- Michelle Schaper

Prologue

Valentin Solonik

Weak. She was so goddamn weak, so fragile, so breakable. They all were.

It started the same way every time. They’d fight at first, struggle against my bigger and much stronger body. They’d scream, cry out, and some might even curse at me, spit, and try to bite off my flesh. But it always ended up the same.

From a strong spirit, fighting for their lives and dignity to someone weak, pliable, and a whimpering mess, asking—no—begging for mercy.

Holding my hand over her lips, I muffled her screams. She tried to fight against me, but I overpowered her. This girl was too weak for me. She was nothing but a stupid pawn to this game, in this arena.

I liked the one who were fighters. The savages, wild ones. They’re the most fun to break. And they make the sweetest, prettiest doll a man could ever own.

Thrusting one last time into her unwilling, tight body, I emptied myself before pulling out. She stayed there on the floor, her legs opened and her body useless. She stared blankly at the ceiling. There was a numb look on her face. So easily broken. Her mind had been made of glass, easily shattering under my weight. Her lithe, sexy body was pliable, easily bent into whatever position I wanted to take her.

“Solonik, how much are you bidding tonight?” A voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked up to meet Carlos’s eyes. His face was deadly, a mask of darkness, but I could see the small victory smile.

“More than you. I don’t play to lose,” I drawled, standing on my feet. I kicked the useless girl away. She moaned in pain, and I couldn’t help but laugh watching another man crawl over her body. She was still bleeding between her legs where I had ripped through her virginity.

“Take her ass,” I said. “I haven’t fucked that hole yet. It will be tight for you.”

The man nodded too eagerly. He looked like someone who had just gotten his favorite candy to devour. I had my fun; the broken doll’s fate was in his hands now. With a shake of my head, I walked away with Carlos.

“I’m bidding one million on that girl.” He talked smoothly, pointing at the girl in the corner. She was on her knees, lined up like all the others. She was beautiful, pretty to look at, pretty enough to sink my dick in for one round but…

“Not my type,” I responded, while searching for someone who would really catch my eye.

They were all weak and without a fight. None of them had kept my interest for too long because they were so fucking easy to break. None had my attention, except for one.

She was waiting for me at home, like a nice little pet, a little princess in her tower, awaiting her master. Her King. She was an alluring beauty, charming everyone in her path.

I locked her away, for her tunes were only mine to hear and her skin only mine to touch. When she was good, I showered her with gold and diamonds, gave her a little fairy-tale while keeping a collar on her neck.

Even though she acted broken, I knew she was anything but. There was fire in her soul, in her eyes. I could see it all, and I couldn’t wait to pull it out and turn it to ashes…so slowly until her tears would run red.

Before my little pet, long before she became my wife…there was another.

A long time ago, I had captured a pretty siren with shiny black hair and enticing blue eyes. She was mine. Until she wasn’t. Until she was stolen away from me. He took her away.

Little did he know…he started a war that night.

I gave them eight years of happiness. I pitied them and let them have eight years of love. I kept silent, watching in the shadows.

When the right time came, I ripped it all away. I fucking obliterated their little happily ever after.

It was fun to watch. It was beautiful to hear Lyov Ivanshov scream in pain. A fucking pleasure to my ears.

He took her away from me, and in the end, I had returned the favor. Now, my goal was so close. I could almost feel it, sense and smell it. The Ivanshovs were about to come to a cruel end. They would all be on their knees before me.

Soon enough, I would be the Pakhan. The fucking master. The King.

It was time to win this little game of mine.

Chapter 1

Viktor

I stormed forward into the tiny estate—the cold, sterile building that used to be my home for a year. Where Valentin kept me hidden until I was ready to make my presence known and conquer the game, one move at a time.
*HIM
Family comes first. Always. That was drilled in my head since I was a little boy.
I lived with only one purpose. I would protect them. Fight for them. Kill for them. And die for them. I would take a bullet meant for them without a second thought.
When their safety, our little peaceful world, is compromised, I risk it all to protect them. Putting my life on the line, I made a deal with the Devil.
Because at the end of the day, my family comes first.
*Until HER.
She changes everything. The whole game plan. The moment our eyes met, I was gone. The pull between us so hard to resist.
She became my one and only undeniable Obsession. When it is time to make a choice, who would I choose?
My family or My Obsession?
********
*HER
I was living in the darkness for so long. No life. No choice. I was bent to his will, doing whatever he wanted me to do. I was no longer my own.
Only because the Devil owned me. Body and soul. But not my heart. Days after days, my hope slowly vanished into thin air.
*Until HIM.
One look was enough to make my heart beat just a little faster. He weaved his way into my unwelcome heart. He was there to stay, no matter how hard I tried to fight it.
Even when the darkness blinded us, he still stayed. He was my made man. My mafia man. And I, His Obsession.
But what if His Obsession is the one thing that ruins everything?
(Recommended to read THE MAFIA AND HIS ANGEL first, so that it is not too confusing. Also this is recommended to 17+ due to mature content)
Perfect. Just perfect.

I dug the knife deeper and watched the man scream. He writhed on the cold, hard, bloodied ground.

“Man, can you stop playing Joker?” Phoenix said behind my back.

“If I dye my hair green and wear red lipstick, will I look like Joker?” I replied, twisting the knife in the captive’s flesh before pulling it away.

He laughed mockingly. “No. You will look like a clown.”

He was mocking me. Maybe I’ll shave his head off in his sleep. That would teach him.

Slowly twirling the knife between my fingers, I stared at the man. He seemed captivated with each twirl and twist. I cocked my head to the side, regarding him.

And then, I threw the knife behind me.

“Goddamn it!”

My lips curved upward at the outburst. It looked like the knife had hit its target.

“Are you fucking serious? It almost took a chunk of my flesh!” Phoenix bellowed.

“So dramatic,” Alessio muttered from his position against the wall. “And hurry up! Ayla is waiting for me.”

From the corner of my eyes, I saw him pushing away from the wall. Taking two steps forward, he stopped behind me. “Finish him.”

Two words in the deadly silence of the dark alley. Two words spoken by my Boss. My King.

And his words were my command.

It had been for years.

Taking out an army knife from my breast pocket, I showed my captive the blade. He trembled in absolute fear. The shock and agony in his eyes were not mistaken. It could never be.

That was exactly what we fed on.

Fear. Our enemies’ fear. The look in their eyes when they were about die, it was what we lived for.

Some say we were cruel. Disgusting human beings. Heartless. Ruthless.

I would agree.

But I liked the word barbaric better. Unsympathetic. Sadistic. Vicious.

After all, we were killers.

We were born into this life. Since the very beginning, we breathed it.

From first breath…till our last.

His whimpers snapped me out of my thoughts. Was that piss I smelled?

Most probably. They always turned into disgusting carcasses when their death flashed in front of their eyes. Too bad for them it was always too late.

He opened his mouth to speak, but I never gave him a chance. My fingers tightened around the knife before I drove it down, right in the middle of his throat.

The man gurgled his last breath as his blood poured around him…and on me. Shaking my head in disgust, I spat on him.

“Foolish. They know the consequences, but they still try and play us,” I sneered at him.

His chest expanded as he took his last breath…and then silence. Nobody spoke a word as we stared at the dead man, his eyes still open. Still staring into mine.

The only difference was that his were empty, while mine were still very much alive, glowing with power.

I heard Phoenix talking over the phone while I stood up. My handkerchief was already out of my pocket, and I cleaned my hands, trying to remove the blood. My face was next. It felt sticky where the blood had splattered.

Appalling filth. I need a fucking shower now.

Why didn’t Alessio do it himself?

Oh, wait…because he didn’t want to get his hands dirty this time. His Angel was waiting for him at home.

Like that made him the lesser evil.

He was just as fucked up.

We were all fucked.

But we had her to bring us some light. A little bit of happiness. Some smiles…some occasional laughter. Some scraps of love.

She gave it all to us, without expecting anything in return. She loved so much and so hard that sometimes our hearts were not big enough to take it all.

Someone swore behind me. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I was brought back to the present.

Annoyingly, I had been lost in my thoughts too much lately. Very bad.

I was going to get killed if I don’t get my shit together.

“Boss,” I heard Phoenix warn.

What the fuck is he warning Alessio about? I turned around, facing the others.

Only to come face to face with Alessio pointing his gun at me.

“Seriously? We don’t have time for this,” I said, my eyes on the gun. He cocked his head to the side, his eyebrows lifted in amusement.

“Can we do this later? After we have disposed of the body? C’mon, man.”

I rolled my eyes, knowing Alessio wasn’t going to do something stupid. He wouldn’t. Not after everything.

Turning my back to him again, I put my life…everything in his hands. I gave him my full trust.

That was my first mistake.

I heard the gunshot first. It rang so loud in the silent alley. My heart thumped in response.

Then I felt it. The indescribable pain and burn that came after the bullet pierced my body.

He shot me.

He actually shot me.

In the ass.

What the ever-loving fuck?

He did not just fucking shoot me.
His screams were heard as another gunshot sounded. Blood seeped on the cold, hard ground as he writhed in pain.

“You are really stupid if you thought you would make it out alive,” Isaak growled behind me. I chuckled, because my bleeding captive was really stupid.

“Please…” he begged.

I tsked at the coward…and thief. Stealing more than tens of thousands of dollars from me would only lead to one end.

And his end would ultimately be death.

I squatted down beside him, tapping his head with the back of my gun. He stared at me with wide, frightened eyes. Poor thing. I wondered if my cold heart felt bad for this bastard’s ugly demise.

I cocked my head to the side, thoughtful. Do I feel bad?

Ha. Fuck no.

I enjoyed his fucking pain. Best thing that could happen after a shitty day. Maybe I could sleep better tonight.

“I don’t know if you’re lucky or unlucky that I caught you in Russia. Did you think Solonik would help you escape?” I asked, pressing the barrel harder into his temple.

He winced and shook his head. Well, tried to shake his head. I had him pinned against the hard ground. He couldn’t move even if he tried.

“I’ll go for unlucky then. Because I can kill you, have your blood splattered all over the ground and wall, and nobody would care. Nobody would bat an eye,” I hissed in his ear.

I huffed at the thought. What a stupid little thief.

My eyes followed his twitching legs, where the two bullets had pierced the skin. I was tempted to torture him some more. Unfortunately, I had a meeting to go to. Something more important at the moment.

“I’ll let you go this time,” I said with a shrug. Standing up, I nodded at the end of the alley. “Go on, now. Run before I change my mind.”

As expected…he did.

He limped toward the end of the dark alley, his legs mostly useless. I could almost smell his fear from where I was standing.

So pathetic.

I glanced at Isaak, who was leaning against the wall, a cigarette between his lips. He smirked and shook his head. I smiled too because the best part was finally here.

Raising my gun, I pointed at the back of the boy’s head, my sight secured on the spot. He didn’t notice the gun. He didn’t see his death coming.

Only because he was desperate to live—to escape.

Too bad for him.

My finger latched against the trigger, and I pulled it without a second thought. He dropped to the floor soundlessly, his body unmoving.

I walked over to where his dead body lay and kicked his feet. Nothing. His face was turned toward me, his eyes still open, looking at me lifelessly.

The fear in them was still there. I could also see the shock, the way his pupils were wider than before.

His mouth was opened, and trickle of blood dripped past his lips. Shaking my head, I turned away from the man. Isaak pushed away from the wall, coming toward me.

“I’m surprised they always fall for that line,” he said mockingly, staring at the unmoving body. “Can’t decide if they are either cowards or just plain stupid.”

“I would go with stupid.” I stuck my gun back inside my waistband and pulled my suit jacket over it.

Isaak scoffed before calling for clean-up. He rattled the address quickly before cutting the call off. “They’ll be here in five.”

We walked back to the black bulletproof Mercedes-Benz, its windows tinted for privacy. Absolutely nothing could be seen from the outside. Pretty useful when you had enemies on your case every day.

“To the Royalist,” I snapped as I got into the car. With Isaak in the front, the driver drove away without a single word. The drive wasn’t long, the club just a few blocks away.

When the car stopped and my door was opened, I stepped out into the fresh air. The dark, cold night masked our faces as we entered through the big doors of The Royalist.

At the entrance, the guard nodded his head and slightly bowed in respect. It was something given to me freely, without even asking.

They knew exactly how to greet a Boss. As he straightened, his eyes glanced around us, making sure we weren’t followed.

I walked inside with Isaak following closely behind. Several guards were stationed in the entrance hall. All of them nodded in my direction as I walked by.

The hall was lit by several really fucking expensive crystal chandeliers. We finally stopped in front of another door.

I raised an eyebrow at the guard, waiting for him to let us in. He swallowed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck.

He was obviously new.

“Is it only you?” he said in Russian, nodding behind me at Isaak. “And him?”

I glared and then snapped, “Yes. Do I need fucking permission before entering my own club?”

I made a vow to my Angel.

I promised to let her fly…I promised to save her soul.

And my vows are never broken.

This was a battle for my Angel.

Chapter 1

Viktor

He broke.

I watched Alessio break right in front of my eyes.

I have known him for years—since we were babies—and very few times had I seen him at his weakest moment.

Since his mother’s death, I had never seen him shed any tears. Of course not. He was the boss of four families. The Pakhan of the most ruthless Bratva. He was cruel and heartless.

Alessio Ivanshov didn’t cry.

But right now, he was breaking.

He didn’t care that his men were watching. All his focus was on Ayla.

I watched him cry. As he rocked Ayla back and forth, his arms tight around her, I watched my boss, the man whom I have known to be ruthless, cry for his woman.

I stood frozen, just a few feet away from them. My eyes shifted to Ayla, and my chest tightened. It was a small change of emotion, but it was painful. Painful because I had never felt this way before.

Nikolay moved to stand beside me, and I quickly shook my head, trying to clear my mind.

“This is messed up,” he muttered, a look of horror masking his face.

As I nodded, I saw Nina rushing past me. She knelt in front of Alessio and Ayla. Nina was still and I counted the seconds in my head.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

She turned around, her expression cold, but her eyes spoke volumes. She gave a slight shake of her head.

I understood what she meant. It was bad. Very bad.

Nina turned back around, and I saw her quickly removing her jacket.

“Alessio, we need to go,” she said, placing the jacket over Ayla’s almost bare body.

He didn’t move. Alessio was so lost, he didn’t even hear us.

“My jacket is too short. It barely covers her.”

Nikolay moved forward, removing his jacket. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. We were wasting time.

Fuck! We didn’t have time to waste. For all we knew, we were about to be ambushed as we stepped out.

I waited for Nina to wrap Nikolay’s jacket around Ayla’s body as much as she could with Alessio in the way.

When she was done, I nodded at her to move away. Taking her place in front of Alessio, I looked down at Ayla. Her face was pressed in Alessio’s neck, and it was hidden by her greasy, matted hair.

I leaned forward, ignoring the sound of Alessio choking back his cries. I even ignored the way my stomach cramped at the sight of Ayla like this. Moving her hair to the side, so that her bruised face and neck were visible, I placed my finger on the side of her neck, right over the pulse.

It was faint. Slow, but at a steady rate. It was good. At least for now.

My eyes shifted to her chest, watching the slow rise and fall. It was too slow, almost as if she was fighting to take each breath.

My gaze followed a path down her body to the shackles around her. I touched the heavy chain and pulled at the small latch on her left ankle. It gave way. The shackles weren’t locked around her wrists and ankles. One after another, I pulled them off until she was no longer chained.

Sighing, I looked up at Alessio. “We have to go.”

When he didn’t respond, I touched his shoulder. “Alessio, we need to get out of here. Now!”

No response. What was going on in his fucking mind right now? Was he too far gone?

Shaking my head, I pushed the thought away.

My hand tightened on his shoulder. There was only one way to snap him out of his daze.

“We need to get Ayla out. She is not safe here,” I muttered quietly.

His head snapped up, his eyes meeting mine. My heart might have stopped for a second. The look in his eyes was heartbreaking.

I remembered the day of his mother’s funeral. Or even the moment we found him after his mother’s death. He didn’t cry. No, he stood there emotionless, watching everything happening around him.

You would think a man like that wouldn’t understand heartbreak.

But the look in his eyes right now showed so much pain that even I felt it.

And just like that, the darkness never truly left me. It had been months since I ran away from the nightmare that was slowly killing me. I ran for my life. I ran for my freedom.

Until I had stumbled upon a man I thought would be worse than my nightmare.

Oh, little did I know…

He became my savior, and I was still basking in our blissful times.

Chapter 1

Maddie and I were walking back to my room after dinner when she suddenly stopped on the top stair. Stopping in my tracks, I looked at her sideways. “What’s wrong?”

Instead of answering, she called out, “Alessio.”

My head snapped in the opposite direction, and I saw Alessio’s back to us. He was walking toward his office. At the sound of Maddie’s voice, he turned around, his eyebrows furrowed in question.

“What is it?” he mumbled, approaching us.

Maddie dragged me up the last step and stopped in front of Alessio. “I was thinking of taking Ayla out shopping tomorrow. She’s been living with us for some time now and doesn’t have any clothes except for her maid dresses and the one outfit Mum got her on the first day.”

Shopping? Shocked, I stared at Maddie. She didn’t tell me anything about this.

From the corner of my eyes, I saw Alessio looking at me. I glanced up, and our eyes met. Licking my lips nervously, I played with the hem of my dress as his penetrating gaze sent a shiver down my body.

“Of course. You can take her,” Alessio said, keeping his blue eyes on me. “But why are you asking me?” he questioned, now looking at Maddie suspiciously.

Maddie rolled her eyes. Letting out a huff of annoyance, she crossed her arms over her chest. “I’m not asking you, I’m telling you. There’s a difference. I’m just letting you know so you don’t go batshit crazy and start panicking when you don’t see Ayla.”

I didn’t pay attention to Maddie’s words because my mind was still trying to register what Alessio said.

I was allowed to go out. Alessio was letting me go out. I stared at Alessio, speechless, my body trembling slightly.

I was never allowed to leave my father’s estate, not even a step outside of the gates. The furthest I had ever gone was to our back garden. I wasn’t allowed to roam free. Ever. All my days and nights were spent locked in my room or the piano room. I didn’t know much about the outside world.

But now, I could go see the world.

I could go shopping…something I never had a chance to do. Alberto was the one who chose all my clothing. I just had to wear what he gave me, a doll he liked to dress and own.

Alessio and Maddie were talking, but their voices sounded like they were coming from under water. I could only focus on Alessio’s face. He was slowly giving me things I had lost. Alessio was giving me back my life.

Freedom. I was finally truly free.

The one thing I had always wanted, hoped, and prayed for every night as I cried myself to sleep, my soul breaking. After every torturous night, that was what I dreamed of.

Alessio eyes were on me again. I saw his forehead crease in worry. “Ayla?”

I snapped out of my daze and then nodded my head. “Yeah?”

“Are you okay with going shopping tomorrow?” he asked softly.

I nodded again, but this time my lips stretched in a smile. “Yup.”

“Good.” He gave me a small smile, then turned around and walked away. Swiveling around, I grabbed Maddie’s hands, excitement coursing through my body until I vibrated with it.

“I can go shopping?” I asked, staring into her eyes, my heart feeling hopeful.

“Of course, babe. Why not? You desperately need clothes.” She laughed.

We resumed our walk to my bedroom. I was giddy, like a child getting a new toy for the first time. “When are we going?”

“Maybe after lunch? Tomorrow?” she suggested.

“That sounds good. I can’t wait,” I muttered, closing the door behind us.

Maddie jumped on the bed and took the remote in her hand. “So? What movie?”

I shrugged and joined her on the bed. Propping myself on the pillow, I looked at the TV as she searched for some movies. “I don’t know. Maybe something funny.” I paused and then looked at Maddie from the corner on my eyes. “And romantic?” I finished.

She laughed. “Gotcha, babe. The Notebook it is.”

“The Notebook?” I questioned as she started the movie.

“Get your tissues ready, Ayla. You’re going to love this.”

***

I woke up from a kiss behind my ear. The ticklish feeling brought me back from my deep slumber, and I let out a yawn. I moaned, stretching out as the sunlight shone brightly behind my closed eyes. I could feel its warmth bathing my face, and I smiled.
It was my second in command.

“I’m coming,” I told him. I didn’t like his tone. I could tell it was something really bad. His nervousness made me nervous. Viktor was a crazy bastard, and if something had him this riled up, then it was something big. Something I really wouldn’t like.

I walked out of my office and found a few of my men standing in the hallway, lined up and on guard. They bowed their heads in respect as I walked by.

As I stepped into the dark hallway that led to the soundproof basement, my body tensed. The air around me was stale and my steps were hard against the silence as I prepared myself for the worst.

When I opened the door, I saw Viktor leaning against the wall, his head cast down in defeat. My entrance didn’t even faze him, he was so lost in his own thoughts. I cleared my throat and he glanced up.

His expression conveyed horror and disgust. “It’s bad,” Viktor said, pointing toward the room. I nodded, then walked farther inside, leading the way while Viktor fell into step behind me.

Stomping forward, I found a bloodied man strapped to a chair. The basement room was empty except for the chair in the middle and a table at the back. Four of my men stood around him. They were my right-hand men.

I didn’t recognize the captive, but when he looked up at me, his eyes were filled with terror. As I got closer, his already pale face twisted in pain. He pushed back against the chair when I stopped in front of him.

“What the fuck is going on?” My voice boomed around the room. I didn’t take my eyes off the man, but when I saw him flinch, satisfaction coursed through my body. The fucker better be petrified.

Viktor walked around me to stand behind the man. He grabbed the captive’s hair and pulled hard until his neck snapped back painfully. The man screamed and thrashed.

I lifted my eyes from the battered captive to meet Viktor’s disgusted gaze.

“The fucker betrayed us. I heard him talking. The fucking Italians. He’s working for them,” Viktor growled.

I looked down at the man and his eyes were closed. He refused to look at me. The anger that took over my body was indescribable. He fucking betrayed me. Me. The. Fucking. King. The person who owned his life.

Nobody betrayed me and got away with it. I trusted all my men. They were my family, but when one of my own betrayed me, they paid the ultimate price. Death. Very painful death.

Taking a deep breath and schooling my features, I stepped away from the strapped man.

“Bring me a chair,” I yelled. I saw one of my men scrambling back, doing as I commanded.

“Here you go, Boss,” Phoenix said a minute later. He placed the chair behind me and slowly stepped away.

I sat down and faced the motherfucker. He opened his eyes and stared directly at me. My temper flared. Leaning forward, I snarled into his face. “Why?”

His body shook in fear but he refused to answer. I looked up and signaled Viktor. He let the man go and walked toward the table at the back of the room, only to come back with a cutter in his hand.

I smiled almost maliciously and leaned back against the chair, crossing my arms over my chest.

“Enjoy,” I said, nodding at Viktor.

As he got to work, the man’s screams filled the room. Blood dripped all over the floor, but I kept my gaze fixed on him the whole time. When he started to lose consciousness, I raised my hand. Viktor instantly stopped his torturous ministrations.

Leaning forward again, I asked, “Why and who?”

I laughed when he glared at me. Viktor leaned forward and punched him. “Show respect.”

“I will ask one last time. Why and who?” I said menacingly as I took his face in my hand. My fingers pressed hard into his cheek until blood oozed badly from his wounds.

When he still wouldn’t answer, I let his face go and stood up, pushing my chair away. I wasn’t going to get my hands dirty this time. But the man strapped against the chair in front of me forced my hand. The rest of my men needed to see me kill. They needed to see the consequences of betraying me.

They needed to see the worst of me. How brutal I could be. It appeared they had forgotten.

I was feared by all and nobody fucking betrayed me.

Walking toward the table, I picked up the pliers. As I turned, all the men took a step back. Viktor smiled sadistically and shook his head. “Fuck, yeah. Now you’re talking.”

Viktor held the captive’s head against the chair. I stood in front of him and roughly grabbed his chin, not caring if I hurt him. I forced his mouth open and held the pliers to his teeth.
