Time for the younger generation to make its mark!

Alexei is determined to prove to his beloved uncles, Justin and Gabriel, that he’s got what it takes to follow in their accomplished footsteps.

It’s just that this new target is a little more than he bargained for.

No worries. Maybe he’d just show this old dog that he knows plenty of fun tricks.

And Alexei loved a good party.

People were scantily dressed, well lubricated—usually with alcohol, but sometimes other things—and always so happy to welcome an unfamiliar face. The bigger the party, the more opportunities to get lost in the crowd and snuggle close to a target.

His uncle Gabriel hated the party scene. He liked the one-on-one hit, the quick in and out. His uncle didn’t mind getting his hands dirty, but he hated mingling with strangers and putting a fake smile on his face. That was Gabriel’s idea of a nightmare.

But for Alexei the smile usually wasn’t fake. He was a social butterfly like his other uncle, Justin. Or rather, uncle-in-law, but really, both men had raised him for more than half his life. He adored them, and they’d taught him everything they knew.

And that included how to efficiently hunt and kill a mark.

Tonight’s objective was an arms dealer who operated in Kiev and Budapest, but he was apparently spending the summer months in London. That was perfect since Alexei had decided to spend the summer months hiding—er, rather, hanging out in Europe.

The posh London town house was loaded with people in sparkling outfits. Everyone had a drink or even two in their hands. Everyone was laughing or dancing. And with the sheer volume of alcohol—and possibly drugs—being consumed, Alexei was sure no one was going to notice that he wasn’t technically on the guest list and didn’t actually know anyone there.

He’d been at the party for only twenty minutes, flirted with a few men and women, and sipped a drink. His target was constantly on the move among the guests, shaking hands, kissing cheeks, and generally acting like a magnanimous king. Alexei was careful to remain out of his line of sight. He wasn’t worried Gabor Kalman would realize he wasn’t a party guest—the man had far more money than brains in his head when it came to social situations.

Sure, he had two bodyguards on hand, but the idiots were only watching the guests who came in through the front door. They didn’t notice Alexei coming over the back hedge, weaving through the catering staff, and instantly blending with the crowd gathered around the open bar.

With a drink in his hand and an open smile, Alexei had waltzed right past the two gun-toting behemoths and they hadn’t even blinked at him, an assassin in their midst.

One of Uncle Justin’s first lessons: Don’t be afraid to hide in plain sight.

And that was Alexei’s favorite way to make a move: To be right there where he could be seen but completely overlooked. It was as if he were mocking them, daring them to underestimate the cute twink with the glitter lipstick and to-die-for cheekbones.

Because, seriously, his cheekbones were a gift from God.

Everyone only saw harmless when they looked at him. He was a baby bunny. A lost lamb. A cinnamon roll. The twinkiest twink who ever twinked, and he needed to be protected.

Then he’d kill his mark in the blink of an eye, and their last expression would be one of absolute shock. Because yeah, they’d just gotten killed by a sparkly-eyed cinnamon roll.

Of course, he’d only been doing this gig for a couple of years. He was still trying to build up his reputation, and it meant taking some nasty jobs here and there, but he drew the same line his uncles always had: No innocent people for targets. Nothing that would hurt kids.

Gabor Kalman was no innocent man. He’d sold arms to lots of bad people, from drug manufacturers to terrorists to dealers of sex slaves. Someone had finally scratched the money together to take the asshole out. Of course, it was surprising that he didn’t have better security, considering he was in the arms market.

But then, the bastard also had a reputation. People might have stayed away from him rather than ruin their access to weapons.

The guy deserved to be put on his knees in the middle of this crowd and have two bullets shot into the back of his head, but it would make leaving the party quietly pretty much impossible. No, Alexei planned to do it the one way he was sure Gabor would never see it coming—with a handshake.

Standing out on the rear patio with his drink in hand, Alexei slowly pivoted on his heels, scanning the crowd. There were a few faces among the partygoers who looked familiar. Some musicians, a couple of actors, and possibly a politician or two. Interesting. How many of them knew Gabor’s line of work? How many of them would actually care?

Not just “social media” care, with a quick tweet or TikTok video condemning all that Gabor Kalman represented to save face or even gain credibility, but truly care down in their souls. Probably not many.

Devlin Relic’s first thought was that this had to be a sick joke.

His second one was something along the lines of Thank God I just dropped Jake off at summer camp. His eight-year-old son did not need to see this.

Standing in the middle of the master bath, Devlin stared at the body, the initial shock giving way to confusion and no small amount of fear.

There was a dead body in his bathtub. And it was just a body to him. He didn’t recognize the man with sandy blond hair and a ghastly pale face with an overall gray pallor. His eyebrows were bushy, like miniature haystacks above his closed eyes.

That wasn’t right.

A person’s eyes didn’t naturally close with death. Someone had to close them.

Of course, there had to be an additional someone in this equation. It wasn’t like this poor, confused fellow had broken into Devlin’s house, wandered upstairs, climbed into the bathtub, and expired all on his own.

The gunshot wound in the center of his chest was a clear sign he’d been killed. The corpse’s charcoal-gray shirt was deeply stained across the front, and a couple of black buttons were missing.

Devlin edged a little bit closer, one cautious step at a time. The cadaver’s chest didn’t rise and fall with a single breath, though Devlin was nearly panting with his rising panic. He looked as if he might be financially well-off. His clothes appeared to be of good quality, and the watch on his right wrist was extremely expensive. A businessman, then.

Dead.

In his bathroom.

At least Devlin was pretty sure he was dead. Fuck. He needed to be absolutely sure.

Edging closer again, Devlin extended three fingers and carefully pressed them to the man’s neck. He didn’t even need to press hard enough to locate where his pulse should have been. The abnormally cool temperature of his flesh and the overall stiffness of his body were obvious signs that the man was dead and had been for at least a while.

He jumped back and immediately rubbed his fingers on his jeans, needing to be rid of the feel of the dead man’s skin.

This was all wrong. Why in the world was a dead man in his bathtub?

It didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to stay there.

Pulling his cell phone from his pocket, Devlin retreated to the first floor and the living room to call the police. Someone had broken into his house and deposited the body for reasons he couldn’t begin to understand, but there was no question that this was a problem for the police.

Not that he had any desire to call them. After being framed for the death of his husband Adam and nearly killed by a former business associate, Devlin wanted nothing to do with the police, but it wasn’t like he had much choice in the matter. They would at least be able to take the body away, figure out who he was, and start investigating his untimely death.

Forcing himself to take a deep breath, Devlin focused on a plan. He would call the police. They would investigate and take the body away. From there, it would stop being his problem and it would become their problem. That was easy enough.

Except, none of it was turning out to be easy.

It took three tries just to explain to the 9-1-1 dispatcher that a dead body he didn’t recognize had been discovered in his house. When he was about to explain it for the fourth time, he settled on just telling the dispatcher that someone had broken in.

Fifteen minutes later, he was letting cops in and leading them upstairs to the master bathroom where…the bathtub was now empty.

No. No. No.

Nonononononono…this isn’t right.

“Mr. Relic—” the cop started in a weary, annoyed voice.

“Do not take that tone with me!” Devlin snapped. He spun around, stabbed a finger at the cop who had spoken, then directed it at the other one, who was making notes on a small notepad. “I am not crazy, and I’m not making this up. I returned home from dropping off my son and-and-and there was a body in my bathtub!”

“And the body wasn’t there when you left to drop your son off at…”

“Camp,” Devlin snarled between clenched teeth. “And no! Of course there wasn’t a body in my tub when I left. I’d never seen this man before in my life.” He launched into another lengthy description of the poor dead man, trying to pull more details from his frazzled brain, but it wasn’t easy when it was still screaming over the fact that the corpse was gone!

How had the dead body disappeared?

He had not hallucinated it. There was no way his mind would play tricks on him in this fashion. This was insane. For the body to disappear, the person who had left it there had to have still been in the house when he came home and simply waited for him to return downstairs prior to moving it.
New Expanded Content for Deadly Lover!
Justin Mallory is an assassin. But he’s really a good guy.
He has years of bad decisions to make up for, starting with agreeing to join the CIA after being recruited out of the Marines. No reason to add more black marks to his soul.
Now he chooses the jobs and he works always alone. It’s safer that way, and he can make sure the good guy always wins.
But this job…he can’t do alone.
Two scientists are dead and a dangerous drug is on the cusp of winning FDA approval if he doesn’t track down the culprit behind the lies and murders.
Gabriel Prescott is a well-trained, efficient, and cold-blooded killer. After a brutal betrayal left his lover dead, Gabriel is out only for himself.
But when this lucrative contract lands in his lap, he can’t pass it up. Even if it means working with the unpredictable and insane Justin Mallory.
Dodging bullets and secret meetings force them to depend on each other.
And one hot, frantic night together leads to a hidden sweetness and questions of whether they could possibly have something more.
****Author’s Note: As a gift to readers, I have expanded the original Deadly Lover by nearly 20,000 words, giving readers a deeper understanding of Justin and Gabriel. Furthermore, I have added the short story Lover Calling to the special edition so you can enjoy even more of these fun assassins.>

Heavy footsteps pounded across the hardwood floor, followed by the slam of the garage door as it shut behind Kevin. He raced across the kitchen, not bothering to flick on the lights as he maneuvered around the marble-topped island toward the narrow hall. He needed to get to his private office.

The dim work light over the stove created grim shadows, but he ignored them, focusing only on the task ahead. Sweat trickled down his brow and left his shirt sticking to his frame, seeming to grow more constricting with each movement.

Kristen’s wide, frantic eyes flashed through his mind. She’d grabbed him, warned him they were being watched. Her slender fingers had bitten into his arm like talons, and he’d only wanted to shrug her off, walk away, and claim that it was paranoia riding her overworked and exhausted mind.

She was dead now.

His own access to key data files had been cut off at work. The IT department claimed it was an unknown malfunction and they were working on it, promising to have it fully restored tomorrow. But Kristen’s desperate words didn’t sound so paranoid anymore.

Reaching his desk cluttered with dirty coffee mugs, notes scribbled on scraps of paper, and other flotsam, he jostled the mouse, waking the computer from its slumber. The dual monitors flicked on, revealing a login screen. Kevin didn’t bother to sit as he typed in the first password to decrypt the hard drive and then a second password to get into the actual operating system.

If he could just upload all his new data to the cloud, he’d be able to access it from anywhere. He could finish his report while on the run and present his data to the world. He’d be safe. There would be no reason to come after him then.

A soft creak echoed through the silent house, barely drifting above the clatter of keys and the frantic beating of his heart in his ear. Kevin stopped, trembling fingers hovering just above the keyboard. The house was new—barely five years old. There were no sounds of shifting and settling.

The creak had come from a particular floorboard near the fridge. He’d hit it a hundred times on the trek between his office and the kitchen to get a bottle of water or a mug of coffee as he worked late into the night on his research.

He wasn’t alone in the house.

A sob tried to break past his clenched teeth, coming out as more of a muffled moan. Blinking, he looked at the monitors to find them blurred and unreadable. Unshed tears burned his eyes.

He was out of time.

Chapter 1

The man’s face was swollen, covered with ugly purple and blue bruises, so that he was unrecognizable. Not that Justin would have recognized the corpse anyway. He’d never met Dr. Kevin Weiss. The biochemist had been badly beaten before he’d finally died of a vicious blow to the back of his head.

The next picture showed a living room that had been torn apart. Stuffing poured from shredded sofa cushions, broken bits of coffee table lay scattered around the room, and holes pockmarked pale-tan walls. And in the center, the doctor’s limp body was awkwardly sprawled in a large pool of blood.

The local news had claimed the scientist had the poor timing of coming home during a burglary attempt.

“So…I’m guessing the reporters got their story wrong,” Justin drawled, lifting his eyes to the woman sitting opposite him in the small booth of the crowded coffee shop.

Marilyn lifted one sleek eyebrow at him, her plump red lips twisting slightly as if she were trying to decide whether to deliver the first cutting barb that came to mind. Dressed in a lilac blouse and white capri pants, she portrayed the perfect image of a middle-class suburban mom. But a hardness in her dark-brown eyes whispered of a past that most knew nothing of. Not even Justin, and he definitely preferred it that way.

Justin hid his smirk behind his coffee mug as he took another sip. It was so fucking easy to irritate her. Marilyn would never have called him if the police were already on the right track with this one.

“Do you know anything about Iaso Health?” she asked, tapping her manicured nails on the table. Her firm voice was pitched just loud enough to reach him above the steady clatter of noise filling the busy coffee shop while not drawing anyone else’s attention.

“Big Pharma headquartered in New England with a research facility up in Blue Ash,” he quickly replied, referring to the quiet suburb located just to the north of Cincinnati, Ohio. “They have their fingers in drugs to treat a variety of diseases, but their big moneymakers over the years have been in psychopharmacological and diabetic drugs.”

Marilyn nodded. “Dr. Weiss was one of their lead developers. Rumor has it he was part of the Siltryptrose development that is expected to receive the FDA’s stamp of approval any day now.”
