But then she calls for help. Stella.
She’s fierce and protective over her son, but she’s no match against a pack of sabrevipes—or the Kevins here to destroy us.
Time is of the essence, and she needs me.
It means running from the fight my people are in the midst of and setting off on a reckless mission with terrible odds.
I’m determined, though. I’ll protect my runaway alien at all costs.
Stella may hate every creature on Mortuus, including us morts, but it won’t stop me from keeping her and her son safe.
If she hates me for that, so be it. I’d rather have her annoyed company than spend another second alone.
Fate has brought me to them, as though delivering me right to my mate. All I have to do is convince her she’s forever mine.

A few solars before Avrell arrives…

I’m furious.

Fuming.

Explosive.

If I don’t put distance between Breccan and me, I’m going to knock his nog right off his shoulders.

How dare he keep all that food and seedlings and supplies hostage when we nearly rekking died from starvation? I despaired one revolution in the command center over how we would feed the morts and he let me think the worst. Allowed me to feel as though we had no hope.

We had everything down there.

Everything.

My respect for my commander is at a dangerous low.

I need to leave.

As soon as the idea pops into my nog, I can’t unthink it. I want to pack up and walk away. Take some time away from these people—these morts and their happy mates and adorable mortlings. It’s too much. The familiar rage that always simmers below my surface hisses and burns, threatening to spill over.

The morts are busy herding the females and mortlings into The Reserves, but I couldn’t participate. I’ve been pacing the command center, wondering just what I should do to expel this anger.

If Avrell and the others at Exilium weren’t planning to head this way, I’d go in that direction just for a change of scenery. But, if I go there, I’ll be all alone.

Maybe that’s what I need.

Space.

“Come in…Can…hear me?” a female calls out.

I storm over to the comms. “Zoe? Is everything okay?”

“Not…Zoe…” Static crackles along the lines. “Speak to human.”

Annoyance rises inside me. “They’re hiding from the impending Kevin attack, so all you have is me. Whether you like it or not, I’m going to be the one helping you. Now, where are you? Who is this?”

No response.

“Hello?” I grind out. “If you’re in trouble, I can help. Let me help you.”

“Fine…we’re in a cave…can see your building…”

“You’re close. What can you see around you so I can find you?”

“…lake…”

Lake Acido is the closest one and there’s a mountain on the other side that I can see from the Facility.

“Are you hurt?”

“No…they’re coming for us. We’ve locked…room.”

“Who? How many of you are there?”

“Two. Me…son…Henry.”

Stella. They thought she and her son were dead.

A loud, familiar roar rasps through the line, making both Stella and Henry scream.

Sabrevipes.

They’re trapped in a cave and those hungry rekking beasts are going to get them.

“Hurry!” she hisses.

“Stay hidden. I’m on my way.”

Without wasting a second, I rush through the Facility, throw on my zu-gear, grab some weapons and my pack, and rush out the door. The loud sound of ships arriving above bringing an army of Kevins is the least of my worries.

Stella and Henry need me.

Breccan will think I abandoned them, and maybe in a way, I’m eager to do this mission because I’m angry with him. It doesn’t matter, though. All that matters are the two very frightened aliens who will become a sabrevipe meal soon if I don’t save them.

Sabrevipes are relentless creatures. They’ll pursue them until they succeed.

I just can’t let that happen.

1

STELLA

“My tummy hurts,” Henry whimpers. His dirt-smudged hands clutch at his pitifully small belly. The welts on his arms make my brows furrow. He’d been stung by something—a bee, maybe?—and had been covered in welts ever since. Could the fever be related?

I push a lock of hair away from his forehead and frown. He’s warm and I don’t think it’s from how muggy these caves are. It’s been days since we’ve found food. We’re both dirty, tired, and starving. Our reserves of water are running dangerously low. I’d seen the Facility in the distance and turned to the caves instead, wanting to keep space between us and the aliens.

“I know, sweetheart. I’ll find something for us to eat soon.” I pull out a water bottle. I thought I’d packed enough to last us for weeks, but it goes faster than I calculated. Somehow, nothing in my life has gone as calculated, despite my best efforts. The only thing I seem to be capable of doing well is screwing up. “Here, drink some of this.”

He takes a few sips before making a face and pushing it away. His eyes shutter closed, and he shivers against me. He’s so small, so fragile and perfect. Will I have gone through hell to save him, only to lose him because of my mistakes?

“I want to go home.”

My heart breaks and I force myself not to react to his words. Sweet boy, you deserve so much better than the hand you’ve been dealt. “We can’t go back. You know that. We’ll find a new home, I promise. Sleep, sweetheart. You’ll feel better when you wake up.”

Sweet agony claws at my chest. That he could consider that prison home is a testament to his resilience—and my failure. No child should have had to grow up the way Henry did. Without wide-open spaces to run free, other children to play with or a family to keep them safe. Instead, he had me and an eight-by-eight cell for the majority of his short, dismal life. When we first slipped away from the prison, he’d been awestruck by everything. It didn’t even scare him that we were deep underground on an alien planet. Nothing seemed to scare him, meanwhile everything scares me.

They are doing nothing to prevent the spread of The Rades. Rekking nothing. It’s a shock that everyone here hasn’t caught it. Perhaps they have but aren’t presenting symptoms. There’s so much to explore now that I’m here.

Several females watch me warily as I pass by. I’ve decided to remain suited at all times until I can create a sterile environment that is contagion free. It’ll be impossible for me to treat the sick if I fall ill too.

I’m mentally making lists.

Lists and lists.

The ill. The recovered. The seemingly immune.

I’ll need lists for all three.

Supplies. Locations. Medications and tools.

Lists for those too.

So much to put into order before I can even begin. But I don’t have lots of time to spare. This illness moves quickly and is quite vicious. I’ll need to utilize some of the aliens here to assist, as well as put Theron and Hadrian to work. Everyone who is capable will have a role in aiding me in my efforts to eradicate this disease.

Finding an inoculation that prevents anyone else from catching The Rades is of utmost importance. There are mortlings being brought into this world, and they’ll be sent to The Eternals if we’re not aggressive in combating this illness.

By the time I reach their poor excuse of a Medical Bay, I’ve mentally made many lists. All of which I will begin divvying out duties to both morts and humans as soon as we all meet. For now, I need to see the doctor in charge.

Irritation is already clawing at me the moment I see her dark hair. She’s facing away from me as she bends over a bed, caring for one of the sick. One sweep of the Medical Bay, and I find it sorely lacking in all areas. I’m thankful I brought my own supplies so I can jump right into what I need to do.

But first, I must deal with her.

Zoe.

The most obnoxious female on this rekking planet.

My nemesis.

I won’t even acknowledge the fact that I find her incredibly attractive. I’m a male. She’s a female. We don’t see too many of them, so it’s natural for me to feel that way. If she kept her lips pressed together, I could tolerate her.

But she can’t.

Won’t.

Refuses.

The moment she opens her mouth, I’m ready to throttle her. I swear, the woman lives to torment me. Argues with everything I say. Challenges my every word. It’s maddening.

And over the comms, when she’s had enough, she just shuts off the channel. Now that I’m here, she can’t turn me off. I won’t go away. She’ll learn that quickly.

“I’ll need a full report on the sick. It’d be beneficial if you could categorize each patient based on their stage of the disease,” I bark out. “Now, female.”

She whips around, her dark, wavy hair flying around her like the violent winds of a geostorm. Light gray eyes almost glow like a magnastrike, ready to split the earth where I stand if she were capable. For such a small thing, she radiates power. So. Much. Power.

“Here to save the day, Doc?” she sneers, her lips curling up into a wicked smirk.

I should be irritated by her taunting words, but my cock does a jump in my suit, seemingly pleased at how pretty her lips are.

And they are pretty.

Shiny.

I bet they taste sweet too.

Rekk.

“Someone must,” I say, walking past her to observe the female in the bed who is pale and shivering. “How has your cure worked, hmm?”

“It’s coming along,” she lies.

I regard her, loving the way she shakes with anger. She’d been upset when I’d gone off on her for testing on herself. It’s surprising she never contracted the illness, but she doesn’t have the wherewithal to turn that information into something useful. Like an inoculation. That’s where I come in.

“I’ll need eight vials of your blood. Now. I’ll also need a sample of that patient’s blood. Once I have a proper list of all the infected, I’ll—”

“Slow your roll, asshole,” she growls. “This is my hospital. My rules. My patients. You came here to find a cure, but I won’t have you taking over. I’ve worked hard to help these people.”

“Shush, woman.”

She does shush at my barked order.

Her pink, pouty lips part for a moment, and lovely silence fills the air. Who knew those words would actually work on this female? I begin making another list—one for Zoe—when a screeching surges past her lips. Her face turns from red to purple. And then she’s charging like a starved sabrevipe and I’m a rogcow.

She’s mad.

The Rades have finally overtaken her.

Whap!

She flings one of her useless fists at me. It glances off my hard chest and she groans before shaking out her hand. Her beautiful face contorts into a pained expression.

“That fucking hurt!”

“Then why’d you do it?”

She screeches again. “Because you told me to shut the fuck up!”

Our world is dangerous and destroyed by our ancestors. We’re a bunch of hulking, broody mortarekkers left on this wretched planet, and it’d be enough to frighten any alien female upon waking to see our ugly nogs.
But my mate isn’t frightened. The moment she wakes, I claim her. How could I not when she’s the bravest and most beautiful female to ever walk this earth?
Surprisingly, she’s excited for this new adventure. Eager to be my side. A heroine like in all the stories she so fervently retells.
We could even have the happily ever after she speaks of. If only an army of evil, violent, cruel Kevins weren’t headed our way.
And I’m the one everyone is relying on to save them.
Each solar flies by quicker than the last. It’s a race to build a powerful weapon to blow them out of the sky and woo the prettiest female at the same time.
I’ve got this. I’m a mort of many talents. I’m one determined hero.
These Kevins think they’ll take away our happy ending? I rekking think not.

I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s like we have a date set for our extermination. That’s what this is after all. When they bring their “rain,” we all get sent to The Eternals. At least that’s what Julie says.

“We could build more ships,” I tell the quiet one. “But do I have enough time to design one and then make multiples? Probably not.”

Leaning back in my chair, I twist on the dial of the project I’m working on. It cranks and whirs.

“Ships won’t stop hundreds or thousands. Julie isn’t sure how many they’ll send.” I stop and regard the one who never talks back. “How many do you think they’ll send?”

I wait. She never answers, but I always give her time to respond.

“A rekking bunch. I agree,” I say with a sigh. “Hmm.”

Galen steps into the Medical Bay and shakes his head. “Don’t you ever get tired of talking to someone who never talks back? I thought you were ‘commsline dating’ as Molly calls it. What? All the females at the prison aren’t trying to escape to come mate with you? I’m so surprised.”

His dry tone indicates he’s anything but surprised.

I roll my eyes at him as I shove my tool into the side of my device and twist it. “I talk to Whisper because she’s a good listener.”

“Whisper? And that’s because she’s halfway to The Eternals.”

I glower at him. “Take it back.”

“What? Since she’s no longer in cryo, I have to come fill these bags all day with nutrients. Without these, she would perish. It’s sad, really. No one should have to continue to exist this way. If Breccan would let me, I would just cease feedings—”

“Out!” I roar, my sub-bones popping violently in my spine. “She can hear you.”

He flinches at my words but swaps out her feeding bags. “I apologize. It was unkind. I’m just…” He trails off with a sigh. “Antsy and agitated.”

Aren’t we all?

Galen is an unpredictable mort. Unlike Breccan or Draven who wear their grumpiness on the outside, Galen holds his inside. It just feeds and feeds until it grows into something uncontrollable. He simply explodes one solar without warning, raging and roaring, requiring several morts to calm him.

“You’re forgiven, by me,” I say, “but you will need to grovel some more with my mate.”

He pauses. “Your what?”

“What?”

“You just called her your mate.”

I laugh because I most certainly did not. “You need sleep, Galen. I did not call Whisper my mate.”

He gapes at me. “Oz, I know what I heard.”

Ignoring him, I prod on my device a few more times and then lift it up to show him. “What do you think?”

His nostrils flare at my blowing him off, but he inspects the zuta-metal contraption. “What is it?”

“What dries out rain?” I ask, smirking.

“The sun.”

“The humans are bringing the rain…” I remind him, hating how he flinches. Everyone is worried. I have a plan, though. “See this here?”

Galen nods.

“It uses a special thermal scanner to locate the hottest areas of the sun and absorb it.”

“Into that tiny thing?” he asks, astonished.

“No, this is a replica. A design based on some drawings of Earth II technology Julie explained. What I am going to build will be bigger. Much bigger.”

He cocks his nog to the side. “Then what?”

“I’m going to blow them out of the rekking sky with the heat of a thousand suns. Every last one of them.” I grin wide. “Jareth and I are going to start building it this evening.”

Galen smiles. “It better work.”

“It’ll work,” I tell him in confidence. “Now tell Whisper you’re sorry again.”

He chuckles. “I apologize, Whisper. It was thoughtless of me. I promise I won’t stop feeding you. Please don’t tell Molly. She’ll whip me.”

We both laugh as he leaves.

I look back down at my miniature thermablaster. I’m certain I can build one, and if I can get the specifics back to Julie, I could probably walk Theron and Hadrian through building one too. This has to work. It will work.

“Don’t worry, Whisper,” I tell my mate, “I won’t let them hurt you.”

It’s then I freeze.

I thought of her as my mate.

Galen didn’t mishear.

Rekk, I’m losing it.

You can’t want to mate with someone you’ve never met or spoken to. Whisper is a sleeping beauty, just like the story Emery told Hophalix one solar when I happened to be nearby. Asleep and waiting for her prince to save her. The story sort of resonated with me, but I am no prince. I’m a mort with a love for machines.

“You think I’ll ever find a mate?” I ask Whisper as I tinker. “Maybe one of Willow’s friends over at Exilium? I was only teasing when I said I could have multiple.” I let out a heavy sigh. “I just want one. I’d bring down all the Kevins in the universe just to have a future with one.”
A chance mission given by my commander has us sequestered on the Mayvina all alone. I only have a few solars to prove to her how good we can be together. It’s simple to me: handsome mort plus lovely alien equals mates forever. Right?
Wrong.
Nothing I say or do has an effect. She’s as stubborn as I am good looking. She’s the one thing I can’t control. A star shooting across the sky, never meant to be caught.

Da-dum-dum-dum!

I pound on the control panel with a metal rod I found hanging from the ceiling in the supply closet of the Mayvina, loving the way it echoes. Molly says that the beat I like to make is called music. I’ve never heard of music, but I’ve heard of singing. Both Molly and Aria do it all the time. Sometimes, I think up beats to go with their pleasant words. Sometimes I feel like I belong to Earth II instead of this decaying planet.

My ship purrs beautifully as we coast above the clouds with the great unknown above us. I admire the sparkly stars against the black backdrop and wonder if there are other planets besides this one and Earth II. Other women…

Because, the one that makes my cock weep like a fussy mortling whenever she’s near, hates me. Loathes my very existence.

It’s rather confusing.

Everyone loves me.

I’m Theron.

The Rogue Rekking Captain.

Master of the skies. Mate of the Mayvina. Handsome mort with the best hair and the best laugh and the best—

“Oh, God. Not again.”

I drop the metal rod and Willow all-too-happily kicks it into a corner before dropping into the co-captain’s seat.

“What?” I ask, lifting a brow as I rake my gaze down her front, lingering on the way her ample breasts strain against the fabric.

I tried.

Rekk how I tried to be attracted to one of the other humans.

Zoe offered to gouge my eyes out if I even thought of looking her way. Lyric found something pleasing within Hadrian—though I can’t imagine what. And the other humans there were simply terrified of my existence.

It didn’t matter.

My eyes were for only one.

Flaming red hair. Pale, speckled skin. Light blue eyes that harden whenever I’m near.

“I like that shirt,” I say, trying to be amicable.

“Of course you do,” she mutters. “Because you can almost see my tits. I’m surprised you stopped staring at your own reflection in the glass long enough to consider someone else besides yourself.”

“You can almost see them,” I state. “I’d probably stop looking at me if you showed me more of you.”

“Gross,” she grumbles. “Does this pickup line work often? Seriously, ew.”

“I’ve only really tried it on you,” I offer.

“Doesn’t make it any better. You’re like those guys back on Earth II who think they’re the bees’ knees.”

I’ve heard Molly say this before.

Grinning, I nod. “I am, in fact, the bees’ knees.”

“Ugh,” she groans. “You’re a hyperactive frat boy goofball with a license to drive a spaceship who thinks his balls are the biggest on the planet. Over it.”

Energy thrums through me now that she’s actually speaking to me. We’ve been in the air for one solar of our projected four solars’ travel, and all I get are hisses and grumbles. This feels like progress.

“If you’re referring to my sac, I imagine it is the largest and most appealing to the eye.” I waggle my brows at her before spinning in my chair and stopping again to face her. “I could show it to you so you could properly make that determination yourself.”

“You’re disgusting.”

I laugh and shrug. “Been called worse.”

“Like idiot? Dumbass? Player?”

I check off the first two with my fingers and then frown at the last one. “What’s a player?”

“You, Theron! I saw you flirting with every woman with a pair of tits. It’s gross. Here I almost bought into the whole ‘the morts were lonely and dying and looking for mates’ BS my mom and everyone else who’s been drinking the Kool-Aid spouts. Hell, even Lyric of all people has fallen into that line of thinking. But I see you, douchebag. You’re a player that given the time, you’ll sleep your way through the entire prison just because you can.” Her breasts jiggle after her long-winded rant. “Seriously, can you not look at my tits for like three seconds?”

I look away.

One…two…nope.

Rekk, her breasts are lovely.

“You know, screw it. You want them so badly. Have them,” she says, emphasizing her words by grabbing them and making my cock lurch in response. “Back home people have casual sex all the time to scratch an itch. Then, they can move on to their real matches. It’s called kissing a few frogs to find your prince. Who knows, maybe my prince is waiting for me at the Facility. I’m into the nerdy quiet type. Got anyone like that?” Her face is red from fury and she’s never looked more beautiful.

“You want to mate with me?” I ask, astonished.

It must be my dazzling smile that finally wore her down.

“Stop cheesing at me like that, goober.”

“Like this?” I grin, baring all my teeth.

A laugh escapes her, making my heart skip a beat. “I feel like this is my own personal hell. What did I do to deserve this?”

“Am I supposed to answer that or is it a ridiculous question?”

She snorts. “Not ridiculous—although yours was—it’s called a rhetorical question. And you’re not supposed to answer.”
Our planet has hope. Still decaying and barely inhabitable, but ours. With the arrival of the females, we’re no longer lonely.
Well, some of us aren’t.
For the rest, we ache for what they have.
Peace. Happiness. Love.
But where the other unmatched Morts want a mate to call their own, I’m different.
Life cruelly made me fall for the one person I’m not allowed to have. Bitterness and jealousy are my mates now. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will always be alone.
Until my commander sends me on a mission to rescue someone very important to his mate—her sister. A woman so different. So imperfect. So maddeningly defiant. Someone I have no interest in whatsoever.
This feral female will never own my heart. Or so I thought.
Love always has a plan of its own.

Playful. Fun. Adventurous.

Until I saw my first alien female.

The beating heart inside my chest thumped hard—so hard I worried I’d contracted a case of The Rades—when I looked at her soft, pale skin and her plump pink lips. I’d grown warm all over my body when I heard her voice. And when she spoke to me, I was completely enamored.

I would do anything for her.

Rekking anything.

Problem is, she’s not mine. No matter how much I want her to be, she’ll always belong to the mort who I think of as a father. He claimed her as if my heart that beat only for her didn’t matter.

And she claimed him too.

They have a mortling together now.

I press my clawed fingers to my chest where the ache won’t go away. It just burns each solar, hotter and more fierce. When Breccan told me I’d be leaving on this mission with Theron, I’d been furious. It took everything in me not to rage at him. I’m normally pretty in control of my emotions, but a few of my sub-bones popped upon his order, giving away my anger.

He knows.

I’ve teased him that if he ever goes to The Eternals, I will step in his place. But it’s truth. Some solars, I hate that I imagine a time when he’s gone and I must be her mate. It’s not that I wish Breccan gone, it’s that I wish Aria were mine.

Simply thinking her name has a lump of pain growing in my chest.

“Who kicked your rogcow?” Theron asks, sauntering into the control room of the Mayvina.

I snort and stare out at the clouds beyond the glass. We’re traveling just inside Mortuus’s atmosphere, above the raging geostorms. Magnastrikes light up the red clouds below us. It’s peaceful up here. I’d worried I’d feel trapped or contained, but instead I can relax some.

In the facility, I was trapped.

It was worse than the time Breccan stuck me in a reform cell for two solars as punishment when I went swimming in the underground wells. I’d thought because I was nearly as tall as him I could knock him over and exert my strength. He quickly subdued me and locked me in there to “cool my rekking nog off.” Back then, only a few revolutions ago, I hated every horrible second while behind those bars.

But nothing is as bad as being held in a building, forced to watch everyone around you fall in love, mate, and have mortlings. Worse yet, watch the one you love happy with her family.

“You’re quiet and it’s unsettling,” Theron huffs, kicking my chair once he sits in the captain’s seat. “I thought you’d enjoy escaping Breccan’s grumbling and at the very least be entertaining to me.”

I scowl at him. “You can’t force someone to be happy.”

“Why aren’t you happy? We’re on an adventure, Hadrian. Above the clouds, we’re free.” Theron is beaming and thrumming with wild energy.

“Do you ever get jealous of the other morts?” I ask, not meeting his curious stare.

“Always.”

I snap my eyes to meet his. “Really?”

“Absolutely. One day, I hope I’ll find a mate.”

“I don’t want to find a mate,” I growl. “I want Aria.”

His dark brows furl. “You know you can’t have Breccan’s mate. We’ve talked about this. Are you rekking mad?”

“Jareth and Sayer share Grace,” I argue. “Why can’t he share Aria with me?”

He lets out a ragged breath. “Hadrian, there’s a difference.”

“How?”

“Rekk, you really are young.”

I don’t remind him that four solars ago—when we embarked on this journey—I turned eighteen revolutions. In the hustle to get out and on this mission, no one remembered. Not Breccan. Not Aria. No one.

“I just don’t see the difference,” I mutter, already feeling defeated.

“Grace chose them both, but…”

He doesn’t have to say it.

But Aria didn’t choose me.

She chose Breccan and only Breccan.

The pain swells inside me.

“You can’t keep going on like this,” he says. “Wishing for something that will never happen. It’s not right.”

“I know,” I mutter, the words bitter on my tongue. Truth is, I don’t know. I can’t change the way I feel. I’m simply destined to ache for something I’ll never have.

“Oh,” Theron says, pulling something from his breast pocket. “I forgot to give this to you.” He tosses me a folded paper, and then swivels around in his chair so he can mess with some dials on the comms unit. The video screen is scrambled with white static.

I pick up the paper from my lap and unfold it. In our language, but Aria’s handwriting, I read the note.

Hadrian,

Look! I can write Mortuuan! Well, not really. Uvie is helping with this endeavor, but maybe one day I can do it on my own so I can teach Sokko and the others both English and Mortuuan. Anyway, I’m writing this to tell you happy birthday! Eighteen! I remember eighteen…I was drunk and it was terrible, but I got a new car, so that was fun. But I immediately wrecked it, so that was not fun. Thank God you don’t have alcohol here.
I would ask Avrell for some ghan-dust tablets, but he’s in a heated discussion with Calix. Both are growling and baring their fangs, seconds from ripping into each other. Calix has his reasons for not wanting to wake the remaining females, which I completely understand, but we also have Willow, Molly’s long lost daughter, to think about.

They may be the key to unlocking everything.

“Enough,” Breccan growls, effectively silencing all morts and the two alien females in the room. Even little Sokko, Breccan and Aria’s newborn mortling, grows quiet. The only sound he makes is suckling on his mother’s nipple. “I’ve heard your argument, Calix, and your worry is valid. Emery nearly lost her life when she was pulled from the cryotube.” Aria, Breccan’s mate and the leader of the females, frowns at the reminder.

Calix wraps a protective arm around his mate. She’s come a long way since then when Aria foolishly yanked her out of cryosleep before she was ready. However, Emery came with health issues. It wasn’t all Aria’s fault. I think he fails to remember that part.

“But it must be done. We cannot keep those two alien humans the way they are forever. We morts are just, good, and kind. We are not Kevins, which is why we won’t keep them caged and asleep any longer.” He frowns and gives Avrell a nod. “Check their vitals and then wake them. Emery and Calix will assist. Their discovery with the toxica agents could be useful if these aliens also have health issues.” The three of them leave without further argument.

Then, he points to me. “Sayer, I want you to continue attempting to reach Willow. I’m sure Molly will want to assist, as will Draven. It’s imperative you make contact with her.”

Of course I will. As our faction’s linguistics specialist, communication and language is my job. If there’s a way to speak to her, I’ll find it. “On it,” I affirm. “Right, Uvie?” I tug my hair out of its knot and it cascades down my front. With a quick twist, I affix it to the top of my head again—like Aria taught me—which is purposeful for keeping it out of my way while I work.

“Correct,” Uvie chirps from the overhead speakers. “I’m scanning the transmission for locator pings.”

“The Mayvina is purring like a baby sabrevipe, Brec,” Theron says, bouncing with his usual energy. “You’ve been wanting Hadrian to learn to pilot and we should patrol from the skies. This knocks two items off our list.”

Breccan grumbles but gives a nod that has Hadrian flinging up his rogstud horns and hooting with excitement.

Jareth catches my stare from across the table and smirks. He’s been fiddling with his piece of metal for weeks now. A piece that has Draven practically running at the mere sight of it. I lift my brow at him as though to ask, What are you going to do with that thing?

He rolls it across the table to me and I catch it in the palm of my hand just as it rolls off the table. I shake my head at him. Rekk no. I know what this ring is for and that’s his thing, not mine. My cock is too nice to willingly run a thick metal hoop through the tip of it.

“Jareth and Oz,” Breccan says, causing Jareth to straighten to attention. “Help Aria make sure the sub-faction is ready for our new aliens. See to it that my mate has what she needs to welcome them properly.”

He shouts out more orders to the other morts, and soon, we’re off and on our missions. Jareth bumps his shoulder to mine as we walk down the corridor, grabbing my attention.

“You think the last two females will know more than Molly and the other awoken aliens?” he asks, his brows furrowing together. His choppy black hair is wrecked today and I have the urge to help smooth it out some.

I shrug and let out a sigh. “Not sure. Each alien has known more than the last. If there’s any information they can offer, we could rekking use it. We have to find Willow.”

Jareth scowls. “So Breccan can force one of us to mate with her too?”

Screeching to a halt, I poke him in the chest, but the giant mort doesn’t move. “He won’t make anyone do anything they don’t want to do. There are plenty of other morts around here desperate for a chance to mate with one of the alien females.”

He seems to calm with my reassurance.

“You never gave me my ring back,” he says, his lips lifting up on one side.

I pat my pockets and feign confusion. “Must have lost it.”

“I could pierce you,” he offers, his black eyes gleaming wickedly.

“You could rekking try,” I growl, giving him a shove.
The morts, the only inhabitants of Mortuus, The Lost Planet, ever changed from the effects of the radiation, learned to adapt and, more importantly, to survive. In doing so, they became highly skilled and intelligent, capable of surviving even the worst conditions.

The planet was dangerous, and life wasn’t easy, but the morts had each other and that was all that mattered. They flourished in the protective shell of an abandoned building they converted into living quarters. Morts were given jobs, trained from birth in order to pass knowledge from generation to generation. Eventually, the morts hoped to extend the facility and conquer the wild, untamable outdoors.

Then, disaster struck.

The Rades, a disease contracted from complications of the radiation, began to infect increasing numbers of their population. First, there was fever, followed by sores, then finally madness and, inevitably, death. Quarantining the infected helped, but by then it was too late. Women, children, and the elderly were the first to go. One by one, morts caught The Rades and died. Whole families wiped away.

Until only ten males remained.

Salvation came years later when the morts discovered a ship filled with aliens—female aliens. Knowing it was their only chance at survival, they snuck on a passing ship and brought the females home to study—and to breed.

It was their only chance at survival.

Three females have been claimed. Two remain.

Prologue

Draven

Three Solars Later

I step through the small Decontamination Bay still sizzling from a near miss of a magnastrike. My sub-bones feel as though they’re alive and crawling with energy from the blinding white of the magnastrike that melted the back of my suit.

I was nearly rekking killed by the elements, yet it didn’t threaten to consume my mind like this facility does. The familiar roaring inside my nog comes raging to the forefront like a pack of hungry sabrevipes eager to feast on my sanity.

Stop thinking about it.

My skin crawls as I quickly dart my gaze back at the exit. I can escape if I need to. I’m not trapped here.

I’m not trapped.

I’m not trapped.

I can escape if I want.

Heat, nothing to do with my near miss with the magnastrike, burns through me. This heat was something that caught fire within me when I’d contracted The Rades. With the fire came the maddening thoughts. The voices. The terror. The darkness. The pain.

Inside my chest, my heart is pounding to the point I feel dizzy. The past three solars, aside from the horrible geostorm, were freeing. When Breccan asked for a volunteer to take Calix and his mate the necessary supplies they needed at Sector 1779, I’d jumped so fast at the chance, I made all the morts around me startle.

This place is a prison.

My mind is a prison.

This rekking planet is a prison.

And despite it all, everyone around me seems happy. Hopeful even. When Theron and Sayer brought back the aliens, it was as though all the morts were brought back to life. As though they had purpose again.

Everyone but me.

The arrival of the females only further aggravated my mind. Their soft, sweet voices remind me of my mother. Of a past where I once laughed and had purpose. I don’t laugh anymore. I don’t do anything aside from trying to live solar by solar. The only time I feel some semblance of peace is when I’m in The Tower. And since this geostorm has been ravaging us for nearly a revolution, I haven’t spent hardly any time at all up there. This trapped feeling only intensifies each solar.

At one point, I’d looked at the stars beyond and wondered if I could ride with Theron in the Mayvina. Maybe the trapped feeling would lessen if I was off this rekking planet. But all that died when the females arrived. They rooted us here. I can see it in Breccan’s eyes. He wants to make Mortuus a real home again. Everyone spends countless hours making new plans on how to make our lives better. They look at the future.

I’m stuck in the past.

So often my mind drifts to those dark times when I was captive to that disease. Despite healing from it physically, it has left its wicked mark on my brain. I’ll never be free of The Rades. Rekking never.

I’m tearing off my zu-gear as I leave the rigorous cleansing in the small Decontamination Bay when Hadrian saunters up to me, eyes wide and excited.

“The mortyoung is coming! You’re just in time!” he bellows. “What did you get?”

His fast talking and energetic movements make me tense. I eye the west entrance door. So close. Ignoring my urge to flee, I reach into my satchel and bring out Calix’s notes.

“The supplies Breccan was hoping for do not exist. I searched Sector 1779 myself. However, there are important notes that will be helpful. Plus—”
Like the fine petals of a lilabush. But unlike the healthy flowers that grow in Galen’s lab, this one wilts. With each passing solar, her skin grows more pallid. The tiny coughs rattle from her chest and her breaths come out labored.

Aria, the commander’s mate and leader of the human sub-faction, has been distracted creating the home for the humans and readying the space for the others to be woken up, but she is overlooking the needs of my lilapetal. She is letting her die before our very eyes.

As usual, when I’m stealing gazes of Emery, her yellow-haired nog will slowly turn and seek me out. She does not smile for she is too weak. She does not gesture in greeting. All she does is cry. Silently. Motionless. The tears I’ve tasted while she was in cryosleep were unlike anything my forked tongue has ever had the pleasure of licking. I crave to hold her in my solid arms and lick away her sweet sadness.

But I am not allowed to hold her.

Aria demands I keep my distance until Emery can decide these things for herself. They do not understand I’ve studied her expressions long before she became the next awoken one. I feel attuned to her. She coughs and sputters, and yet I do not fear the pathogens that litter the air around her. It is unimportant to me because her well-being trumps all. The idea of anyone else coughing like that is enough to have me running back to the lab and sitting under the equalizer to eliminate the bacteria.

Emery, I’d gladly catch whatever it is she ails from.

Then I could hold her while it stole us both from this life.

Nobody, especially Emery, deserves to die alone.

I won’t rekking allow it.

With my eyes locked on hers, I try to read her expressions. She’s sad but mostly worried. Using what little energy she does have, she tugs and twists at the zuta-metal that is around her arm. I feel like it unlocks an important secret about her. I’ve scoured through the test results Avrell has obtained from her and read through his notes.

For someone so brilliant, our faction’s physician is plagued with not knowing what to do.

There’s a name for her ailment. She spoke it to Aria and it’s been recorded, but it means nothing to us morts. Asthma. Inhaler. All we know is her lungs struggle even on her own planet, but at least there she had the proper medicine. She is too weak for us to try to send her back. It’s been discussed. With space’s compression on one’s lungs, she would not survive. That is written in Avrell’s notes as well.

Which means…

There is only one thing left to do.

I study contagious diseases and pathogens. I find cures for our people. It’s what I’m good at. Like second nature. This will be no different. I won’t stop until I’ve done it.

I will cure her.

Quietly, I step into the sub-faction and stalk her way, thankful that Hadrian, our youngest and most talkative mort, is nowhere to be seen. Her eyes widen in surprise, but she does not call out. Something that resembles relief flashes in her bright blue eyes. It’s enough to fuel me forward on my mission—a mission that’ll no doubt get me locked away in a reform cell, should Breccan and the others intercept it.

I cannot fail.

Kneeling beside her, I hover my palm over her cheek, desperate to touch her. But Aria’s commanding words still ring in my nog. Her laws about only touching if they ask. Hesitation swirls inside of me like the stirrings of an epic geostorm.

“Help me,” Emery croaks out, her body shuddering slightly as she pleads. “Help me or I will die.”

I allow my palm to stroke the side of her face—and then I do the unthinkable.

I gently pull my fading alien into my arms, careful not to break her, and carry her out of her new home.

With haste, I rush back to my lab, where I will lock us away. They’ll find us eventually, but I will have to make sure they can’t get in. I’ll work relentlessly, undisturbed by them, until I find a cure.

I will rekking save her.

“Relax now, lilapetal,” I urge, my voice soft, just for her. “I’m going to heal you.”

Or I’ll die trying.

1

Emery

It’s dark, the room where they lead us and the hallway beyond. It makes me shiver even though it’s warm enough to make the bodies around me emit the rank, sour scent of sweat. The thin, threadbare gown they gave us does little to contain body heat, so I try to wrap my arms around my waist and get a sharp jab in the ribs for attempting to struggle through the handcuffs I forgot I was wearing.
Our planet, Mortuus, is lost and dying. A desolate place where a few lone survivors dwell. My men have lost hope. Our future is bleak. Longevity is a luxury we can’t afford. The most we can hope for is survival. We’ve all but given up when an opportunity presents itself.

Five females—a chance at a future. Procuring these women went against everything I’d been taught, but desperate times call for desperate measures. They’re ours now. Asleep and made ready for breeding. We won’t die out—lost and forgotten. It’s our destiny to grow and once again inhabit our lonely planet.

I am Breccan Aloisius, the forgotten commander. My people will have the future they deserve. I’ll make sure of it.

My mind is made up…until she wakes and nothing goes as planned.

The sound echoes in the command center but it’s one I look forward to each solar. Every morning at sunrise, my routine is the same. I slide back the zuta-metal door that hides the massive window that covers the entire wall and allow the sunlight in.

Hot.

Bright.

All-consuming.

I exhale heavily and close my eyes to bask in it. The warmth on my pale white skin heats me to my chilled bones. Ultraviolet rays are harmful to our sensitive flesh but we crave what it offers nonetheless.

“This journey is imperative to our survival,” Galen repeats for the millionth time this solar cycle.

I open my eyes just so I can roll them. Gritting my teeth, I drag my gaze from The Graveyard, what we call what’s beyond the window, to our faction’s botanist. “So you’ve said,” I grunt back, a slight edge to my tone.

Galen frowns and his black irises flicker from round orbs to half-moon slits, a telltale sign of his frustration. Guilt niggles at me for upsetting him. He’s only trying to do his job, and he’s absolutely correct. But as much as I want to test the soil beyond what we can see of The Graveyard, like he’s been suggesting for ages, I’m leery.

“How are the R-levels in the air?” My eyes dart to my closest friend here, Calix.

Calix scratches at his jawline and his pointy ear wiggles on his left side, a common trait when he’s deep in thought. His glasses—that once belonged to his father Phalix—sit perched on his head. Phalix perished mysteriously on a trek into The Graveyard. Our best guess was a sabrevipe got him based on the state of his body.

“Hmm,” Calix says. His nostrils flare as he taps on his zenotablet and the device lights up in response. After a moment of reading the results, he glances up at me with worry marring his features. “Plus point four.”

“Lethal levels are point eight and above,” our computer system, Uvie, chirps in her feminine, digitized voice.

Galen lets out a hoot and rises from his chair. If he thinks he’s running out there without some sort of plan, he’s lost his rekking mind.

“Halt,” I bark out. “Plan?”

He puts his large hands on his hips and stares out the window, his onyx orbs gleaming with excitement. The lab coat he always wears over his minnasuit is smeared with soil samples that, if I prayed to any gods, I’d pray have been properly decontaminated. By the way Calix hisses when Galen brushes against his chair, I assume he’s just as concerned as I am.

“There,” he says, gesturing for the horizon with a sharp black claw. “Beyond Bleex Mountain.” He taps the incredibly thick and impenetrable glass, pointing at the highest mountain within our view. Somewhere beyond Bleex Mountain is an old facility that’s long been abandoned. “I want to assemble a team and travel there. Five morts. From my calculations, it would only take three full solars to make it there, at least two solars to collect samples, and then three solars back. The data doesn’t predict any geostorms anytime soon. Perfect travel conditions.” He turns and beams at me, baring the double fangs on each side of his mouth.

“No.” My instant reaction is always no. It’s unsafe. Despite the R-levels being in the mild zone, there are other threats. Sabrevipes are known to prowl the area, especially in good weather. They’re rekking huge, vicious, and tricky to kill. At least their meat is worth eating.

“We could always expand our search beyond the old Sector 1779 to see if maybe we find any working facilities—”

I cut Galen off with a warning growl. He presents this argument often, and even Calix agrees that it’s a terrible idea to go traipsing across The Graveyard in hopes of finding any mort life or working facilities.

“Breccan,” Galen says in a low voice. “We have to try. What if the soil is good for planting? We could take the seedlings that aren’t thriving and replant them.”

I wave a hand at him to dismiss his words. “The seedlings will die.” We’ll all die.

He flinches as though I’ve struck him. “But we need this for our survival because eventually—”

“No!” I roar, fisting my hands as I storm over to the window. I stare out into the barren wasteland outside of our mountain home and shake my nog. It’s dead. A few animals roam about that are worth capturing and eating, but other than that, it’s worthless space. Empty. Desolate. Rekking cruel. Rage bubbles up inside my chest and my ears flatten against my nog, a natural mort physiological reaction when preparing for a fight. “What good are thriving seedlings when our own race is dying out? The thing we need for the continuity of our people are females. And as you can see,” I hiss and gesture to the empty nothingness, “there isn’t anyone left.”
