From New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestselling author Kristen Proby comes an all-new small town romance set in her beloved Huckleberry Bay series, Cherry Lane!

Sometimes, love is waiting in the most unexpected of places.

Zeke Cross is a big city guy who finds himself living in the smallest town on the face of the earth, running an auto repair shop with his best friend. Not just running, but owning. He’s not used to sleepy little towns. He craves noise, excitement, and people. And yet, he’s grown to love the town of Huckleberry Bay, and the people who have welcomed him into the fold. Almost everyone has been kind and accepting of the outsider.

Everyone except Cherry Dubois.

Cherry is a small town girl, and she misses the sleepy community from her childhood. Now, her home is overrun by move-ins, who seem hell-bent on bringing big city ideals to her little town, and ruining what she’s always had. Her neighbor, Zeke, is the most annoying of all, with his loud music and arrogant attitude. How is she supposed to think when he’s around? Sure, he’s handsome, but that almost makes it worse.

Then Cherry needs Zeke’s help, and she finds out that the big city guy isn’t all that bad, especially when he has his hands on her and makes her forget all the reasons why she doesn’t like him. But at the end of the day, will she be able to trust this man to stay for good, or will her worst fears come true?

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

One Thousand and One Dark Nights

Once upon a time, in the future…

I was a student fascinated with stories and learning.

I studied philosophy, poetry, history, the occult, and

the art and science of love and magic. I had a vast

library at my father’s home and collected thousands

of volumes of fantastic tales.

I learned all about ancient races and bygone

times. About myths and legends and dreams of all

people through the millennium. And the more I read

the stronger my imagination grew until I discovered

that I was able to travel into the stories... to actually

become part of them.

I wish I could say that I listened to my teacher

and respected my gift, as I ought to have. If I had, I

would not be telling you this tale now.

But I was foolhardy and confused, showing off

with bravery.

One afternoon, curious about the myth of the

Arabian Nights, I traveled back to ancient Persia to

see for myself if it was true that every day Shahryar

(Persian: شهريار, “king”) married a new virgin, and then

sent yesterday's wife to be beheaded. It was written

and I had read that by the time he met Scheherazade,

the vizier's daughter, he’d killed one thousand

women.

Something went wrong with my efforts. I arrived

in the midst of the story and somehow exchanged

places with Scheherazade – a phenomena that had

never occurred before and that still to this day, I

cannot explain.

Now I am trapped in that ancient past. I have

taken on Scheherazade’s life and the only way I can

protect myself and stay alive is to do what she did to

protect herself and stay alive.

Every night the King calls for me and listens as I spin tales.

And when the evening ends and dawn breaks, I stop at a

point that leaves him breathless and yearning for more.

And so the King spares my life for one more day, so that

he might hear the rest of my dark tale.

As soon as I finish a story... I begin a new

one... like the one that you, dear reader, have before

you now.

Prologue

Cherry

“My new neighbor just pulled in.” I’m on the phone with my best friend, Montana, as I peer through the slats of my blinds, waiting for the driver to hop out of the moving truck below. “I’m hoping for an older lady or someone single. And quiet.”

“You’re an old lady,” Montana replies with a chuckle. “And you’re not even thirty yet. You need to learn to live a little.”

“I work super early in the morning,” I remind her. “And the last people watched old western movies late into the night. It was either that, or there were shoot-outs next door. Either way, it wasn’t fun.”

“I’m hoping it’s someone hot,” Montana replies. “A hot man who’s going to come in there and sweep you off your feet and remind you what it’s like to be young and spontaneous.”

“Was I ever young and spontaneous?”

“It’s not too late to start now. Hey, I’ve got some customers. I’d better go. Keep me posted.”

“Will do. Save some of that huckleberry ice cream for me.”

As I set my phone aside, the moving truck’s door opens, and I hold my breath, waiting.

“What is taking so long?” I mutter. “Step out, damn it. Show yourself.”

It’s hot today, which is unusual for Huckleberry Bay. Being a seaside town, we get a lot of ocean breeze, but the air is still today, and the sun is blazing.

I’m almost sticky.

I could turn on the air-conditioning, but I’m cheap as hell.

Finally, I see a sneaker-clad foot sticking out of the truck, then blue jeans appear.

And then…I sigh as I see that Montana got her wish.

He’s sexy as hell and just upped the temperature in here by ten degrees, making me rethink the air-conditioning situation. I can’t help but notice he has no ring on his finger.

And he fills out a white T-shirt nicely with muscled arms and a chest that begs for a woman’s hands.

He has sunglasses on, aviators at that, so I can’t see his eyes. But his hair is brown, and it’s messy, like he’s been running his hands through it in agitation.

“Shit. He’s hot. Am I going to have to listen to him have sex all the time? I mean, looking like that, he must have women falling at his feet. Or, he’s attached.”

Scowling, I blow out a breath and step back from the blinds, deciding to go down and introduce myself.

I might as well see what I’m getting into with the new neighbor.

Slipping my feet into my old, pink flip-flops, I walk down the stairs to the parking lot and catch Mr. Sexypants as he opens the back of the truck.

“Hey.”

He glances at me in surprise and then slowly pulls his glasses down his nose and looks me up and down, a smile spreading over his face.

He’s not hot.

He’s devastating.

“Hi,” he says in reply.

“Are you moving into 2F?”

“That’s me.” He leans back on the truck and folds his arms over his chest. “Am I lucky enough to have you as a neighbor?”
There’s a fine line between love and hate.

In Huckleberry Bay, Oregon, everyone knows that when it comes to Juniper “June” Snow – what you see is what you get. When you hire her construction company to do a job, it’s done right, on time, and on budget. When she’s your friend, she’s a ride-or-die who will support you no matter what. And when you’re her enemy…well, she can hold a grudge.

And she’s never forgotten how the tall, dark, and delicious Apollo Winchester hurt her so many years ago.

In a small town, it’s impossible to ignore someone who greets you with a death glare every time you meet. Apollo can’t recall why June hates him, but it doesn’t stop him from stirring her up every chance he gets. There’s something about her stubborn, “don’t mess with me” attitude that keeps him coming back for more. But June is his sister’s best friend and permanently on the “off-limits” list.

June puts aside her war with Apollo and hires him to work on her most important project, the renovation of a chapel into her dream home. She wants the best…and Apollo is the best . . . on the job site and in her bed. He won’t turn down the chance to spend more time with June, especially when it’s clear that she wants him as much as she hates him. Proximity leads to opportunity, and opportunity leads to steamy times between the sheets.

But a mystery threatens June and Apollo will protect her and their growing connection, no matter the cost.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

June

January 1, 2000

* * *

Dear Diary,

Well, here we are. I don’t really know what to write, but I promised Luna and Sarah that, as of today, I’d start keeping a diary with them. We found a really old leather book up in the lighthouse a couple of weeks ago that turned out to be a journal from some old lady, and I guess it’s kind of cool. Luna only wants to read it when the three of us are together, one journal entry at a time, so it’ll take us about thirty years to read it all, but that’s okay.

I just don’t know what to say. I mean, I’m only thirteen years old, and there’s not much of anything interesting going on. Well, I guess that isn’t true.

Apollo pissed me off. Again.

Here’s hoping my grandma doesn’t find this because she’d twist my ear for swearing. She says a lady shouldn’t use such language, but I hear her swear all the time. And, besides, I’m no lady. We all know it.

Anyway, Apollo is a jerk. He may be Luna’s big brother, and she loves him because he’s related to her, but he can suck it. I think he makes it his life’s ambition to hurt my feelings. He may be named after a god, and he definitely looks like one, but he’s an ass. I can’t believe that I ever had a crush on him. He humiliated me! So, now, he gets my wrath for all eternity.

Lucky him.

Oh, and I get to start woodshop this semester at school. I’m really excited. I like to build things. I know that the boys all sneer at me, but I’m way better at it than they are! They’re just jealous. Losers. I’ll show them. Girls can make stuff out of wood and fix cars and do whatever the hell we want.

Grandma’s calling me down for dinner, so I better go. I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.

-Juniper

Chapter One

June

“Now, that is pretty.”

With my hands on my hips, I stand on the sidewalk in front of the chapel that I bought six months ago and smile. The leaves in Huckleberry Bay are starting to turn with the change of summer into fall, flanking my freshly painted white building with orange and red and yellow. It’s gorgeous.

The smell of salt from the ocean, which is less than a mile away, is heavy in the air, and I tilt my head up to the sunshine, close my eyes, and take a long, deep breath.

I love the sunshine, the bright blue sky, and most of all, I love that my schedule is finally lightening up enough that I can spend time renovating my own place rather than working on other construction projects.

Not that I’m complaining about the work. I’m grateful that the small construction company I started a few years ago has taken off as well as it has. But I’m dying to really dig into this chapel and rehab it into my own home.

“Nice paint job.”

My eyes open at the sound of the voice that never fails to make my knees weak, but before I turn to Apollo Winchester, I school my face into just this side of a snarl.

“What are you doing here?”

He doesn’t scowl. He doesn’t look confused. He just grins.

“You invited me, remember?”

“I must have been psychotic at the time because I can guaran-damn-tee you that I didn’t invite you to my home.” Of course, I did. I just don’t know how to interact with Apollo without giving him a hard time.

“You need me.” He pauses, a smirk still hovering over his sexy-as-sin lips before continuing, “To do your electrical.”

Doesn’t that just grate on the nerves? I’m going to have to run new electrical through the whole house, and Apollo is the best electrician in the county—maybe the state—and I won’t settle for anything but the best when it comes to my place.

“Right.” I roll my eyes and turn to walk up the steps to the double doors that lead into the chapel. Once I unlock the door, I push inside and take a deep breath. It smells a little musty and a little like saw dust. “Come on in, and I’ll go over my plans with you.”

“I can’t wait.”

I avoid eye contact as I turn on lights and then open a few of the windows to let in some fresh air.

“I haven’t been here in about a week so it’s stuffy.”

It’s one big room with a beautiful hardwood floor, which is original to the building, as well as a few wooden pews and an altar.

Those things will go or be repurposed, of course.

“No blood stain,” Apollo murmurs and then raises his head to meet my gaze.

“No. I had a company come in and clean the blood.”

He nods, and we’re both thinking of Sarah, whose ex-husband almost killed her in this chapel six months ago. It was a terrifying day, but my dear friend is safe, and her ex is tucked away in a maximum-security prison, so we can all put that behind us.
She didn’t think she’d ever come home again.

When Sarah Bitterman left Huckleberry Bay at the tender age of nineteen, newly married to a much older man, she had every intention of coming home to visit. Sadly, she quickly learned that was out of the question.

Until her husband throws her out with only the clothes on her back and finally sets Sarah free.

Coming back to the small seaside town has been the hardest thing she’s ever done. Facing those who loved her the most and think she turned her back on them is almost unbearable. But she needs her two best friends, and she’s longed to make amends with her little brother.

Huckleberry Bay is like the art in her soul. And now she can put down roots and begin to heal.

Tanner Hilleman knew it was a mistake to let the love of his life go all those years ago, and he’s never stopped thinking about her. Now that she’s home, while he’s giving her the space she needs, he’s also determined to make Sarah see that they belong together.

Unfortunately, Sarah’s past has followed her to Huckleberry Bay and threatens to destroy everything she loves. Will she and Tanner survive it? Or will it tear them apart for good?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Sarah

January 1, 2000

* * *

Dear Diary,

I hope my parents don’t find this journal. Mama would probably tell me that it’s a waste of time, and I should concentrate on other things, but I think it’s fun, and it’s the only thing that I have for myself.

June, Luna, and I were up in the lighthouse, in our special place, the other day, and we found a super old diary from the 1800s. We started to read it but then decided to only read one entry at a time so that it lasts longer.

We also agreed to start our own diaries. So, here I am. What do people talk about in these things? I don’t want to say anything too personal. What if Mama does find it? I’d be in deep trouble.

Not that I won’t be, anyway. She’ll come up with a reason to be mad at me. That’s just how life is here.

I wish I could go live with Luna or June.

Anyway, the Christmas break is almost over, and it will be time to go back to school. I don’t mind it so much. I’ll get to see Tanner every day! I know he’s a whole year older than me, but he’s so handsome. And he’s really nice to me. Sometimes, he walks me home from school. Isn’t that the sweetest thing ever? I hope he had a nice Christmas.

I can hear Scott arguing with Dad again, so I’d better go see what’s up before it gets too bad. I love my little brother, and I hate that Dad can be too hard on him. He’s just a kid!

I hope I can write in this diary often. It feels kind of good to write down what I’m thinking.

TTYL,

Sarah

Chapter One

Sarah

“I forgot how busy it is in the spring,” I say to my coworker, Sunny, as I grab a wet towel to wipe off a table. “We always think of summer as being the busy season, but it’s really all the time.”

“These days it is.” She taps on the computer screen, sending an order back to the kitchen. “And I’m grateful because that means we don’t have to lay anyone off during the slow season anymore.”

“There is that.” I shoot her a smile and hurry over to clean the table and then pass by another table to take an order.

I’ve been back in Huckleberry Bay for just over six months, and every single minute of every day has been a blessing.

I’m out of an abusive marriage.

I’m back in my hometown.

Life is finally the way I’ve daydreamed it would be for more than a decade.

“Hey, Sarah.”

I’ve had two best friends since I was a child, and one of them just walked through the door.

“Hi, June. What can I getcha?”

“The usual,” she says with a sigh. “Hey, when you get home later, can you help me tear apart Grandma’s bathroom? She says there’s a leak, and I can’t find it. I need someone who doesn’t have arthritis in her back to hold the flashlight for me.”

“Sure.” I give her a smile and then cross to the computer to tap in June’s order of a cheeseburger and onion rings.

I’ve lived with June and her grandma in the big Victorian house on the cliffs outside of town since my apartment burned down, along with my friend Wolfe’s auto mechanic garage, late last fall. And I’m grateful to June and Annabelle for giving me a place to live.

I really am.

But I do not want to help tear apart anything when I’m off shift. I want to go home—somewhere quiet—elevate my swollen feet, and curl up with a glass of wine and my cat.

Still, I’ll do what she asks because I live in the house rent-free, and it’s the least I can do.

The thing is, my friends, June and Luna, along with the whole town really, have been nothing but welcoming and supportive since I arrived last fall, and I’ll do whatever it takes to show my gratitude.

Even if it means giving up my solitude for a little while.

“Hey, did you hear that we were able to finally get the insulation and drywall up in Luna’s inn?” June asks as I slide her basket of food over to her. “It actually looks like a dwelling now.”

“Luna mentioned it.” I grin and wipe my hands on my apron. “I’ve been working on renderings for the website, and I think I’m going to go over there one evening when you’re all finished so I can soak in the atmosphere. I need to get started on the paintings for the guest suites.”

“It’s so awesome that you’re doing the artwork,” June says around an onion ring. “It’s going to be killer.”

“Luna’s come up with some fun themes for the suites, and I can’t wait to get started. I’m sorry, I might be working late. We had another girl call out.”
Luna Winchester’s life is firmly entrenched in the coastal town of Huckleberry Bay, Oregon. A fourth-generation lightkeeper, Luna is carrying on the Winchester tradition by tending to the lighthouse. Plus, she’s decided to renovate a long-abandoned building on the property and make it a B&B, Luna’s Light. Surrounded by family and her two childhood best friends, her life is full.

Wolfe Conrad is in hiding, and he’s come to Huckleberry Bay to heal. A career-ending accident on the track nearly took his life, and now he seeks refuge to try and build a new one. The quaint town’s slow pace rattles the man whose first love is fast cars—and then there’s the beautiful innkeeper, who rattles him in different ways.

Falling in love with Luna definitely isn’t part of Wolfe’s plan. Local legends that tell of unrequited love and despair? Unbelievable. But stranger things have happened, like two strangers falling in love…

We found the coolest thing today! Sarah, June, and I were in the lighthouse, in our secret place, and the floorboard creaked. June was able to pry it up. There was a diary inside! A really, really old one that starts in 1871. So, it inspired the three of us to start diaries, too. And what better day to start than the first day of a new millennium?

So far, we’ve only read the first entry. We decided that we would read one at a time, and we all have to be together when we do. Today’s was sad. The woman who wrote it, Rose, talks about how she misses her man. He set sail and promised to be home in three months, but he’s been gone for almost a year. She sounded so heartbroken.

I guess they couldn’t just call each other way back in the olden times.

I said it reminded me of one of the romance novels I just read. Of course, I have to hide those from my mom. She’d say thirteen isn’t old enough to read those books, but they’re so good!

Anyway, the diary is totally awesome. We put it safely back in its hiding spot so we can just pull it out and read it whenever we’re up in the lighthouse. It’s been really rainy and stormy lately, so we haven’t been up there very much. Dad says it’s too dangerous. But when we get a break in the weather, we’ll go back up and read some more.

I wonder if Rose is the ghost I see here sometimes. I see her up on what Dad calls the widow’s walk, and other times, I feel her next to me like she’s trying to tell me something. Once when I felt her, I saw that Wolfe was up in a tree, and he almost fell. It was so weird! But I’m not scared of her. I have to live here, at the lighthouse, with my parents, so it’s good that she doesn’t scare me. That would suck.

Okay, I think that’s enough for my first entry. I’ll write more when there’s something good to talk about. I can’t wait to read more of Rose’s diary!

Love,

Luna

Chapter One

Wolfe

“It’s my distinct pleasure to introduce a man who needs no introduction at all,” Mayor Rebecca Schlinger says with a wide grin as she looks over at me. “Our own hometown pride and joy, Wolfe Conrad!”

It seems that all two thousand and nine citizens of Huckleberry Bay are in the crowd, cheering and waving their arms and flags as I take the stage and smile out at them.

It’s the Fourth of July Festival in my hometown of Huckleberry Bay, and I’m here as a celebrity guest—and to drive in the dirt races for charity.

I’m used to loud crowds and exuberant fans, but this hits a little differently. Okay, a lot differently.

Because this is home, and the crowd cheering right now is full of friends and people I’ve known for most of my life. I lit out of here as fast as I could after high school, obsessed with cars and driving fast. Hell, I haven’t even been back home since my parents died almost two years ago, within months of each other. My dad died from cancer, and my mom passed from what I’m sure was a broken heart.

Yet, still, the people here are proud of me.

And there’s nothing like the Oregon coast in the summertime.

“Thank you,” I call out into the microphone, and the crowd starts to quiet so they can hear me. “It’s always good to be home, and I’m glad I could be here for this. You know, when I was a kid, this festival was my favorite time of year. We’re going to put on an exciting race for you all today and raise some money for the local food bank while we’re at it.”

I let my gaze skim over the familiar faces, pausing when I see Luna Winchester. I lift a brow at her, and she smiles.

It’s been a lot longer than two years since I saw Luna.

I send her a wink and then get back to the task at hand.

Racing. My lifeblood. It’s always a thrill to drive, but doing it in my hometown? Well, there’s an added layer of adrenaline in that mix.

“I hope I see some familiar faces tonight at the pub crawl.”

The famous pub crawl in a town the size of Huckleberry Bay consists of roughly three bars, but it’ll be fun to unwind after the race.

I hurry down the steps at the side of the stage to where my best friend, Zeke, is waiting.

“Why don’t we come here more often?” he asks as we hurry toward the track. I slip my sunglasses onto my face and try to ignore the unfamiliar nervousness that’s set up residence in my stomach.
