate over to meet us.

I can feel the tension in the air. The home crowd is on the edge of their seats. They want a win and I want to give it to them.

I’ve been feeling the pressure all season long. I was the number one draft pick and I’ve been trying to live up to the title, but it’s hard. These guys are no joke.

I’m having an okay season. Hardly what I had hoped for, but I’m trying to improve. I’m surrounded by so much talent on this team and I’m trying to take it all in.

I was ecstatic when I learned that I’d be on the same team as Harris Sutton, but that hasn’t gone as expected either.

When I was a kid, I had The Flamethrower’s posters on my wall. I wore his jersey so much the letters wore off. The back said Su n.

I practiced his moves and when the Hyenas played a game in Boston, I made my dad drive me over there. We waited outside the arena for four hours until he came out. He signed his hockey card for me and I still remember exactly what he said when my dad told him I was a hockey player.

“I can’t wait to watch you play one day, kid.”

That was my fuel for years. All through the junior and collegiate levels. All those early wake-up calls and grueling practices. Those words spurred me on. They kept me going. The great Harris Sutton was going to watch me play. It was all I cared about.

And then, I found out I’d be Harris’ teammate? I’d be skating beside him? I’d be passing him the puck? I couldn’t believe it.

But then I got here and he didn’t want anything to do with me. He was curt when I introduced myself and blew me off every time I tried to talk to him.

I don’t think he likes me and that’s been tough. It seems like I can’t do anything right around him.

Don’t meet your heroes, folks.

Lately, he’s been nicer. I see him smiling more. He seems less angry.

He recently found out that he has a five-year-old boy and he got back together with the mother, which I think is having a lot to do with it. It’s taken the edge off him.

Adrenaline starts ripping through me as the referee skates over with the puck. Sebastian is taking the face-off, because he’s the best. I’m playing left wing, Edvard Svensson—the Nordic Wonder—is right wing, Harris is left defensemen behind me, our team enforcer, Tucker McKinstry is in his usual spot in the penalty box, and our goalie Nolan Barlowe is ready in front of the net.
Five years ago, I had the night of my life with Harris Sutton.

Out of all the people in the bar, the famous hockey player chose me.

He was in town for a game and when he left, he took my virginity with him.

And he unknowingly left me with a souvenir.

Five years later, my souvenir is my whole world.

A five-year-old boy that I never told him about.

Lucas.

We’re happy and comfortable in our little life. I’ve moved on and settled into the grind of single motherhood.

But when Lucas overhears that his father is the great Harris Sutton, he becomes determined to meet him.

And my life is thrown into turmoil.

What if he rejects us?

What if he’s mad?

And even scarier, what if all of my wildest dreams are about to finally come true?

Harris has been caught up on a girl he met years ago. Little does he know that she has an adorable surprise waiting for him!

A Secret Baby awaits! Book Three in The San Antonio Hyenas series features a struggling hockey legend who gets a second wind thanks to the girl of his dreams. No cheating, SAFE, and a super sweet HEA always guaranteed.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

Harris

“After starting the season off strong,” the reporter says into the microphone at my pre-game press conference, “the San Antonio Hyenas are in a four-game losing streak. People are starting to put the blame on you. They say you’ve lost your edge. That the great Harris Sutton is not the same player he once was.”

He just stares at me, waiting for a comment.

“Is there a question in there?” I ask while glaring at him.

I hate these fucking things. I’m sitting at a table with about twelve microphones in my face while all these sports media ‘journalists’ and writers grill me with their stupid questions.

I want to be done with all of it, but every player is obligated to get their time in with the media. Press conferences before games, after games, one-on-one interviews with these out of shape suits with their journalism degrees who think they’re hockey experts because they watched a few games. Most of them have never even held a stick and can’t skate.

“Do you think it’s time to retire?” the guy asks. I know him. He’s always writing shit about me in his articles, saying I’m washed up.

Another reporter stands up. He’s a writer on Hockey Wrap-Up, a nightly thirty-minute show that sums up all the hockey news of the day.

“You have a big game tonight,” he says as he looks at me behind those thick glasses. “The Denver Landslides. A division team. The team who passed on you during your rookie season. Are you still bitter about that?”

“It was over ten years ago,” I answer. I’m trying not to roll my eyes. These fucking guys need something to write about in their stupid articles so they’re always manufacturing fake stories. I can already tell you what the headline is going to be.

Harris Sutton Feeling Extra Pressure To Beat The Team That Rejected Him.

But maybe it’s not totally fake. I do hate the Landslides for passing on me. It’s been an extra bit of motivation over the years to prove them wrong. I still think about it when I’m trying to get one last rep on the bench press or when I’m pushing my exhausted body on the ice while it’s screaming at me to throw in the towel.

When you’re a professional athlete training all the time, you take any extra bit of motivation you can find.

“Are you feeling extra pressure to win tonight after your slew of bad games?” he asks.

“I’m a professional hockey player,” I say in a monotone voice. “There’s pressure to win every game.”

“But more tonight?”

This guy is really trying to push his narrative. He’s just trying to get a comment out of me that he can play on his show. He’s not going to get it.

“No.”

He won’t let up. “Your shot accuracy has gone down thirty-seven percent this season,” he says as he reads off his phone, “you’ve had multiple passes stolen, and your assists, goals, and shots on net are all among the lowest of your career. You’re one of the oldest players in the league. Has Father Time caught up to you? Is it time for the once-great Flamethrower to retire?”

All eyes are on me, waiting for my answer.

I sigh as I look at the time. My required fifteen minutes are up.

“I’m focused on the game tonight,” I say, giving a canned answer. “And I’m not looking past that. Winning against Denver is my only focus right now.”

They all explode into more questions, but I stand up and ignore them all. I grab my hat and leave the room as they all try to get me to give them something that will generate clicks and views.

My teammate, Austin Gambill, is waiting to go in next for his required time.

“How are they today?” he asks, looking nervous.

“Like a bunch of jackals.”

They always are whenever a team is on a losing streak.

“We have to win tonight,” he says as he peeks into the room.

“Yeah,” I say as a heaviness takes over my body. “We gotta win.”

The game is not for a few hours so I have time to go home and relax.

I grab my coat from the locker room and head down to the parking lot. I sigh as I sink against the wall when I’m in the elevator by myself.

Those reporters’ questions swirl in my mind. Is it time to retire? Have I gone downhill? Are my best years behind me?

I hate that they’ve gotten to me. I hate that I’m like this.

Maybe I should have retired at my peak. I just… I’ve always wanted to win it all. To hold that Stoney Cup over my head. To bring one home.

I thought that maybe this year might be it, but my body is starting to give out. There’s a reason why there aren’t many thirty-six-year-olds in the league.

I’ve had three elbow surgeries over my career. I’ve had both knees replaced, a broken hand, three broken ribs, a broken nose, and now my back is starting to hurt.

Two minutes until my penalty is over.

Two minutes until I’m unleashed.

Two minutes until vicious, unrelenting violence.

My pulse is pounding as I watch the players skate past me. Harris steals the puck and makes a break for it.

Number nineteen clips him. Elbows him right in the forehead. Another cheap shot.

I grit my teeth as the crowd reacts.

Harris drops to a knee and grabs his forehead. It starts to bleed. The refs do nothing.

The home crowd is roaring in outrage as Harris skates to the bench, blood leaking down the side of his face.

The team doctor gets to work, stitching him up on the spot.

I clench and unclench my hands over and over, biding my time as the crowd boos.

They hate the Seattle Centaurs as much as I do.

They’re known for playing dirty. They’re always starting shit.

Well, I’m about to finish it.

1:43

I’m stuck in the penalty box after I punched one of the pricks in the ear. He checked our star player Sebastian Kemp a little too hard. I took that personally.

They all know I’m the enforcer on this team.

I’m here to protect all these men—Harris Sutton, Austin Gambill, Edvard Svensson—but especially Sebastian. They should know he’s off-limits when I’m in the game.

It’s almost time to teach them that lesson for good.

1:37

The game continues. The crowd gets anxious when Clint Maddock leaps onto the ice.

He’s the second toughest fucker in the league.

I’m the first.

My narrowed eyes are locked on the giant as he skates forward with a grin on his ugly face. He heads right for Austin’s back.

The crowd erupts when he slams into the rookie and sends him flying. I’m motionless as I watch Austin slide shoulder-first into the boards. Maddock kicks Austin’s stick away.

“What the fuck was that?!” Coach Moss screams at the ref who’s casually skating by. “Where’s the call?!”

The crowd is getting amped up. The arena is crackling with energy.

Every second my penalty decreases, the excitement increases.

1:19

We’re only six games into the season, but they know what I’m capable of. They know why the new owner signed me to the franchise. They know what I bring to the table and like the bloodthirsty Romans watching gladiators about to battle it out to the death, they can’t wait for the blood.

My jaw clenches as I watch that beast Maddock heading for the Swede. Svensson is fast, but he’s still not used to how we play in North America. They’re not as vicious in Europe.

Svensson crowds in front of the opposing team’s net. Someone pushes him. Svensson pushes him back.

Maddock storms over and head butts him. The Swede goes down.

:57

I’m motionless, but there’s a fire raging inside me as I sit here in the penalty box.

I’m stewing.

I’m a volcano about to blow.

:54

The puck flies over the glass and the ref blows the whistle.

There’s another scuffle before the game starts back up.

The lines change. Sebastian comes on.

My jaw clenches when I see Maddock eying him.

The ref drops the puck and the players explode into action.

Maddock heads right for Sebastian, barreling toward him like a rabid bull, but Kemp is fast and shifty. He’s good at slipping past hits and not taking any impact. Maddock slams into the boards, shaking them violently as Kemp skates away unscathed.

I’m going to destroy that motherfucker.

He’s going to be eating apple sauce through a tube for the next three months. All of his earnings will be used to pay hospital bills.

:37

Maddock charges Sebastian again.

He’s a giant block of muscle, but blocks of muscle don’t move too fast, and Sebastian skates past him. He swings his stick in frustration and hits Kemp’s ankle hard. He buckles but doesn’t go down.

I growl as an angry pounding thrashes in my ears.

Sebastian steals the puck and heads for the net.

We’re down one player thanks to my ass sitting in the penalty box, but the Hyenas are so stacked with talented that we still have them on the ropes.

:21

Sebastian passes the puck to Austin. Austin passes it back.

Maddock slams into Austin mid-ice, sending him tumbling onto his ass.

The crowd hollers in outrage. The refs do nothing.

It’s time to show this beast who’s the true alpha on the ice. It’s time to earn my paycheck. It’s time to inflict violence.

:11

Sebastian shoots on the net. The puck bounces off the goalie’s stick and stays in play.

My heart thunders with intensity as I look up at the penalty clock.

But I don’t even need to.

The crowd counts down for me.

“Ten! Nine! Eight!”

Austin goes for the puck and outmaneuvers the defenseman for it. He hooks it on his stick and shoots it back to Sebastian.

“Five! Four! Three!”

Sebastian pulls his stick back, ready to unleash a monstrous slapshot, but Maddock arrives a second before the puck.

He cracks him right in the jaw with his shoulder.

Sebastian flies back and lands flat on his back, arms flailing into the air.
Become a fan of the hottest hockey team in The San Antonio Hyenas.Where the guys know how to handle their big sticks and are so hot they'll melt the ice! A steamy new hockey series from OTT specialist, Olivia T. Turner. Insta-love at its finest with no cheating and a super sweet HEA always guaranteed

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Sebastian

“Now can you tell me?” I ask my agent with a steely look. “Why the hell am I in San Antonio?”

We’re outside an office in some swanky luxurious high-rise in the city waiting for a mystery meeting. It’s been all top-secret this and on-a-need-to-know-basis that for the past week. My agent Lydia said it would be worth it. She said it would blow my socks off.

I have to be honest, my expectations are low.

In terms of hockey cities, San Antonio ranks at the bottom. Literally. The San Antonio Hyenas are the worst team in the league. Have been for decades.

Whatever ‘amazing deal’ she’s cooked up is already stinking like a sweaty hockey bag in the Texas sun. I don’t want any part of it.

If the person we’re meeting hadn’t sent his private jet to pick me up, I would never have agreed to come. There’s no way I’d fly commercial just to tell the Hyenas that I’ll never play for their shitty team.

“Alright, I guess I can tell you!” Lydia says with a big energetic smile. It’s making my hangover even worse. My head is pounding and my patience is wearing thin. “How would you like to be a Hyena?”

“How would you like to be unemployed?”

“Hear me out,” she says as she perks up in her seat. “There’s a new owner in town. Did you hear about the acquisition this summer?”

“Yeah,” I say as I sink into the leather sofa, wishing I hadn’t gotten on that jet after all. I knew this would be a waste of time. “Some billionaire bought the team. So what?”

“So,” she says, barely able to contain her excitement. This energy is why I hired her as my agent when I entered the league five years ago. She seemed so enthusiastic and full of spunk. I thought her exuberance would get me more sponsorship deals and higher paycheques. I didn’t take into account how it would make my hangovers worse. “It’s not just any billionaire. It’s Brantley Van Morgan.”

I stare at her. Am I supposed to know who that is?

“I can see that you don’t look impressed,” she says, her smile not even fading a little bit. “But wait until you see what he has planned for this franchise.”

“It’s the fucking Hyenas,” I say with a laugh, even though it’s far from fucking funny. “Why would I ever play here?”

“I think you have to listen with an open mind and a clear heart.”

I shake my head as I listen to her. How can my agent be so out of touch with reality? The fucking Hyenas? Really?!

They call me The Sniper for a reason. I was the league scorer for the last five years. Nobody handles a puck like me. Five years in the league and I’ve brought home three Stoney Cups.

What a waste of time. Now, I’ll have to start agent shopping when I get home too.

“I can tell that you’re not happy,” she says when she sees my face. “But Sebastian, I think you’re going to—”

The door to the office opens, interrupting her. A guy in a fitted suit walks out and nods to us. “Mr. Van Morgan is ready to see you now.”

I sigh as I stand up. This better be over fast. I want to be back in Miami and settled in some sleazy bar three whiskeys deep before midnight.

“Remember,” Lydia whispers as we walk to the office. “Open mind.”

I’m more ready to give them a piece of my mind as I head in.

Brantley Van Fuckface is standing at the head of the huge table in his dark blue designer suit. “Welcome to the Hyenas headquarters, Mr. Kemp,” he says in a deep authoritative voice. He looks like he’s hovering around fifty years old with his salt-and-pepper hair and finely-groomed beard. “Please, take a seat.”

Lydia and him exchange hellos as I look around the luxurious conference room on my way to a seat. He has five suits on his side of the table. They look like a line of deranged mannequins with the way they’re smiling at me. I’m too hungover for this shit.

I slump in my chair as everyone sits down.

“Thank you for coming,” Van Morgan says with a nod. “I’m sure that Lydia filled you in?”

“Nope.”

“I wanted to keep it a surprise,” Lydia says, beaming as she looks at the billionaire. “I thought I’d let you tell him.”

Oh, God, I need a new agent. Preferably one who doesn’t call me before noon and isn’t so damn chipper all the time.

“Perfect,” Van Morgan says with a grin. “Mr. Kemp, we’d like to offer you a position on the San Antonio Hyenas.”

I stare at him with dead eyes.

He stares back at me.

Is this guy fucking for real? I was annoyed before, but now I’m just pissed.

I don’t mean to be cocky, but I’m the best damn player in the league. I won three Stoney Cups in a row. Three! I could go anywhere. Like I would come to this dumpster fire of an organization. Am I a joke to him?
