Courtney

Maybe blurting out my imaginary relationship status to my nagging mother wasn’t the best idea.

Declaring that I’m dating my boss’s brother-in-law, well, that was just wishful thinking and a lot of panic.

To my embarrassment, they both overheard me. But Merrick not only offers to be my plus one, he agrees to fake date me for the next couple of months leading up to my sister’s wedding.

The more time we spend together, the harder it becomes to deny that every look, every touch, is making him more a part of my life than I’m prepared for.

The pain of thinking about walking away from him when it’s time doesn’t feel pretend. It feels real… too real.

Merrick

Courtney’s sister is tying the knot, and her mom is relentless about her finding a date and settling down. In a moment of panic, she claims she’s dating me.

To save her from the awkward situation and ease the pressure, I suggest we fake a relationship until the wedding. I figure we can hang out, show up to the wedding, and go our separate ways.

But as we start spending more time together and meeting each other’s families, the lines between real and pretend blur.

What was supposed to be a simple agreement starts to feel genuine. I’m unsure when it happened, but this relationship is suddenly the real deal, and I don’t want it to end. I want us to stay real.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

Courtney

Have you ever wanted to escape? Not forever, but for a break from life? That’s not too much to ask for, right? That’s all that keeps running through my mind as I listen to my mother drone on and on about how I need a date for my sister’s upcoming wedding.

“Courtney, are you listening to me?” my mom asks, her tone disapproving.

“I’m listening,” I assure her. Thankfully, she can’t see me roll my eyes.

“You can’t go to your sister’s wedding alone. You’re not getting any younger, Courtney. I mean, Chloe is two years younger than you and she’s getting married.” I can hear the displeasure in her tone.

My mom is great. Both of my parents are. My dad is a teacher who’s very chill. I guess he has to be working with teenagers all day. He teaches high school math and science. He and my mom are opposites in that way. My mom is... not chill. She’s a worrier by nature. She works for the city of Willow River in the water department.

When my mom gets her mind set on something, it consumes her. Hence the reason she feels as though I need a date for Chloe’s wedding. The wedding is three months away. I have time. To make matters worse, my sister is starting to agree with her, but for different reasons. Chloe is twenty and is marrying her high school sweetheart. She started dating Rodney when she was fourteen and he was sixteen. Something my mother also stressed over, but here we are, and she couldn’t be happier about the union. Anyway, Chloe wants me to find the love and happiness that she has with Rodney. She’s half camp Courtney and half camp Mom. Dad, well, he’s Switzerland.

That’s great for Chloe and Rodney. I’m happy that they know their love is solid, and I know those two are meant for each other. Everyone who knows them will tell you the same thing. They’re going to go the distance.

However, at two years older, I’m twenty-two, not forty-two. I don’t see the urgency of finding a man and settling down. My mother wants grandkids, and she knows that Chloe and Rodney are taking their time on that front while Rodney starts his career. He’s twenty-two, my age, and just graduated from college. Rodney works on computers. I’m not exactly sure what he does, but I know he’s going to excel at it because he’s a wiz, and his entry pay is nothing to shake a fist at. My sister and her future husband want to be husband and wife for a few years before they have kids.

My mom sees me as complacent. I went to community college and got a two-year associate's degree in arts. It’s basically useless. Knowing what you want to do every day for the rest of your life is a big deal. Chloe’s a medical assistant and loves it, but needles—no thanks. Besides, I’ve been working here for Jordyn for a couple of months, and I love it. She’s a great boss, and I love helping customers find the perfect gift or outfit when they visit the boutique.

It’s not that I don’t want to be married and settled down. I just don’t see the urgency.

“Mom, there is nothing wrong with me going on my own. I don’t have to have a date. Besides, I’m the maid of honor. I’ll be too busy taking care of Chloe’s every need to entertain a date.” I cross my fingers, hoping she finally buys the excuse I’ve been giving her nonstop.
Stella

Getting pregnant in college wasn’t part of the plan, but I’ll never regret giving birth to the best part of me. Even if my parents did disown me for it.

A fresh start in a small town seems like a good idea, until a handsome stranger shows me a little kindness and has me feeling things, I thought I’d never feel again… things I have no business feeling about a man I just met.

Every time I turn around, Maverick is there. One thing inevitably leads to another and my newfound friend comes with benefits. I'm doing my best to hold it all together, but the truth is, when I see him with my daughter, I know I've already fallen too far.

Maverick

From the moment Stella rolled into town, she's had my attention. Since that moment, I've been determined to befriend the sexy single mom who's down on her luck.

Stella has fallen on hard times, but something tells me she'll never take a handout. That doesn't mean I'm not going to try to help, so of course I put in a good word to get her a job. She’s smart enough to know I had a hand in it, but that’s what friends are for, right?

With each day that passes, Stella becomes more than just a friend. She's my best friend—who I apparently can't keep my hands off. She's worried we're complicating things, but screw that. Blurred lines or not, I ask her to stay anyway.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

Maverick

I hate working Saturdays. What I hate even worse is working when I know my entire family is gathered, and I’m not there. I’m used to working long hours, but we usually do it all through the week and try to avoid weekends. However, the weather rained us out two days this week, hence the reason we worked on Saturday.

Yeah, I fucking hate working the weekends.

Not because I go out and party. That’s something I used to do with my brothers, but now that they’re all married, well, all except for me and my twin, Merrick, our nights out look a whole lot different. Not that I mind. I love spending time with my family, and my brothers’ wives and kids are cool as hell.

I’m speed walking to my truck, knowing that my family is waiting for me, and I know that my mom and my sisters-in-law have more food than we can eat waiting for us, and I’m starving.

My phone rings, halting my stride. Fishing it out of my pocket, I grin when I see my brother Ryder’s name on the screen. I’m sure he’s wondering when I’m going to be there. Today is the grand opening of his wife’s boutique. “Yo,” I answer.

“Hey, man. You headed home?” Ryder asks.

“Yeah, I’m walking to my truck now.”

“All right, be safe. Come straight to the boutique.”

“I will. Aw, shit,” I mumble, seeing a car broken down on the side of the road just outside the parking lot. There appears to be a woman standing outside the car, and even from here, I can see the worried expression on her face.

“What’s up?” Ryder asks.

“Nothing. It looks like a woman might be broken down. Flat tire from the looks of it now that I’m closer. I will handle this, and then I’ll be on my way.”

“Be safe.”

“Always.” I end the call and shove my phone back into my pocket. When I reach my truck, I unlock the door and toss my lunch box inside before closing and locking it. Instead of driving to the woman and her broken-down car, I walk. I figure I’ll be less intimidating. However, that still might not be the case. I’m a strange man approaching her. At least I’m still in my uniform shirt, even if the sleeves are cut off. I have a clean one to change into in the back seat of my truck. I knew I’d be heading straight to the boutique opening from work today.

“Hi.” I raise both hands in the air as if I’m being arrested. “My name’s Maverick. Do you need help?”

The woman stops and stares at me. The worry is written all over her face. She opens her mouth, then quickly closes it again.

“I work here.” I nod toward the parking lot and point to the logo on my T-shirt. “I was just getting off work and saw you might need some help.”

She sighs, her body visibly relaxing. “I have a flat tire.”

I nod. “I can see that. Can you pop the trunk? I’ll have the spare put on in no time.” I approach her slowly.

“That is the spare.” She pulls open the back door, and that’s when I notice a baby sleeping in a car seat. “The windows were down,” she explains.

I nod. “I have nieces and nephews; they’re always a bear if you wake them up before they’re ready.”
Ryder

Two years of silence and no goodbye—she slipped away and through my fingers, leaving me with nothing but questions… and a heavy heart from missing her.

I know what we had was real, that our love was once in a lifetime.

Now she’s back from her Parisian fashion internship, and I'm ready for answers, desperate to understand why she couldn't just stay.

Jordyn

When I walked away, it was to protect him. Yet, all he knows, all he cares about, is that I left. Coming home is a bittersweet journey, each step heavier than the last.

While I’m no longer half a world away, the obstacles in front of us make it feel like we’ve never been farther apart.

I want to give him the answers he so desperately craves, and this time, I’ll get to say goodbye. However, what I didn’t plan on was Ryder’s fight. He’s not going to let me go so easily this time.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Jordyn

I can’t breathe.

The world around me is muffled, and all I can hear is my pulse pounding in my ears.

I don’t want to go.

Not like this.

My hands tremble as I sit beside my mother, waiting to board our flight.

I don’t want to be here. I’m not supposed to be here.

My chest heaves with each breath I force into my lungs. Each breath is painful and labored, as if the weight of an elephant is sitting on my chest.

It’s not the weight of an elephant; it’s much worse.

It’s heartbreak, pain, and regret. All three combined are threatening to pull me under. Not able to sit here a second longer, I jump to my feet.

“Where do you think you’re going?” my mother asks. There is so much malice in her tone, it makes me hate her even more than I do for her making me do this.

“I… need the ladies' room,” I manage to speak, but my voice doesn’t sound like my own.

“We board soon.” She raises her eyebrows. It’s a silent warning not to run off or do anything that’s not “mother approved.” It’s the same look I’ve seen from her my entire life.

I swallow thickly and nod before forcing one foot in front of the other and rushing toward the ladies' room. Once inside, I move to the nearest wall and rest against it, pulling large gulps of air into my lungs. My legs wobble, so I slide to the floor, not giving a damn of what I’m about to sit in.

It doesn’t matter.

My life is no longer my own. Not that it ever has been. I’m an adult. I shouldn’t have to bend to my mother’s will, but then she involved him. My hopes and dreams are now mere thoughts in my mind, and my heart is shattered. Millions of tiny pieces that used to be his—that still are his—will never be put back together.

Heartbreak.

Pain.

Regret.

All three emotions revolve around him.

I’ve run this through my head a million different ways, and I know that this is my only option. I have to do as she says, but the thought of losing him is tearing me apart inside. I’ve never felt this kind of hurt. The kind that wraps you in a cocoon, but it’s not comforting. It’s a constant reminder of what’s lost, and what once was.

Fumbling with my purse, I reach inside for my phone. I pull up his name and swallow back the sob that’s threatening to break free. I stare at the last message he sent me, and I can no longer hold the tears at bay. I swipe at my eyes, barely able to see the screen. I hover over the keys, but words fail me.

I’m in an impossible situation. I can’t see a way out of this, and I know that leaving him alone is best for him. I know that this is the right choice, the only choice, but it hurts. I fear the ache in my chest will forever be there as a reminder of what I’ve lost.

Locking the screen of my phone, my hands fall to my lap. It doesn’t matter how badly I want to reach out to him; I know I can’t. I rest my head against the bathroom wall. I don’t think about the germs I’m sure I’m sitting in, because all I can think about is him. All I can feel is love for him and hatred for her.

My mother.

It’s because of him that I’ll never be the same. I’ll never love another the way I love him. And my mother… she’s ruined any sliver of a relationship we might have had.

I know what love feels like now. True unconditional love, and he’s the one that gave it to me.

The day I met Ryder Kincaid changed my life.

CHAPTER ONE

Ryder

My phone feels like hot coals in my pocket.

She’s back.

The love of my life left town without telling me two years ago, and today of all days, the day my brother Archer marries his girl, Scarlett, she reaches out to me. I read her message, but quickly shoved my phone into my pocket and pasted on a smile for my brother. Archer deserves his day to be drama free. My brothers have picked me up and gotten me drunk more times than I can count since the day Jordyn left.

Today will not be about her.

Today, I get to see another of my brothers marry. I’m gaining another sister, and I couldn’t be happier for both of them. It’s just me and the twins that remain single, and that’s a hard pill to swallow. I assumed Jordyn and I would be married by now, at least engaged. I fell hard and fast for her, but she did too. She told me she loved me, and when I looked into her big brown eyes, I saw that love. I could feel it in her touch.
What happens when your wandering heart is captured by your friend with benefits?

Scarlett
Archer Kincaid is supposed to be all the fun and none of the strings, but the longer I stay in Willow River, the more I feel roots pulling me to settle down.
I plan to complete a one-year photography contract with Captured Moments, then move on to travel the world. Chasing my dreams, taking photos, and living life on my terms—shot by shot.
But I’ve been on my own since losing my adopted parents, and home isn’t about a place as much as it is a feeling. And Archer’s starting to feel like home, but loving him means trading one dream for another.

Archer
Scarlett Hatfield is the kind of girl who can’t be tamed. Her adventurous spirit is contagious, but a blue-collar man like me doesn’t chase dreams. I build them from the ground up. And my home is in Willow River.
I can see myself building a life with the gorgeous redhead who’s turning my world upside down, but that means clipping her wings. And I could never do that, not when she’s meant for more than my small-town life.
Even if it means destroying my heart, when the time comes, I’ll have to say goodbye and let her stay wild.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

Archer

“Off limits,” I mutter under my breath. My brothers think they’re funny. Unless it’s his wife, Brooks has no say so, and I’m about to prove it as I stalk toward the redheaded beauty. He thinks because she’s here working for Palmer, that he can make the rules. He didn’t give a fuck about the rules when he was sneaking around with Palmer behind everyone’s back. He doesn’t get to try and make rules and enforce them now. I know he’s doing it to get under my skin, and it worked.

I’ve been watching her all day. She’s smiled and laughed with every member of my family. Every member but me. I’m not the standout among my siblings. I’m the guy who keeps the twins in line when I can and can still hold a conversation and drink a cold beer with our older brothers. I don’t date often, and it’s been far too long since I’ve been inside a woman.

Maybe that’s about to change.

Her long red hair hangs over her shoulder. The locks look like silk, and my fingers twitch to reach out and touch them. She’s wearing a floral top that’s loose but does nothing to hide her figure since it’s a sheer material. She’s got a white tank top beneath it and is wearing white dress pants and black fuck-me heels. I’ve watched her bend and twist all day to get just the right angle for the photo she was taking. If you’d told me that watching a photographer was a turn-on, I would have called you an idiot, unless you’re my brother Brooks who’s married to one. I don’t think he got to see her in action. If he had, he would have dropped to one knee a hell of a lot sooner than he did. I’ve never spoken a word to the redheaded beauty, and the thought has crossed my mind.

“You look like you could use a drink,” I say once I’m standing in front of her.

She lowers her camera and smiles. It’s a bright, blinding smile that makes her green eyes sparkle and lights up the entire fucking room. “Thank you, but I’m working.”

“I’m sure my sister-in-law won’t mind.” I glance around the room, looking for Palmer. She’s talking to Ramsey and not paying a bit of attention to us. I turn back to her, not able to look away for long.

“Oh, you’re another brother.” She laughs. “I’ve lost track of how many of you I’ve met today.”

“One of nine,” I tell her.

“Your momma… she’s a rockstar. Sweet as pie too.” She chuckles.

“I agree on both counts.” I shove my hands inside my pants pockets because all I want to do is reach out and touch those luscious red locks and see if they’re as soft as they appear. “I’m Archer.” I should offer her my hand to shake, but this urge to pull her into me is too strong. It’s best to avoid contact at the moment. There are too many witnesses around, and the things I’ve been thinking about doing to this beautiful woman all day are still at the forefront of my mind.

“Nice to meet you, Archer. I’m Scarlett.” Her voice is raspy and sexy as fuck.

“So, a drink?” I’m trying not to sound desperate to spend time with her, but I’m failing. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a woman more beautiful.

“I don’t think I should. I’m working, and this is sort of my interview.” She lifts her camera and gives it a little shake in her hand.

I open my mouth to say, what… I’m not sure. I’m stopped by a hand on my arm. When I look over, I see who saved me from making a fool of myself. “Hey, you two.” My sister-in-law Palmer appears beside us. “Scarlett, you’ve been amazing. Thank you for being here to help. You’re off the hook for the rest of the night. Meet me at the studio around nine on Monday. We’ll work through your paperwork and get you on the schedule.”

“What?” Scarlett’s smile is wider than before, which I didn’t think was possible. “Seriously?” She moves forward and pulls Palmer into a hug. “Thank you so much, Palmer. I’m so excited to get to work with you.”

“Thank you for putting up with my interview idea.”

“Wait. You haven’t seen any of my images from today.” Scarlett punches some buttons on her screen and turns it so that Palmer can see.

Palmer waves her off. “Oh, it was never your quality of work I was questioning. You’ve got mad skills with your camera. I just needed someone like me who can talk to anyone and make their subject feel at ease. I wanted to see you in action, and from what I’ve witnessed today, you’re going to be a perfect fit for Captured Moments. I think you and I are going to get along just fine.”
Rushton
From the moment I see her, I’m hooked. There’s just something about Crosby that has me eager to know her. One thing’s for sure, I can’t stay away from the new kindergarten teacher with the kind smile and secrets in her brown eyes.
There’s no hiding in a small town, and she’s suddenly everywhere. My family loves her, my niece won’t stop talking about her, and I…well, I just want to make her mine.
Crosby is everything I didn’t know I was looking for, but the wall she keeps up makes it impossible to love her the way I want to. I have to figure out how to tear it down, and fast— because she’s not so sure she’s sticking around, and I’m not prepared to let her walk away from Willow River… or me.

Crosby
Another new town, another new school. But this time I’m not the struggling new kid; I’m the teacher. It’s hard to let go of my past, when it refuses to let go of me. I live in a constant state of unease, never knowing what the future holds. Especially when it comes to love.
Rushton isn’t like other guys. He’s open and honest. What you see is what you get. He’s made his intentions very clear. But I’m afraid getting involved only spells heartbreak for both of us. If growing up in foster care taught me anything, it’s not to get too close and definitely don’t get comfortable.
So, I learned to be good at goodbye. But for the first time in my life, I’ve found a place I want to put down

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

Rushton

I’m putting on my shoes to head out when my phone rings. When I see Sterling’s name on the screen, I laugh. “I’m on my way,” I answer.

“Can you stop and get some fishing line?”

“Are we going fishing and someone forgot to tell me?” I know that’s not why he needs it, but as his brother, it’s my job to fuck with him.

“It’s for the pictures, Rush.” He sighs. “Just hurry. I want everything done before she gets here.”

Since I can hear the stress in his voice, I cut him some slack. “I’m putting my shoes on now.” I glance down at said shoes.

“Thanks, man.”

“Anything else you need?”

“Nah. The twins are here, and everyone else is on their way.”

“Got it. Fishing line coming right up.” I end the call, not bothering to say goodbye. Not that Sterling notices. He’s so wrapped up in what he’s about to do later this evening and the surprise he has for his best friend turned live-in girlfriend to call me out on my lack of telephone etiquette.

I finish with my shoes, grab my phone from the cushion next to me, and head for the garage. My keys are on the hook next to the door, and in no time, I’m on the road, heading to Gunderson’s hardware for some fishing line.

Gunderson’s is the place in Willow River for anything you might need. From road trip snacks to small tools to bolts and zip ties. They even have homemade baked goods that a few locals drop off for sale. It truly is the place to be if you need something in this town.

The drive is short, and that’s with me taking my time. I know it will annoy Sterling. I can’t hide my smile when I think about his huff of irritation that I’m sure he’s going to direct my way. I get it. He’s making moves, big moves, and he wants his surprise to be perfect, but Alyssa is going to be occupied all day. The other Kincaid ladies will make sure of it. He needs to just relax. It’s not like she’s going to turn him down.

Pulling open the door to Gunderson’s, I’m hit with nostalgia. I don’t know how many trips we made here as kids with Dad. He was always tinkering with something or working on his honey-do list for our mom. Gunderson’s has been a staple not only in the town of Willow River but in my life as well.

“Rushton Kincaid,” George Gunderson announces as I step inside.

“George, good to see you.” I nod at him. George is a third-generation Gunderson, and it’s always his smiling face behind the counter with each visit. His son, George the fourth, is sure to take his place one day.

I’m glad our parents gave us our own names and identities. I couldn’t imagine any of us being Raymond Kincaid the second. Besides, with nine boys, they needed more options.

I know this place probably as well as George himself, so I turn left and head toward the back wall, where I’ll find a selection of a fishing line. When I reach the wall, I encounter something so much better than what I came here for.

A beautiful woman.

She’s got dark, straight shoulder-length hair, and from the looks of her ass in those jeans, a tight little body. She’s reaching for the top shelf, standing on her tiptoes, and making no headway.

“Need some help?” I ask, shoving my hands in my pockets to keep from reaching out for her. I’m nervous she’s going to topple over with the way she’s balancing on her toes and reaching over her head.

The beauty falls to her feet and turns to face me. She blows out a breath, causing her hair to fly out of her eyes. “Yes, please.” She smiles kindly.

Her smile is meant to be kind, but it hits me in the chest. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more beautiful woman. I’ve seen many—my momma for one—and my brothers’ wives and girlfriends are all beautiful, but this woman, she’s breathtaking.

“What do you need?” There is a huskiness to my voice that surprises me.

“Fishing line.”

“You fish?” I ask, not making a move to grab the line.

She chuckles. “No, well, I mean, I have, but that’s not why I need it. I’m a teacher, and I plan to use it to hang my students’ crafts from the ceiling in my classroom.”

My mind is suddenly riddled with a naughty student-teacher scene that is definitely not safe for work.

“A teacher,” I repeat, because apparently, in the presence of this beauty, my mind stops working.

She nods, a smile lifting her lips. I know because I’m staring at them, imagining how they would feel wrapped around my cock. “Kindergarten.”

“Y’all need some help?” George’s voice breaks me out of my fantasy.

“Nah, we’re all set,” I call back to him. I turn to look, and he nods, heading back to his spot behind the counter. “Which one?” I ask the woman turning me into my teenage self. I point to the fishing line.
Sterling

It’s always been her, and I just never realized. Now that I’m looking at her that way, I can’t unsee it… and I don’t want to. Alyssa has been my best friend since kindergarten, and these intense new feelings could cost me our friendship.

She’s the one I share everything with, good or bad. It makes sense to share my life with her. But I can’t risk losing the only woman I’ve ever loved, which will happen if she doesn’t feel the same.

Alyssa

Falling for my best friend is easy, but keeping it to myself while figuring out what to do about it is the hard part. Because in a small town, everyone knows everyone… and their business.

Sterling is the perfect guy—handsome, with a heart of gold and a protective streak. I know he’ll do anything for me… except maybe admit he feels the same way I do.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER

ONE

Sterling

“Uncle Sterling!” My niece, Blakely, giggles as I spin us around in a circle. I hold her tight in my arms as her head falls back, her hair rippling with each turn.

“Faster?” I ask.

“Faster!” she agrees.

I move my feet, spinning us faster. Her laughter reaches in and binds itself around my heart. This little girl has us all wrapped around her little finger. Knowing that she just had a big slice of her birthday cake with ice cream, I slow until we’re no longer rotating. Blakely places her head on my shoulder, and I don’t have to see her face to know she’s still smiling.

“That was fun.” She snuggles into me.

I kiss the top of her head and squeeze her tightly. I love my brothers and my parents, but when Blakely came along, it was a whole different kind of love. One I’d never known. I remember the first time I held her. She was so damn tiny, swaddled up in a pink blanket. I recall thinking that my brothers and I were fucked, because she was going to rule the roost.

I wasn’t wrong, and we all love every minute of it.

Don’t get me wrong. She’s not a brat. In fact, she appears to be much older than today’s birthday party represents. She’s five going on fifteen. She’s spunky and cute as hell.

“Are you hogging the birthday girl?” Ryder, one of my younger brothers, asks. There are nine of us in total.

“Yep.”

“Uncle Sterling, Mommy says you have to share,” my niece scolds.

“But I’m your favorite,” I tease. We all do.

“I have lots of favorites,” she admits with a toothy smile.

“My turn.” Ryder pulls her from my arms and tickles her belly as they walk away. Looking around my brother Declan’s backyard, I seek him out. I spot him and his wife, Kennedy, our brother Brooks, and his wife, Palmer, all sitting on the back deck. I make my way to them, leaning over the back of Kennedy’s chair and kissing the top of her head. “A boy. Congratulations.”

Declan reaches over and places his hand protectively over her growing baby bump. It’s something that he often does. Hell, they all do. My brothers do not shy away from showing affection for their wives and unborn children. Over the past few years, our family has grown. I have three new sisters-in-law, and we’re adding three new babies to the Kincaid clan. Then, our cousin Ramsey, who is more like our little sister, is getting married next month. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll be adding Deacon to our list of added family members.

“Is this where all the cool kids hang out?” my oldest brother, Orrin, asks.

I watch as he pulls a chair out for his pregnant wife, Jade, and waits for her to sit before taking one of the open seats next to her at the table.

“You know it.” Palmer, my brother Brooks’s wife, smiles, rubbing her belly.

“Not much longer,” Jade tells her.

“I know. I can’t believe we get to meet her in a handful of weeks,” Palmer replies.

“It feels like we’ve been waiting to meet her for years.” Brooks leans over and kisses his wife.

We all laugh. If there was ever a man excited to be a father, it’s Brooks. That’s not saying that Declan and Orrin are any less excited, but Brooks, he tells anyone who’s willing to listen that he and his wife are expecting their first baby. My big brother is a softie. Then again, out of the nine of us, three are married, and every single one of them is a big ole teddy bear when it comes to their wives.

“Tink!” I call out to my best friend, Alyssa. I call her Tink because she’s a tiny thing compared to me. She just walked around the corner of the house. She’s laughing at something the twins are saying. Shaking her head at them, she turns to head in our direction. “Come sit.” I pat the empty seat next to me.
Declan

My whole world has revolved around caring for my baby girl. I never wanted to let anyone into my life—into our lifeuntil Kennedy came to town and threw a wrench into my single-dad routine.

She’s the first woman to make me feel something… anything, in a long time. If only she would let me in.

Kennedy is kind, beautiful, and everything I never knew that I wanted. She looks at me as if I'm her entire world, and her bond with my daughter is something to see. But there’s a problem: she's leaving in a few weeks, and I need to find a way to ask her to stay.

Kennedy

My trip to Willow River came at the perfect time to escape. Taking care of my grandmother should be my whole focus. What I shouldn’t be doing is falling for a drop-dead-gorgeous single dad. But my meddling grandmother has other ideas.

Declan is impossible to resist. Everything with him is easy and feels right. We feel right. But the timing is all wrong— no matter how I wish I could change things.

He’s a forever kind of guy, but this isn’t my home, and he doesn’t know what he’s asking when two words change everything… “stay forever.”

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Twelve Hours Ago

Kennedy

Why is it that when one bad thing happens in your life, it seems as if a shit show parade of unpleasant events follows? Mine started with my failed marriage. Lyle and I met in college. We were friends first, and he eventually swept me off my feet. We dated for two years and married right after graduation. Somewhere over the past four years, we grew apart. A lot of that had to do with wanting a family. As in, I wanted one, and he didn’t. I was told when I was sixteen that I might not ever be able to conceive, but there were other ways for me to be a mother. It’s something I’ve always wanted. My husband agreed that when the time came, we could discuss it. We married, but over the next four years, the time never came that he was willing. There was never a good time to talk about adoption, or fostering, or any of the other options available to us. He just didn’t want that life.

About six months ago, I sat him down one night and told him it was time to talk about it. He refused and said he needed some space. He packed a bag and left. He’s stopped by a few times, and we’d talk on the phone a few times a week, but he wasn’t budging, and neither was I.

He hasn’t slept here since.

Honestly, something changed between us. If I felt as though he loved me, truly loved me, I could handle giving up my dream of being a mother. The truth of the matter is that he was gone more than was here. He had late client dinners, golf outings, and a million other reasons he wasn’t at home with me. His wife. He works in finance and hangs out with the guys from his work, who can only be described as a group of douchebags. I’m not dinging the entire finance workforce, but these guys are assholes to the highest power. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt unnerved by their beady eyes roaming over my body, even with Lyle standing right next to me.

I don’t want that life.

So six weeks after he moved out, we decided it was time to call it quits. I’m twenty-five, soon-to-be-divorced, and the second half of the shit show parade just called me. My grandma fell and broke her leg. She’s out of commission for a while and needs me to come help her run her business. She owns Willow Manor. It’s a small venue used for weddings, anniversary parties, and a host of other different things in her small town of Willow River, Georgia.

After talking to the doctors, and her neighbor Carol, I’ve been assured that she will be taken care of until I can get there. Luckily for me, I can work from anywhere. As a book editor for a host of indie authors, my job travels with me, which is why I’m frantically packing up my life to make the three-and-a-half-hour drive to Willow River tonight.

I take stock of my two open suitcases, and I think I have everything I’ll need. I’m going through my mental list when there’s a knock on the door. Glancing at the alarm clock on the nightstand, I see it’s just after nine, and I’m not expecting anyone. Grabbing my cell phone just in case—you can never be too careful, especially living alone—I make my way to the door. On my way, I pull up the camera on my phone and see Lyle standing there. He has a key, but I’m glad he respects my boundaries and the reality of our current situation not to just barge in on me.
Orrin

From the moment she stepped back into town, I wanted her.

No matter where I am, if she’s around, she has all of my attention. The only problem is that she doesn’t know it. She doesn’t know that I can feel her when she walks into a room or that I can see her auburn hair when I close my eyes at night.

I think it’s time to do something about that.

Jade

From the moment I stepped back into town, I wanted him.

He’s always surrounded by a group of his brothers or his best friend, but that doesn’t stop me from stealing glances. He doesn’t know that I’m crushing on him like a teenager or that sometimes I dream of him.

Maybe one day, I’ll do something about that.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Orrin

There is something to be said about family traditions. Especially in the Kincaid family. We take our traditions very seriously. This one, however, is one I never miss. Once a year, my dad takes my eight brothers and me—yes, you read that right. I have eight brothers—camping and fishing for an extended weekend. We leave my mom, who is also the only female in our house, on her own to do… well, whatever it is women do when they have the house to themselves. We take to the country and live our best lives. We don’t worry about saying “excuse me” when we pass gas or belch, and we don’t have to worry about Mom asking us if we washed behind our ears.

Yes, you read that right too. I’m not sure if you know this, but boys… guys are dirty. Especially teenage boys, prepubescent boys, and toddlers. There are nine of us, all stair-stepped in age by two years, and only one set of twins. The babies, Maverick and Merrick.

I’m ranked first in the lineup. Beneath me, we have Declan, Brooks, Sterling, Rushton, Archer, Ryder, and then the twins. It goes without saying there has never been a dull moment growing up in our house. My brothers might drive me crazy, but I’d lay my life down for them.

“Boys,” Dad says, and we all stop what we’re doing and gather around the campfire. We all know what’s coming. The same speech he gives us every single year. “Don’t ever expect anything in this life to be handed to you. You have to work hard and love even harder.”

“You work hard every day building things, right, Daddy?” six-year-old Maverick asks.

“That’s right.”

“And you love Momma hard?” Merrick, his twin, asks.

My brothers and I snicker at that, and even Dad cracks a smile. “With every breath,” he tells him.

My dad lets his eyes fall on each of us. “I love you, boys. Know that you can always come to me with anything. Me or your mother. We’re here for you always.”

A chorus of “We know” and “love you too” rings out around the fire.

“Flashlight tag!” Archer cheers, and everyone scurries to their tents to grab their flashlights.

No matter how old we get, we’re never too old for a game of flashlight tag with our brothers.

CHAPTER

ONE

Orrin

I can’t take my eyes off her. I’ve been watching her all night, but that’s nothing new. Every single time Jade Sanders is anywhere near, my eyes stay glued to her. Of course, I try to do it on the sly. I don’t need my brothers giving me shit, but truthfully, if it got me the girl, I wouldn’t even care what they had to say. They can dish it out all day long if she’s mine.

“See something you like?” Declan asks.

“Just wondering when Deacon’s going to do this thing.”

“Uh-huh.” He laughs. “I’m sure that’s why you’re staring at that table full of beautiful women that our baby cousin is currently sitting with.

“I plead the fifth.” I grin, and so does he.

“Just ask her out already. Anytime she’s around, your eyes follow her. It doesn’t matter where she is in the room.”

I think about denying it, but there’s no point. My brothers and I are close, all nine of us, even the twins who are the babies of the family. “Can’t help it.”

“Just go talk to her.”

“Thought about it,” I confess.

“And what’s stopping you?”

“Been a long time since I asked a woman out on a date.”

He nods. “I get that, man, trust me, single dad here, remember?” He points to his chest. “She and Ramsey have gotten close. Hell, those four are thick as thieves.” He motions toward the booth where Ramsey, our baby cousin, her best friend, Palmer, Palmer’s sister, Piper, and Jade, who is Piper’s best friend, are sitting. They’re all laughing and talking, and they keep glancing this way.

“Just like riding a bike,” Declan says, slapping a hand on my shoulder.

“Then why haven’t you done it?”

“You know my situation is different. Besides, I have a sassy little girl who I spend all my free time with.”

“You’re a great dad, Dec. You can take time for yourself.”

He nods. “Yeah, but I want to give it all to her.” A smile comes over his face. “I still remember the day Cassie came to the shop asking if we could talk. I assumed it was like any other hookup, you know? She wanted to get together again, but I was going to politely decline. I was scared as hell that day, O. I thought my life was over. I was having a baby with a woman I’d met once. Then I heard my girl’s first cries, held her in my arms, and it changed me. I know it sounds crazy, brother, but that’s what happened. I’d give my daughter all my days and all my minutes over a random hookup.”
Brooks
Overhearing my cousin’s best friend confessing that she’s never been satisfied wasn’t my fault… but offering to help her change that definitely was. Her brother is a friend of mine, and while this has a bad idea written all over it, it doesn’t stop us from becoming friends… with benefits.
Palmer is gorgeous, off-limits, and stubborn as hell. For the first time, I’m the one left wanting more.
I’m tired of watching her walk away. I’m ready for her to stay.

Palmer
I never dreamed having my crush overhear my most embarrassing confession would land me in his bed… or that I would want to stay there.
But our secret relationship has rules. No strings. No expectations. No feelings. What’s that saying about rules? Oh yeah, they’re meant to be broken.
But when it comes to Brooks, I’m afraid if I’m not the one to walk away, it won’t be just the rules broken.

FULL BOOK START HERE:

CHAPTER

ONE

Brooks

I’m standing in the back of the room, watching as my little cousin smiles up at her future husband. I admit that Deacon and Ramsey together is not something I would have predicted. He’s ten years older than her. The same age as Orrin, and Ramsey, she lands in the middle of Archer and Ryder. I never saw it coming, but to see the two of them together, no one questions the love they have for each another.

The crowd, and by the crowd, I mean most of my brothers, chant for them to kiss as they stare lovingly into one another’s eyes. Deacon wraps his arms around her, pulling her into his chest, and drops his lips to hers. The moment is so intimate I have to look away, feeling as though I need to give them privacy.

My eyes land on Palmer, and the smile that lights up her face as she watches her brother and her best friend kiss can only be described as pure joy. She radiates happiness for them, and I’m sure there’s a little bit of pride there as well. She’s the one who got them together, and I’ve heard her boast about it many times. Even though she brags about setting all of this in motion, she can’t hide her happiness for the couple.

“When I get married, I’m not doing any of this engagement party shit,” Maverick, one of the twins and the babies in the family, says, stepping up beside me.

I huff out a laugh. “Trust me, my man, when you feel like that”—I point to where Deacon stands with his arm around Ramsey’s waist, holding her close to him while they talk to his parents—“about someone, there likely isn’t much you wouldn’t agree to.”

“How would you know?” my little brother challenges.

He and his twin, Merrick, just turned nineteen, and they have so much to learn. “Call it a hunch,” I tell him.

He’s quiet for a few minutes, and when he speaks again, his words surprise me. “You ever been in love, Brooks?” His voice is softer than it was previously.

“Love like that?” I point to our cousin and her fiancé. “No. There has never been anyone to hold my interest long enough.” It’s true. I’ve dated here and there but never anything or anyone serious. Not because I’m against the act of falling ass over heels in love. It’s the opposite, in fact. I grew up watching my parents and the love they have for one another. I’ll never settle for anything less than what they have.

“Dad’s always preaching about working hard and loving harder, yet all of us are still single. I mean, Merrick and me, we’re the babies, but the rest of you, well, except for Orrin, are still single.”

“Love takes time, kid,” I tell him.

I feel a slight punch to my arm and grin. He and Merrick both hate it when we call them kids. “It took Orrin thirty-two years to find the one, and Deacon too. They’re the same age. But they found it. We will too. Besides, you’re too young to be thinking about settling down.”

“I’m not. Not really. I just… you know, these things make you think, and the way Orrin fell so fast for Jade, I was just curious if it would be like that for the rest of us.”

“Honestly, I don’t know. I think that sometimes it’s fast and others it’s like a slow build. There is no timeline you have to follow.”

“Yeah,” he agrees as Rushton, the middle brother of the nine, joins us.

“What are you two talking about all serious?” His eyes bounce from me to Maverick.

“Mav was just telling me that when he gets married, he’s omitting the engagement party,” I tell him.

Rushton nods. “You might be on to something, little brother.”

After draining the last of my beer, I hold up the empty bottle. “I’m grabbing another. You want one?” I ask Rushton.
