Camden
I’m a fun-loving guy who doesn’t take life too seriously. If there’s something I want, I go for it. Why not? Life’s too short to slide into the grave with regrets. But what I don’t do is go for men who aren’t out and proud. Been there, done that. Now, the only real way to get to me is to hurt my brother, but now that Sawyer’s happy, he doesn’t need me anymore. I’m stoked for him, I am! But seeing my friends and brother paired off is a constant reminder of the one thing I don’t have but desperately want: Jude. There’s something about this beautiful man who insists he’s not into men. Even with my rules about guys who aren’t out, I’ve craved him since the moment he stepped foot in Fever Falls. Now that he’s one of my best friends, that desire has raged into an inferno I’m powerless to tame.

Jude
I’ve always considered myself straight. I wrote off the whole fascination with my longtime best friend Rush as something weird that happened. I’ve been over him for a while now, and the person who helped me was Camden Burke, the flirty man who calls me beautiful. I used to hate getting compliments about my looks, but when Cam does it… Well, let’s say the way he makes me feel is my first clue that the thing with Rush wasn’t a one-time deal. I’m bisexual. And Cam makes me laugh and always listens. Since I’ve been in Fever Falls, I’ve become closer to him than I’ve ever been with anyone, Rush included. So when I decide to explore my newfound sexuality, who better than Cam to show me all the pleasures of being with a man? Only, we get caught, and now it’s not just Cam showing me what it’s like to be with a guy—he’s become my professor in what he calls Boyfriend 101, and apparently, I’m a very good student.
But unfortunately, I have some issues to work out and a few exam scores start slipping. Cam has already graded on a curve by breaking some of his rules to be with me. If I can’t get my act together, I’ll flunk out of Boyfriend 101, and I can’t imagine retaking the course with anyone but him.

I think I might be a stalker. I’m obsessed with this guy—Jude, I think his name is—who lives in our building. ~ Theo

My skin felt strangely too tight. Like if I moved wrong or stretched too much, it would crack open. I tried to ignore it. I mean, what the fuck? Why would I feel so weird just because Camden was at Fever with a woman? But I did feel all screwed up, off balance, and like my goddamned skin was splintering, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it one bit.

Fucking Camden Burke.

“Hey, gorgeous. Can I get a Long Island?” this bear asked me. That was a new term I’d learned—bear. If there was one thing I never thought I’d be doing, it would be working in a gay bar, using terms like bear, twink…oh, and otter.

My teeth automatically ground together when gorgeous sank in. I was pretty good at ignoring it most of the time. I’d learned to block out shit like that over the years. It wasn’t because he was a bear, or a dude, that it bothered me. I didn’t like it when women said shit like that to me either. It made me feel…weird. I didn’t know how else to explain it. I’d heard words like pretty and gorgeous enough in my life to figure it must be true, but I didn’t see it. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t think I was ugly, but I didn’t see anything special. It was just me.

The strangest part of the whole thing? It didn’t bother me when Camden said it. What I was still working out the pieces to was why.

“Yeah, coming up,” I replied to the guy. My jaw was still tight as I made his drink and took his payment. Every few minutes, my eyes would dart to the bar, where Cam sat with the blonde. All our friends were gone by now. Cam typically stayed later than everyone, hanging out and talking with me, but now he had a beautiful woman on his lap, and he was sucking on her neck instead of flirting with me.

The not-flirting-with-me thing was good.

Right? It was supposed to be good, but I felt any-fucking-thing other than that at the moment.

Since I’d moved to Fever Falls, Camden had become one of my best friends. Rush had so much shit going on with his career and Lincoln that Cam was who I hung out with, who I spent my time with, who I talked to. I didn’t want to lose his friendship, and I wasn’t into men, so the not-flirting thing was supposed to be good.

Only, I’d been in love with Rush and he was a man. It was something I’d come to accept—with Cam’s help. I’d been in love with my best friend who was a man, but we hadn’t belonged together. He belonged with Linc, and I knew that, accepted it, was mostly over it… Cam’s brown eyes caught mine, and he smiled, then winked, and yeah, I was staring.

Heat flooded my gut. Okay, so maybe I was attracted to Cam too…which meant Rush, Cam, and women? My head was a fucking confusing place to be. It had been for a long time.

Shoving Camden out of my thoughts, I buckled down and finished my shift. I wasn’t closing the bar tonight, so as soon as midnight came around, I was getting the hell out of there. Typically, I would have a drink with Cam, or we would have at least walked out together, but my skin was still too tight and my head was still this twisting hurricane of confusion.

I grabbed my shit and went straight for the door. The second I stepped outside, I sucked in a lungful of fall air.

There, that was better. That helped. Since moving to Fever Falls, I’d learned little ways to deal with the stress in my life, stress I’d been feeling before my move, and it was amazing what a deep lungful of air could do sometimes.

It was only two steps later when I saw him…Cam and the sexy fucking blonde. He had his back against Fever and his hands on her waist. I saw his finger brushing back and forth between her skirt and her shirt, against her bare skin, and fuck if I didn’t tremble.

She kissed his neck, he smiled, and then his eyes immediately snapped up, like somehow he’d known I was there. Our gazes held, and I couldn’t move. Why the fuck couldn’t I move? I had no business giving a shit who Camden was with. It wasn’t something I had seen often, but I knew he hadn’t been celibate since I moved there, and really, why the fuck should he be? We were friends. I’d told him I was straight except Rush. The end.
CARTER
Relationships--who needs 'em? As a personal-assistant-extraordinaire to one of the top PR firms in Los Angeles, I've dedicated most of my life to errand-running and people-pleasing. But when it comes to men, as much as I love to please them in the bedroom, I'm way too busy to give more than that. Fortunately, as far as my options go...well, let's just say I'm used to getting what I want, whenever I want it.
Unless your name happens to be Sawyer Burke. I haven't been in Fever Falls long, but the more time I spend here, the more intrigued I've become by the guy with the sexy auburn locks and the no-nonsense attitude. He plays the quiet, bookish part well, but he's got a problem--I have a talent for reading people, and if there's one thing I'm certain about, it's that there's a wild sex-beast hiding under his clever facade. He thinks screwing around is all a big game to me, but games can be fun, right?

SAWYER
I've always been a relationship guy. I never understood the urge to bed a different guy every night. But it hasn't worked out well for me. The one time I let my guard down with a guy, he crushed me. Broke me. That's not something I'm eager to risk again, so I focus on my friends, my brother, and my bookstore. Really, it's better for me. I'm not the kind of guy most men want anyway.
Unfortunately, I can't get Carter James out of my head. I told myself I hate him--and I should. He's everything I'm not--loud, sassy...and more than a little annoying. But I want him too, and he's made no secret of wanting me. I refuse to get caught up in one of his games, but I'm also learning there's more to Carter than meets the eye. He unleashes something inside me I never knew was there--this dominant sex-god that somehow makes me feel more like me than I ever have.
I can't let myself fall in love with him. Easier said than done. Carter challenges me in ways I didn't know I needed. What we share becomes a game of sorts, but not the kind I first thought, and the longer we play, the more likely it is that the losers will be our hearts. We should stop. We should know better. But even if there's the unlikeliest chance that we might win--well, then--GAME ON.
Game On is part of the Fever Falls series but can be read and enjoyed on its own.

Books in Series:

Fever Falls Series by Riley Hart

Fever Falls Series by Devon McCormack

Books by Author:

Riley Hart Books

Devon McCormack Books

PROLOGUE

Sawyer

I hated the fact that I got flustered every time I knew I was going to see Carter. I mean, what the fuck was that?

He made me nuts.

He got under my skin.

But I was also attracted to him…had been from the start.

And I didn’t like it. I didn’t like it one bit.

The last time someone had gotten to me that way… Nope. I wasn’t going there. Not tonight. Not ever again.

“Hey, bro. What’s up?” Cam put an arm around me as I stood at the counter in Fever—our favorite gay bar on Fever Street. It annoyed me that Camden could always tell when something was bothering me. Okay, maybe not always, but more so than anyone else. He was a year older than me and more than just my brother. Cam was my best friend, even if we were incredibly different in a lot of ways. For one, he had always been more outgoing than me.

There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t do for him, and there sure as shit wasn’t anything Cam wouldn’t do for me. He took it upon himself to be my protector. When I was a kid, he fought all my battles for me, and though that wasn’t something I’d allow anymore, Cam always tried.

“Hello? Earth to Baby Burke.” Cam waved his hand in front of my face.

“I hate it when you call me that.”

“Sorry, BB.”

“Um…because that’s not the same thing? We both know what BB stands for.”

Cam laughed, and I couldn’t help but smile. He made me crazy sometimes.

Speaking of crazy… My eyes scanned the room.

“Looking for Carter?” Cam asked, and my jaw immediately tightened. Cam never said shit like that in front of anyone else, but he said it enough to me, and…let’s just say we’d add that to the ever-growing list of things I didn’t like. The last thing I wanted was my stupid, annoying attraction to be obvious to my brother.

“No. Why would I be looking for him? I don’t even like him.” Carter was…too much of everything for me. Too loud, too opinionated, too flirty and sexual and…fuck, why did he have to be too sexy as well? He wasn’t even my type, but that didn’t seem to change how he affected me.

Typically, I liked guys who, like me, didn’t try and draw attention to themselves. Guys who weren’t looking to fuck someone different every weekend, because I sure as shit wasn’t good at the casual-hookup thing. I mean, it wasn’t that I never did it—after all, I hadn’t been in a relationship in what felt like forever—but I just…didn’t fit in. Not really. I guess I never really had. Maybe because I kept myself locked down too tight. If I didn’t take risks, I couldn’t get hurt.

“Okay,” Cam replied to my statement about not liking Carter, but I could tell he wasn’t convinced.

“I don’t understand why you find it so hard to believe I don’t like Carter.”

“Yeah…I’m trying to figure that out too. Call it brother intuition. That twin thing we have without being twins. And honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about the whole thing either. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

That made me roll my eyes because I sure as shit didn’t plan to let Carter James hurt me. I wouldn’t let any guy hurt me again. “Can we talk instead about how you have a crush on a straight guy?” I asked.

Camden dropped his head back and laughed loudly, like it was the most ridiculous thought in the world. And yeah, maybe it was, because Cam didn’t really do crushes, but ever since Jude, Rush’s best friend, moved to Fever Falls, my brother had become a little obsessed.

“It’s all just good fun.”

“You mean you wouldn’t have sex with him?” I asked.

“Oh no. I would definitely fuck him. He’s beautiful. You’ve seen him. But we’re not twelve, and it’s not a crush.”

So basically my brother was Carter…which was a weird thought and one I scratched out of my mind immediately.

It was two days before New Year’s Eve, and we’d all gathered at Fever because…well, because that’s what we did. The Saturgay crew had grown from what it used to be. It had been me, Cam, Beau, Linc, and Rush. Then Ashton Carmichael moved back to Fever Falls, fell in love with Beau, and became part of the group. From there Jace and Dax became part of us too. Jace worked with Beau at the fire station. Dax moved here to be with Jace, and Carter was Dax’s assistant, which practically meant Dax was responsible for the thorn in my side that was Carter James.

Jude was our resident straight, who now tended bar at Fever and hung out with us when we all got together.

Keegan—Jace’s brother—with his boyfriend, Owen, the Prince of Parlaisa, along with their buddies Frederick, Casey, and Steve, were honorary members—the Baby Saturgays, if you wanted to put it that way.
KEEGAN:
Sightseeing, gay bars...and if I'm lucky, maybe a couple of random hookups. That's the extent of my plans when I sign up for a European vacay with my buddies. I've never heard of this Parlaisa country--but hey--a cheap flight and two-star hotel are perfect for a poor college kid, right? And the trip turns out to be even better than I could have possibly imagined when I end up in a bar with some sexy masked guy's tongue down my throat.
And damn...what a tongue. Even with his face partially obscured, Sexy Masked Guy can't hide those hypnotic steel blue eyes, his chiseled jawline, or the gun show he's working with under that tight T-shirt. But after our kiss, he proves to be nothing more than a cocky, dismissive a-hole. As if that isn't bad enough, flash forward--after one hell of a misunderstanding, I'm arrested by the Parlaisan royal guard and taken to a dungeon, where I learn that Sexy Masked Guy is actually Sexy Prince.
Prince Owen Hawthorne III.
Yes, I was kissing the Prince of Parlaisa! Even worse, pics of us kissing are posted on the notorious Prince Watch blog. Prince Owen III has been unmasked by the paps, and we've both been outed. And here I had been planning to finally tell my family about my inclinations towards rainbows, glitter, and c*ck as soon as I got back home to Fever Falls.
Seems like my vacation can't get any wackier, but now Prince Owen needs a favor--a fake relationship favor. All I have to do is pretend to be his boyfriend for a good cause and some cash that I could really use right about now. But do I really want to team up with a guy who's been nothing but a prick to me in the short time that I've known him?
Of course, before I know it, I'm in too deep. Fortunately, Owen's strict 'no messing around' rule will keep this from getting out of control. Even though I can't stop thinking about how he knew exactly what he was doing with his tongue. Even though he loves watching me prance around in my underwear.
Even though he can't get enough of me on my knees, doing what I do best. Dammit--did we already screw this up?
Talk about a #RoyalProblem. #ROYAL is part of the Fever Falls series but can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.
With her legs spread out, she lay before me, and as Frederick fed her his dick, I leaned down and offered a kiss between her breasts before kissing down her belly, to her pussy, running my tongue around and stimulating her clit with my thumb.

The way she moaned and arched her back gave me all the assurance I needed as I continued my work, my cock getting painfully hard.

“God, you taste good,” I muttered against her flesh.

Maggie—or was it Carol—or Angela?

I was usually better at names, but we’d barely chatted on the dance floor before she’d grabbed Frederick and started making out with him. I was suspecting she might have just gone for him, but then she turned and started kissing me too, which told me everything I needed to know.

After I spent some time going down on her, Frederick and I rolled on condoms, trying out various activities with her before giving her what she had already requested, practically demanded, before agreeing to come back with us.

Frederick lay across the mattress, our beautiful guest straddling his waist as he pushed into her pussy while I took the back.

I slid my hand down her side. “That feel okay?” I asked, taking my time, giving her a chance to adjust to me.

We’d both been inside her already, but this was the first time either of us had been in her ass.

“That’s nice. You’re very hard,” she noted, chuckling. “Both of you are. Lucky me.”

She kissed Frederick before turning back and offering me a kiss.

I steadily navigated my cock inside her, and once we’d managed to work into our stride, she reached behind her, grabbing the back of my head. She drew me down, encouraging my face toward Frederick’s, which made me pull away quickly.

“Oh, did I misread this?” She glanced back to me and then to Frederick. “You guys don’t kiss?”

“Not each other,” Frederick said.

“Yes, I’m actually working really hard to not even hit his legs too much,” I added.

“But I certainly feel those balls on mine,” Frederick teased.

“Shut your dirty mouth.”

She laughed. “Okay, boys. No need for a no-homo moment. That’s fine. I should have asked first. I guess I just assumed.”

“It’s fine,” I said. “Certainly wouldn’t be the first time we’ve been asked.”

“I imagine not,” she said before turning to kiss me again.

As we relaxed, I pushed in, my hand sliding around her side, to her taut belly.

She relaxed right onto us as we eased into her, aiming to satisfy her desire. She was the reason we were all shacking up in this hotel room, enjoying the experience with Shelly…right? Jenny? Hell, those didn’t even start with the same letter. But I’d narrowed it down to a -lly or -nny, so that was something.

Lengthy strands of dark, nearly black hair fell down her back, shaking with her movements as we all worked in unison, each of us toward our own finale.

I fondled her right breast while Frederick kissed up and down her neck as we fucked.

Her ass was so tight, and judging by the way Frederick was moaning, it was evident he was enjoying that pussy as much as we both had a few times already.

As our moans grew together, she called out, “Yes, right there, Frederick. Breed me!”

“Wait, what?” Frederick asked, pulling away and looking down at his crotch. “Did the condom break?”

“No. It’s just role-play. I like the idea of being filled with cum. Just go with it.”

I stifled my laugh. Not at all toward her erotic fantasy, but more for the concerned expression Frederick had on his face as he’d clearly considered the possibility of having been unprotected inside her. Despite the distraction, he was able to get back into the moment just fine, even as she continued: “I want you to fill me up. I want it deep in me.”

Why was that turning me on so much?

The idea of being inside her, bare, filling her up, was so fucking hot.

Our movements picked up together, and her body became a fit of spasms. “I’m coming. I— I—!”

Her movements and shifts were intense before she leaned down and kissed Frederick, calling out. She was hot already, but when she came, she sounded like some sort of mythical goddess.

“I think I’m gonna shoot,” I warned.

“Do it just like this,” she insisted, practically demanded as she leaned back farther, resting her hand on the back of my head as she offered a firm kiss.

And it was too much for me.

I shot up inside the condom.

“Oh yeah, give me that load,” she begged.

“Fuck, I’m about to,” Frederick called out, and she turned back to him and granted him his own kiss. He nibbled on her bottom lip as his own roar escaped, his body going through the familiar motions it had when we’d done something like this before.
Lincoln
I’ve done a good job getting over my past. I’m not only proud of who I am, but revel in it. Still, I don’t let myself get too close to people. With closeness comes questions and those pesky feelings, and I’m having none of that. I’ve got a great job, friends, I’m cute and twinky, and my bed’s never empty. What more do I need? Except I can’t stop sleeping with Rush Alexander. I try, I really do, but I just can’t stay away, and that, ladies and gentlemen, is stressing me out. Rush has the power to hurt me—something I swore I’d never let happen again. Unfortunately, things become a little more complicated when I tell a white lie that lands me in a fake relationship with him. Yeah, not my best moment.

Rush
I’ve always been an easygoing guy and don’t let many things get to me. I’ve worked hard to make my dream of becoming a professional motocross racer come true, and everything else is icing on the cake. Like Lincoln Gray, for example. I need to tread carefully, even though I want more from him than our occasional hookups. If I give what we have too much throttle, we’ll crash and burn. But when Linc accidentally announces we’re boyfriends in front of my mom, the race is on. First, I have to show him there’s more between us than the way we burn up the sheets together. When Linc finally trusts me in ways he doesn’t anyone else, there’s no turning back. I’m a firm believer that nothing worth having comes easily, and Lincoln Gray is worth it all.

Two guys surrounded me, one grinding against my front, the other against my ass. The guy behind me was hard, his dick rubbing against me as we moved. His hands were on my hips. His boyfriend wrapped his arms around us both, then leaned in so they could kiss over my shoulder.

Not gonna lie, it was hot as fuck.

I was really playing with the idea of being between the two of them all night long. Why the fuck shouldn’t I? I was single, sexy, and safe, so I didn’t see the problem with playing when I wanted to.

And I liked playing…a lot.

I’d worked hard to change who I was, from that lonely, quiet boy who was teased, ridiculed—oh, and who everyone thought would be so easy to destroy. Fuck that. I came back better, twinkier, more flexible, and more wanted than any of them, thank you very much!

Right? It was real, wasn’t it? How I felt now?

Danger! Danger! I nipped those thoughts in the bud before they had the chance to spread like the weeds used to in my aunt’s flower garden. I should know. She made me pick the damn things. It was one of the few things I had been good for.

I wasn’t going to let that negative shit bring me down, so I lifted one arm and wrapped it around Front’s shoulders, my other arm going behind me so I could touch Back too.

Obviously, I didn’t know their names. We hadn’t had time to get that far yet. We might not exchange names at all.

The music was blasting from the speakers. It was Saturgay, the one night a month I always hung out with my friends at Fever, our favorite bar. Well…except Rush was only there September through the end of December, when he wasn’t racing dirt bikes. Depending on whether he was riding motocross that year or not, he could have summers off, but racing was Rush’s life since the moment he was born. His name was fucking Rush, for God’s sake. He’d only taken one summer off since I’d known him.

And Beau…he missed every once in a while now because he and Ash were in love, and apparently that meant you had to miss Saturgays with your friends sometimes and didn’t hang out with your bestie as much either.

Not that I was bitter or anything.

As soon as the thought hit me, the guilt rolled in, and I silently berated myself for being so needy where Beau was concerned, but I couldn’t help it. There was no one in the world I trusted more than him. The only one who had always been there, who I knew was in my life because he wanted to be and not just because I was forced on him or we had mutual friends.

I glanced over and saw him dancing with Ash. They were fucking slow dancing to a fast song, little hearts racing and shit over their heads, and I squashed my bitterness because Beau was happy, and no one deserved happiness more than him.

The rest of our Saturgay crew consisted of Camden and Sawyer, who were brothers, and who at the moment had their backs to me. Sawyer was gay, Cam was bi, but he leaned heavily toward men. He was currently chatting with the bartender, a cute little twink I might have been jealous of if I didn’t have two men attached to me.

“Mmm. You feel good,” Back said as his hands roamed up and down my chest.

“You do too, sugar,” I replied. He really did. They both did. I was definitely feeling them, which was a bit of a relief because it had been a while since I’d hooked up with anyone other than Rush. Speaking of Rush, where was he?

My eyes darted to our friends. Nope, Rush wasn’t there. Lights flashed in my eyes as I looked across the sea of people in the packed bar, trying not to be too obvious about it.

Finally, I saw Rush leaning in and talking to a blond twink standing against a wall. My pulse lurched strangely as I recognized the way Rush looked at the guy. I’d been on the receiving end of that look too many times. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I’d been stupidly enamored just like the twink was. I mean, how could I not? Rush was fucking gorgeous—tall, with chocolate-brown hair, long, lean muscles, scruff dusting a perfectly square jawbone, and cheekbones for days.

Nope!

I wasn’t going there. I wasn’t hooking up with Rush again, damn it!

But then Rush looked my way, his gray eyes snagging on me. He kicked up the right side of his mouth in a half grin that made my dick twitch and my hole tighten. Ugh! Stupid Rush Alexander. Why in the fuck did I like sleeping with him so much? I rarely did repeat performances…except with him.
DAX:My job is putting out fires--PR fires, that is. Partner in one of the most prestigious PR firms in Hollywood, I've lived most of my life helping others stay in the spotlight but keeping as far away from it myself as humanly possible. Enter Jace Kruse.
#HottieFirefighter is the hashtag everyone is using for the overnight Insta-star who made headlines when a pic of him with a pooch he saved from a runaway vehicle went viral. Doesn't have anything to do with my life until a major potential client shows interest in an endorsement deal with the internet sensation, and Jace becomes my ticket to stomping the ass of one of my company's fiercest competitors.
Problem is: Jace isn't swayed by dreams of fame and fortune. He prefers his down-to-earth life in Fever Falls and has turned down every company who's approached him to leech off his recently acquired celebrity status.
But where others have failed, I'm confident I can succeed. If there's one thing I'm good at, it's persuading. And after a few encounters with Jace, the easy-go-lucky, ever-charming, sexy-as-hell, and surprisingly #topcurious firefighter has me persuading him about more than signing on for an endorsement deal.
He may be good at putting out fires, but Jace sure knows how to start them in the bedroom...and then in my heart. However, between his rising star power and the intensity of my feelings, I know where this inferno is leading, and if we don't put it out soon, someone's gonna get burned.
#BURN is part of the Fever Falls series but can be read and enjoyed as a standalone.

I was midway through my presentation, pitching my company’s history, credentials, and stats. We’d rented this hotel suite in Thailand—where Hacksmore had been staying for two weeks—as the venue to try and win him over. To his left, his assistant sat in another leather chair, appearing totally uninterested in my pitch as she scrolled through her iPad.

I’d dropped everything in Hollywood the moment my business partner and I discovered Jerrick Hacksmore was in the market for a PR firm to handle his new commercial line of apparel.

We weren’t about to lose this opportunity to any of our competitors. Hacksmore Designs received some fabulous publicity over the past year, including exposure in a recent reality series with Anna Wintour, and Hacksmore’s latest plan to transition into commercial fashion with a line for several department stores was the talk of the town. It was an account every PR firm was eager to manage, and with Hacksmore in the market for the best, I was ready to fight for our shot.

“This is fashion,” I pressed on. “We understand aesthetic, image, and brand. Your consumers want it to be big and hot…a campaign that sizzles. They want to know why they need this, and we at KlineSmart Global can give you that.”

I pressed a button on the remote in my hand, changing the projector slide, then indicating the screen to my right.

Hacksmore sighed as though he was already exhausted, and I hadn’t even made it to the pitch yet.

“Okay, okay, I’ve had enough of this. I’m going to level with you, Dax, because I’m not interested in wasting your time. As you know, it’s only because of your partner that I was even willing to take this meeting.”

If Elliott hadn’t been climbing to base camp on Mt. Everest, he would have been here. But since he was unavailable and I had no doubt in my ability to reel Hacksmore in, we’d made do.

“Freyda Inc. has expressed serious interest in our account,” Hacksmore added, “and on the heels of their success with Vinny Creed’s H&M line…”

I struggled to keep from growling at the mention of Freyda Inc., a rival PR firm that had seized an opportunity I’d been working up for months with Vinny Creed. Their company had hit a grand slam with their successful campaign, making them the current envy of the PR world.

We were number two, and I didn’t live my life by being a number two.

“I’m certain I can persuade you guys to work with our firm on this campaign,” I assured him, more determined than ever. “Freyda Inc. had a good year, yes. They’re the trendy firm, but our firm has had far more success, particularly with brands that aren’t already established, finding a way to bring them into the market. We can give you the best launch in the goddamn world.”

“The reputation of your confidence precedes you, Dax Munro. However, confidence isn’t what we’re interested in. We want results.”

“We have the numbers and the history, same as Freyda Inc. We are pioneers on the social-media front. Not only are we innovative and one of a kind, but we promise to make your account our number-one priority.”

I shared a look with my assistant, Carter, seated in another leather chair on the opposite side of the boardroom table from Hacksmore and his assistant. I could tell by the way Carter frowned that he knew this wasn’t going well for us.

Hacksmore turned back to his assistant. “Could you pull up the image, Ferah?”

Ferah rose from her seat and walked to the front of the boardroom, where she unplugged my laptop from the projector and swapped the cable with one of her own to connect her iPad. She moved around the screen on her tablet, then clicked on an icon.

The image of a firefighter popped up—hot as sin, with six-pack abs framed perfectly by walls of muscle and a bulging chest and biceps, he held a Shar-Pei, both of them soaked. The firefighter had short dirty-blond hair, a damp lock of his bangs curling over his forehead. He looked at the camera with these big, deep blue eyes that appeared to be able to see right through me, smirking as though he owned the goddamn world with that beautiful face of his.

“Do you know who this is?”

“Everyone knows Hottie Firefighter,” I said. “He saved the Shar-Pei from the car in the river. Kid caught this picture when he came out of the water, hashtagged the hell out of it for Instagram, and it went viral.”

It was my job to be on top of what was vogue, and Hottie Firefighter was one of the top trending images of the past few weeks.
ASHTON
If there’s one thing I know, it’s how to play the game…both on and off the field. If it hadn’t been for that one teenage slipup where I kissed Beau Campbell, I’d be able to keep fooling myself. Football is the one thing I use to distract myself from the truth, and when I screw-up and lose the game I love, I find myself right back in Fever Falls. And right back face-to-face with Cranky Campbell, who hates me even more than he did when we were kids. Whatever magic he held over me then is still there. As much as I fight it, I still want him. And I always get what I want…well, except with Beau, who constantly calls me on my crap. Why do I like that so much?

BEAU
I might’ve spent years watching Ash live out my dream—without the off-field antics and orgies with women, at least—but I’ve made a good life for myself. I’m a firefighter, and I coach my brother’s football team for those with developmental disabilities. But when Ash swings back into town armed with his monster ego and an arsenal of stupid nicknames, everyone is in awe of him. Nope, not me. I don’t care if our kiss years ago was responsible for my sexual awakening. I won’t fall for Ashton Carmichael. Though that resolution would be a whole lot easier if he wasn’t so tempting. Once he finds his way into my bed, I’m screwed—in more ways than one. But there’s more to Ash than meets the eye, buried beneath his ego, sarcasm and how we burn up the sheets together. Soon, it’s more than a game. We don’t just get each other fired up, we just might win each other’s hearts.
Too bad things are never that simple…

Books in Series:

Fever Falls Series by Riley Hart

Fever Falls Series by Devon McCormack

Books by Author:

Riley Hart Books

PROLOGUE

Beau

My gut tightened as I watched Ashton Carmichael dance on the coffee table with Sarah Pinkton. He grabbed her ass, and she giggled. Everyone cheered and laughed as they grinded against each other. He took a long swallow of beer from his red plastic party cup and then let it slosh over the sides. I didn’t get it, the whole red-plastic-cup thing, but if there was beer and a keg, red cups always went right along with it.

And Ashton Carmichael, of course. I was pretty sure that in our four years of high school there hadn’t been a party he hadn’t attended…and acted like he was doing now…which people ate up like it was an ice-cream sundae on a hot day.

I couldn’t stand him. I really couldn’t stand Ash.

But he was also my friend…and obviously that made things difficult.

Strange how someone could grate on your every nerve but you also considered them a friend…kind of…sometimes…okay, fine, he was a friend, but he was also annoying as shit.

Still, my eyes stayed firmly entranced by him even while I berated myself for it the whole time. Even while I told myself to ignore him. Like everyone else, I couldn’t look away from Ash, and that truth made me even more frustrated with myself than I was with him.

The beer sloshed over the cup again. He laughed, dropping his head back with a rich, throaty sound. When he looked up, his gaze focused right on me. When I rolled my eyes, the right side of his mouth kicked up in a half grin. He winked at me while he danced with Sarah, and that was my wake-up call to turn away…which I did…only to look back at him a moment later and see Ash still watching me. There was a wrinkle on his forehead, a crease between his eyes as if he was thinking about something.

But then his eyes snapped away, and he jumped down off the table like he was trying to be Patrick Swayze in that movie my mom always went crazy about. He switched from Sarah to Crystal, and no one cared because he wasn’t dating either of them. He just liked attention, to make a big fucking show of everything, and everyone around him got their jollies watching.

Did I mention Ashton Carmichael annoyed the shit out of me? It bore repeating.

And it was time to walk away.

As I headed toward the kitchen, weaving my way through the crowd, a body slammed into me. Shannon, my ex-girlfriend, looked up at me, her eyes sparkling and sort of dopey-looking. Not that Shannon wasn’t smart, because she was. She came in third in our class with me in second and Ash fucking Carmichael in first, but alcohol always made her silly. “I miss you, Beau. Did I tell you how hot you look today?” She reached up and fingered my hair. “Your hair’s soft. It’s the color of chocolate. I really like chocolate.”

Actually, my hair was black, not brown, and I hoped she wasn’t planning on eating it. Regardless, this wasn’t good. She was great, one of my close friends, but I just didn’t feel that way about her. I kind of hated that I didn’t. Shannon was perfect, perfect for me—only I couldn’t make myself see her as more than a friend, and I couldn’t figure out why that was. “Thanks, Shan. You look good too. How much have you had to drink?”

She held up her thumb and forefinger, making an inch. “Just a little bit, Dad.”

I rolled my eyes. Was it such a bad thing to be responsible? Or as other people sometimes called it, boring, but whatever. I didn’t think boring was such a bad thing.

Shannon stumbled into me, then frowned. “I don’t feel so well, Beau.”

“Shit,” I groaned. “Come on. Let’s get you outside.”

I got her to the door just as Holly and Paulina, Shannon’s closest friends, approached. “Thank God you found her, Beau. She slipped away,” Holly said.

“We’re gonna take her home,” Paulina added. She was the designated driver. Anytime anyone partied, Paulina offered to drive people home because she didn’t drink, which was a lifesaver more times than I could count. I wasn’t out there drinking as often as most people I knew, but I did indulge sometimes.

“I’ll walk you guys to the car.”

“Thanks, Beau. You’re the best.” Holly squeezed my shoulder.

We made our way out of Wyatt’s parents’ lake house. They were the wealthiest family in Fever Falls, and Wyatt was Ash’s best friend…not that I wasn’t friends with Wyatt, because I was.

Ash and I hung out in the same social circles—being captain and co-captain of the football team—Ash was captain, of course. Hell, we were even in prom nominations together, which Ash won, not that I’d wanted to. He’d been to my house, and I’d been to his.
