I was the trick that they could never play. She was the greatest game of all…
There is elegance that comes from being carved from the ashes of all the darkness that surrounds you in the world. You start as dust, and you end as dust. At least that’s what I always thought. Crowned Princess Mayhem all my life became old fast, and I found myself forging my iron crown with the blood of our enemies.

To The Brothers of Kiznitch, I was nothing but a little brat that always got my way. I was the sister none of them asked for, but they’d find themselves needing. He was no different. Loving Keaton Cicero was never going to be easy. There was evil within him that would never be accepted.

They thought their over-protectiveness had kept me safe all these years, but they were wrong. Everything they thought they knew… was about to burn around them. I wasn’t someone who needed protecting… They were.

Books in Series:

Midnight Mayhem Series by Amo Jones

Books by Author:

Amo Jones

Sixteen years old

I remember the first time I realized my brother was crazy. I was twelve years old, and I watched him rip the meat off a man’s bones after he kidnapped me and locked me in an abandoned house to play dress-up. The man was a stranger, and even though our family business was risky, it had no connection with Midnight Mayhem or Kiznitch. Yet my glorious brother tore him to pieces with his bare hands and didn’t blink once. Tonight is just like then, only worse. Worse because this is someone I know, and it’s someone who tried to hurt me.

Doors slam closed outside, and I stop pouring the cashmere pink bubbles into my bath. Reaching for my phone on the counter, I open Spotify and hit play on “OT” by Niykee Heaton before dipping my toe into the warm water. Bubbles spill onto the dark veined marble floors as I sink deeper beneath the water, closing my eyes in an attempt at scrubbing the night away. I don’t want Kyrin to hear me cry because I know it will only make him worse. I’ve handled this school since my parents dumped me in it when Kyrin threw a fit to keep me away from Mayhem, and I will continue to handle it when he goes back on the road. Right now, I need peace. I need to feel nothing. See nothing. Hear nothing. They say drowning is the most peaceful death, I can imagine why. After being suffocated from oxygen for minutes, you welcome the feeling of numbness. Like now. Void. Stuck between a realm of life and death, I could float and hold my breath until I simply… die.

A hand is around my throat, pulling me out of my haze and I swipe water from my face angrily when I resurface. “What the fuck!” As soon as my eyes open, they land on Keaton, one of the four Brothers of Kiznitch. He and my brother have been inseparable since they were born—they all are—but Keaton isn’t like the rest of them. He is simply… different.

My mouth closes as I take in his clothes. Blotches of blood litter his designer jeans, and when I finally look up at his face, I find mud and more blood all over his cheek and shirt. The Brothers of Kiznitch have all been my extended brothers, all of them except Keaton. He is nothing like a brother to me, and that’s largely because he has never treated me the same way the other Brothers have. He doesn’t seem pissed about my presence, but not that fond of it either. He has always just existed. For a long time anyway. But I don’t know if I’d call what we share a normal friendship. My stomach always twists anytime I catch him staring, and it’s become more frequent the older I get, but that doesn’t change the fact that we both fight. Fight probably more than any of the other brothers, Kyrin not included.

“What the fuck, Keaton?” I glare up at him while leaning back against the curve of the bath, flicking my toe against the faucet to turn the hot water back on.

I see him dip to a kneeling position out of the corner of my eye, when his fingers curl around my chin, forcing my face to his. I hold my breath when his eyes settle on mine. Keaton is the scariest of all The Brothers—to everyone but me. Darkness hovers over him everywhere he goes, and no matter what he does, he’ll never be rid of it. Torment swims beneath the surface of his god-like features, and it has always bothered me that I can never take it away. No one can.
Love will never die if it exists on the lips of death. I often thought about this while I was locked inside my Doll House in Patience. Groomed every second of every day, they made sure to cover all of the darkness lurking in my soul with the false guise of perfection. The soul is fickle. Naked to the public eye and only visible to the owner, a soul bleeds every time it’s put through pain. But when that’s hidden, it spreads. The trick is to protect it from reaching your brain.
It was too late for me. Until I met them. One was an Elite King.
One was a Brother of Kiznitch. Both were liars.
I’m Lilith Patience, The Sorcerer of Death and daughter of one of the most feared organizations known to man. After being thrust into the notorious world of Midnight Mayhem, I found myself coiled around a past that I want to forget and a future that could destroy me. I love two men, and they love me as much as they love each other, but when the demons of my past tighten their grip around my throat, will I finally let them strip away the layers of perfection to get to my rotten, withered soul? Maybe.
Or maybe they’ll die trying.
Washed up and fucking tired from traveling, I couldn’t walk past the sound. It was Cartier and the girl never fucking cried. She was tough as shit. When she was five years old, she put Keaton in a damn choke hold and knocked his ass clean out. So, despite the fact that I was about as fucking useful as a nun in a strip club when it came to hashing out girl feelings, I found myself backtracking and pushing open her bedroom door. It was after midnight, my head fucking ached. I wanted to sleep for three days straight before even considering opening my eyes.

My muscles tensed when I saw her curled up on top of the covers of her bed, her arms around her thin legs. “Kyrin, go away…” she whispered softly.

“Fuck that. What’s wrong?” I noticed a few things before she started talking. Like for one, she was in a little party dress made from that glittery shit girls like to wear.

“Nothing. Okay? Nothing.” Her voice trembled, her lips quivering.

Adrenaline started to pump through my veins when I realized she truly was fucked up over something. I walked in and kicked her door closed behind me. Her phone started going off from her desk, and before she could fly up from her bed to grab it, I snatched it.

“Unlock the phone, Chuckles…” Her nickname that I gave her when she was born flew out unintentionally. Apparently, I didn’t know how to say Cartier, so I called her Chuckles instead. It stuck. She hated it.

She shook her head, sitting up straighter in her bed. Her dress was ripped around the edges, her mascara leaking down her cheeks. I ground my teeth and grabbed her around the chin, raising the phone up to her face for recognition. “Ky, please. It’s okay.”

It unlocked and opened onto a message from her best friend.

Car, you have to tell someone about what happened tonight. Please? I’m here for you.

As I read the message, my blood began to boil. I felt the flames of anger burning through my veins. I looked up at Cartier, squeezing her phone in my hand.

I snarled at her. “Someone fucked with you tonight?”

Her lip trembled as she moved her blonde hair away from her face, swiping the smudged mascara under her eyes. I hated it because I’d been fighting my parents left and right to not let her come on tour. I didn’t want her in this. I wanted her to have a mundane life. We all did. Since she was the only girl out of us all, she had to answer to all of us, and what we said usually went. Though she fought us all with her bare teeth.

I took a deep breath and reached for my phone in my pocket. “Name?”

“Ky, I—”

“Name, Cartier!” She flinched, and I would feel like shit under other circumstances, but someone touched my fucking sister tonight and that shit didn’t fly with me. I fucking hated high school.

“Ben Jules.”

“Address?” I asked calmly.

She spewed off the address and I typed the details into the maps app on my phone. Other times, I would hit up one of The Brothers for backup, but I knew. I knew I wouldn’t need it tonight. “Tell me everything.”

“I-he-he and her, they gave me a drink. They gave me a drink, and I only woke when either of them was on top of me. She would laugh, with a recorder in her hand.” Her words barely made it out of her pain, and by this fucking point, rage was burning through my vision.

I couldn’t fucking see straight. “Do you know them?”

She shook her head. “No. They were just at the party I was at.” Her eyes drifted closed. “I shouldn’t have gone.”

I growled. “Cartier, you should be able to go to a fucking party without some grubs putting their hands on you without your permission.” This is one of the very aspects of life outside of Midnight Mayhem that I will never relate to. A woman can’t wear what the fuck she wants without being judged or touched.

“Ky, what are you going to do?”

“Don’t worry about that.” Once I hit the underground garage, I looked over the cars we had parked. I knew Dad took the Lambo in to get serviced, so I whacked the keys for the bike off the loop, swinging my leg over, not bothering with the helmet.

The party was over, from what I could see, but the lawn was riddled with Solo cups and empty kegs. “Fucking pigs.” I stepped over the litter and went straight for the front door. Kicking it open, I paused when I saw people scattered around asleep on the floor. Treading through the bodies, I searched all of their faces and looked between them and the photo on my phone. When I didn’t find Ben among any of the sleepy fuckwits on the bottom level, I made my way upstairs. I checked every bedroom—all empty, until I came to the last one.
Killian Cornellii was a walking calamity. He reached inside of me and touched every single inch of my ruined soul, but he didn’t just touch it. He caressed, petted, and captivated it. He tailored me to fit into the palm of his hands. The same hands that possess so much cruelty, were the very same that comforted me.
I thought I knew him. He thought he knew me. This isn’t a fairy tale, or some achingly beautiful story about two soul mates who instantly fall irrevocably in love with each other.
This is a story about a love so painful, so rich, that it destroys everything and everyone around it. Including ourselves.
Midnight Mayhem is the platform to which Killian performs his tricks on, but the greatest trick wouldn’t come from him. It would come from me.
I mean, I literally stood up in the center of the ring, made Ky hook up a video, flipped the camera the bird, and told every motherfucker while holding my junk, “Fuck you!” Now, I know what you’re thinking. How the fuck could you do this at the tender age of ten?

Well, I’ll tell you how. Ky is abnormally smart. I mean, textbooks couldn’t even figure out his shit—smart. We made the video, and then Ky hacked into some survey and uploaded the video.

It went live.

Spread through all news channels.

Across every single thing that was televising live during that very minute.

How’d I reach this point, you ask, well, a funny story… I mean, I could go back and tell you from the day I entered this world, but let’s be honest, no one, aside from my sex crazed best friends who like fucking her, wants a descriptive image of my mother’s vagina, so whatever. Long story that doesn’t have anything of importance short, I’m hard-wired to be this way. I was born human but crafted to be this.

Trickster.

The fucking Mayhem in Midnight. The motherfucker that would push all of your boundaries and make you feel good while doing it.

Speaking of Midnight Mayhem: Our family. Our unit. A bunch of fucked Romanians that are living the good life in America. I mean, shit, to be fair, we’ve all been living here since our parents moved over when we were young. Never found out why. Never asked.

“What are you doing?” King glares at me from across the booth.

I wave my hand up, grinning. “Listening to music. That cool with you?”

It was Christmas only a few weeks ago, and we all had a long enough break. Now we’re kicking off our new year with our first international show in Australia. Delila always has her reasons, whether we see them or not. It can be frustrating when she starts being cryptic, which is exactly what she has been lately.

I lean forward, lowering my voice so P doesn’t wake, but her mouth falls open slightly and a snore escapes. I smirk.

“Don’t say it, motherfucker. Leave her alone.”

My eyes fly up to King. “Fine, moody bastard. I was just going to—”

“—Killian, get to what you were going to ask me and leave her alone. She’s probably still tired as fuck from New Year’s Eve, which by the way… are we going to talk about that?” King’s attention shifts over my shoulder. I don’t have to look to know who he’s talking about.

My smile drops. “No. We don’t. As I was about to say before your sweet little angel distracted me with her snoring, have you asked Delila why we’re doing an international tour this year?”

We do international shows, but we do them every five years because of the time and cost that comes into it. We take on more staff and are away for fourteen months each time. Since the last one we did was two years ago, the fact that we’re already all abroad doesn’t sit right with me. The floor rocks softly, the imbalance a dead giveaway that we’re on The Cap aka—my family’s huge ass fucking cruise ship. We always take the ship over to kick off an international flight to give us time to practice, train, wind down a bit. If we take the 747, we all end up grumpy, tired, and only needing to train as soon as we get on land anyway. This way, we can take the majority of our equipment over with us. The Cap, named after my great, great something grandfather, is painted in sleek black with the words Midnight Mayhem written over the sides in lilac. It can be a bitch when it comes to customs and transfers for the road registration, but that’s where connections come in and a lot of powerful people owe us a shit ton of favors.

King shakes his head, picking up his glass of whiskey and throwing it back. “No. She’s more on edge than ever.” We’re currently kicking back in Yaam. The bar located on level one. Obviously, this isn’t like your usual cruise ship. There are no souvenir shops or cute little bakeries. There are two bars, one on this level and the other on the top deck near the pool. On the second level is where all of our bedrooms and storage compartments for the lighter loads are, where the heavier items—such as bikes, equipment, and all the others are tucked inside the basement.

“Yeah.” I run my hand through the strands of my hair, tugging on the ends slightly. “I’ve noticed that too.” Since Christmas Day, Delila has been more reserved and tense. None of us have seen this shift in her before, and it has put a spin on the dynamic that we live through. Delila is the type of woman that brings funerals to life, not sleep with the dead.
We are not a circus, we are not a carnival, and the only thing that you should be afraid of losing tonight, is your sanity…”

Thirteen years ago, I felt evil. It penetrated my flesh and imprinted its scent into my soul to create a haunting concoction of poison, also known as The Shadow. I would further use this scent to draw out other evil because The Shadow was the worst of the worst. He wasn’t just dark or evil; he was deranged. There was no good in his soul, no droplets of light. He tormented me. Everywhere I turned, he was there to make sure I knew that I’d never be free.

In every dark corner, he would be there. Watching me, waiting. For what? I never knew. But I was about to find out…

Dove Noctem Hendry. Cheer captain and most popular girl at Charlston Academy, apparently. People were astounded that I became so popular so quickly in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, even as a small child. We moved here when I was just short of eleven, right after—the incident. The incident was something we didn’t talk about. I mean, my parents and highly paid shrinks could only bring it down to me suffering from PTSD and suppressed memory. It’s all I’d known, which was not much at all. But according to this yearbook, I was the most popular girl at school and a modern-day ballerina. Yearbooks are weird. Like, hey! Here’s a reminder of what might have been the worst years of your life. Mine weren’t bad; they were actually pretty great. I just didn’t like reminders in general.

A knock on the door pulled me out of nostalgia. “Come in!” I yelled, closing the book.

My dad was standing at the threshold, his collar loosened around his neck and a smile on his face. “We’re thinking of getting takeout for dinner. What do you want?”

I fluttered my eyelashes. “Thai!”

Dad nodded his head toward the hallway. “Thai it is. Come on, before your mom starts yelling about your ballerina slippers being left out in the foyer.” Mom complained about everything, but she liked to pick even more when it came to me. I was used to it. When you’d been cultivated by the neglect of your own mother, it’s easy to acclimatize to the callousness of the world.

Her emotional desertion only somewhat stabilized me in a way, making me stronger, and anyway, I was one hundred percent a daddy’s girl.

Climbing off the covers, I dashed into my closet to pull on my Ugg boots. My mom did nothing but stay at home and work on her garden beds, and my father was into political science. He wanted to run for office one day, probably sooner rather than later.

I treaded down the marble stairs, an extra bounce in my step. I had been reciting the cheer that would no doubt take home Nationals, so every single step was a dance step.

“Come on, kiddo.” Dad pulled me under his arm, kissing the top of my head, just as my mom smiled at me, opening the door.

It happened fast.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

I remembered my dad shoving me behind him, and the desperate screams coming from my mom. We all dropped to the ground, my father lying on top of me, his back to my front, shielding me from harm.

“You need to run, Dove. Run.”

I—words were caught in my throat, threatening to choke me.

The door swung open, and four men stood still, all with their guns raised. They were wearing plain black bandanas, and on any other day, I would have thought they were street thugs, maybe wanting money. Until I noticed a couple of them were wearing suits.

The main one tilted his head, and just when I thought he was about to say something, my dad opened his mouth. “Dove is going to leave before you do anything…”

They seemed to think over their next move. Words being silently spoken between the distance of each breath.

“Dove…” My father leaned up onto his elbow, his eyes coming to mine. A dark blue pool that’s deep enough to spill over his cheeks. “You’re going to leave.” His voice was slow. Hushed, but forceful.

I shook my head, not wanting to leave my dad. Not like this. Not ever.

“Little Bird…” he pleaded, tears finally leaking over the edges. “Please.”

He shoved me back, and the first thing I felt was the warm liquid seep through my clothes and stick to my belly. The first thing I smelled was the strong metal slosh of blood. The first thing I heard was the dying screams of my mother. But the last thing I heard before everything went black was his voice.
