The time has come for a curse that has plagued three clans for 20 years to meet its fate at the hands of three women who hold the key to its destruction.

Bliss, a healer and with no noble birth, strikes a bargain with Lord Lochlann to wed his son Rannick, the worst cursed lord out of the three, and produce the heir he desperately craves so that the Clan MacClaren will live on despite the fact there are those who wish to see its demise. She cannot fail, for it will mean her sister Annis, will be forced to wed Lord Brogan, the condemned lord and she worries her sister, Elysia will be offered to the silent lord. She refuses to see her sisters suffer such terrible fate.

The bargain is not an easy one to fulfill. Rannick refuses to wed, having lost three wives to the curse. He swears that if his father weds him once again without his permission, he will see the woman dead before the curse can take her.
If that is not enough of an obstacle for Bliss, there is the gossip that spreads about Lord Rannick. His endless quest to find a way to break the curse has descended him into madness. Has made him a cohort of the devil. Has robbed him of his soul.

With the curse stalking her every step of the way, a husband who would welcome death to see the cursed finally ended, and a mystery group intent on seeing it all end with the death of the three cursed lords and their wives… how will she ever survive and help her sisters?
The exciting conclusion of Highland Intrigue Trilogy!

Author’s note: This trilogy and prequel are best read in order; Highland Intrigue A Prequel, The Silent Highlander, The Condemned Highlander & Highlander The Cursed Lord.

Books in Series:

Highland Intrigue Trilogy Series by Donna Fletcher

Books by Author:

Donna Fletcher

CHAPTER 1

Bliss had forced herself to stop crying not long after she had left Clan Loudon. Tears would do her no good. She had to stay strong if she were to survive, and she would survive. She had to. She had to keep her sisters, Elysia and Annis, safe and see them wed to good men who would treat them well.

She prayed that Elysia had paid heed to her advice and gained the courage to ask Saber, a farmer of good strength and character, to marry her. He would keep her well protected. It made it easier that Elysia and Saber favored each other. That alone would be a good start to the marriage.

“It won’t be long now until we arrive.”

Bliss turned to Lawler, riding beside her. He had been kind to her the two days they had spent traveling. She had thought him of advanced years when first meeting him, his white hair a good indication of it and the few wrinkles attesting to it as well. But the sharpness of his blue eyes and the strength he’d displayed the last two days made her think he was of less years than she had first thought.

“You worry for your sisters, but there is no need. You struck a good bargain, and they will wed who they choose because of you,” Lawler said. “You are a wise and brave woman.”

“Some would argue otherwise since few if any would agree to wed the cursed lord,” Bliss said, recalling the bargain she had put forth to Lawler.

She would not only wed Lord Rannick, the worst cursed lord out of the three lords whose families had had a powerful curse cast upon them around twenty years ago, but she would need to get with child. It had been the only plausible solution to prevent a forced marriage of her sister Annis to Lord Brogan, the condemned lord. He was the one who death did not touch. She also had wanted to make certain Elysia would be able to wed a man of her choosing and not take a chance that she’d be forced to wed a man who would treat her badly, since she was such a sweet, kind soul. As long as Bliss could keep her sisters from harm, that was all that had mattered to her.

When Lawler failed to comment on her remark, she said, “Tell me Lord Rannick is not a bad man.”

Lawler’s body stiffened and his shoulders squared. “I will not lie to you. Lies will do you no good in this situation. Lord Rannick was once an honorable man. He made the most of his first marriage to Lady Cecilia that his father had arranged for him. He treated her well and when she got with child he was pleased and looked forward to the birth of their first bairn. He was devastated when they both died in childbirth. He did not wish to wed again, fearing the woman’s fate, but his father ignored his wishes and wed him to Phedra. They were married barely a few months when a riding accident claimed her life. He refused to wed after that and once again his father ignored his wishes. It was after a vicious fight with his father that Lord Rannick went to meet his new wife, three days after they’d been wed through proxy, and tell her that he would not consummate or commit to the marriage. He did not have a chance to say a word. She collapsed upon seeing him and he caught her in his arms, and there was where she died.”

“How horrible for him and those women,” Bliss said.

She was a healer and well understood that death struck unexpectedly in childbirth, accidents happened, but a young woman dying for no apparent or understandable reason made her wonder the cause of her sudden death.

“More horrible than you can imagine. Lord Rannick departed the clan not long after his wife was laid to rest. He traveled to foreign shores in search of a way to end the dreadful curse and in so doing—he lost his soul. His father sent men to bring him home and it took most all of them to capture him and forcibly restrain him to accomplish the task.”

“Lord Lochlann was shocked when he laid eyes on his son. His skin had deepened from the heat of the sun in some of the heathen lands he had traveled, and a scar on his cheek marred his once fine features. No one knows how he got it, he never speaks of it. Many believed he sought death, no longer wanting to live with the curse, but the curse refused him a reprieve. He’s doomed, as are his heirs to suffer the curse.” Lawler turned silent for a moment. “There is something I feel you should know, though I was ordered not to tell you. But I feel you have a right to know, to be prepared. Lord Rannick told his father that if he forced another wife on him,” —Lawler hesitated— “he would kill her and save her the trouble of whatever miserable death would surely befall her.”
Annis is on a quest to save her sister, Bliss, and the only way she can do it is to break a twenty-year old curse.
Annis does not intend to let anyone frighten her off or stop her from doing what she must to save her sister. Not the suspicious people in the small village where she stops to seek information, not the heavy mist that descends like sentinels on the hills, not the beady, black-eyed ravens that keep watch, and especially not Brogan, the condemned lord. The only way she can make sure of that is to let him join her on her quest. Though, it is not much of an option, since he insists.
Brogan of the Clan MacRae is on a quest to save the determined, willful Annis from herself. She refuses to accept the truth… the curse that had been cast on the three clans twenty odd years ago cannot be broken. He and the other two cursed lords, Odran and Rannick, have tried. If they failed, surely Annis would, and she could possibly be harmed in the process. He had to admit she had caught his interest when he had first met the fiery red-haired beauty, a memorable meeting for sure, since he had been covered in blood, and she faints at the sight of blood, which led to her falling into his arms. Be that as it may, he was here to make sure no harm came to her, see her through her futile quest, and return her home. However, there was another reason he had chased after her, and when she discovered his secret, they would be no containing her fury.
All does not go as either Annis or Brogan planned, and when the witch finally shows herself, it sends the couple on another quest where long-kept lies and secrets abound. Brogan does all he can to keep her safe, and Annis discovers that she is not only fighting to save her sister, but she is also fighting to free Brogan from the curse.
Through it all, the couple find something neither were looking for—love.
Author’s note: There is a prequel to this trilogy… Highland Intrigue: A Prequel. You get to meet most of the characters in the trilogy and see how Brogan and Annis first met and find out what brought them to this point. Also, while Annis and Brogan’s love story concludes in this book, there is a story arc/mystery that runs through to book three, Highlander: The Cursed Lord.
She had been aware of it for a while now. Not only had she heard the footfalls, but she had sensed someone. There could be any number of reasons someone followed her, the most worrisome being that someone meant her harm.

Annis shifted the narrow bundle on her back with a lift of the single strap that crossed her chest and ran over her shoulder. Once done, she hoisted her garments just enough so she could run unimpeded if necessary.

It had been over a week since she left Clan Loudon to start her quest. She had taken precautions on the route she traveled to avoid the warriors Chieftain Emory was bound to send in search of her. She had no intentions of allowing anyone to interfere with her plans. She intended to be successful. She had no choice, her sister’s life depended on it.

She heard the rustle of leaves not far behind her. The harvest season certainly could produce a good wind now and again but not even a light breeze stirred the air today. She had two choices, keep walking, and wait to see the person’s intentions, or she could run to put distance between whoever followed behind her. Or did she dare…

Annis stopped abruptly, spun around, and ordered, “Show yourself, you coward!”

Her hand went to the hilt of the dagger secured in a sheath at her waist and her glance remained steady on her surroundings. A small tingle of fear ran through her, but she had learned through her own misadventures that a touch of fear proved useful. It kept one alert, and that alertness caught a movement through the branches of a large, gnarled pine tree. The branches had grown strangely, giving the tree a beastly appearance and for a moment, Annis worried what it might spit out.

Annis’s hand fell away from the dagger as soon as the woman stepped from behind the tree. Her long, braided, white hair suggested she was a woman of older years, but her face held few lines and wrinkles, and though she was tall, she had no stoop to her shoulders. It was the sight of her well-worn, blackthorn walking stick that poked a memory.

“Cumina?”

She didn’t know the woman well, having only gone a couple of times with her sister Bliss when she sought Cumina’s knowledge. A knowledge that was often sought in secret since many believed her a witch.

“Aye, it is me,” Cumina said, her steps soft and graceful as she approached Annis. “I didn’t mean to alarm you, but when I heard you left on a quest, I had to speak with you. I waited until you completely avoided the men following you so that we could talk without worry.”

Annis spotted a fallen tree and pointed to it. “A short respite would do me good.”

Cumina sat along with Annis. “You are much different from your two sisters, Bliss and Elysia.”

“Aye, so I’ve been told many times,” Annis said with a smile. “My two sisters are kind and sweet where I have a blunt nature, my all too often unfettered words proving it true.”

“You have a free, spirited nature.” Cumina smiled. “As bold and full of fire as your untamed, flaming red hair.”

Annis grinned as she tugged at a strand of the massive red ringlets that sprang from her head. “Untamed, unruly, does as it will—” she laughed. “It does sound like me.”

“Be proud of who you are. Not many have such abundant courage,” Cumina said. “I know Bliss is very proud of you.”

“Bliss is far braver than me, sacrificing herself and marrying the worst cursed lord of the three so that I wasn’t forced to wed one of them and making sure Elysia wasn’t forced to wed. But Bliss will not survive long if I do not succeed in my quest. The third and last wife of Lord Rannick of the Clan MacClaren, before Bliss, died when she first laid eyes upon him. I pray Bliss will survive long enough for me to help her. Can you tell me anything about this curse that has condemned three men to suffer such hellish lives?” Annis asked anxiously.

“I will tell you what I told Bliss. The most powerful curse there is—is a death curse. When a person uses their last breath to curse someone, it releases tremendous power. Most times the curse is made because of a wrong that was done to someone and the only way to end the curse is to right that wrong.”

Annis nodded. “That is something I have heard over and over again.”

“What you haven’t heard, and many don’t understand, about the curse is that it was not cast with a hateful heart. It was cast with a loving heart and meant to protect and keep safe an innocent bairn. When the king ordered the complete destruction of the Clan MacWilliam, the barely two-day-old bairn had no chance to survive. Her mother, Lady Aila, used the only thing left to protect her daughter.”
All is not what it seems. Don’t trust anyone. The warning comes too late for Elysia.
Alone and frightened, Elysia hurries to do as her two sisters urged: ask Saber, who works one of the crofts, to wed her. She favors him and believes he feels the same about her. His throat is healing from an injury, and his voice is slowly returning, with her help. Elysia is no healer, but having helped her sister Bliss, the healer of their clan, she has a bit of healing knowledge.
It is the least she can do, when her two sisters are sacrificing so much more. Annis is off on a mission to see what can be done to save Bliss from a marriage she agreed to, so Annis and Elysia would not be forced to wed, but will surely be the death of her due to a twenty-year-old curse. A marriage to Saber would keep Elysia safe from those seeking to take advantage of her, now that she doesn’t have the safety of her sisters.
To her surprise, Saber refuses her offer, and to make matters worse, the chieftain of the clan presents her with three clan warriors and gives her two weeks to pick one to wed. She does not want to wed a warrior. She wants a tender and quiet man like Saber, not a man who lives by the sword.
Saber got lost in Elysia’s soft green eyes when they first met, and she attempted to hide behind him, an easy task, since she is a wee bit of a thing. She has a kind and sweet nature that entices. Not able to get her out of his thoughts, he seeks her healing skills more often than he should. But marriage to her is out of the question. He tries to stay away from her but fails.
Fate or, perhaps, it is the curse that intervenes and unites Saber and Elysia in marriage. They briefly find happiness together... until the truth is revealed.
Nothing about Saber is real, not even his name. Who is this man she calls husband? Who is this stranger she has wed? And how will she ever survive a marriage to him?
Unexpected danger threatens the couple, and Saber will do anything to keep his wife safe from harm. But Elysia has a secret that she fears will fuel the curse and worries what will happen when Saber finds out.
Her only hope is that her sister, Annis, will be successful at breaking the curse before the curse claims them all.
Author note: There is a prequel to this trilogy... Highland Intrigue. You get to meet most of the characters in the trilogy and see what brought them to this point. Also, while Saber and Elysia’s love story concludes in this book, there is a story arc/mystery that runs through to book three, Highlander, The Cursed Lord.

Chapter 1

Elysia kept her steps swift for fear if she slowed even for a moment, she would lose her courage. She had to stay strong no matter how badly her stomach churned or how wildly her heart beat. There was no one left to protect her. Tears rushed to her eyes and she brushed them away, annoyed with herself. This was no time for weakness. Her two sisters had shown courage and it was time she did the same.

Only a few days ago life had been good. Then the two men arrived in the village, Lawler and Cadell, and everything had changed. But they were not to blame—the curse was to blame.

Elysia hugged her wool cloak close, keeping her steps sure-footed and paying no heed to the crunch of the autumn leaves beneath her feet. She had made a choice and she had to see this task done, though it paled in comparison to what her sister Bliss had done and what her sister Annis had set out to do. And it had all started with the curse. A curse cast over twenty years ago.

She wished she was as courageous as her two sisters. Both had made choices that far surpassed anything she was capable of doing. Her choice offered possible happiness, whereas, Annis’s choice proved dangerous, and Bliss’s choice could prove fatal.

The cottages along with the village faded behind her. It would not take long for her to reach her destination and once she got there… her steps faltered. She did not know what she would say or if she would have the courage to say anything at all.

She pressed her hand against her roiling stomach. Did she really think she had the courage to do this? And how did it benefit anyone but her?

She would be safe if things went as her sisters had been certain they would. But how did that help her sisters? Annis went off on a quest to find the witch of the hills to see if there was some way the curse could be broken. It had to be if Bliss were to survive. Bliss had agreed to wed Lord Rannick of the Clan MacClaren, the cursed lord, to keep Annis out of a forced marriage and in so doing had condemned herself to death. The curse had been cast against three clans some twenty years ago, but it was the descendants of the Clan MacClaren that was cursed to suffer the worst. Lord Rannick had lost three wives in a short time and a bairn as well. No one survived a marriage to him and in his own quest to quell the curse, it was believed he had lost his humanity, that he was more animal than human.

The thought shivered Elysia. How did Bliss survive such dreadful circumstances? And how did Annis survive her quest all on her own? She shook her head. Annis was stubborn and determined. But how did she survive a solitary trek through the woods to find someone many claimed was nothing more than a myth? But what choice had they if Bliss were to survive?

Elysia wiped at the single tear that had trailed down her cheek. There was a good chance she would lose both her sisters. She realized that was the true reason why Bliss and Annis had cautioned her to seek protection, though neither had voiced it. They feared she would be left on her own, all alone, with no one to look after her.

The thought roiled her stomach so badly she had to stop. With her hand once again pressed against her stomach, she sat on a toppled tree branch in hopes of calming her unease.

She could not say she hadn’t thought of marriage. She hoped one day to find love and have a family. Unfortunately, there were no men in the village she found appealing… until Saber.

Her cheeks heated at the thought of the man, and she smiled. Saber was nothing like she sought in a husband or that she believed she would find appealing. Most importantly, he was too large. He devoured her short height and his width was enough for her to hide behind, something she had already done—quite by accident—when trying to keep out of Lawler and Cadell’s sight as they searched for a wife for the cursed lord. His fine features were quite captivating as were his green eyes, though his eyes were bolder in color than her own soft green eyes. While she hoped for a quiet man, one not boisterous in nature or speech, she felt for Saber, he having lost his voice from a wound that left a scar across his throat.

She had learned some healing ways from Bliss, her sister being a healer. She had Saber drinking a soothing concoction and taking bramble berry syrup that she hoped would help heal his throat and fully restore his voice to him. She was sure when he did speak it would be with an unassuming voice. If there was one thing she dreaded in a husband, it was that he would be a warrior who favored the sword and battle. Warriors were far too commanding and demanding to be good husbands.
