The hockey player, the surfer, and a lesson neither can forget…
Luca
I love the beach, and I’m a good athlete. Learning how to surf should be a breeze, right? Wrong. In a twist, hockey is nothing like surfing. That’s okay—I just need a diversion to round out my new life in So Cal while I figure out what comes next. As long as I keep my head above water, this could be fun. Bonus…my instructor is hot.
Cal
Teaching newbies to surf is easy money. Usually. My newest student is a wild card who seems to think his jock status should make him a natural at everything he tries, and I can see why. Luca is…special. He’s dynamic, energetic, and fun. It’s hard not to like him. But I like him a little too much.
This could be trouble.

Books in Series:

Out in College Series by Lane Hayes

Books by Author:

Lane Hayes

1

“As you start to walk on the way, the way appears.” —Rumi

* * *

Luca

Eight a.m. was way too early for this nonsense. Whose idea was it to transfer to the West Coast and learn how to surf?

Oh, yeah…mine.

It might have been helpful if someone had mentioned that this endeavor required waking up at the crack of dawn and squeezing my booty into a borrowed skintight wetsuit. Those little details could have been game changers. Too late now. Surf lessons were courtesy of my parents. I had to show up for lesson number one or figure out how to lie to my mom when she asked if the hobby I’d hoped might replace hockey was keeping me out of trouble in Lala Land.

The jury was still out on that. I’d been in Southern California for two months so far, having the time of my life with my new roommates and a few fellow transfer students I’d met at orientation. The partying had escalated lately, too. I’d woken up with a hangover every day for a week straight…and a naked dude in my bed. I don’t recommend either. The hangovers sucked, and waking up with crusty jizz on my stomach next to a snoring stranger who’d stolen the covers in the middle of the night wasn’t so glamorous.

I’d had more awkward morning-after conversations with guys whose names I didn’t know in the last sixty days than I’d had since, well…ever. It was time to get my act together and settle into a scholastically responsible routine. I could do this.

With classes starting at Long Beach State in a week, I didn’t want to be the guy who slept through my alarm and was late every other day. I knew from experience that it was damn easy to get stuck in bad habits. I’d given myself a long leash to have all the fun my heart desired this summer, but slipping into loser gear was not an option.

That was where surfing lessons came in. I’d always wanted to learn how, but Ann Arbor wasn’t exactly known for its surf scene. I’d grown up playing hockey like every other kid on my block. And loving it. But those days were over. I had a new life on a new coast at a new school. So why not try a new sport too? One that I could do with a friend who would make sure I got my sorry ass of bed before noon.

“Help me out, Luca.” Zoe lifted her ponytail out of the way and turned.

I zipped her up and requested she return the favor as we waited for the owner to pull a couple of boards off the rack. Jay…or maybe his name was Ray—was small and wiry with a shock of white hair and skin so tan it looked partially leathered. He’d instructed us to put our belongings in a locker at the surf shop, change into wetsuits, and head outside to meet some guy named…

“Who’s our instructor?” I asked.

The older man propped a medium-sized board against the stucco wall and tilted his scruffy chin. “Well, you two lucked out. Cal is gonna take care of you. And mind you, he’s the best there is.”

I squinted at the figure walking toward us on the sand. I couldn’t see much at that distance, but I could tell he was tall and fit with a swimmer’s lean physique under his wetsuit. And his longish dark-blond hair curled around his ears enticingly. There was something purposeful yet cocky in his stride. I didn’t know jack about this guy, but I could tell he wore confidence like a second skin. And let’s be real, confidence is sexy.

Zoe nudged my elbow. “Mmhmm. I’m suddenly very happy I let you talk me into this,” she hummed in a low voice.

I chuckled as Zoe’s smile lit her face. She was a petite Latina who did everything big. Her dark hair was super long, her brown eyes were huge, her lips were always painted red, and if she could have rocked her giant hoop earrings and a pair of stilettos on a surfboard, you bet your ass she’d have done it. The girl had a style all her own.
Out for the Holidays
A Dream Come True…
Derek-
This is it! I’m finally opening my own bistro. I’ve spent the last two years getting ready for this moment. I can’t decide if the holidays are the perfect time to begin a new venture, but I’m excited. It would be nice if my family were on board too.
Gabe-
I play water polo. I don’t know anything about the restaurant business, but I want to make sure Derek’s grand opening goes according to plan. I’ll rally our friends, send out invites, and yeah…I’ll even deal with his mother. He’s my number one person and I’ll do whatever it takes to be sure we’re out for the holidays.
Out for the Holidays is a low-angst MM romance featuring Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep…and a host of friends from the Out in College books!

Out for Gold
Chance of a Lifetime…
Gabe-
Winning a spot on the Olympic water polo team is my lifelong goal and guess what?...I made it! Of course, nothing goes smoothly. This is a bad time for a shoulder injury and an even worse time for my dad to show up out of the blue. I might be doomed.
Derek-
Family isn’t easy. Trust me, I know. But in my experience, ignoring obvious issues only makes them more challenging in the long run. I can’t solve Gabe’s problems with his dad, but I’ll help if I can. Win or lose, my man is going out for gold.
Out of Gold is a low-angst MM romance featuring Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep in a full-circle quest for the ultimate prize…love.
*OUT FOR THE HOLIDAYS was originally featured in the holiday collection, Gifts for the Season. Since the anthology is no longer available, I wanted to publish it on my own and add new content. OUT FOR GOLD is a brand-new novella that really brings the whole story full-circle. Both shorts feature Derek and Gabe from Out in the Deep.

Books in Series:

Out in College Series by Lane Hayes

Books by Author:

Lane Hayes

1

Derek

“I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me.”― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

The sound of clinking glass and rattling silverware might be heard under the cacophony of conversation and laughter. It might bounce off the bistro’s white-paneled walls, wood farm-style tables, and blue rattan café chairs. Soft jazz would be piped through the speakers. Or maybe holiday music. Fairy lights would twinkle merrily in the potted trees near the wide windows, lending a festive ambience to the inviting space that encouraged customers to settle in, order a ton of food and a bottle of wine or two, and just…enjoy.

Well, that was the dream, anyway.

The reality was an empty shell of a room with chipped tile flooring, cobwebs in every corner, and if I wasn’t mistaken, mouse droppings on the front door. Gabe followed my wandering gaze and made a “yuck” face as he snaked his arm around my waist.

“Look beyond the mouse shit, babe,” he advised. “This place is…charming. Kind of.”

Evan snorted. “I warned you it was a fixer-upper, Der. We, in the business, refer to this type of property as—”

“A money pit?” I intercepted.

Max chuckled. “I think he was going to say ‘opportunity.’ Am I right, boss?”

Evan held his hand out for a high five. “This guy’s going places. That’s exactly right. You know what they say. Location, location, location. It’s the damn truth. And you’re not going to find a better location for your bistro. You need to be on 2nd Street. The next-best option is a block away. But that block could cost you customers. Visibility is important. I know this place is nothing to look at right now, but it’s got potential.”

I stepped toward the huge picture window. There was plenty of space under the ripped awning for outdoor seating in warm weather. Evan was right about the location. The foot traffic alone in this section of town was worth the high rent. I just didn’t know if Gabe and I could afford it.

“The ceiling is kinda cool,” Gabe commented idly.

I glanced up on cue at the painted tin tiles, then studied my boyfriend and our companions.

They were a damn fine-looking trio. Tall, dark, handsome, and athletic too. My best friend, Evan, was a former football player turned real estate agent. He’d lost a bit of his bulk since graduation a couple of years ago, but he was still muscular. Max, his coworker, was a former baseball player at Evan’s alma mater. When Max started working for Evan’s firm four months ago, Evan volunteered to train him. Max was gregarious like Evan…a trait that would no doubt serve him well in sales. He was also extremely hot.

But not as hot as Gabe. My boyfriend was six three with dark hair, hazel eyes, broad shoulders, a tapered waist, and the most beautiful smile I’d ever seen. Gabe was an Olympic-caliber water polo player. No joke. He was slated to go to Tokyo next summer to play with the US water polo team in the Olympics. In the meantime, he coached two club teams and assisted our old coach at Long Beach State. And as soon as we agreed on a location, he’d be the proud co-owner of Bonne Terre.

Okay, so opening a French-bistro-slash-coffee-shop was my dream, not Gabe’s—however, he’d been my number one supporter for over three years. He was my partner in life and in business. Kind of funny considering how much I hated him when we played water polo in college. Life had definitely changed over the past few years.

I wondered whether I would have gone to culinary school if it hadn’t been for Gabe’s encouragement. He had passionate views about doing whatever made you happy. And though a job at my dad’s company would have paid a great salary right from the start, I would have been miserable. Of course, my parents were sure I’d be miserable once I realized I’d signed on to be a glorified waiter for the rest of my life.

Not true. But even if it was, I loved the art, craft, and science of food. And I wanted to share what I’d learned with others. If that meant cooking and serving every meal myself, I’d do it. Well, okay…I couldn’t do it alone. But with Gabe by my side, I felt like anything was possible.

But damn, this place was a mess. Maybe I was in over my head.

“Dude. Stop tormenting yourself. This is doable,” Evan chided, playfully nudging my elbow.

I sighed. “Yeah, but it’s a lot of work. It’ll take at least two months to get this place in order.”

“So what? It’s October now. You’ll be open for the holidays. How cool is that? I know a few guys from my old football team who’d pitch in for beer. And you know Mitch would be happy to help with marketing,” Evan said. “Chelsea will want to help with designer stuff.”
The grad student, the jock, and some winter fun…

Drew
My new job at the bistro is fun. The owners are good guys, and the staff is made up primarily of boisterous water polo players. I know nothing about the sport except there’s a Speedo involved, and Liam likes to wear his everywhere. Yes…Liam—the chatty, handsome, utterly charming waiter I can’t seem to stop thinking about. Ugh. Note to self—do not fall for another younger man.

Liam
Getting Drew to notice me hasn’t been easy. He’s a little intense, and he knows how to keep his distance. Something tells me he’s not immune—he’s just stubborn. Maybe a weekend of bonding on the ski slopes will win him over. And if I can get him to come out in winter, I might be able to convince him that we have a chance at something special.

***Out in Winter is a low-angst MM, bisexual romance starring an oh so serious grad student, a goofball water polo player, and a little winter magic. This story is part of the Out in College series, but each book can be read as a stand-alone.

Books in Series:

Out in College Series by Lane Hayes

Books by Author:

Lane Hayes

1

Drew

“If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”—Percy Bysshe Shelley, Ode to the West Wind

The sound of clinking glass and rattling silverware echoed in the empty bistro, bouncing off the white-paneled walls, wood farm-style tables, and blue rattan café chairs. Soft conversation hummed from the kitchen. No doubt the owner was consulting with the chef about today’s specials while the morning crew filled the pastry shelves with fresh-out-of-the-oven croissants, brioche buns, and other savory treats. The doors wouldn’t open for the pastry and breakfast crowd for another twenty minutes, but we’d be more than ready.

Well, everyone else would be. I was freaking exhausted.

Months of balancing two jobs plus graduate school had finally caught up to me. The holidays were over, and the café was up and running with a great staff. In a couple of months, I’d be able to give notice at the bar. But now was the perfect time to plan a getaway. The owners, Derek and Gabe, said they’d take over my managerial duties; I just had to be sure we had enough hands on deck. Which translated to wrangling schedules from a dozen water polo players.

Confession. I’d had no idea what water polo was till recently. I wasn’t a total idiot. I knew there was a Speedo, a ball, and a weird-looking cap involved. However, I’d never seen the sport in action. I’d had no clue what the rules were and, to be honest, zero interest in learning….until Derek hired me to manage his bistro and informed me that the posse of new hires would primarily be college-students-slash-water-polo-players.

They were freaking gods and goddesses. No joke. I’d never seen so many tall, toned, and effortlessly beautiful people in one place in my life. For the most part, they were a cool group who’d been hand-picked by Derek’s boyfriend, Gabe.

Derek and Gabe met through the sport and had played together at Long Beach. After graduation, Derek went to culinary school and recently opened a bistro while Gabe trained with the US team bound for the Olympics this summer. He was also the assistant coach at the university and could personally vouch for those he’d suggested as new hires. As a whole, his instincts were on point.

Our servers were a dynamic, diverse, and fun group. Most were typical laid-back Cali beach-types, always ready with a smile and a “That’s awesome, dude.” But we had a few who were—

“Yo, dudes and dudettes. I have arrived! Let the morning shenanigans begin!”

Like Liam.

Loud, boisterous, and goofy as hell. And completely fucking adorable in the way gigantic teddy bears were.

I glanced up from my spot at the counter and did a double take before bursting into laughter. “What are you wearing?”

Liam held his arms open wide and glanced down at his odd ensemble as if it were a surprise to him too. He wore Ugg boots, a red-and-black striped scarf, an unzipped parka…oh yeah, and a Speedo.

“Not much,” he quipped.

“I see.” I was going for bored and unimpressed, but I didn’t quite succeed.

That tiny wisp of nylon and Lycra hugged his impressive package without being completely obscene. Impressive indeed—though I had to imagine a serious boner would have to jump ship to get some breathing room. If I weren’t technically his boss, I would have asked how a Speedo contained the average rogue erection. Or did that even happen? And why the fuck was I staring at his junk?

I averted my gaze and yawned, ready to blame exhaustion if he called me out for package-perving. Luckily, he didn’t notice. He’d turned to wave to his coworkers, wrapping forks and knives in white linen napkins at the bakery counter. It gave me a moment to discreetly admire him, and there was quite a bit to admire.

Liam was handsome. I mean…like, wow handsome. He had dark wavy hair, blue eyes, and sculpted features, like high cheekbones and a square jaw that almost always had a bit of scruff. He was an inch taller than my six two, but easily twice my size. He wasn’t heavy or anything—he was thick. He had a big, broad chest, wide shoulders, toned arms, and massive, muscular thighs. I’d always thought swimmers were lean, and most of the water polo players who worked here fit that description. Supposedly his size had something to do with the position he played. I think he told me what it was, but I forgot.

As good-looking and physically impressive as Liam was, his personality was what really stood out. He was…fun. He wore life lightly. He got along with everyone, and if he ran into a person or situation that bugged him, he addressed the issue and moved on. He was our most likable, easygoing employee, and I wasn’t immune.

I wanted to gripe at him for wasting my time with his grand entrance and maybe for being way too damn cheerful before six in the fucking morning, but Liam made it hard to hold on to irritation for long. Like now…
Roommates to friends to lovers…
Elliot-
I need a roommate fast. Even a temporary one. Beggars can’t be choosers. Going pro after graduation has been intense, and time is precious. Thankfully, Braden seems cool. He’s a little quirky…and very sexy. Of course, I would never get involved with a roommate. That’s a bad idea. Isn’t it?
Braden-
Moving to Long Beach seems like a no brainer. It’ll be a perfect chance to wind down before grad school and a nice respite from my folks. Plus, my new roommate is a great guy. A little messy, but sweet. Gotta admit, I like him more than I should. And we’re off to a strange start when a mutual friend hooks me up with his ex. Elliot’s the one I want, but going from friends to lovers is a risk. We could end up out on the serve…or we could win it all.
****Out on the Serve is a low-angst MM, bisexual romance starring two roommates, one neat, one messy, beach volleyball, a lot of sand, and a little summer fun. This story is part of the Out in College series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Books in Series:

Out in College Series by Lane Hayes

Books by Author:

Lane Hayes

1

Elliot

“Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think.”—L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

Rain pelted against the sliding glass window, and the wind whistled through the tiny crack where the front door was propped open by a single red flip-flop. Three neatly stacked boxes and two giant suitcases blocked the path to the living area. Hushed conversation drifted from the bedroom. The words weren’t clear, but there was an unmistakable note of urgency in the high-pitched voices that communicated a desire to move quickly. I was in complete favor of that. I hated moving.

Thankfully, I didn’t have much to do here. My main chore was to schlep a few boxes and meet a potential roommate. According to Sophie, I was going to love this guy. Her extra intonation on the L-word made me wary, but Soph was a theater girl. Everything with her was a little “extra.” Including her exit. She brought my ex-girlfriend with her “to help her pack.” Anna and I were cool, but geez, this felt like the longest day ever.

I stuck my hands into my pockets and strained to listen for a hint that they were almost ready.

“Hey, Soph. How’s it going?”

“Good. We’re packing up the last bits in the closet. Braden should be here any minute,” she called from the bedroom.

Any minute could mean twenty with Sophie. Plenty of time to make a sandwich. I skirted the kitchen island and opened the refrigerator, staring at the mostly bare shelves before pulling out a package of cheddar cheese and a stick of butter. Grilled cheese was easy. And it was comfort food. Not that I needed comforting. I didn’t. This situation was just…awkward.

Knock, knock.

“Hello?” a masculine voice called.

I set the cheese and butter on the counter just as Sophie and Anna appeared carrying a couple of overstuffed tote bags and a ruffled pink-and-yellow duvet between them. They could have easily passed for sisters. Both were on the petite side with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Sophie was an inch or two taller than Anna, and she was uber vivacious—the type of person who woke up singing musicals, cleaned incessantly, and laughed at all my dumb jokes.

We’d been good friends since freshman year when I tripped over a keg at a party and almost knocked her over. I caught her before she fell into the hedge, but her heel came off and I think I ripped her shirt too. I was a big dude—however, I wasn’t usually that clumsy. I’d braced myself for her to go apeshit crazy on me, but she laughed and started reciting Shakespeare. “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” I only knew that because she spent the rest of the evening telling me about her plans to become an actress of the stage and cinema. According to her, my lack of appreciation for the arts was the reason we were never more than friends. The other reason was Anna.

Sophie dropped a bag on the floor, squeezing my arm on her way to greet the new guy as Anna sidled up next to me. She tore off a strip of cheddar cheese and popped it into her mouth.

“Hi, El.”

I smacked her hand playfully, then offered her another piece. “What do you know about this guy? On a scale from one to ten, how big of a theater geek is he?”

Anna chuckled. “I think a six, but don’t quote me. Sophie told me you know him.”

“What? How?”

She made a zipped-lip motion and winked. “She wants to surprise you.”

“I hate surprises.”

“Liar,” she huffed, inclining her head toward the new arrival. “He’s tall.”

Anna’s eyes sparked with ready humor as she set her tiny hand over mine. Was it wrong to say I still thought she had the most beautiful smile I’d ever seen?

Anna and I were together for three years. We met in English Lit during our sophomore year and were inseparable until our breakup last May. It had been tough on both of us, but I was the one who’d initiated it, and the guilt still haunted me. I didn’t necessarily regret my decision. I loved Anna—just not the way I thought you were supposed to love the person who said they wanted to be with you forever.

I glanced at Sophie and the new guy, noting his lean, muscular physique. His back was turned to me, so I couldn’t see his features. I was tempted to ask Anna if she could tell if he was cute, but I wasn’t sure our relationship was quite there yet. I hooked my arm around her petite shoulders and gave her a playful hug.

“He’s big, but I’m bigger,” I joked.

Anna nodded. “He’s a volleyball dude.”

I furrowed my brow and squinted like an owl. “Really?”

“Don’t ask. I don’t know anything else. Come on. Let’s go meet the mystery man.” She laced her fingers with mine and pulled me toward the sound of Sophie’s friendly chatter.
The jock, the nerd, and a little spring fever…
Ned-I don’t understand hockey at all. Or any sport. Attending a team party with my best friend might be a mistake.
As an out and proud geek, I admit that hanging out with a bunch of jocks and their admirers isn’t my idea of fun, but getting kidnapped by a sexy hockey player who claims to have a crush on me is definitely a highlight.
And finding out that Logan St. James is bisexual makes everything more interesting.Logan-Keeping my big bi secret hasn’t been easy. I have a couple of months of college left and one more game to play.
I’m determined to make the most of it and spend as much time as possible with the sexy guy I’ve had a crush on since freshman year. I don’t want this to be over. There must be a way to come out in spring.
***Out in Spring is a low-angst MM, bisexual awakening staring a hunky hockey player, a sweet-natured geek, and a little college fun. This story is part of the Out in College series, but each book can be read as a stand-alone.

1

Ned

“The true nature of the human heart is as whimsical as spring weather.”—Maya Angelou, The Collected Autobiographies of Maya Angelou

Loud music vibrated through the speakers, making conversation difficult. Not that anyone seemed to mind. People were yelling at each other in the kitchen over the din of a jungle beat, dancing in the living room, and making out…everywhere. Apparently, this was normal behavior at a college party. Gee, I’ve been missing out. Not.

I quickly averted my gaze from the attractive couple sucking face against the staircase railing and bumped Kendra’s shoulder.

“How long do I have to stay?”

She scowled as she pushed her glasses up her nose. “We’ve only been here fifteen minutes, Ned. You promised to keep an open mind.”

“Yes, but the germ quotient is a bit high for me, and I can’t hear myself think. Who are we looking for again?”

“Troy. He’s the goalie, and he’s so cute. I used to have a crush on his friend, Logan. But he was taken until recently. Rumor has it, he broke up with his girlfriend before the holidays,” Kendra whispered loudly into my ear.

It probably wouldn’t have mattered if she’d yelled. We were invisible here—this was a gathering of hockey players and their admirers. I supposed Kendra fit the latter group. And I didn’t get it. At all. My best friend was on a quest to lose her virginity, and she had her mind set on a hockey jock. Go figure. When she went on ad nauseam about their boundless energy, strength, determination, and enthusiasm, I suggested she consider rescuing a golden retriever instead. They were sweet and they actually got excited when you walked into a room. No one here had given us a second glance. Fine by me—I preferred it that way. However, Kendra was here to score.

I had my misgivings. This really didn’t strike me as an ideal environment to procure a beau. I eyed the massive musclebound dude blocking the view into the living area. He laughed at something one of his friends said, then chugged the remnants of his beer before crunching the can in his meaty paw. Ew.

“Please tell me that guy isn’t the goalie,” I pleaded, reaching for a Coke.

“No, that’s Mason. He’s one of their D-men. That’s slang for defenseman. They’re also called blue-liners because their job is to keep the puck in the zone.”

“What does any of that mean?”

“I have no idea. I just googled it. Troy likes to talk defensive strategies with his friends. I’m trying to learn more, so I can have an actual conversation with him about something besides Colby and Sky.”

“Got it. When are they supposed to be here?” I snuck a peek at my watch as I pulled the tab on the soda can.

“Any second now.” Kendra snatched the Coke from me and poured my drink into a red Solo cup. She handed it over with a meaningful look as she pushed her glasses on the bridge of her nose. “Nothing says geek like drinking the mixers at a kegger.”

“No one here is watching me, Kenny. And I’m leaving as soon as your friends arrive anyway, remember? You said you needed me for transportation purposes only. I didn’t think I’d actually set foot in this place. You know I’ve never been to a frat party. If I’d known you’d drag me inside, I would have researched proper attire,” I huffed, glancing down at my oxford shirt and khakis.

“It’s not a frat party. It’s a hockey party. They’re similar in some ways…lots of booze and gorgeous girls fawning over hunky boys. And vice versa. The difference is that these guys are the real deal. They all play for Long Beach. And they’re nearing the end of their season, so this is my last chance to—you know…”

“Fuck a hockey player,” I finished for her.

“Shh!” She smacked my arm lightly before darting her gaze around the crowded kitchen. “I know it’s ridiculous. These girls are so…pretty. I’m out of my league.”

“Hey, don’t say that. You’re beautiful. If I didn’t have a crush on Henry Blackman, I’d ask you out.”

“Henry’s straight, Ned.”

I sighed dramatically. “I know.”

“Hmm. I guess we’re both hopeless cases. Always attracted to the guys who don’t notice us.”

I wasn’t going to waste my breath arguing. She was right. My mild infatuation with my coworker was pretty much on par with Kendra’s obsession with hockey players. Although in her case, I couldn’t understand why she didn’t attract the attention she craved. Kendra was very pretty. She had long dark hair, big brown eyes, and a lovely smile. She didn’t wear much makeup, and she dressed more conservatively than…well, any of the other girls here, but the right guy would see her properly and appreciate her intelligence too. She was a kind soul and a loyal friend. If I didn’t love dick, I’d think we were perfect for each other.
Colby Fischer is a bad boy with attitude and a chip on his shoulder. As a senior at a Southern California college, he knows this may be his last shot. He doubts he’ll ever become the hockey legend he dreamed of being as a kid, but he definitely doesn’t want to be an accountant. Things get interesting when he’s asked to train the new intern at his step-dad’s firm, who happens to be the troublemaker from his econ class. And the one guy Colby can’t stand.

Baseball is Sky Jameson’s life. He’s happy to be back at Chilton for his senior year, but he’s burned a few bridges and has a bit too much free time off-season. He could use the money and something to keep him busy until his season begins. But his accidental crush on his prickly coworker could be a problem. Colby is straight and Sky is in the closet. Their timing isn’t great, but the intense attraction is hard to deny. With his final season on the hockey team in the balance, Colby may have to decide if he’s ready to come out on the ice.
Byatt, Elementals: Stories of Fire and Ice

A single ray of light streaked across the empty desk next to the window, hinting at blue skies, warm temps, and plenty of sunshine on the other side of the blinds. Pretty much the kind of weather everyone expected on an average summer day in SoCal. There was something undeniably torturous about being stuck in a classroom on a beautiful morning in July. Summertime wasn’t supposed to be about school. It was reserved for fun stuff like body surfing, bike riding, and beach volleyball with your buddies. Or hanging out at the rink.

Anywhere but here.

Other than the perky brunette in the first row who talked my ear off about applying the principles of macroeconomics in virtual consumer bases on the first day of class, the other dozen or so students probably checked the time as often as I did. It wasn’t a lack of interest. It was just…summertime.

Truthfully, I kinda liked econ, and I was a pretty good at it. It took extra qualifications to be accepted into this advanced course; a recommendation from two professors and an internship. I got the recs okay, and I interned at my stepdad’s accounting firm. According to my mom, it was a brilliant move. I wasn’t so sure about that—I wanted to play hockey and make bank, not worry about someone else’s money.

The only person who seemed more miserable was the jock who arrived late every day and sat in the now-empty seat next to the window. I glanced from the door to my watch, knowing that any second now he’d barge in and—

“Welcome, Mr. Jameson. Nice of you to join us this morning,” the TA commented sarcastically.

“Sorry, I’m late,” he mumbled, rushing into the classroom.

“You’re just in time for the quiz. Wait. Don’t sit there. Maintenance is supposed to fix the leg on that desk. Take a seat next to Mr. Fischer.”

“Who’s Mr. Fischer?”

“Me.” I raised my hand, giving Jameson a harsh once-over.

I didn’t like the guy. Don’t ask me why. He was just too…perfect. Super handsome and full of himself. I’d never seen him on campus before this summer. And maybe I had a slightly suspicious nature, but I couldn’t help wondering what he was doing here. He looked a little out of place, more like a model than a student. No kidding. He could have been on a poster advertising the All-American athlete or an Abercrombie model with his dark-blond hair, blue eyes, broad shoulders, and a toned, muscular physique. Guys like him didn’t take high-level summer school econ classes. They hung out at the beach with other beautiful people racking up content for their Instagram pages. Not Sky Jameson, though. He was here in hell with the rest of us, looking suspiciously unruffled in a snug black tee and khaki shorts. Every girl in the room and a few of the guys checked him out as he made his way across the room and settled into the desk next to me. Myself included. And yeah, that was weird.

I didn’t think it was a gay or straight thing. It was—okay, fine. I didn’t know what it was. For three weeks, I’d been staring at the back of the guy’s head and noticing his biceps in those fitted T-shirts he wore and frankly, I was beginning to freak myself out. My fixation was odd. I thought about asking the pretty know-it-all in the front row for her number, hoping it would help me snap out of it. But when I stood up and brushed elbows with Sky, my mind went blank and I couldn’t remember what the hell I was supposed to be doing. It would have been a dick move. I didn’t want to mislead her or make her think I was interested. She already looked at me funny anyway.

Two and a half weeks of torture to go.

“It’s test time!” The TA, whose name I never remembered…Mr. Jackson or Jackman or Jackoff, handed a stack of papers to a redheaded dude in the front row and gestured for him to take one and pass it around. “I’ll give you thirty minutes to complete the quiz before we start a new chapter. We’ll go over the answers tomorrow. You may use your calculators, but be sure to show all your work and of course, keep your eyes on your own paper and…”

I tuned Mr. J out as I pulled my calculator and a pencil from my backpack. These quizzes weren’t usually difficult. A few multiple-choice questions followed by a detailed word problem or two involving statistics and some basic calculus. The trick was remembering to apply the correct formula. I scribbled a couple of notes, then flipped the paper over just as someone nudged my elbow.
Max Maldonado loves baseball. He knows playing first base at a private college probably won’t get him to the big leagues, but he doesn’t mind. He loves the game and his teammates. If he has to stay in the closet until he graduates, that’s okay. Baseball comes first. Relationships are complicated anyway. And after his recent messy breakup, Max prefers to keep things simple.

Phoenix Bell is a fabulous theater geek. He’s excited about his recent transfer to a new school with an elite liberal arts program. Life has been on hold for a while, but this opportunity feels like the fresh start he was hoping for when he moved to California. And the chance reunion with the hot closeted jock is an unexpected surprise. The two men have nothing in common and their timing couldn’t be worse. However, when their unconventional alliance blossoms into friendship and perhaps something more, it may be time to make some hard decisions. And perhaps risk it all...out in the field.
Blue skies turned an ominous gunmetal gray as a strong wind whistled through the campus. The normally bustling quad was a ghost town. Most students kept to the perimeters of the grassy areas under the eaves as they made their way to class. The smarter ones wore thick hoodies or at least carried an umbrella, while others held books or a backpack over their heads as they raced between buildings. Me? I was about to get soaked.

I tucked my American Studies notebook and my iPad under my long-sleeved T-shirt as I eyed the distance to the parking lot. There was no way I’d make it to my car without getting wet. I didn’t care about my clothes or my hair, but I’d be screwed if anything happened to my stuff. I heaved a frustrated sigh before ducking my head and making a run for it. Halfway to my destination, someone bumped into me, accidentally dislodging my notebook. I headed for cover to adjust my burden, shaking my head and swiping at my eyes before glancing around the archway connecting the math lab and Granding Theater.

I could safely say I’d never had an occasion to go inside either building. I’d made an effort to steer clear of subjects that confused me, and math and drama were near the top of that list. Math, for obvious reasons, and drama because theater people intimidated the hell out of me. Maybe that sounded silly, but I couldn’t decide if I was in awe of their bravery or if I thought they were flat-out crazy to want to perform in front of a crowd for fun. What did I know? I was a psych major. But first and foremost, I was a baseball player.

At a private college like Chilton, athletics usually took a back seat to scholastics. But our baseball team rocked. We’d won our conference championship title for the past three years straight. And though our season had just begun last week, our chances of a four-peat were looking good. Not great, but good.

I cast my gaze to the dark sky and grumbled unhappily. We couldn’t practice in these conditions. No doubt Coach Glenn would have us meet at the gym on campus instead of on the field today. I’d check my messages when I got to my car. I had forty-five minutes to head home, grab a bite to eat, and pick up my workout bag. Plenty of time, I mused as I stepped away from the wall and—froze at the sight of fairies dancing in the rain.

For real. I couldn’t make it up if I tried. The three young women and one guy wore tights and some kind of weird costume involving glittering leaves sewn over green leotards. They held hands as they pranced around the grassy area in front of the theater, with their faces turned to the heavens. Very strange. Any other day of the week, I would have rolled my eyes and walked the other way…fast, because like I said, theater people freaked me out. And the diehard ones who were so dedicated to their craft, they were willing to risk pneumonia on a day like today had to be slightly imbalanced. But the guy looked kinda familiar.

He had short platinum-blond hair and the physique of a dancer or a gymnast. His calf muscles looked like sculpted marble in those skin-colored tights. He was hot too…high cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and a stunning smile. Theater geeks aren’t my type, I reminded myself as I straightened from the wall.

I was about to head to the parking lot when the platinum cutie broke away from his friends and skipped to a nearby tree. Yes…skipped. He brushed his palms against his thighs and called out “Ready?” before doing a series of cartwheels and landing two feet away from me. He bowed dramatically and lifted his arms above his head, circling his hands as if encouraging applause. I tucked my iPad under my arm and clapped along with his friends ’cause let’s be honest, sticking a perfect cartwheel in the rain couldn’t be easy. He flashed a flirty grin over his shoulder, then stepped forward and fell flat on his face.

I raced to his side unthinking and crouched low. ““Hey, you okay? Let me help you up.”

“Thanks.”

I tucked my belongings to my chest, then reached for his elbow and pulled him upright. I led him to shelter under the eaves before attempting to see if he’d hurt himself. Not the correct procedure, I know. But I couldn’t afford to have my iPad crap out on me because of exposure to the elements. And he seemed all right. In fact, he was more concerned about the rip in his tights than the scratch along his forearm.
Christian Rafferty is a talented quarterback with a big secret. He’s determined to make the most of his final season on the football field, and if possible, avoid any confrontations with his conservative parents about his future. It shouldn’t be difficult; he’s become adept at keeping his public and private lives separate. However, when a math class threatens to derail his plans to graduate on time, he realizes he may need outside help.

Rory Kirkland has a reputation for being a tough guy. He’s a former wrestler and recent college graduate who needs a real job. Until he finds one, tutoring is a decent temporary gig. Luckily, his brain is his biggest asset. Rory is a genius. He credits his sport for helping him deal with angst and rumors about his sexuality when he was younger, but he doesn’t care what others think anymore. He likes his new status as an out and proud bi man; and he recognizes something of himself in Christian. But Rory didn’t count on falling for him. When an unlikely friendship collides with intense attraction, both men begin to realize that coming out on offense just might be the surest path to love.

Books in Series:

Out in College Series by Lane Hayes

Books by Author:

Lane Hayes Books

1

“You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him find it within himself.”—Galileo

The late afternoon sun glinted off the bleachers and sent a prism of light across the Astroturf. The ultra-green hue gleamed even brighter than usual at this time of day and contrasted nicely with the longer shadows. It might be eighty degrees in the shade still, but fall was definitely coming. We were a few weeks into the new school semester and three games into our football season. Thankfully, we’d won by respectable margins. A minor miracle, considering a slew of our better players graduated last spring. Starting over with a mostly unseasoned crew wasn’t optimal, but so far, things were looking good.

Which usually meant bad news was on the horizon.

Hey, I wasn’t a downer. If anything, I considered myself a realist. Nothing good lasted forever—including winning streaks. I signaled a play to Gonzalez, one of the faster running backs on our team, then pulled my arm back and launched the football into the air in a high, tight spiral. It sailed in a perfect arc for sixty yards and hit my target right in his hands. Gonzalez secured the ball and ran like the wind toward the end zone.

I laughed when he let out a loud whoop and broke into a ridiculous victory dance. A few of the other guys joined in, but the second our head coach, Flannigan, blew his whistle, everyone hustled off the field. I waved absently to a couple of the assistant coaches chatting on the sideline as I jogged toward the locker room and then groaned when Coach Perez stepped aside and motioned me over.

Mike Perez was our offensive coordinator and an all-around good guy. But the dude could talk, and it had already been a long day. The last thing I wanted to do was go over additional plays. Surely it could wait until morning.

“Yo, Rafferty!”

I veered left to meet him and pulled off my helmet. “What’s up, Coach?”

Perez was a husky man in his late thirties with jet-black hair and a receding hairline he hid with a ubiquitous baseball cap. He was about five inches shorter than my six four with a completely different build. He looked more like a linebacker now than a former quarterback, but twenty years ago, he’d played my position at a private college similar to Chilton. He knew the ins and outs of a Division-Three program at a school better known for academics than athletics. I respected his football acumen, but I liked him as a person too. He was quick to laugh and had a habit of talking about his wife and kids that was kind of endearing. I thought it was cool that as much as he loved the game, his family always came first.

“That arm’s looking good, man. How are you feeling?” he asked, adjusting the rim of his cap.

“Great.” I squinted and gave him a funny look. “Don’t tell me you’re adding a complicated play I need to perfect in two days.”

“Nah.” He nodded at a couple of guys passing by and then inched closer to me in a maneuver that clearly indicated this was a private conversation. “I like what we’ve got down.”

“Oookay…” I wracked my brain, wondering what I’d done wrong while I waited for him to continue. Practice went well today. My arm was strong, my decision-making was on point, my feet were sure and—

“Your academic advisor called today. Mrs. Landau.”

“Oh.” Fuck.

He tilted his head in what could only be described as a “concerned parental” look before continuing in a lower tone. “She said you’re failing statistics. She also mentioned this is the second time you’ve taken the course and because you’re a senior, it’s your last chance to pass if you’re gonna graduate on time. Apparently, she’s contacted you about tutoring but you either haven’t acted on it, or you’ve ignored her messages entirely. Why?”

I let out a frustrated huff and pushed my hand through my hair. “It’s the middle of September. There’s plenty of time to—”

“To do the right thing,” he intercepted. “It’s a two-part course. You can’t afford to fail, man. One of the perks of being a student athlete is having immediate access to first-rate tutoring. You have to sign up, Rafferty.”

I frowned but nodded my acquiescence. “Okay. I will.”

“Good. I need proof it’s done before I put you in the game Saturday.”

“Wait. What?” I pulled at the sleeve of his burgundy polo shirt and tried to ignore my suddenly accelerated heartbeat.

Coach glanced down at his sleeve until I released my hold, then glowered at me. “What’s the problem? I’m covering my ass while you do yourself a favor and get the help you need. It’s a win-win, see?”

“Right,” I replied automatically.

I scratched the back of my neck and grimaced. Fuck. I knew it. Wasn’t I just thinking something would blow up any second? There had to be a way around this. Maybe I knew someone who could help me. One of the guys on the team might know statistics. I did a mental roll call of my teammates while my coach fixed me with a laser-beam, no-bullshit gaze.
Gabe Chadwick has big Olympic dreams. His transfer between Southern California universities has nothing to do with scholastics. The degree is his backup plan. He’s not there to party or make friends. And he certainly isn’t going to announce his sexuality. But he can’t deny there’s something special about the uptight team captain. However, when an unwitting friendship and mutual attraction collide, both will have to decide if this is the real thing or if they’re about to lose it all in the deep.
The stands were sparsely populated at this hour. An eight a.m. Saturday game was a tough sell for most people in the summer, especially for a glorified scrimmage. There should have been a rule stating that all non-crucial collegiate events were banned until after noon in the summertime. Or maybe year-round. I glanced at our crosstown rivals at the opposite end of the pool, lined up on either side of the goal.

Water polo was an insular sport with a strong presence in coastal communities like Southern California. Chances were good that if you’d played in high school and college, you knew the competition well. I recognized the Panthers’ goalie first. Jake was a fifth-year senior like me. We’d been friends since high school. He was six foot five with a wingspan that rivaled a professional basketball player’s. My gaze wandered to Mike Hoskins, on Jake’s left. He was a big partier. I bet he was out late last night and no doubt, he had a hangover. Not a morning threat, I mused. Tim Berkus was slow to start, but he ramped up quickly and—oh, fuck. I forgot about Gabe Chadwick. I fucking hated that guy. I wasn’t a fan of anyone who believed they were God’s gift to humanity. So what if he was tall, dark, good-looking, smart, and a world-class athlete? Gabe was still a dick if you asked me.

And it looked like I was guarding him this morning. Great.

Adrenaline rushed through me when the ref blew his whistle, signaling the start of the game. I checked the tie on my cap, then swam into position and waited to see who won the sprint. Us. I moved closer to the net on the far right side and waved my hand. The second the ball was passed to me, I threw a cross-cage skip shot and scored just before Gabe reached over, pulling me under in a blatant attempt to drown me.

Okay, fine. That was a slight exaggeration. But only a slight one. Gabe yanked me sideways and then pushed me under. It was excessive force and as I held my breath and stared at his enviable six-pack underwater, I figured it was a matter of seconds before the ref called a foul. I popped back up when I realized I wasn’t going to get the call and retaliated by kicking Gabe in the stomach, then swimming partially over him before getting into position on defense.

Like any other sport, the main objective in water polo was to score. The team with the most points won. In that way it was a lot like basketball or soccer. I’d been told that it looked much easier, which always made me laugh ’cause water polo was fucking vicious. Maybe it seemed like keep-away above water, but underneath it was like football. Anything was legal as long you didn’t get caught. The best players knew how to get away with murder. And Gabe was definitely one of the best.

A pissed-off Gabe meant trouble for me. By the third quarter, he was all over me. I’d been kicked in the ribs, the head, and scored on twice. But I somehow managed to hang in the game, jockeying and battling for position and making it difficult for Gabe to maneuver around me. Maybe it was inevitable that he’d lose his cool and “accidentally” kick me in the balls. He grazed my left nut. It didn’t actually hurt, but after getting the crap beaten out of me nonstop for thirty minutes while treading water, it was the last straw. Or maybe it was when he crawled over my back and taunted, “You fucking love having me on top of you, don’t you?” that I came unglued.

I dragged him under and kicked him in the gut. Hard. The surprise factor worked in my favor…for five seconds, anyway. As soon as it wore off, Gabe came after me in his patented subtle way. He gouged my side, then flailed to the surface and put on a show for our meager audience. He should have won an award. His dramatic gasps for air and subsequent coughing fit sent a twitter of worry through the crowd. When he swam to the edge to gather himself and catch his breath, he received a round of applause. And me? I got kicked out of the game.

I was forced to endure the last quarter from the bench in disgrace. And to add insult to injury, we lost. Everyone was pissed…my coach, my teammates. But no one was angrier than me. I shouldn’t have let Gabe get under my skin. There was no excuse. I’d played this game for more than half my life. I knew better than to let an opponent inside my head.
Evan di Angelo is an upbeat, good-natured goofball who loves his friends and family… and football. A traumatic accident may have ended his hopes of playing professionally, but he’s made the most of his four years on the field at a small Southern California college. He’s learned the hard way to embrace change, take chances and try things outside of his comfort zone...like agreeing to play fake boyfriends for someone else’s senior project.

Mitch Peterson knows that being his authentic self is the path to true happiness. He’s grown from a shy, quiet kid from a broken home to an out and proud budding internet sensation bound for grad school. An awesome senior project is the key. It’s unlikely anyone will believe the hunky, straight athlete is Mitch’s new lover, but it’s worth a shot. However, as their tentative friendship blossoms into unexpected attraction, the lines between reality and fiction blur for both men. Evan is forced to face old demons and decide if he has the courage to take the next step and come out in the end zone.
The lights had been dimmed to evoke a club-like atmosphere. Partygoers danced on coffee tables and on the patio just outside the open sliding glass doors leading to the backyard. Others bopped to the beat and yelled to be heard above the din. Traversing the sea of inebriated twentysomethings to get to the kitchen would take time, patience, and maybe a raincoat to avoid accidental drink spillage, but it was better than listening to the same stupid stories I’d heard so often I could tell them myself. Why did I think this would be fun?

Oh, right. Because college parties were a blast, I mused sarcastically as my roommate’s ex-girlfriend swayed against my side.

I fake laughed on cue, then raised my red cup and signaled I needed more alcohol before making a not-so-stealthy escape. I didn’t check to see if I was being followed. I breathed a sigh of relief when I stepped into the kitchen and spotted Chelsea and Mitch.

Chelsea Ramirez was our hostess tonight. She was a petite Latina with a bohemian streak who loved a good time. She didn’t think twice about having a hundred people over every other weekend. I met Chelsea through my best friend, Derek, during our sophomore year of college. I’d just switched schools to play football at a small private university in nearby Orange, but I’d made lifelong friends at Long Beach State, like Derek and Chels. I had good friends at Chilton College too—but not like these guys. I didn’t mind the sometimes wicked freeway commute. It was more important to me to be close to people who felt like family.

I tapped my empty red cup to Chelsea’s, then turned to greet Mitch with a smile that probably looked a tad too enthusiastic. “Hi, there. How’s it goin’?” I asked awkwardly.

“It’s going well, thank you.” He looked amused at my sudden ineptitude. With good reason.

I was a total dweeb around Mitch Peterson.

We met through Chelsea a few years ago, but since we usually only saw each other at parties like this one with a gazillion people around us, I didn’t know him well. Truthfully, the guy kind of intimidated me. He had bright blue eyes, short dark-blond hair, and a commanding presence that made him appear taller than he was. I pegged him at five eleven, at least three inches shorter than my own six two. And he was much leaner. No joke, I could bench press him with one hand tied behind my back.

According to Chels, Mitch was a cultural and fashion trendsetter and an active member of a prominent on-campus LGBTQ group. And maybe a cheer captain too? I couldn’t remember. He was one of those uber go-getters. You know the type. A 4.0 student, president of multiple clubs…oh yeah, and a budding YouTube star too. I felt like a slacker in comparison. My grades were decent but after football, my main pastime was hanging out with my friends. No doubt he thought I was a dumb jock.

“Hiding in the kitchen at your own party? You’re slipping, Chels,” I chided playfully.

Chelsea tossed her dark hair over her shoulder, then rolled her eyes. “Don’t go starting rumors, Evan. I have a dilemma, but I’m three kamikazes and two tequila shots into the night, so I’m seeking guidance from my more sober friend ’cause I josh dunno what to do,” she slurred.

Uh oh. She was drunk. I supposed that made sense. It was sometime after midnight on a beautiful summer evening in Southern California and the last weekend before school started. A perfect occasion for a party, if one was needed. And Chelsea usually didn’t require much persuasion to let loose and have fun. Mitch seemed relatively sober, though I had spotted him dancing on the coffee table with Chelsea when Derek and I first arrived a couple of hours ago.

“What’s the problem?” I asked, setting my cup on the counter and reaching for a water bottle.

Mitch shot a guarded look my way. “Sex is happening in her roomie’s room.”

“Like right this second?” I furrowed my brow and gestured in the general direction of the bedrooms.

“Yup. Rachel doesn’t know her room is being used for a slam pad, and Chelsea is having a moment. The way I see it, she has two options.” Mitch set a hand on his hip and began a theatrical countdown on the fingers of his free hand. “Option one, she commits coitus interruptus and an embarrassing moment occurs, complete with nudity, animal sounds, and possible screaming. Two, she lets them wrap it up and then kicks their asses to the curb. Which would you choose, Evan? Door number one or door number two?”

“Uh…I need a little clarification before I answer. Animal sounds and screaming? What the fuck are they doing, and who is it? Anyone I know?”
