The reclusive Ian barely participates in life, only doing so when his powers demand that he use them or pay the consequences. It seems that there’s not a single person on this planet who doesn’t want something from him, but the pain and suffering of others is nearly unbearable at times, leaving him no choice but to act.
That is until Wink unwittingly walks into his life, completely unaware that she’s stepped straight into the dragon’s den. Wink is just trying to get home after a long day of work. Her plans for the evening do not include stumbling upon a man with blood on his hands hovering over a dead woman in her hallway.
There are three things that someone in Wink’s position should’ve done in that instance.
1. Slowly back away from the hot, bearded killer and run the other way.
2. Call the cops.
3. Not come back until the scene was safe.
Instead, she stops, takes a picture—drawing the man’s attention to her—and then takes off at the speed of a fat, blind and possibly intoxicated penguin.
Ian tries to let her go, but the moment that she runs, every single one of his predatory instincts surge to the surface and the hunt is on. Ian always catches his prey, this time is no different. What is different is that, for the first time in his life, he is consumed with the need to keep his catch.

Wink

The stairs screamed in protest as I made my way back down the ladder.

I hated my job.

Well and truly hated it; I had no clue why I continued to do it when I hated it so much.

In fact, if I’d just quit already, I would be free to do my photography full time.

But that was the thing about me. I hated quitting. Anything.

It didn’t matter what it was.

A sport. A novel. A job.

They were all the same in my book.

Not to mention that I had no guarantee that next month would be as good as this month.

Christmas was now over, and I’d realized that if I managed to get at least six clients a month, I could make enough to carry me through until next month.

I also sold my photography as well. Anything I was able to sell was an added bonus that gave me a tiny cushion and made everything a little bit easier.

But my brain was still stuck in ‘poor’ mode. Meaning that I couldn’t quit. Not when my mind still had me eating Ramen noodles when my bank account clearly could accommodate Velveeta mac and cheese.

My brain just couldn’t process that I was in the black on the balance sheet, not the red.

So, until I was confident in that, it meant I had to stick it out at my day job.

Once I had enough in my savings to hold me for a year, then I’d know it was time to stop my day job and pursue my passion, but not until then.

Not after the last four years.

Which was why I was currently crawling down the steps of the upstairs loft in my client’s house.

I was a professional cleaner.

Or maid, if you wanted to get all technical and shit.

I worked for a man who I never saw, yet he always managed to make a huge fucking mess.

My guess was that he only came out at night, after I was gone.

That would certainly explain why I never saw him.

It would also explain why his house was such a freakin’ pigsty every other morning when I came back.

Last night, it appeared, he’d had another party, because there were dishes and cups everywhere, as well as questionable things on his sheets.

My boss owned a large house on the outskirts of Dallas, right on the lake.

It was a three story monstrosity that was the bane of my existence.

But, alas, I had it clean.

For today, at least.

Now it was time to go home.

Which I did not five minutes later, being sure to lock up so I didn’t get another threatening letter from my boss for forgetting.

Which I never did.

Ever.

I was a freak about locks.

I had six of them on my door at home, as well as a reinforced door, a security chain, and a half-assed security system I’d bought off of Amazon.

So yes, I understood all too well the importance of locking doors.

Something I’d found out the hard way.

Meaning I didn’t screw up when it came to locking a door, especially not someone’s that I had to go into where there were so many freakin’ places to hide.

After locking up, I made my way home, thankful that the day’s traffic was over with. Mostly.

The interstate was always busy, but it was nothing like the five o’clock rush hour.

Today, as I drove by Taco Bell and decided to get myself a burrito that I ate in the car on the way home, I was told myself that tomorrow I would start my diet.

Tomorrow I would lose the ten pounds I’d been promising to do for the last half a year.

But would it even matter if I did?

It was highly unlikely that I would find anyone.

Not unless I could meet them in traffic, at my boss’s shitty big house, or at the houses where I painted my murals.

Speaking of murals, my best friend and brother from another mother, Shane, chose that moment to call.

“Hello?” I answered, pulling into my driveway.

“Why, oh why, do I not know how to paint yet?” he asked me.

I laughed.

“Because you like to work with metal,” I said amusingly. “And you don’t paint well.”

“You like to sculpt with metal, but you can paint, too,” he countered.

“That’s true,” I said, getting out of my car, being sure to grab the trash from my devoured burrito out of the cup holder.

I sighed and started up the front path that led to my apartment, then even further inside the building.

“What are you doing tonight?” I asked him.

“Working at the bar,” he said almost distractedly. “Hey, can I call you back? I think someone’s here.”

He hung up before I could reply, and I sighed, dropping my phone into my purse and hitching the handles back over my shoulder.

I had no life.
Keifer Vassago, The Prince of Dragons, has enough on his plate without adding a brunette with a bad attitude to the mix. Fate has a way of screwing all his plans, though, whether he wants them screwed or not. One second he’s fetching his brother from yet another situation that could possibly compromise the Vassago name, and the next that brunette is grabbing his assets.
Blythe isn’t after anyone’s assets, though. She’s a good girl. All she wants is to graduate from nursing school, get a job, and move out of her hell hole apartment. What she does not have time to deal with is a sexy bearded man that accuses her of grabbing his junk. She tries to forget about the encounter, but fate’s a cruel bitch.
One second she’s a normal college student barely living paycheck to paycheck, and the next she’s setting her panties on fire with powers from an ancient immortal dragon. To add insult to injury, she’s hearing voices, and none of them are figments of her imagination.
Blythe’s life is turned upside down, and Keifer forces her to adapt even though she doesn’t want to. She likes her life just the way it is. Not to mention she wants nothing to do with that arrogant asshole. She doesn’t care that he rides a dragon. She also could care less about his stupid beard, and his sexy eyes.
Yeah, who was she kidding? She wasn’t convincing anybody.

Age is just a number. False, age is a word.

-Proven Fact

Keifer

“Farrow, you stupid fuck, where are you?” I growled into my phone.

Stupid fucking brother.

I wouldn’t have had to use my phone if the stupid fuck would’ve answered the telepathic call I sent, but the fucker was blocking me with everything he had. Something he’d only be able to do for one goddamned week, because, well…he just wasn’t me.

I was the oldest. I could do things that they all couldn’t. I could do things that my father couldn’t. Being the eldest, as well as having the gift of time, was helpful.

Not to mention the fact that I was prince of the dragons, for fuck’s sake.

I could tell that he was alive, but nothing else was coming through.

“He’s mad that you told him he couldn’t bring his girlfriend here,” Nikolai explained.

My eyes turned to him and I glared.

Brother or not, he wasn’t too old for a good ass kicking.

“What exactly did you want me to do? If I let him bring his girlfriend onto the grounds, then I’d have to let all of you bring your one-night-fucks, girlfriends, and boyfriends. Then it wouldn’t be very secure anymore, since the shield we spent two fucking years working on would have to come down. Every fucking dragon, dragon rider, or enemy of ours within a thirty-mile radius will be able to spot the place,” I growled in frustration.

Though he’d heard it all before. This was our sanctuary for fuck’s sake. There were other things besides them that I was thinking of!

I was beyond frustrated. It wasn’t like I wanted to forbid it, but I just couldn’t see any other way around it.

I looked at my brother, who was also the brains behind our operations.

Then I sighed. Maybe I was being unfair.

“If you can make it so the veil doesn’t have to be brought down, I would permit it in a heartbeat. But, I have other things to consider here. Until that time comes, I have a moral obligation to keep them out,” I shook my head.

Nikolai nodded and brought his finger up to his upper lip, tapping in concentration. His tattooed biceps bulged with each minuscule movement of his finger.

“Let me brainstorm when we get back from patrol. I might be able to figure out something,” he rumbled before he stood to go.

I watched him walk away, my mind full of turmoil.

“When are you going?” Skylar, my sister, asked, not even bothering to look up from her hunched position over some papers in the corner of the room. The place we all inevitably migrated to despite the massiveness of the sanctuary.

Skylar, my sister, who was the closest in age to me, was the scholar of the group. My mother and her had no special powers like my brothers and I did. No female on Earth had powers. It was only the male population that was blessed with those abilities.

But somehow, she could come and go as she pleased, passing through the veil as we did. As could our mother.

So she made up for her ‘shortcomings’, as she saw it, and put all of her available time and ability into research and caring for other dragon riders. She felt that she could be of some help in that way, so she chose to become a doctor, and she researches the dragon riders’ physical makeup, seeing what made them tick.

Very rarely did I see her without her nose in some sort of book. That didn’t mean that she wasn’t fully aware of absolutely everything. Even the things I didn’t want her to be aware of.

She also knew me incredibly well. Knew that I wouldn’t leave my brother for long. Not when he was so close to the change.

It could happen anytime now, seeing as his birthday was only months away.

And when that time came, I sure as hell didn’t want him in the middle of a busy city.

I could see the headline in the news now. Boy Goes Crazy; Summons Dragon In Dallas, Texas

Standing up, I stretched my arms up high over my head. “I’m going out to find the little peckerhead. Do you need anything while I’m gone?”

My sister didn’t answer me, and I didn’t really expect her to.

Your sister’s thinking about that boy again. Declan, my dragon, communicated telepathically with me.

I blinked. What do you mean?

Zed. Or maybe Fred. The dragon rider who came in last week with the smashed in skull. The one who’s in the faint.

I growled. That’d been a blow when Derek had gone down.

His name’s Derek. And it’s a coma…not a faint.

Close enough.

Not even, I thought with a roll of my eyes.

I felt a whisper of a laugh against my skin. The names of mortals other than you do not concern me.

Whatever you say. Meet me in the backyard.

10-4, homie.
Nikolai Vassago has a plan. His day starts out fairly normal. Get up, kick some ass, fondle his beard, take some names.
One second he’s participating in a normal every day mission, and the next he’s saving the one woman that fate has promised him for the rest of his life from the grips of a criminal mastermind.
Nikolai can’t say he’s altogether displeased with what he’s given, though. Not with that gorgeous brunette that would soon be warming his bed.
The same can’t be said for Brooklyn. Living in a commune most of her life meant she wasn’t exposed to all of life’s craziness. The moment she turned eighteen, she was off and running, experiencing all of what life had to give.
That means she sometimes jumps in feet first, not thinking about consequences until the deed is already done. Nikolai rescues her from a fate worse than hell, throwing her on the back of his dragon and flying off into the night.
He’s a go-with-the-flow kind of man. Brooklyn, however, is not. Having been caged for the first eighteen years of her life, she wants nothing more than to be free to do what she pleases, consequences be damned.
Nikolai, however, has different ideas, and he’s not above using his masculine will to prove to her that she’s exactly where she needs to be.

-Food for Thought

Nikolai

Alright, Jean Luc. You know what to do, I said telepathically to my spotter.

Jean Luc hit the lights and the entire surrounding area went dark.

I blinked, and then suddenly I was seeing in shades of red, green, blue, yellow, and orange.

There’s a man in the back room, left corner. Gun. There’s a man on the right side of the front room, in front of the television. Gun on the table. One more on the back porch smoking a cigarette, no gun, I relayed to my men who were surrounding the building.

10-4, was echoed amongst them, and I started to creep forward on my hands and knees.

I had no clue what kind of security they had out here, but with my ability to control my body temperature, I hoped that whatever infrared/thermal cameras they had out here would be rendered useless with all the power I was expending.

Slowly, we all converged at once, moving stealthily through the long grass.

Perdita was overhead, circling closer and closer, looking at her own version of a thermal heat camera.

Perdita could do wonderful things, but one of the best things was her ability to manipulate her energy.

She could appear hot, cold, or even dead. Whatever she wanted you to see is what you saw.

I also had that gift.

It was a gift that not even my older brother, the badass King of the Dragon Riders, had.

I could sense heat like a…well…dragon.

My bonded dragon, Perdita, was very unique, and from all places, across ‘the pond’, as she put it.

She was from Ireland, and over eight hundred years old.

She’d never bonded to anyone but me; something that was the same for most dragons and their bonded dragon riders.

I had not understood the depth of Perdita’s powers until we’d been bonded for over four years. She’d given me short lessons on how to harness the powers that she’d passed on to me, but I’d not been able to do so at first.

Mostly because I’d bonded with her at the young age of nineteen, instead of twenty-one.

I’d still been a boy, and hadn’t really understood the enormity of our connection until my brother had sat me down and explained that not even he had bonded until he was twenty-one.

So it’d been a wakeup call to realize that Perdita hadn’t been completely honest with me until I’d accidentally used her gift on her.

Perdita was the queen of illusions and was excellent at appearing harmless.

And apparently, so had I. I’d finally gotten sick of how she’d been treating me, and had thrown her so far into an illusion that I didn’t know how to get her back out. Mostly because I wasn’t sure how to get her out of it, and partly because I was still mad at her.

After she managed to get out of it herself, she’d apologized, and then had explained that I’d shown her her worst nightmare. Something in which to this day, she still hadn’t told me about.

Something inside of me stilled, and all my warning receptors started to clang at the same time.

Ford, Alaric, Jean Luc, Ian, and Dorian stopped when I hissed out a warning the second I saw the first trip wire.

There’re explosives. Be vigilant, I ordered.

Do you want me to disable them, Boss? Ian asked.

Negative. If we have to leave in a hurry, I don’t want them to be able to come for us at a quick pace. It’s best if they think they’re all inactive. It might prove useful later, I explained to the men.

10-4, Ian confirmed.

So we kept moving until we had about four feet in between us and the house.

Alright, Perdita. Do your thing.

Yes, Sire. You’ve got about ten minutes until I will no longer be able to hold it, Perdita expounded.

Perdita was so good.

All Perdita—or me for that matter—had to do was send out what was similar to a movie toward the men in the house.

However, she was more selective than I was.

When I wanted to play the mind games, everyone within my immediate area saw the same thing.

The only ones immune were my brothers.

And they didn’t even realize things were different before, or after, Perdita and I played our mind games.

I wasn’t sure what she was showing them, but not one of them reacted as I moved into the house like I owned the place.

My limited telekinetic abilities enabled me to open the doors without breaking anything, then walk straight up to the first man and take him out with a sleeper hold.

He never even realized I was there, nor that I was choking off his air supply.

He stayed pliant in my arms until he passed out from lack of oxygen.

Then, with the utmost care, I dropped him to the floor at my feet.
