But people make mistakes, and when I screw up, it's epic.
I never expected the jerk would actually be a well-respected member of Club Verge. I never should have trusted the masked stranger when he beckoned me. I never should have taken him up on his offer.
And the biggest mistake of my life?
Letting him kiss me.
The fragrant aroma makes my stomach growl with hunger, which doesn’t even make logical sense because you don’t even eat coffee. “The separation of the classes in this city is just utterly maddening.”

“I agree, honey,” Chandra says, waddling over to me with a large sleeve of paper cups. Chandra’s hugely pregnant and ready to pop. We met in college a few years ago and became fast friends, so when my life imploded a few months ago, Chandra was the one who got me the job here at Books and Cups. Petite, with dark, coffee-colored skin and vibrant brown eyes, Chandra is beautiful. Pregnancy becomes her, as she’s grown pleasantly plump and fairly glows. Leaning against the counter, she rests a hand on the enormous bulge of her abdomen and giggles. “And apparently, the baby does, too.”

“Awww,” I say. “Is she kicking again?”

“He.” Axle’s growly voice comes from the doorway as he makes his way into the shop. Chandra and Axle haven’t figured out the sex of their baby, and it’s become a point of contention between us. I insist Chandra’s having a girl, mostly just to irk her husband, and Axle insists he’s having a son, mostly just to provoke Chandra. I really don’t care either way, but it’s fun to tease them.

“And what is the injustice we’re fighting today, Cora?” Axle bends down to brush a kiss to Chandra’s cheek, and I watch them with a sort of wistful hopefulness. They represent everything I want in life. After years apart from one another, they found each other again, overcoming so many obstacles to forge their way back into each other’s lives. Now they’re preparing to raise a family in the heart of the city. She adores the ground he walks on, and he dotes on her. She’s my friend, so I know it isn’t always sunshine and roses, and they have their moments like everyone else.

“The Greenery, Axle,” I tell him, my heartbeat accelerating as I take up my cause once more. “They want to pave over The Greenery because they’re building some other stupid high-rise. Because that’s what this city needs is another high-rise.”

“Who does?” he asks.

“Oh, who knows,” I tell him. I’ve only just begun research today, but as I’m studying investigative reporting at school, and I have a major paper on this subject due by the end of the month, I’ll do my research tonight.

After I finish my job at Books and Cups.

And make sure Ben and Bailey have done their homework and gone to bed.

And picked up some food at the twenty-four-hour supermarket on the way home.

After this, I’ve got a second job Chandra and Marla got me a few months ago, at Club Verge. Marla’s the bookstore owner and a long-term member of Club Verge. Chandra and Axle are members, too. At first, they were all hesitant to even talk to me about it, but there’s a reason I’m drawn to Marla’s bookstore. She stocks the largest selection of kinky romance in the city, and hell, I love those books.

So even though I’m not in the lifestyle… and I have no desire to be… I’m pretty open-minded. And hell, the other bartender, Travis, is cute and sweet.

My phone rings, and Chandra nods for me to take it when I show her the screen. We’re not supposed to talk on the phone when we’re on a shift, but bookstore owner Marla understands my circumstances are different. When I see it’s Bailey, I take the call.

“What is it?” I ask, turning my back to the counter and whispering into the phone. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah,” Bailey says. “I’m really sorry to bug you at work, Cora. I know you’re not supposed to take calls.”

“It’s okay,” I say quickly. “Why’d you call?”

“Yeah,” she says. “But I… well, I don’t know what to feed Ben for dinner.” She sighs.

I pinch the bridge of my nose with my thumb and index finger and lower my voice. I don’t like even my closest friends to know the reality of our situation. They all know I’m guardian to my two youngest siblings. That I fought the system and won, when my mother was put in jail for larceny and driving under the influence and my younger siblings were in danger of being tossed into the NYC foster care system. That I’m the one holding it together after she overdosed in prison and I’m left with two minors under my care. What they don’t know is that I barely make enough money to pay for the tiny apartment we live in. I need to stay in school if I’m ever going to get a better-paying job, and that means my jobs are limited.

Our cupboards are so bare, it makes me want to cry. Hell, I have cried. I’ve had nothing but a stale muffin all day long, and only because Marla was going to discard it because it wasn’t fresh anymore. I played it off like I was making an environmentally-conscious decision, and Marla might’ve bought it, but the truth was, we were totally out of food and I was starving. And now I feel guilty for eating a stupid stale muffin.

I walk toward my office, my mind a million miles away from here. I’m still not entirely sure why I took on this job in the first place. I feel weirdly out of place, and a part of me wonders if I’d have gotten this position if the powers that be knew anything about the last relationship I was in. Yeah, professors keep their private lives to themselves, and it’s not against the faculty rules for me to have a certain… proclivity… for younger women. But still.

How many professors here have girls they tie up or bend over their knees? How many are members of private, exclusive BDSM clubs?

How many like to be called daddy?

Ahead of me, I see a petite girl with chestnut-colored hair that hits right at her chin turn the corner, and for one brief moment, my pulse races. She looks just like… Could it be? But when she turns, I see she’s wearing glasses, and looks nothing like the girl I thought she was.

God, I miss Philippa. But she’s gone, and I am not gonna be one of those creeps who pursues his students.

I haven’t taught a creative writing class in years, but when I saw the job posted online, I decide to take a stab at it. I needed to do something to shake me out of the funk I’d been in since Philippa left. It was the most amicable break-up I’d ever gone through. A mutual agreement. She had to help her mother, and we had the kind of relationship that doesn’t work well long-distance. Still, a part of me longs to have that connection again. And even though I still stay in touch with Philippa, we’ve let ourselves fade to merely friends.

I was Philippa’s dom for six full months. Hell, I was more than her dom. I was her daddy.

We met at Club Verge, the most renowned kink club in all of NYC. I’m a long-term member. Not that I’ve gone back. And until Philippa, I’d only played at the club. Ours was my first relationship that took off outside club doors. The first relationship where I discovered my true self, how I thrived as a dominant giving real rules and accountability to another. Leading her to achieve success fulfilled a need in me.

We had an instant connection. She obeyed my rules, and I gave her structure, and we–

No. I won’t think about that anymore. We’ve moved past that, and now it’s time for me to move on.

So when I saw the little advertisement for a creative writing professor for the summer, I leapt at the opportunity. Hell, I figured maybe I could channel my need to nurture and guide in a more…wholesome way. And I found that I could. That throwing myself into being the best damn professor I could be helped me let go of the past and focus on the present. I might even be a little overboard, pretty married to this job. I do little more than work and hit the gym, and don’t have time for Club Verge anymore. I tell myself I’m too busy for a relationship, and that’s good enough.

I love my job. I have high expectations for my students. I don’t believe in coddling. It never served me well, and it won’t serve my students. I’m not their friend. I expect they come to class on time. I expect they do their work promptly and efficiently. And when they don’t, they answer to me.

I have a reputation for being a major hard-ass, and I like that I do. I don’t have time or patience for bullshit. I like to see my students reach their potential, thriving under my rigorous instruction.

Taking my place at the head of the classroom, I go down my attendance sheet and note the numbers as they come in the room. There are exactly nine people on my list, and exactly eight are here. When the clock strikes the very minute class begins, I lock the door and begin.

Maybe the ninth won’t show up. Or maybe the ninth will come late, and I’ll get a chance to live up to my reputation.

Giada

I glance at my calendar one final time.

Creative Writing Exploration. Professor Geoffrey Slade. Room 721, Dove building.

I inhale deeply, square my shoulders, and sling my bag onto my back. I’m making a major concession coming to school in the summer, the time of beach parties and sunbathing and cruises, but a long time ago, while he was still here… I made my father a promise. And it means something to me that I keep that promise, so here I am.

I purse my lips and open my bag, removing my sunglasses and sliding them on. The sun beats down hot and merciless, and I’m momentarily thankful I chose my tiniest sundress, a handmade beauty I picked up in Rome over Easter break, hunter green with spaghetti straps, a low vee in the front, hitting mid-thigh with delicate edged lace. I smile to myself. The nuns at Saint Augustine’s would have a conniption if they could see me now. But hey, I guess local community colleges have their benefits, and casual dress to class is one of them.
We broke it off and went our separate ways. I left the priesthood. She left her home.
Seven years later, she’s stranded in my NYC Club while a blizzard rages outside, and she wants a taste of dominance.
I won’t let another man lay eyes on her, much less touch her. She’s still my everything. My salvation.
And there’s no way I’m letting her go...

I shouldn’t be here. I don’t belong.

I considered some type of disguise coming here, but then I realized that anyone who would recognize me would be just as guilty as I am.

There’s a bouncer at the door, and a particularly strong gust of wind picks up just as he lets me in. I brace against the blast of cold, and he reaches for me, shielding me against the bitter blast of air and shutting the large black door behind me. It bangs with an audible click that makes me jump. Already, I’m out of my element. Men don’t touch me without permission.

But this is a BDSM club, and apparently no one plays by my rulebook. The one I was raised with. If I didn’t want someone to touch me, I wouldn’t be here.

“Name?” The man asks. He’s wearing a black t-shirt stretched tight over his muscled chest, stands well over six feet, and looks severe with a neatly-trimmed goatee and shaved head. He’s staring at a huge clipboard in his hand.

I blink and stare at him. Shit. I didn’t know I was supposed to give my name.

He looks up at me and raises a brow when a beat passes. I’m frozen. I can’t tell him who I am. And where the hell is Marla? My strategy to meet up with her definitely could’ve been improved.

But then again, she doesn’t know I don’t want anyone to know who I am.

“Chandra,” I whisper, hoping that’s enough. Does he need my last name, too? Because then I’m screwed. But he gives me a curious look, glances back down at his clipboard, and nods.

“Marla’s guest?” he asks.

At that moment, I hear a familiar squeal. “Chandra! You did it, girl! Come on in!”

Marla makes her way to me and the bouncer. “Master Geoffrey, this is my new employee. Her name is Chandra.” I smile at him and he shakes my hand, but then the door opens again, and two more people come in behind us. Marla grabs my hand and pulls me past the entryway door. There’s an office and what looks like a sitting room of sorts.

“If you come here with your dom, you can discuss your limits and things like that in this room,” Marla says.

My dom? I don’t have a dom.

“We have contracts and stuff like that. Over there is Master Tobias’ office.” She waves across the room to an open doorway, where a man sits at a desk typing on a computer. “He’s awesome, and you’ll love his wife Diana. In fact, you’re gonna love a lot of the people here,” she says with warmth. “I do.”

I nod dumbly when a couple walks through the door that leads to the club. I expected all leather and latex, but they’re dressed pretty normally. When they open a door from the room I’m in now, I hear music and voices, and I freeze. Once I step foot in there, there’s no going back. This is it.

But I can’t turn back now. I’ve been living and breathing everything I could get my hands on about the BDSM lifestyle for a full year, and I’m so ready to see what this is like.

“Let’s go,” Marla says, taking me by the hand and giving me a tug. She’s the least bashful person I know, and right now, I’m so grateful for that.

“There’s a bar,” she says. “Drinks are limited for safety reasons, but we can get you a good, stiff drink to start.”

I don’t tell her that I have literally never in my life touched alcohol. But tonight is a night of firsts.

“Sure,” I say quietly. She leads me to the bar. I’m trying to take in all the details, but it’s a little overwhelming, and I’m starting to feel that my too-tight black dress that I was so proud of for hitting my badass radar is really way too tame for a place like this. A woman walks past me wearing what looks like a purple leotard, complete with a tail and kitty ears. I must look wide-eyed and shocked, because Marla laughs and hands me a pretty pink drink. I take a sip. It’s delicious.

“Drink, honey,” she says. “You’ll be fine.”

“Got a friend with you tonight, Marla?” asks the man at the bar. He’s got a southern drawl and looks like he’s about my age, with sandy-brown hair and light brown eyes. He’s attractive, and seems sweet, so I take his hand and shake it.

“Chandra,” I tell him.

He smiles, revealing dimples on either side of his mouth. “Travis. Pleased to meet you, Chandra.” I say something barely coherent, but fortunately he’s already moving on to the the next person waiting for a drink. My mind is racing. This man’s a dom? Is he a sadist, too? Does he like to tie people up? Inflict pain? Does he have rules? I take another long pull from my drink.
