GRIFFIN
I always felt I wasn’t wired like my peers, but when my brother, Kellan, gave me three terms—ace, aromantic, and demi—I had possible names for it. Those three words have been on my mind ever since, as has my brother’s best friend, Josh Westbrook. It’s been cool getting to know him and spending time together, just us. He makes me feel something I never thought I’d be able to feel. When we end up alone in a cabin with only one bed, all my crossed wires finally connect and point toward being demi and wanting him.

JOSH
Griff and I were never supposed to be more than friends, but I like him more and more. I like being the reason he smiles, and…yeah, I enjoy making him writhe with pleasure too. But Griff doesn’t hook up casually, and I swore off love a long time ago. Still, we keep finding ourselves drawn together, a shared loneliness and a deep want guiding us. Kellan’s afraid I’ll hurt Griff. Frankly, I am too. My past is still an open wound that keeps me from getting too close.

One thing is becoming clear, though—my Grumpy Griff is making me break my own rules. He says he’s never known his place in the world, but I do. It’s with me. The only way for us to move forward is for me to stop looking back…before I lose sight of him for good.
The past few weeks had been… Hell, I wasn’t even sure I had a word for what they had been. It all happened in this whirlwind I still hadn’t caught up with.

My best friend, Chase, and my brother, Kellan, were in love. They’d been sneaking around behind my back. I discovered the truth along with the rest of Havenwood—our hometown.

That was just the beginning of a lot of drama, but it was most of what I focused on. Taking care of Kellan had been my goal his whole damn life. If I was being honest, I would admit I always took on that responsibility when it came to Chase as well, and now they wouldn’t need me anymore. They had each other, and while it had come as a surprise in some ways, it hadn’t in others. I’d been pissed they’d lied, but I was happy for them. I just couldn’t help feeling slightly hurt too.

Knock, knock, knock.

I frowned at the sound of someone at my door. I wasn’t expecting anyone, and for a moment, I considered ignoring it, but then got annoyed at myself for the thought. I was pouting, feeling sorry for myself because the two people I loved the most in the world were happy? That was fucking bullshit.

So I went over to open the door, only to see Josh, Kellan’s best friend, standing there. His wavy, chocolate-brown hair was a mess like it often was. It looked like he’d run his fingers through it, mussing it and making it stand on end.

“Hey, man. What’s up?” I liked Josh a lot. He was a good guy. The only thing that bothered me about him sometimes was his cavalier attitude toward sex, though I didn’t know why I cared so much. It wasn’t as if it bothered me when our other friends talked about hooking up.

Still, as much as I liked Josh, he and I never hung out just the two of us, so it was a little odd he was there. Maybe if he’d stopped by the bar or arrived before the rest of the crew got there, but he’d never come to the house to see me.

“Not much. I just came over to kidnap you.”

“Huh?” Kidnap me?

“I’d like to go on a hike, and I was thinking…who can I get to go on a hike with me? Oh, I know, I’ll go drive Griffin Caine crazy because that’s the job of a brother’s best friend.”

He’d never tried to drive me crazy before. Well, not on purpose. He’d never asked to go hiking with me before either. It was one of my favorite activities. I loved being outdoors, but again, it wasn’t something Josh and I did together.

“Come on, man. Go hiking with me. It’s not often I beg, but I’ll do it. I’ll deny it if you ever tell anyone, of course.”

Damned if I didn’t chuckle. The truth was, I needed to get out of the house. I could use some fresh air, so I said, “Come in. Let me get changed.”

Josh nodded and waited while I went to my room for a different pair of jeans and to put on better shoes. A few minutes later, we were climbing into his car and he was driving us away.

“This is a first.” I wasn’t sure why I was mentioning it.

“Eh, there’s always a first for everyone.” Then he waggled his eyebrows, I assumed at the sexual innuendo, and I rolled my eyes.

We chatted about random things over the twenty-minute drive to one of the state parks that had good hiking trails. We parked, and he grabbed a backpack out of the back.

“Shit, I didn’t bring anything.”

“No worries. I got water and snacks and shit like that.”

Well, that was…nice.

We started along the trail, and it was slightly awkward at first. We were quiet, and I tried to figure out what to say. But then Josh began talking first, asking me about hiking, and what made me want to open a bar, and pointing out birds along the way. The longer we hiked, the more comfortable I got. The outdoors always had a way of doing that for me.

We stopped at a spot where the trail opened up, near a picnic table. A local craftsman had made a bunch and donated them to the park to give people a place to rest along the trails.

Josh handed me a bottle of water and took one for himself. “You hungry?”

“Nah, I’m good.”

“It’s kind of weird, huh? Chase and Kell?”

I nodded. There was no denying it was.

“I’m happy for them, though.”

“Yeah, me too.”

Josh picked at the paper on his bottle. “I’m an only child. It never bothered me, but something about you and Kellan made me start wishing I had a brother. I know you guys drove each other crazy, but you would do anything for each other too. That’s special.”
Callum:
A gay guy walks into a straight bar and notices the hottest man he’s ever seen.
Why am I not surprised my life sounds like the beginning of a bad joke? First, my ex cheated on me, and I went running to Havenwood and the mom I have a complicated relationship with. Then, there’s Knox, the gorgeous lumberjack I don’t stand a chance with. To top it off, he’s more than just a pretty face, and I start to fall for him. Knox is kind, funny, honorable, quickly becoming my best friend, and unfortunately, straight with a capital S.

Knox:
My life has taken a few unexpected turns lately. First, the new guy in town, Callum, has me strangely confused. Then my son, Logan, comes to live with me. He connects with Callum instantly, and I do too. Before we know it, he’s become a daily fixture in our lives, making us laugh, calling me his lumberjack and making this foreign warmth spread inside me.
It doesn’t matter that I’ve never been with a guy before—one kiss from Cal, and it’s clear I’m bi. He turns me upside down. With every laugh, every conversation, every touch and exploration, I fall harder. Sneaking around isn’t ideal, but there’s a lot for us to consider. All I know is I need him. Life has a funny way of throwing a wrench into your plans, though, and things become a mess. But then I’m reminded that while nothing in life is guaranteed, not even love, what Callum and I have built is worth fighting for.

If I had known there were so many pretty, rugged boys in Mom’s hometown, I would have come here a lot sooner.

I always had a thing for rugged, even though most of the guys I dated weren’t that. Not that they weren’t out there, but I’d been in Los Angeles for years, and they felt different from this home-grown, small-town kind of guy. At least it did in my head.

And I didn’t want to think about LA. California led me to thoughts about Stan, and I didn’t want to go there. At all. Ever.

It was my first time at Griff’s—even the name was sexy. I’d just gotten into Havenwood, reserved my hotel room, then came here. It had been a long trip, and I was second-guessing myself like crazy. When things crashed and burned with Stan, I realized how tired I was of the whole LA scene. I needed something new, so I’d started the process to get my Virginia work licensing taken care of—I was a nurse practitioner—then quit my job, sold my condo, and got on the road.

I scanned the bar again. It wasn’t a large space—counter to the left, pool tables and darts to the right, and oh shit, a Pride flag in a straight bar? That was a first and not something I’d have expected from small-town Virginia. Maybe that was a good sign. I could use one.

My eyes found their way back to the group at the far end of the bar. A pretty, dark-haired guy sat on a blond’s lap, so again, looked like Griff’s was queer friendly. They were chatting with two women, and next to them stood a super-sexy guy with chocolate-brown hair, thick arms, and a Marilyn Monroe beauty mark. Definitely dude-bro but gorgeous.

The bartender had black hair, scruff along his jaw, and a kind smile. He had that whole rugged thing going on too, but my eyes skimmed past him to the knockout with the blond curls and the ginger on his arm—damn, two queer couples—before they landed on the last guy again. It was him I couldn’t look away from.

Black, messy hair, long-ish. He had it pushed back, but it fell into his face when he moved, which was really hot. Nice, kissable mouth, his lips not too thin but not too plump either. Black beard. But it was his eyes that really got me. They were this crisp, sparkling, almost translucent green…and they were looking at me like, Who in the fuck is this guy? And not, I want to bang the hell out of his guy.

Probably straight.

As I made my way through the space, I got a few strange looks. The people here might be gay friendly, but I was new, and wore eyeliner sometimes, so I assumed they were wondering what city I came from.

I made sure to give them all my best smile, because that was the way I worked. I got some frowns in return, and there were some whispers, but I held my head high and kept going.

There was an empty spot at the counter beside the blond with the twink on his lap.

The bartender approached me as I sat down. “Welcome to Griff’s. Can I getcha something?”

It was cute how he welcomed me. I was sure people knew every face in this town, except mine now, obviously. “Yes, please. I’d love a beer. What have you got on tap?”

He told me and I chose, watching as he filled the mug. I could feel eyes on me from the group. It probably wasn’t often eyeliner-wearing men showed up in Havenwood, so I got it, but it was still a little weird.

“You passing through?” Bartender asked.

“Nope,” I replied, not offering anything else. I definitely wasn’t telling him my boyfriend cheated on me and I came running to mommy—a mom I haven’t been close with in a long time. Oh, and who had no idea I was moving here.

“I’m Griffin,” he said, but I could tell it wasn’t in a flirty way, just a polite one.

“Callum,” I replied.

“Callum?” a guy asked from my right. I looked over to see blond curls. And wait. Was that…

“Are you Remington Monroe?”

Blond Curls tensed. Oh, someone was protective of his boy.

The redhead nodded.

“Wow…I feel like I stepped into Oz or something, but the good kind? I mean, I haven’t been attacked by an evil witch yet, and there are queer boys and pride flags in straight bars and a famous musician.” I dropped my head back. “Oh shit.”

“What?” Lap Twink asked.

“Did I get into a car accident and I’m dead? And here I thought I’d landed in a pretty-boy oasis. Fuck. Of course I’m dead.”

Griffin handed the beer over. A few of the guys laughed. My rugged lumberjack looked at me like I was an alien.

“You’re Callum?” Blond Curls asked again. “Mary Beth’s son?”
We were eighteen when I met Remington Monroe. I’d never seen anyone like him. He got onstage at the coffeehouse, armed with a guitar and corny jokes…but unable to hide his lonely eyes. When he sang, I was entranced. When we spent the night talking together, I knew my world would never be the same.

Remington
Music was my only passion until I met Lawson Grant. Our secret nights together, laughing and loving, were my anchor. My dreams of becoming a musician came true because of him, but in the process of achieving them, I lost Law.

Still, I never stopped missing him. When I can’t stay away any longer, I find myself in Havenwood, Law’s hometown. He isn’t exactly thrilled to see me, and I can’t say I blame him. But our connection is too powerful to be tamed, and soon we’re in over our heads again.
Our feelings for each other have never been in doubt, but we have a lot riding against us. I’m not out, my manager is giving me trouble, my family needs me, and my anxiety is worse than ever. Law’s there for me with his love, support, and a group of friends who accept me into the fold. But he can’t be a secret forever, and I can’t lose him again—even if it means risking it all and jeopardizing what’s always defined me—my music.

I didn’t know what it was about today that made me feel like I was losing it, but I did. I could feel the panic begin to rise inside me, claw and bite at me, until it succeeded in devouring me whole. Jesus, I hated this shit. Hated feeling this way and that it cast a shadow on something I loved so damn much.

It was the last show on a tour that, like the panic, was trying to break me apart until there was nothing left of me.

I wanted it to be over. It was brutal wanting something to end so much, something that was such a large part of who I was, that was sewn into the very fiber of not only Remington, but of Remy—the real me.

From where I stood offstage, I could hear the crowd chanting my name. It echoed around in my brain until it was all I could see, hear, and think. With a shaky hand, I opened the small travel container of anxiety meds and swallowed one down. I had two prescriptions, one that was daily in the morning, and another I could take at moments like these.

Some nights were better than others. Sometimes this beast didn’t try and wear me down, and others I didn’t believe there was a Remington without constant anxiety.

I just wanted…music. Well, that and—I shook my head. Going there would only make things worse. That was better saved for when I was alone and I could remember, miss, crave.

“Remington, you almost ready?”

There was a hand on my shoulder, and by the sound of—fuck, I couldn’t even remember his name—I could tell it wasn’t the first time he’d said my name.

“Yeah. One minute.” I took a few deep breaths. Stuffed the pill container into my pocket. Adjusted the guitar strap over my shoulder. Tried to slow my heartbeat and clear my head. Tried to remind myself that this was my dream, that there was nothing I loved as much as music.

Only that wasn’t true. Family aside, there was him. I would always love him more than anything.

Lawson

Before

“Do you want another latte?” Sara asked as she stood, pushing out of the chair beside me at the Charlottesville coffeehouse. I had only been at the University of Virginia for a couple of months, but I’d already fallen in with a group of friends. It had always been like that for me. I was a people person, never had trouble finding a way to feel comfortable in any situation. And if not, I was pretty good at faking it until I made it.

It was a gift no one really knew I possessed.

Maybe it was because things had always been easy for me. I’d never wanted for anything. I grew up in a two-parent home, with two siblings, more money than we needed, and a name everyone knew. I wasn’t blind to my privileges. They weren’t something I tried to take advantage of either, but I knew I had them.

“Yeah, sure. Thanks.” I reached for my wallet, but Sara waved off my offer.

“You got the last round. I’ll get this one.” She winked before walking away, shaking her ass as she went. She was smart and gorgeous, with long blonde hair and curves for days. She planned to go into politics and wanted to change the world. I had no doubt she would.

“She wants you,” Todd said from my other side.

“Who doesn’t?” I teased, waggling my eyebrows at him. The truth was, I was pretty sure she did, and yeah, I definitely wouldn’t complain. She was really confident, and I liked that about her.

“Cocky motherfucker.” Todd shook his head.

Sara came back a few minutes later, and the eight of us continued to talk and laugh and flirt.

I loved being out of Havenwood. Charlottesville wasn’t that far away, but here I wasn’t the Lawson Grant everyone had known their whole lives. There were no expectations, and people liked me for me and not because I was a Grant. My family name held power in Havenwood, not only because my dad had built an empire of grocery stores, of all things, but because Mom’s family had practically owned Havenwood from the beginning. She was old money. Her family had settled there after the Revolutionary War, having made money in Richmond.

About an hour later, just after nine, there was movement in my periphery. There was a small stage at the front of the coffeehouse, and they often had beat-poetry performers and musicians come in.

The guy onstage had messy, auburn hair and threadbare jeans that hung low on his hips, with holes in the knees. You could tell they weren’t jeans he bought to have that look, but that had grown that way with years of wear.

He turned his back to the crowd, fiddling with his guitar. His plain black T-shirt had the tag on the outside, which made me smile for some reason. I had no idea if he knew his shirt was on inside out. Somehow, I didn’t think he cared either way.
KELLAN
I wasn't supposed to fall for my older brother's best friend. Unfortunately, that ship sailed when I was a teenager, even though Chase Hawthorne always treated me like nothing more than a younger sibling. Things were worse after my parents died. Chase was sweet and supportive, which only strengthened my feelings for him. But then he'd act like I couldn't take care of myself, and that part didn't go over well with me. Yeah, I had a habit of screwing up. I'd always been the weird boy in our small town, but just like my big brother, he took overprotective to a new level. Until one night when I was eighteen and Chase and I hooked up. It was a ding to the ego that he left town right afterward. Ridiculously, I'm still not over him.

CHASE
I betrayed my best friend, Griffin, the night I messed around with Kellan. So I ran--first to the Marines, then into law enforcement. Ten years later, I'm back home, this time as a patrol officer rather than a troublemaker's son. Oh, and unable to keep my hands off Kellan Caine. There's always been something about him...the way he stands strong in who he is, even when he's standing alone. I'm trapped between someone I want more than anything and Griff, the guy who's like family to me. Yet the more time I spend with Kellan, the harder it becomes to deny there's something real between us.

With my dad stirring up trouble, and me going behind my best friend's back, everything's a mess. The more tangled the web gets, the more I realize I need Kellan. And that there might be something in the Hawthorne family history that'll make me lose both Kellan and Griffin for good.

Books in Series:

Havenwood Series by Riley Hart

Books by Author:

Riley Hart

PROLOGUE

Kellan

“Thanks for coming over to stay with him, man.” My brother gave Chase this dude-bro fist bump that made me roll my eyes.

“No biggie. I’ll watch some movies with the twerp or something,” Chase replied, and obviously that was a bit of a ding to the ego. It sucked being secretly in love with your older brother’s best friend…especially when he was very straight and thought of you as a twerpy little bro. Go me.

“I hope you realize how annoying it is that you talk about me like I’m not standing right here. Also, I graduated high school last weekend. I’m old enough to spend a weekend by myself. Hell, I could live by myself if I wanted to.” If I had money, or a job, but that was beside the point. What mattered was I didn’t need Chase Hawthorne babysitting me like I was a kid.

“Uh-oh. Is my baby brother mad?” Griffin taunted.

“He sounds mad to me. Poor Kellan,” Chase added.

I hated them. I hated them both. And by hate I meant love—Griff in the brotherly way, and Chase in the marry me one. He was so sexy. I loved his blond hair and how he kept it cut short. His brown eyes that were full of kindness, and those thick lashes and how they fell across his cheeks when he closed his eyes. And he was a nice guy, at least when he wasn’t teasing me with my brother.

“I despise both of you.” I crossed my arms, pouting. Yep, I was pouting, and I didn’t give a shit.

“Nah, you love us. Don’t smile, or you’ll ruin it. If you smile, Twerp, we’ll be able to tell you don’t really hate us,” Chase joked, so I flipped him off, stormed to my bedroom, and slammed the door. I could hear them laughing through the walls.

I plucked my headphones from the nightstand, slipped them on, and found one of my sad, sappy playlists. I quietly seethed over the fact that my brother had made Chase stay the weekend with me, while at the same time, I was glad I got to spend time with Chase. I was a bit of a mess; maybe always had been.

Griffin was overprotective. He’d been like that constantly, threatening bullies who gave me shit, taking the blame when I broke Mom’s favorite vase while trying to dance, when I so wasn’t a dancer. That was just how Griffin was. It was sewn into his DNA.

Then, when I was fourteen and Griffin nineteen, our parents died in a mugging gone bad—something that never happened in Havenwood—and it made things a million times worse. Griffin thought I was going to be hurt or attacked everywhere I went, or obviously at home too, if he or Chase weren’t there to protect me.

Yet not a day went by that I didn’t realize how lucky I was. Griffin had dropped everything for me. He’d quit college and come back home to Havenwood to raise a fourteen-year-old kid. He’d never once complained. Logically, I knew there wasn’t anything Griffin wouldn’t do for me, but fuck, he was stifling sometimes. He never let me fight my own battles. He protected me even when I didn’t need it. He kept me on a leash like I was a damn dog, afraid I’d die like our parents had, or, I don’t know, a fucking meteor would fall from the sky and crush me.

Sometimes I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Like I couldn’t be.

I couldn’t imagine what would happen when I told him I was gay. If someone looked at me wrong, Griffin would be all up in their shit. Chase too, but I didn’t mind that as much because it was sexy thinking of him defending my honor.

It was Chase Hawthorne who helped me realize I was gay. All it took was a shirtless hug from him when he was wearing a pair of swimming trunks. My dick took notice, and a whole lot of shit suddenly made sense.

Chase and my brother had been best friends for what felt like forever, even though Chase was a year younger. Chase had practically lived at our house when we were kids. Anytime his dad got drunk—and his dad got drunk a whole hell of a lot—Chase would show up at our place. Our parents had accepted Chase like he was their own, and when they died, he’d been Griffin’s second line of defense in taking care of me. Sometimes I wondered if something could be going on between them, but that made me want to curl in a ball and cry, so I pretended I never had those thoughts.

I was so stuck in little-brother zone, it wasn’t even funny. Even if Chase did like men, he would never like me.

So I pouted for an hour or so before my bedroom door was pushed open. Tugging off my headphones, I scowled at Chase. “You could at least knock. What if I was jacking it?”
