The prettiest petite redhead with a nasty temper and holding onto the only eggnog in her tiny hands. Since she refuses to give it to me, I guess I’ll have to take them both.

Mia: You have got to be kidding me! I’m looking at the world upside down as I’m carried out of a grocery store in the middle of nowhere by a handsome brute. I’d call the cops in this Podunk town, but apparently, I’ve been nabbed by the Sheriff.
The snow is making it hard to see the road in front of me, including the dividing lines.

Of all the days to get stuck in a snowstorm, it has to be Christmas Eve. It’s about an hour until sunset, and with the already slippery roads and the continuous white flakes adding to the chaos, it’s probably best that I stop at the first town I see.

I squint my eyes as the wiper blades work double time to smear the white mess out of my field of vision, but it’s doing little to no good while I search for any hint of large green metal through all this white. Finally with a sigh of relief, I spot something up ahead.

Snowfall, New York

1 Mile

How apropos!

I take the one-mile drive slower than I would prefer. I was planning to drive down to New York City to meet some friends and spend the holidays. It’s clearly out of the question this Christmas. Maybe I should have left a day or two earlier instead of changing my plans at the last minute. Instead of enjoying the holidays with those I love, I’m forced to be alone and I have no one to blame but myself. Why did I finally decide to be impulsive? I’m never impulsive.

I wish I’d stayed with my family, but they have their own new families and I feel out of place. Last year my two cousins met their perfect matches, falling madly in love with twin sisters. My brother, Soren, is still single; working hard on the family vineyard is his passion, and he isn’t interested in finding love.

I am.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to meet men these days, and the ones I have met are either married or not manly enough for me. I need a man like my cousins and brother. Having grown up around them, there’s just some shit I can’t tolerate. I want a man like I read about and watch on TV—powerful, loving, and strong. Although, none of that will matter if I don’t concentrate on the road ahead.

Taking the exit, I come to a long road that has me making a left and going down another barren strip of snow-covered road for another mile before finding a sign that points in two directions. Stone Hill Right, Snowfall Left.

The sign on the highway had been for Snowfall, so I make the left, hoping that it leads to somewhere with inhabitants. Finally down the road on the left-hand side I spot a gas station. Since my tank is still pretty full and honestly, I just want to get somewhere and park so I’m safe, I continue on into the town. It’s quite busy with people milling around despite the falling snow, but then again, living here, it must be common. I creep down the road and squint my eyes, looking for a hotel nearby. It’s not a large town, and it looks like I’ve hit their main street. One light blinks red because it’s not even a traffic light, but rather a stop sign.

I make a complete stop and then roll my eyes, and that’s when I spot the Snowfall Inn. It’s a large building with a rustic feel, and outside is a burly man bundled up in a plaid winter coat shoveling the snow. Smiling, I pull into their small lot, hoping they have a signal and can take a credit card. I’m just glad they’re open.

I throw my purse over my shoulder, slip on my winter hat, and step outside of my vehicle, locking it. A blast of icy cold swipes across my face, so I quickly zip my coat and wrap up in my scarf. Locking my car door, I walk toward the sidewalk. Looking around at the small storefronts with snow blanketing the edges of the windowsills, I say, “Holy shit, I’ve run straight into a Hallmark movie.”

“Well, we do have some good-looking men here,” a young woman says, stepping alongside of me. I’m glad that I don’t scare easily because that was a little too quiet for me, or maybe I was lost in my thoughts. She’s got to be about my age, a bit shorter than me if that’s possible and as adorable as hell with her chocolate curls and rosy cheeks. “Although that one is taken.” She points to the handsome man I noticed when I first arrived. He gives us a look over his shoulder as he hears her speaking about him, smiles, and then he walks into the inn. Wow, yep that man is a looker and a half.

“Yeah, well, I can see why. Do you know if there is availability at the inn?” I ask, pointing to where her man was standing.

Anabelle: Fabio Fiore is hotter in person than I was prepared for. When we cooked up the plan to get my sister and his brother together, I never expected to be the one falling madly in love.
I check my phone, and I have about forty minutes until I’m supposed to meet him. “I have another fifteen minutes before I have to run out of here.”

“You’re stalling.”

“I’m not. Well, at least not any more than usual. You know how I hate going out of the house in the cold.”

“Bullshit. You like the snow.” She’s wearing a pair of duck lips at my lie.

“To play in it and look at it, but not to drive in this shit.” I truly hate driving in snow because it’s too scary for me.

“Um…it hasn’t snowed in three days. The streets are dry.”

Yeah, I’m running out of excuses. I sit on my bed and slip on my cute black heels. I’m sure as hell going to be freezing from the house to the car, but that’s the price of beauty, I suppose. Although, I could wear my other shoes until I get there. In fact, that’s exactly what I’m going to do, I think to myself, sliding off my heels and then slipping on a pair of sneakers over my nylons.

“Are you going to be okay with me going out?” I ask her.

“Of course I’m going to be fine. I’m not crippled, and I have everything I need pretty much at arm’s length once I plop my ass on the sofa. I do hope you plan on changing your shoes before you pull up to the restaurant. There will be a valet there to take the vehicle for you.”

“I forgot about that. Still, I’ll pull over the block before and slip the heels on.”

“Smart move.”

I stand and pack a small bag containing my heels and then step into the bathroom to finish getting ready.

Tonight, I have my first date in forever. It’s crazy that I’m even considering this, but after the Instagram post I saw two days ago, my heart had no problem accepting the date. Fabio Fiore, Isabelle’s boss at the restaurant thanked the surgeon with a free dinner at Fiore’s, so the doctor called asking if I’d like to have dinner with him. Isabelle’s days away from returning to work after mending faster than expected which thrills everyone, including her hot, playboy boss.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I ask again as I finish swiping my lipstick over my bottom lip. I hate leaving her alone when she’s already bored out of her mind. It’s been five weeks since she had surgery on her shoulder, and she’s itching to go back to work.

“Girl, you need to go out. He’s hot, and a surgeon. Not to mention that even after all these weeks, he hasn’t forgotten you.” He’s all of those things, and yet, I’m not attracted to him like that. No, my body and heart pound out of control for an unavailable bad boy. Maybe if I remind myself that Fabio, just got engaged, then I’ll be able to enjoy my date with John.

Despite the years Isabelle has worked with Fabio, he and I haven’t met in person. In fact, it’s only in the past two days that we’ve communicated via email about working together. Of course, he asks how his star employee is doing after her shoulder surgery before we go back and forth on what he’s looking for.

She takes my hand and drags me out of my room and toward the front door.

“Yeah, but maybe he’s only interested in seeing both of us naked,” I say, hoping to talk myself out of this date with Dr. John Malcolm, a prominent surgeon with everything going for him.

“He worked on my shoulder. The nurses had me prepped for the surgery, so he didn’t see any of my bits. You’re just making excuses so you can chicken out.”

“Okay, but I’m supposed to finish my mock-ups and website presentation for Fabio in two days,” I remind her, even though I know it won’t take me long since I have three options already completed.

“Well, that’s tomorrow. Go out tonight and enjoy Andre’s cooking, and maybe consider it research for the designs Fabio requested. When you get home, you can work and tell me how it went.”

“Fine.” I roll my eyes and give her a kiss on the cheek before one more twirl.

“You look incredible.” I’m dressed completely different from my usual attire. I’m a yoga pants with a ribbed tank and a thin pullover sweater or hoodie kind of girl. Tonight, I’m wearing a beautiful gown that goes to my feet with a pretty long slit up my thigh.

“You’re right. I look good,” I say, staring in the mirror near the front door for last-minute fixes. I’ve put my long hair up into a nice bun because it was the easiest style and it shows off my slender neck, and finished the look off with a very subtle hint of makeup and a thin gold necklace with a heart charm. Honestly, this was all Isabelle’s idea, but I pull it off nicely.
One look, one heartfelt moment and that’s all they had. Could either forget or was it enough to invade their souls and become a part of them?

Franco: I had no idea when I decided to thank the chef for a delish meal that I’d lose my heart to the most beautiful woman that ever existed. Our brief encounter was cut short, but I promised I’d return. I was normally a man of my word. However, fate had taken it out of my hands and taken me away from the woman I could never forget.

Two years. Two long, painful turns around the sun and a day and she still lived within my soul. Slowly I allowed the depression to set in until the choice to hide was taken away from me. She’d come to me and the beast that lives in this castle is afraid that he’ll never let his Belle go.

Isabelle: One time. It’s all it took for my heart to belong to Franco Fiore, my boss’s brother. Who knew that I’d fall head over heels for a man with one short meeting only to have my heart ripped from my chest with his accident? Days turned into months, and now after years, he and I will finally meet. Will he push me away? Does he even remember me? Sadly, I could never forget him, and today, I may have my heart broken for good if he does.
We’re from Rochester, so I’ve never been to this location before. It’s a bloody shame that it’s the first time since my brother opened Fiore’s that I’ve had a moment to drop in, but work has always kept me out of Buffalo which isn’t far from home at all. We’re originally from Italy, but when we were boys, my father moved the family to upstate New York to pursue other opportunities, leaving my uncle to manage the family vineyard.

“Grazie, Franco. It was my chef, Isabelle. She created the dish you had tonight.” I’ve never seen him smile with so much pride before. I wonder if there’s more to the chef than just her mastery in the kitchen. Could he be in love with her?

“Can we meet her?” I’m not usually the type to meet the chef, but this was the best meal I’ve ever had. Seriously, it lives on my tongue. I don’t think I concentrated on a thing Mia said the entire dinner, which isn’t something I’d usually do. Besides, if he does have feelings for her, I’d prefer to judge her character while I have the chance.

Both Mia and Fabio look at me strangely. “Okay. Although I can’t let you steal her from me. Julian is the skilled chef at your disposal.” He’s one of the chefs that works at the Rochester location closer to home, but he’s got nothing on this chef.

“Don’t be ridiculous. I just want to thank the artist,” I explain. It’s strange for me to want to, but I feel a need to meet her and thank her.

“Fine. Let me get Isabelle.” He nods and then walks toward the kitchen to get the amazing chef. A tension I don’t understand fills me up, as if I’m about to attack something. It’s like the feeling I get right before I close on a deal.

Mia opens her tablet and runs through my schedule for the week. I’m a real estate developer, and she’s my extremely talented assistant. “So you have everything ready for your flight tomorrow. I don’t know why you insist on making this trip, but I’m glad I’m not going with you.” She shakes her head at my insistence on flying out. She hates flying and prefers a long drive.

“I get that you hate flying, especially in a helicopter, but I’ve done it a thousand times.” It’s not my favorite mode of travel, but sometimes it’s the best way to get somewhere close, and more so when it pleases the clients.

“Yes, well, Mr. Morimoto will be pleased to take a tour, and maybe you’ll close that deal.” That’s the whole purpose of this flight. He’s eager to sell his company’s properties so that he can retire in peace without his children fighting over their inheritance. Greed is strong, and sloth is doubly intense.

“I should make you come along just to close the deal. You’ve been schmoozing him on the phone for weeks. I think he’s half in love.” Her bright blue eyes shoot wide open in horror at that notion.

“He’s like ninety,” my cousin hisses, pointing her fork at me as a warning.

“He’s only sixty-five,” I correct her, putting my hands up in mock surrender.

“Whatever. I’ll pass.” She laughs and takes a drink of her wine. The kitchen door swings open, and Fabio steps into the room again. He’s so tall that I can’t see the chef behind him.

“Your loss—” The words freeze on my tongue when Fabio steps out of the way.

Impossible.

My heart’s beating so hard that I can hear it in my ears. She’s about five-four, with long blonde hair and pouty lips. There’s something in the way her slender frame draws me in as she walks nervously toward me. How can she be so small and filled with such a gift?

“Franco, this is my head chef, Isabelle Jones.” I don’t acknowledge him because I can’t take my eyes off her light green ones that are wide with surprise. We silently stare, letting the world disappear around us, or at least I do. The steady cadence of my heart beats double-time. Does she feel the insane attraction as well? Can she hear my body buzzing for her?

“Hello, Mr. Fiore.” Her voice is soft, a bit shaky. She’s got to feel this…this magnetic energy. I need her to feel it, welcome it.

“Franco, please,” I insist.

“Franco,” she repeats like a caress.

“Isabelle, the food was fabulous.” It would have tasted better if I ate it off her, licking sauce off the plump breasts that press against her chef jacket. My eyes take in every inch of her.

Her blonde hair is wrapped up in a bun at the top of her head where she has two chopstick-like barrettes running through it. She swipes her tongue over her pale pink lips, wetting them as if she’s prepping them for me.
