I’m lucky.

I have a loving and supportive family.

I have two brothers who would kill for me.

I have a big group of friends, even though they’re all younger than me.

I’m the COO and chairperson of a multi-billion dollar company.

I’m my father’s little girl.

I’m my godfather’s princess.

I’m lucky.

Letting out a sigh, I look at my reflection in the mirror. The blue bridesmaid dress is gorgeous, and I’m happy for Christopher and Dash. They deserve their happily-ever-after. But the sight breaks my heart.

I’m thirty-two, and there’s no sign of my prince. My youngest brother, Tristan, got married a year ago. My other brother, Christopher, is getting married in six weeks.

Damn, everyone I know is settling down. Getting married. Having children.

Everyone but me.

The one thing I’ve wanted most in life keeps eluding me.

Well… kind of. There is a man I’m interested in, but he’s off-limits Like way off-limits.

Walking back to the dressing room, I carefully remove the dress and place it back on the hanger before putting on my suit. I fix my brown curls and put on some lipgloss, then force a smile around my mouth.

Time to get back to the office.

I thank the designer and walk out to my car. On the drive back to Indie Ink, the company started by my grandfather, I push my elusive dream deep down and slip into the role of Danny, the powerhouse businesswoman.

That’s what my life consists of. Roles. Loving daughter. Loyal friend. Supportive sister. Kickass businesswoman.

Letting out a sigh, I park my car in the designated spot. I climb out of the vehicle, and squaring my shoulders, I walk to the elevator. Once inside, I press the button for the top floor and listen to the soft music until the doors slide open. Stepping out, I walk to my office.

“How did the fitting go?” Dash, my sister-in-law to be, asks before I can pass by her office.

Smiling, I inject excitement into my voice. “The dress is gorgeous and ready for your big day.”

Dash claps her hands. “Just six more weeks.”

“It’s going to be amazing,” I chuckle, and then I slip into my office. Shutting the door, I lean back against it. I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

“You look tired,” Ryker suddenly says.

My eyes snap open, and seeing him in my chair, makes a wave of tingles rush over my skin.

Ryker West. My secret love.

Faking a scowl, I say, “Give me a heart attack next time.” I walk toward my desk, my frown deepening. “Get out of my chair.”

He grins at me while swiveling in the chair like a kid. “I’m here so we can go over all the files we need to take with us for the meeting.” His eyes lock with mine. “You know… for the trip to Africa…” His mouth curves into a sexy smirk. “Where it will just be the two of us.”

Ryker is my youngest brother’s best friend and also the company’s attorney. Since he started working at Indie Ink, taking over his father’s position in the company, he’s been doing his best to drive me insane.

It’s like there’s a constant push and pull between us. I do my best to ignore it, seeing as I’m six years older than him. Technically, I’m six and a half years older than him. The point is he’s off-limits, so it’s a constant battle to fight my feelings for him.

I stop next to the chair and let out a sigh. “I have last-minute business to take care of. We can look at the files later. Move.”

Ryker gets up, and rising to his full height, I have to tilt my head back to keep eye contact with him. With dark brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a face carved from whatever precious stone they have in heaven, Ryker is ruggedly handsome.

And off-limits. Like the forbidden fruit reincarnated into a hot-as-hell man to tempt the ever-loving shit out of me.

Actually, I started feeling the attraction between us when Ryker was a senior in high school. Yeah, totally made me feel like a perv. There I was, twenty-five and drooling over Tristan’s best friend. But damn, at eighteen, Ryker didn’t look like any other senior I’ve ever seen. He’s always been way too attractive for my ovaries to handle.
Only, no sperm out there is good enough for my eggs.
The last thing I expected was for my best friend to turn into an unrecognizable alpha the instant I said yes.

Looking at Josh, I wonder what I ever saw in him. Sure, he’s attractive, and he comes from a good family, but that’s where it ends. His demands and need to control my life is suffocating.

Turns out he’s nothing but a narcissist.

“Just leave,” I bite the words out. Josh has been going on and on about my friendship with Christopher, and it’s the one subject that’s not open for discussion.

“Leave?” He laughs as if it’s an absurd request. “You have no fucking idea what you’re doing. Don’t push me, or I promise you’ll regret it. We’ve been dating for a year, Dash. You’re willing to throw that away for Christopher? It just proves my point!”

Crossing my arms, I glare at him.

Josh claims guys and girls can’t be friends. Considering that my best friend is a guy, I disagree.

Actually, Josh has a problem if I talk to any guy. At first, it felt good to have a guy be jealous over me, but I can’t stand it anymore.

“Christopher is my best friend,” I snap. “You knew that when we started dating. I will not be told who I can and cannot be friends with. You’re controlling my entire life, and I won’t stand for it.”

“I have to control everything you do because you keep fucking up. Christ, you’re choosing Christopher over me after all I’ve done for you,” he says again, his features tight with anger. “He’s brainwashed you. It’s because I love you that I’m trying to help, baby. Why can’t you see that?”

This is why the fight started while we were having dinner at a restaurant. Now we’re back at the suite I share with my friends while attending Trinity Academy, and I just want to end things with Josh.

Lately, our relationship only revolves around us fighting about Christopher. It all started when Josh told me he didn’t like the fact that I was sharing a suite with three other guys. One of them being my cousin, Ryker, mind you. He said it was only a matter of time before I cheated on him.

Things just went downhill from that point.

Don’t wear that, it makes you look slutty.

Don’t eat that, you need to watch your figure because you know how much I love it.

You’ll study in my suite so I can make sure you’re actually studying.

Wear your hair up, not down.

Those shoes make you look too tall, wear flats.

Little things became big things, and here we are.

I’ve had enough. Screwing with my life is one thing, but I won’t have Josh insult Christopher.

“I won’t stand here and listen to you badmouthing Christopher. You forced me to choose,” I defend my actions. “Let’s see…” Exasperated, I hold out my hands. “The guy I’ve been dating a year who’s trying to control me, or my best friend since freaking birth?” The front door opens, and Christopher and his brother, Tristan, come into the suite just as I say, “That’s not a hard choice to make, Josh. I’ll choose Christopher a million times over the likes of you.”

A slap reverberates through me, sending me sprawling over the tiles. In absolute shock, my hand flies to my throbbing cheek, and only then it sinks in that Josh actually backhanded me.

Oh my God.

Because of the shock, I can only blink as I watch Christopher lunge at Josh. Christopher’s fist connects with Josh’s cheek, making his head snap back from the force. Tristan is right there with his older brother as they begin to beat the living shit out of Josh.

I’ve seen Christopher and Tristan angry before, but right now, they look downright murderous.

Ryker comes out of his room and runs to where I’m still on the floor, stunned out of my mind. Taking hold of my shoulders, Ryker pulls me up to my feet, and then his arm wraps around me. I gasp as the reality sinks in while Josh grunts from the fierce blows Christopher and Tristan are delivering.

It’s the first time anyone has hit me. I’ve never even had a spanking from my parents.

Ryker begins to pull me down the hallway as he asks, “Are you okay?”

I can only shake my head as pin-prickles creep over my skin, making my cheek sting more.

Ryker ushers me to my room, and when he shuts the door behind us, it mutes the sounds coming from the living room.

He rubs his hand up and down the length of my back. “What happened?”

My tongue feels numb, and again I lift my hand to my tender cheek. “He hit me.” The words sound weird, as if they don’t belong on my lips.

I feel Ryker tense, but before he can say anything else, the door to my room bursts open. The moment my eyes lock with Christopher’s, the bubble of shock pops. A sob escapes my lips, and I begin to shake my head, unable to believe what just happened.

“Hi, Daddy,” I say as I reach their table at the Christmas function.

Dad gets up and folds me into a warm hug. “Hey, snuggle-bug.”

When Dad lets me go, I embrace Mom before I take a seat at our table.

“How was the trip?” Mom asks.

Currently, I’m in my senior year, and I went on a skiing vacation with my friends.

“Good. I’m glad to be back, though. I missed you.”

After tonight's Christmas function for CRC Holdings and Indie Ink held at the country club, I plan on spending the week I still have left of my winter break at home doing nothing. I love my parents, and being with them always leaves me feeling recharged and ready to face the world again.

“We missed you, too,” Dad says as he leans over to press a kiss to my temple. Being a daddy’s girl, I soak in the affection.

“Are you coming home with us?” Mom asks, a hopeful expression on her face.

“Yes. My luggage is already at the house. I came with Fallon so I could ride back with you.”

A pleased smile forms on Mom’s face.

“That’s good,” Dad murmurs. His eyes sweep over me, then he says, “You look beautiful. Is that a new dress?”

I nod. “Yeah, Fallon made me wear it.” Fallon’s been my best friend since forever. Our families go way back, and her parents are my godparents. We’ll both be working together at CRC Holdings once we’re done with our degrees at Trinity Academy.

Someone catches Dad’s attention, and then he rises from his seat, saying, “The Hayes’ family just arrived. We should greet them.”

Standing up, I wait for my parents to take the lead, and then I follow behind them.

Even though I haven’t interacted much with the Hayes’ family, some of my best friends come from the families that own Indie Ink. They have close business ties with CRC Holdings, so I’ll be dealing a lot with them in the future.

“Carter,” Dad says as we reach them, “how are you?”

“Good,” Mr. Hayes replies. “And yourself?”

I wait for Mom to greet Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, and then I step forward, saying, “It’s good to see you again.”

“Wow,” Mrs. Hayes says, her gaze drifting over me. “You’ve grown into quite the vision, Hana.”

Mom is Korean, and I inherited her dark hair and creamy complexion, where my eyes are warm-brown like Dad’s. I’m short like Mom, though, barely reaching five feet three inches.

“Thank you, Mrs. Hayes. You look beautiful, as well.”

With my duties done, I excuse myself with a smile so I can join my friends. I’m halfway across the floor when a man suddenly steps back, and as he turns, his elbow connects with my neck, and I’m sent sprawling over the tiles.

Grabbing hold of my throat, I gasp for air from the sharp blow. I can feel the nearby guests staring at me, and it sends a wave of embarrassment through me, making my face flush.

“Oh, dear,” the man exclaims.

Hands grip hold of my shoulders, and I’m pushed up into a sitting position. Then I hear a low rumbling near my ear, “Are you okay?”

I nod, and as I begin to pick myself up off the tiles, the grip on my shoulders tightens, and I’m lifted to my feet.

“Thank you,” I murmur as I turn to the person who was kind enough to help me.

My eyes collide with an ice-blue gaze. It takes me a moment to realize Tristan Hayes is standing in front of me.

Damn, he’s changed a lot since I last saw him. How long has it been? Two years? Three?

He tilts his head, and I can swear there’s a flash of… warning? Apprehension ripples down my spine as if I’m standing face to face with a wolf.

“Hana,” he murmurs, his voice rough and deadly, the timbre causing ripples to spread through my body.

Not able to keep his gaze, I lower my eyes to his tie. “Tristan.” I begin to turn away. “Thank you for helping me.”

My intention of making a quick exit goes up in smoke when I’m stopped by the man who bumped into me. “Miss Cutler. So sorry for the little accident.”

He’s old enough to be my grandfather, so when his meaty hand settles on my shoulder, I instantly feel uncomfortable. “Like you said, it was an accident. If you’ll excuse me.”

His hand slides down to my bicep, and then his fingers wrap around my arm, making disgust churn in my stomach.
What’s a girl to do when the man she loves won’t give her the time of day?
Make herself irreplaceable in his life, of course.
Noah West

I’ve watched so many motivational videos on YouTube, looking for the meaning of love. None of them could really answer me. Some say it’s hormonal. Others say it’s a spiritual connection with another soul. All speculations, though.

Why do I look at Noah West and feel like I might die if he doesn’t love me back?

My eyes trace every inch of his body. He’s all hard muscle with an air of I-don’t-give-a-fuck giving him an edge.

It’s that edge that attracts me. I want to leap off of it and fall… and fall… and fall into everything that’s Noah West.

His dark blonde hair, hazel eyes, and the constant grin tugging at the corner of his mouth… sigh. Add that he has an IQ of between one hundred and sixty and two hundred, depending on which test you go with, and the man is damn near perfect.

But that edge. God, that edge draws me in like an addiction. I’m hooked, living for my next fix of when I’ll get to lay eyes on Noah again.

Right now, I’m high on the sight of him, where he’s standing near the barbeque, talking with Jase, Hunter, and Kao. Everyone’s here to celebrate Jase turning twenty.

I watch as Noah laughs at something my brother Jase says. Sigh. He glances toward the veranda, and as he turns to walk inside, I get up and follow him.

Now’s my chance to get him alone.

I watch as he goes into the restroom, and I wait at the end of the hallway with my heart stuck in my throat. I glance around, making sure there’s no one else nearby. I rub my sweaty hands on my jeans and take a couple of deep breaths.

My heart thumps faster from both nerves and excitement.

When the door to the restroom opens and light spills into the hallway, I want to slap my forehead for not switching on a light. Standing like a creep in the shadows, my voice sounds like I sucked on helium as I say, “Noah. Can we talk?”

His head snaps my way, and he instantly frowns. “Why are you standing in the dark?”

I move closer and turn on the light, and then I wring my hands nervously. “Ah, there’s something I want to say to you.”

The frown doesn’t leave his face but instead deepens. “Yeah, I think it would be better if you didn’t tell me anything.”

His words surprise me. “But you don’t know what I was about to say.”

His beautiful hazel eyes narrow on me, and then he grumbles, “Yes, I do.”

Noah begins to turn away from me, and it has me blurting, “I love you.”

He freezes, and he lets out an annoyed sigh. Turning back to me, he shakes his head, and his eyes lock with mine.

His expression is irritated and cold, making my heart lurch to my throat.

Then he mutters, “I’m not a pedophile. Date someone your own age.”

I watch him walk away, and it takes a couple of seconds for his words to sink in. Then my world implodes, the ground opens up, everything that was perfect in my life shatters into an aching mess.

I gasp for air and fight to keep control over the devastation wreaking havoc in my heart. Darting down the hallway, I rush up the stairs so I can get to the privacy of my bedroom.

When I shut the door behind me, I fall on my bed and bury my face in my pillows. Sobs begin to shudder through me as my heart breaks.

He was so mean. God, if he doesn’t feel the same, he could’ve at least been gentle about the whole thing.

Realizing Noah just outright rejected me without even caring about my emotions makes me feel like I don’t matter at all.

I try to silence my sobs as my first love goes up in flames. It scorches all my dreams and hopes, and not even my tears can extinguish the inferno of heartbreak.

NOAH

Watching Carla run up the stairs, I feel like shit.

Fuck, why did she have to go and do that?

I’ve picked up on the stares filled with longing and the interest in her eyes. But shit, she’s fifteen, nothing more than jailbait. Hell no, I can’t even bring myself to think of her as a young woman. To me, she’ll always be the little girl with pigtails and a defiant streak. I shake my head and let out a heavy breath.

I hate that I had to hurt her, but she has Reyes’ blood in her veins, which means she wouldn’t give up otherwise. I had to be direct, even if it was brutal.

Yeah, Carla is gorgeous, and if she was older, or I was younger… who knows. I shake my head again, stopping my thoughts dead in their tracks.

She’s fifteen. A kid. A definite hell no.

I walk over to where Kao’s standing with the rest of the group and say, “I’m heading back to the suite.”
You’re not going out dressed like that.”

“What’s wrong with how we’re dressed?” Carla asks, her eyebrows shooting up while she glances down at her way-too-short dress before looking at Aria’s.

I swear they do this on purpose, just to drive me insane.

“If the two of you go to the party looking like that, I’ll spend the entire night having to fight off guys. I’d like to have fun as well.”

Carla begins to pout. “All the girls will be dressed like this.”

I shake my head. “I don’t care.”

Aria, who’s been my best friend since we were in diapers, moves closer to me and taking hold of my hand, she gives me a pleading look. “Come on, Forest. We’re going to be late if we have to change now.”

My eyes drop to her legs, tanned, toned, and… yeah, way too sexy with those heels on.

“Come on.” She grins as she nods toward the front door.

Damn, they’ll be the death of me one of these days.

I let out a sigh. “So not fair,” I grumble as I turn to leave.

Just then the door opens and Uncle Mason, Aria’s father, who’s also my godfather, comes in. He’s best friends with my father, and our families go back four generations. He takes one look at the girls and instantly shakes his head. “Over my dead body.”

“Daddy.” Aria tries the same pleading look on her father.

“No.” Uncle Mason looks at me. “You were going to let them go out dressed like that?”

I shrug. “I was outnumbered.”

He shoots a glare at the girls. “Either you change into something that covers a hell of a lot more skin, or you’re not leaving this house.”

The girls let out huffs, but at least they go back upstairs.

Turning my attention to Uncle Mason, I say, “Thanks. They never listen to me.”

Uncle Mason throws his arm around my shoulders and pulls me to the living room. “Don’t worry. I’ve got your back.”

I let out a chuckle, and as we sit down to wait for the girls, Uncle Mason asks, “Are you going to the end of summer break party Aria mentioned?”

“Yeah, we figured we’d go say bye to all our high school friends.”

“Are y’all moving to the dorms tomorrow?”

“We’ll probably take our stuff over on Sunday. Aria and Carla want to get some last-minute shopping done.”

The three of us are starting at Trinity Academy this year. Where Carla and I are doing our MBAs, Aria is getting her degree in art. With her older brother, Hunter taking over Uncle Mason’s position at our company, CRC Holdings, they’re okay with Aria following her passion. She’s fucking good at painting abstract scenes, and I can already picture her owning a gallery one day.

Uncle Mason nods, then asks, “Are you speaking at the welcoming ceremony?”

“No, Fallon will be speaking on our behalf,” I answer.

“I haven’t seen her in a while. How is she?”

Fallon, my sister, is only a year older than me. She was in an accident a couple of months back and gave us one hell of a scare. Luckily, she and her fiancé, Kao, have fully recovered.

“She’s doing well.” I smile at Uncle Mason. “Kao and Fallon finally found a house, so she won’t be living in the dorms with us.”

“Mila, Hana, Jade, and Noah will still stay in the dorms, right?” Uncle Mason asks.

“Yeah, it will be the seven of us.”

“At least the girls will have you and Noah,” Uncle Mason lets out a sigh.

“We’ll look after them,” I reassure him.

Aria and Carla come down the stairs again, this time dressed in matching red silk blouses and jeans. Even with heels on, Aria’s still a head shorter than Carla, who’s wearing boots.

“That’s much better,” Uncle Mason says, a relieved smile spreading over his face.

Aria goes to press a kiss to her father’s cheek. “Bye, Daddy. Don’t wait up. We’ll probably sleep at Carla’s place.”

Uncle Mason looks at me. “No drinking.”

“Of course,” I chuckle. Uncle Mason reminds me every time we go somewhere. Not that we always listen, though.

Walking out of the house, I say, “Everyone from school will probably be at the bonfire. Don’t disappear from my sight without telling me.”

“Yes, Forest,” Carla says, rolling her eyes at me.

Aria gives me a smile. “Aww… it’s just because he loves us.”

“No, it’s because your fathers would kill me if something happened to the two of you.” And yeah, it’s because I love them, especially Aria. She’s the other half of my soul.

Aria shakes her head, and before she climbs in the car, she grins at me. “I know it’s because we’re your two favorite people.”

Yeah, she’s not wrong. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for the two of them.

I hear Aria’s laughter above the music, and it instantly brings a grin to my face.

My gaze locks on Fallon as she enters the restaurant on campus. Once again, her beauty knocks the air from my lungs. I’ve known her all my life, and the sight of her still stuns me.

I watch as she stops by a table to talk with Summer, one of the girls on the decorating committee with her. My eyes drink in Fallon’s golden-brown hair, her delicate features, her sharp gaze alight with intelligence.

When Fallon shakes her head at something Summer mentions, the corner of my mouth lifts. The girl of my dreams is nothing short of a control freak. Fallon takes care of everything at Trinity Academy as if it’s second nature to her. She never misses a beat.

Where I’m the happiest moving in the shadows, the spotlight follows Fallon. Even though she seems to take after her father, she got her mother’s big heart.

Fallon smiles at Summer before turning in my direction. I’m seated at our usual table that’s always reserved for our group of friends.

Our eyes lock and just having her attention on me is enough to make my heartbeat speed up.

Fallon and I have always been close. I even escorted her to her prom during her senior year. At first, we were just friends, but it changed when she started attending Trinity Academy a couple of months ago.

Initially, attraction began to grow between us. I became Fallon’s plus one for every event she had to attend. Now we spend most of our time together.

My gaze drifts over Fallon, and the love I have for her fills my heart to the point that it might burst from not being able to contain it. I’m addicted to the rush it gives me. Loving Fallon has become the only thing I live for. The woman is my beginning and end.

I know our friends wonder what’s going on between Fallon and me, but I’m in no hurry to tell them anything. I’m a selfish bastard when it comes to her. I want to enjoy every glance, every touch, every step closer to each other before I have to share it with the world.

As Fallon takes the chair next to me, I reach a hand up and wrapping my fingers around the back of her neck, I pull her closer and press my lips to the side of her head. My eyes drift shut, and I take a deep breath of her before murmuring, “How’s your day so far?”

“Good. I’m almost done arranging everything for the Christmas ball.” She pulls a menu closer for us to look at. “I found a white and silver dress.”

“For the ball?” I ask.

“Yeah.” Her eyes flit to mine. “If you wear a charcoal suit, we’ll match.”

“I’ll get one,” I assure her. Our gazes lock, and her feelings for me make her brown irises turn to liquid gold. Figuring I’ve let things linger long enough, I ask, “Are we going to go on a date at some point?”

Her eyes widen before they snap to the menu. It’s only for a moment before she looks at me again. That’s all it takes for Fallon to compose herself. Nothing can knock her off balance for long.

“You’ve taken your sweet time,” she chastises me, and a smile begins to play at the corner of her mouth.

My lips pull into a grin. “Because I don’t want to rush things with you.” My thumb caresses her soft skin underneath her hair, and I watch how my touch makes her lips part. “I want to enjoy every moment.” Fallon nods, her attention solely on me as I say, “I don’t want the others to know yet.”

A light frown mars her forehead. “Why?”

“I want our relationship to be ours before we have to share it with everyone.”

Fallon lifts her hand to my jaw while a soft smile curves her lips. “My hermit.” Her words are possessive and filled with love.

I lean closer to her and murmur, “Miss Reyes.”

Her eyes lock on mine, a playful look dancing in them. “Yes, Mr. Reed.”

“Will you have dinner with me tonight?”

Her smile turns into a happy grin. “I’d love to.”

“Put me down!” Mila’s voice echoes through the restaurant, and my eyes snap in her direction. I let out a chuckle when I see Jase has her tossed over his shoulder. He slaps her ass, and it has Mila laughing.

Mila’s like a sister to me, and seeing her happy after the hell she’s been through fills my heart with relief. Jase might be one of my best friends and Fallon’s cousin, but after everything he did for Mila, he’s become the pillar of our group.

I pull a little back from Fallon and glance at the menu. “What do you feel like eating?”

“I’ll have the Salmon salad.”

I scrunch my nose with fake disgust. I can’t stomach anything that comes out of the ocean. I tried to eat prawns once, and it was almost the death of me.

My eyes keep darting to the clock on the wall. The last couple of minutes feel like forever as I wait for the bell to ring.

I asked Jase to come pick me up after school so we can talk. It’s taken me months to gather the courage to tell Jase I’m in love with him. At first, I thought it would be enough to dream about him, but my feelings kept growing until all I could think about was Jase.

Dreams are no longer enough. I want the real thing with him, and I’m hoping he’ll feel the same way.

Staring out the window at the pouring rain, my thoughts are consumed with all things Jase. I keep reassuring myself I’m doing the right thing.

Jase always hugs you longer than the other girls in our group.

You’re the only one he kisses on the forehead.

You’re the only one he’s always teasing.

It has to mean something, right?

The shrill sound of the bell yanks me out of my thoughts, and I rush to grab my bag. I’m the first one up and out of the classroom.

“Mila,” Jade calls from behind me. “Wait for me.”

Reluctantly, I stop and wait for my cousin to catch up with me.

“Fallon ran to the office quickly. Let’s wait inside for her.”

“You can go ahead. I have other plans.”

Jade, Fallon, and Hana have been my best friends since forever. I didn’t tell them I’m planning on declaring my love for Jase. I’m scared they’d try to talk me out of it.

We’ve all grown up as a tight-knit group of friends, and with Jase being Fallon’s cousin, it might complicate things even more.

“Oh?” Jade frowns at me. “What plans? You didn’t mention this before.”

I shrug and begin to walk backward. “It’s nothing. I’ll catch you later.”

Before Jade can ask more questions, I dart down the hallway and burst through the doors. Using my bag to cover my head from the rain, I quickly make my way to the parking area while my gaze darts from car to car, looking for Jase’s.

When I don’t see his vehicle anywhere, I take cover under a tree. He’s probably just late because of the rain.

I hear screeching laughter, and when I see Jade, Fallon, and Hana run toward Fallon’s car, I duck behind the tree so they won’t see me.

As soon as they drive away, I step forward to have a clear view of the entrance for when Jase pulls in.

The minutes slowly begin to tick away, and with each one, a disappointing feeling sinks heavier into my stomach.

After waiting for thirty minutes, my disappointment begins to change into anger.

How could Jase forget?

Not caring I’ll get wetter than I already am, I begin to walk. Jase lives in the same neighborhood as me, and I decide to stop by his house before going home.

I’m determined to talk with him because I can’t keep weaving dreams around him if nothing will come from them.

To make my crappy day worse, the rain comes down harder, and by the time I reach Jase’s house, I not only look like a drowned cat, but I’m also freezing my butt off.

I walk around the mansion to the chalet Jase moved into when he turned eighteen. He had to beg his parents to let him move out of the main house, but like with everything else in his life, he got what he wanted.

When I step onto the porch, I set my bag aside, and first, try to squeeze the water from my hair.

Maybe I should first go home and get changed.

“No,” I whisper. If I go home now, I’ll chicken out completely. I lift my hand to the door, and I’m just about to knock when I hear a girl giggle from inside.

A frown rumples my forehead as dread begins to spin a web around my heart. Not wanting to make a fool of myself, I inch closer to the window and peek inside. When I see Jase sitting on his couch with a girl straddling him, my heart cracks right down the middle. He grins at her in a way he’s never looked at me before, and then he wraps a hand around the back of her neck and pulls her down into a heated kiss, and it splinters my dreams to shards.

Stupid, Mila!

I grab my bag and run away from the truth I never wanted to see.

Jase just thinks of me as a friend.

Two more girls come dashing around the side of the house, and I freeze. They’re laughing as they try to avoid getting wet, and I recognize them from school. They were in Jase’s senior class.

Before I can search for a place to hide in the perfectly landscaped garden, the door to Jase’s chalet opens. My broken heart begins to thunder in my chest, and my insides tighten with nerves.
Everything changed the night my boyfriend died. What should’ve been the most special moment of my life turned into a nightmare. Because of Hunter Chargill, I lost the love of my life. I’ll never forgive him.
Hunter used to be one of my best friends but it turns out he’s nothing more than an arrogant a-hole determined to make my life a living hell with his lies. But he should’ve known you can’t break something that’s already broken.
I manage to avoid him until my freshman year at Trinity Academy. Our cruel words and intimidating touches quickly spark a flame and instead of us going down in a blaze of hatred, desire sizzles to life.
I know I’m in trouble when I start enjoying our fights. Instead of wanting to punch him, I find myself wondering what his lips would feel like on mine.
A stupid game. One kiss. And my perfectly constructed walls come crashing down around me. I should feel guilty and make Hunter pay for what he’s done.
But sometimes a tormentor turns out to be a protector.
Coldhearted Heir is a stand-alone, College Romance. It deals with a sensitive subject.

I stop packing for a moment and lift my burning eyes to my friends. They spent the night at my house and have been trying to convince me to stay. “If I don’t go, I’ll end up starting a war. It’s only for the rest of the long weekend.”

Jase’s birthday party was a disaster, and I need time to process it all before school on Tuesday. My grandfather’s ranch has always been a safe haven for me.

Fallon gets up from the bed and moving closer to me, she takes hold of my hand. Her golden-brown hair is still a mess, and her soft brown eyes hold a world of understanding as she says, “You’re hurting right now. Running to your grandfather’s ranch won’t make anything better. Call Hunter and talk to him.”

Anger coats the disappointment swirling in my chest. My vision blurs, and my throat aches from all the effort it’s taking not to cry. I swallow hard and take a deep breath before the words come out, thick with hurt and anger. “If I could, I’d move to Virginia for good. Brady is ignoring my calls, and I never want to see Hunter again.”

Fallon looks to our friends for help. Mila rises from where she’s sitting on the floor amongst the scattered blankets and pillows, we used for the sleepover. “Jade, we’ve been a tight-knitted group since birth. Hunter was only looking out for you. Any of the guys would’ve done the same thing. Hunter was just the first to react. You know how protective they are of us.”

Shaking my head, I have to swallow hard to get the lump down. “Last night was supposed to be a special night for me. Hunter ruined it all.” I let out a harsh breath. “He embarrassed Brady in front of all our friends.” My shoulders slump as a wave of disappointment and sadness washes over me. “He humiliated me.” I pull my hand free from Fallon’s and reach for another shirt. Folding it, I voice my worry, “Lord only knows what happened between them when Hunter took Brady home.”

Hana stretches her body across the bed so she can reach the side table to grab her phone. “That’s it. I’m calling Hunter. We need to settle this ASAP.”

“Don’t!” Before I can continue objecting, my own phone begins to ring. Knowing the ringtone belongs to Brady, I almost break my neck when I jump over my luggage to get to the device before it can go to voicemail. “Brady!”

Breathless, I wait for his voice to come over the line.

“It’s me. Colton.” Hearing his voice makes a frown rumple my forehead.

This can’t be good. Is Brady so mad at me that he got his older brother to tell me we’re over?

Colton’s voice sounds numb as he says, “Things got bad last night.”

I fist my free hand next to my side as I stare at the wall in front of me. “Let me talk to Brady.” I need a chance to save our relationship. We’ve been dating for a year, and he’s been one of my best friends since the first day we started school.

We can’t end like this.

“Colton, we need to leave right now!” Hearing the panic in their mother’s voice makes my frown deepen.

“I’m coming,” Colton yells harshly before turning his attention back to our call. “Brady killed himself.”

Shock and confusion numb me, and it prevents the words from sinking in.

“Wh-what?” My mouth dries up, and my heart starts to beat faster.

“I have to go.”

The line goes dead. My hand drops from my ear, and my eyes creep to the phone in time to watch the screen go black. Silence stretches around me, making the air thin as my breathing speeds up.

“What did he say?” Fallon asks.

“I - I – I.” Unable to form the words, a wild panic bleeds through my body when what Colton just said begins to sink in.

No.

I shake my head and drop my phone as if it might burn me.

“Jade?” Mila comes to stand next to me, and I see the concern on my cousin’s face.

I hear a knock at my bedroom door, and it takes a lot of effort to turn my face toward it.

Daddy peeks inside. “We’re ready when you are.” His eyes meet mine, and that’s all it takes for the finality of Colton’s words to hit.

“Daddy,” I croak, and my breaths start to hitch in my throat, making it tighten with pain.
