I’m on a deadline, sweetie. I need you to push that calf on out.”

“Who are you talking to?”

I glanced over my shoulder as my smile grew bigger. “April.”

My brother, Mitchell, rolled his eyes. “The giraffe?”

With a chuckle, I replied, “The one and only. Come on, tell me you’re not the least bit curious about her.”

“I’m not the least bit curious about her.”

I huffed, turning back to my laptop. I was on a deadline with this book and the last thing I really needed to be doing was staring at the ass of a giraffe.

“Where is everyone?” Mitchell asked.

“Well, Steed and Paxton are on their honeymoon, in case your forgot, and Mom and Dad took Chloe out for a ride.”

My older brother sat down in the chair, sighing. “I knew about Steed and Paxton, smart ass. I meant Mom, Dad, and Chloe.”

“Are you off work today? What brings you by?”

“I’ve got the week off,” he said.

I raised my eyebrows. “And that’s why you’re here pouting?”

He frowned. “I’m not pouting.”

“You’re pouting.”

“I’m bored. I thought taking spring break off was a good idea, but I’m too used to working.”

“Want to come to New York with me? I leave tomorrow morning to hang out with Waylynn. Sister bonding trip and all.”

His eyes lit up. “New York, huh?”

With an evil grin, I added, “We can get drunk and have fun. By fun, I mean have meaningless sex with good-looking, rich people.”

Mitchell laughed. “Damn, I don’t think I like the sound of my baby sister talking about fucking people.”

“I said meaningless sex. I didn’t say fucking.”

His head pulled back in surprise. “Meli, isn’t that the same thing?”

“No. When you say fucking it sounds vulgar. When I say have meaningless sex, it doesn’t sound so bad.”

“It’s fucking, no matter how you spin it.”

I let out a long groan. “Fine. You could go to New York and fuck a bunch of new women whom you haven’t already fucked in the back of your truck before breaking their hearts when they quickly realized the only thing they’re getting from you is your dick, and only long enough for them to call out your name a few times.”

His brows rose. “Holy shit, do you always talk so filthy?”

My jaw fell while I stared at him, dumbfounded. “Are you serious right now?”

He shook his head. “Dad would wash your mouth out with soap if he heard his little angel talking that way.”

With a chuckle, I shook my head. “Well, Dad would want to do a lot more to me if he knew all the things I’ve done. How do you think I write such hot sex? It’s called on-the-job training.” Flashing him another evil smile, I winked. “Matter of fact, your friend Rodney might have taught me a new position or two.”

Mitchell’s face turned red. He stood, nearly knocking over the barstool he was sitting on. “I’ll fucking rip his dick off if he touched you.”

I grinned. “He did a lot more than touch, big brother.” Leaning back, I grabbed the table and started a pretend orgasm.

Balling his fists, Mitchell’s eyes nearly popped out of his head while he paced. “I’ll kill him. No. I’ll lose my job if I kill him. I need to find someone who will kill him. But make him hurt first…for a long time.”

With a roar of laughter, I got up and walked over to him. “Mitchell, do you honestly think one of your friends would ever touch me? Hell, half the guys in this town are afraid to even look at me, let alone sleep with me. Oh, wait, as you put it…fuck me.”

“Don’t say that.” He covered his ears.

I rolled my eyes. “Sit back down, and don’t put a hit out on Rodney. He’s a nice guy. I tried hitting on him once. I used my best moves and he turned me down flat. Said he valued his life over his dick.”

Mitchell’s body relaxed and he let out a chuckle. “You realize you almost had me wanting to kill one of my closest friends, Amelia?”

I shrugged. “You do know I have had sex before and with some people you know.”

He shuddered. “Why are we having this conversation?”

“You brought it up!”

“No, I didn’t. I simply said I was on vacation. You brought up having sex!”

My father, mother, and Chloe walked into the kitchen and stopped. Mom looked at me and asked, “Who is having S-E-X?”

“That spells sex!” Chloe called out as she ran by all of us and headed into the game room.

“Lord Almighty, that child is a good speller,” Mom said.

“Back to my original question, who is having S-E…oh, hell, sex?”

“Mitchell…” I said a little too quickly. He turned and glared at me.

With a serious look, my mother said, “I hope you’re wearing a C-O-N—”

I gazed past my best friend, James Larson, to Scarlett Littlefield.

“Scarlett?” Jim Montigo asked. “I didn’t know she was back from Boston. Wasn’t she quite the prankster in middle school? Set a garbage can on fire outside the courthouse or something?”

My eyes roamed over Scarlett’s body and I smiled. She’d always been beautiful, but now she was all grown up with a body to die for. Even under the dim lights of the backyard party we were all attending, my breath paused at the sight of her.

“She was known to pull a prank or two.” Turning to James, I added with a smirk, “I don’t think she’s your type though, dude.”

He huffed as I glanced back her way and tried to pull my eyes off of her.

Jim chuckled. “Because she’s your type, Parker?”

With a shrug, I replied, “She doesn’t seem the like the type of girl who would be any of our types.”

Jim nodded.

“She’s going to school in Boston you said?” James asked.

She turned, and my eyes met Scarlett’s. What in the fuck was that feeling in my chest?

We locked gazes and when she smiled, my damn knees wobbled, and warmth filled my entire body. I returned the smile, and I swore she swayed.

“What the fuck, Parker? All you have to do is smile at a bitch and she melts on the spot?” James joked.

“Don’t call her that,” I said, not pulling my eyes off of her.

A hand waved in front of me, “Jesus, dude, are you drooling?” Jim asked.

I slapped his hand away. “Knock it off, asshole.”

Time moved slowly as I watched Scarlett make her way around to her friends, hugging them and saying goodbye. She was leaving, but not before I got the chance to talk to her. I remembered her from elementary school and middle school. She’d been the first girl I ever danced with at a school dance, and definitely the last. Not that anyone else knew that.

Following her out of Mitch O’Conner’s backyard and onto the street, I called out her name before she got into her little sporty BMW. She was an only child and spoiled rotten, or that was the rumor.

“Scarlett!” I called out. “Hold up!”

She paused, then turned to face me. A smile lit up her entire face.

Stopping in front of her, I pushed my hand through my hair and said, “Hey, I’m Trevor Parker.”

Her cheeks turned a slight pink, and my cock jumped in my pants.

“Our mothers are best friends. I know who you are, Trevor.”

My brow lifted. “Is that a good thing or a bad thing?”

Leaning against her car, she folded her arms over her chest, lifting her already perky tits. My damn pants grew a little bit tighter. My mother would kill me if she knew the thoughts that were running through my mind right now.

“I’m not sure I know you enough to answer that. If rumors are true, I’d say it was a bad thing.”

With a hurt expression, I slammed my hand over my heart. “Ouch. You wound me so, Ms. Littlefield.”

She chuckled and rolled her eyes. “You probably don't remember this, but you were the first boy to ever ask me to dance. At our sixth-grade winter formal in middle school.”

With a crooked smile, I placed my hand on her car, bringing our bodies closer. It wasn’t lost on me how she shook a little and sucked in a breath as I drew closer to her.

“I remember. You were the first girl I ever asked to dance with me.”

And the last.

Glancing to the ground, she dropped her arms to her sides nervously before looking back up at me.

“So, how have you been?” she asked. Her voice was so fucking sexy. “My momma said you’re going to be taking over your family ranch after college.”

“That’s the plan. Ranching is in my blood and it’s something I love. Can’t really see myself doing anything else.”

“You look good in Wranglers, so that’s a plus.” Her cheeks turned a soft pink at the innocent flirting.

“That is a plus,” I replied with a wink. “How do you like going to school in Boston?”

Scarlett exhaled loudly. “It’s cold. We had a mid-term break so that’s why I’m home for a visit.”

“You going to college up there also?”

Her eyes looked so sad. “Yeah. Probably.”

“How long are you in town for?”

Her teeth dug into her lower lip, and I was pretty sure I let out a groan as her pink lip turned white.

“I leave tomorrow.”

My heart dropped. “Tomorrow?”

She nodded. “Yep.”

It was out of my mouth before I could stop myself. “You want to go grab a cup of coffee at Lilly’s?”

Her face lit up again, and I decided right then and there I loved making her smile.

“I’d love to,” she replied.

“I’ll meet you there.”

Scarlett flashed me another breathtaking smile and slipped into her car while I jogged over to my truck. I hadn’t told James and Jim that I was leaving. The last thing I wanted was to catch hell from them. The less they knew the better.
I was a self-appointed bachelor and happy to have the title. Everyone thought it was time for me to settle down and find a nice girl. Well, no thank you. This cowboy wanted to stay clear of relationships. I wanted the freedom that came with no strings.
But what did I know? Nothing apparently. Everything changed when I looked into her green eyes; my world tilted when she smiled at me.
What was this feeling? Whatever was happening had me losing my damn mind. I fumbled with my words. My body wasn’t my own. I wanted her . . . desperately. Was I ready to give up my bachelor days, or was this Irish girl simply an itch I needed scratched?

Books in Series:

Cowboys & Angels Series by Kelly Elliott

Books by Author:

Kelly Elliott Books

I’d had enough of everyone talking about this new Irish bar coming to town. I didn’t want to think about a rival and what it would mean for my business. The pretty little thing on the other side of my bar was giving me a smile that screamed she wanted my attention, and I was happy to give it to her.

Time to end the family conversation I’d been having with my siblings on this subject.

“It’s been real, but I see fun over there. I need something to take my mind off the competition, if you catch my drift.”

Waylynn frowned. I knew she had seen the girl staring at me. I also knew my older sister thought I was a manwhore, which, if I was being honest with myself, I was. I couldn’t deny it.

Giving my sister a wink, I turned around and ran right into someone.

“Shit!” I yelled out when her drink spilled all over me.

“I’m so sorry!” she said. Her voice sounded different, so I looked from my ruined shirt to her face.

My eyes caught on her green ones, and my breath stilled for a moment. Then she smiled and it felt like the fucking room tilted.

What. In. The. Living. Fuck.

“I didn’t mean to run into you,” she said. She had an accent, and I couldn’t pick it up, but fuck if it didn’t make her all the sexier, in a sweet, adorable sort of way.

Except, I wasn’t into sweet and adorable. At least that was what I told myself to get rid of the weird feeling in my chest when I looked at this woman.

I smiled and watched her eyes light up. “No worries, sweetheart.”

Her tongue ran over her lips so fast that if I hadn’t been looking at her mouth, I’d have missed it. My cock instantly went hard. I needed to get away from this one, and fast.

I headed toward the woman who hadn’t taken her eyes off of me since she walked into my bar. She grinned and told me her name, which I forgot in less than five seconds because I couldn’t pull my eyes off the pretty little thing I’d just run into.

Nodding at Ms. No-Name, having no idea what she said, while my eyes were glued to Ms. Sweet & Adorable was not a good combo. What was it about her? She was a looker. Hell, even pretty. Pretty? Shit…she was gorgeous! I’d never seen a woman so beautiful. Her dark hair and green eyes made my chest tighten and that freaked me the hell out.

But I couldn’t look away. I watched her as she walked to the bar and handed her glass to Jack, one of my part-time bartenders. She laughed at something he said, and I balled my fists, pissed at the idea that he was making her laugh.

Jesus, take the wheel cuz I’m about to lose my shit and fuck all if I know why.

I squeezed my eyes shut and quickly opened them just in time to watch my green-eyed beauty walk out of the door. The entire place felt cold…something was off now that she was gone.

Who was that? Where was she from? Was she walking over to talk to me and I blew her off? If so, I’m such a fucking prick! What in the hell made her eyes so green? I’d never in my life seen anyone with eyes like the color of an emerald. I couldn’t get them out of my head. They reminded me of the meadows on the ranch in spring.

“So, want to take me back to your office, handsome?” the girl hanging on me purred into my ear. Her voice reminded me of my mission to get laid.

I cleared my throat and stepped away. With a forced a smile, I replied, “Sorry, darlin’. I need to go take care of something.”

Her smile fell and for a moment, she looked more pissed than disappointed. “Enjoy your evening, ladies,” I said to her and her three friends before I made my way through the crowd and back to my office.

Sitting in my chair, I pulled up the camera feed from the bar and went back a few minutes until I found her.

She was standing with her drink in hand as Jack pointed in my direction. My throat tightened as I watched her walk directly toward me. She looked like she might have said my name, but I never heard her. She went to talk to me again, taking a step closer when I turned and ran right into her.

“Fuck,” I mumbled.

My emerald-eyed beauty had been looking for me, and I blew her off. Raking my fingers through my hair, I let out a sigh.

Zooming in on her face with the camera that caught people walking out of the bar, I stared at her. I scanned her face while I tried to memorize those eyes. I leaned back in my chair and slowly shook my head.
Harley and I had our whole lives planned out, until her plans changed, and those plans didn’t include me.
After years spent trying to get the love of my life out of my head and repair my too-damaged heart, I thought I was finally moving on…but life sure has a funny way of letting you know when those best-laid plans are about to be turned upside down.
My entire world was rocked when Harley unexpectedly moved back to Oak Springs. Every miserable moment I’d spent trying to get over her and every hour I’d wasted trying to erase her from my life came back to haunt me the minute she walked into my office, fear in her eyes, and asked me for help. Would I…or better yet, could I walk away from her this time after all that she had put me through?
What I really needed to know is would I be able to forge ahead with the future I had so meticulously planned—one that didn’t include Harley—or will her return finally open my eyes to a future full of endless possibilities?

Books in Series:

Cowboys & Angels Series by Kelly Elliott

Books by Author:

Kelly Elliott Books

Spring break, Senior year in college

I pulled in next to Harley’s father’s truck. I smiled when I saw Harley standing in the middle of the field looking out toward the west. The sun still had a few hours to set, and her eyes closed while she soaked in the sun. This was her favorite spot to come on her folks’ place, and I’d known she would be right here. Something hadn’t been right over the last two days.

“Hey there, beautiful.”

Glancing over her shoulder, her mesmerizing light-emerald eyes lit up. Those eyes had haunted my dreams for months after she left for college. They were a stunning green with specks of gold.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her arms unfolding and dropping to her sides.

“Your folks said you needed some air, so I figured you’d be here.”

Her smile was soft, barely reaching her eyes. I knew Harley Carbajal like the back of my hand. We’d been friends forever and had dated since high school. I already had an engagement ring ready for after our college graduation. I promised both her daddy and mine I’d wait until we’d finished before I asked her. We only had a few more months; they never said I had to wait until after graduate school.

“Yeah, I needed some fresh air.”

I nodded and walked up next to her. “Feel like company?”

“If it’s you? Always.”

Pulling her into my arms, I leaned in and kissed her. It didn’t take much to get Harley to melt in my arms. If I wanted her, all I had to do was talk a little dirty, and she’d be begging for me to take her right here. She was my first, and I was hers. It didn’t take us long to figure out we both liked to have a bit of fun when it came to sex. Harley liked it romantic—and sometimes a little rough.

“What’s going on in that pretty little head of yours?”

She smiled, but this time I knew it was a forced one. “Nothing, really.”

I decided to let it go and tell her my good news.

“Dave Hassell was pretty happy about me getting in UT’s law school. He’s offered me a position at the law firm this summer. I mean, I won’t be doing anything major. More like an intern, but I’m going to take it! This is a great step toward starting my own law practice.”

This time her smile was real. “That’s amazing, Tripp! I’m so proud of you.”

“The even better news? He’s going to offer me a partnership in his law firm when I graduate from law school. I know it’s a few years away, but just knowing I’ll be able to come back home and start practicing law right away means a lot. We can build that house we dreamed of, and you can start building up your veterinary practice, and who knows? Maybe kids will be in the picture a few years after that.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Doc Harris already has a practice in town,” she said softly.

“Then you can work for him. Who knows, maybe he’ll offer you a partnership as well. He’s gotta retire one day, right?”

Her eyes drifted to the ground. “I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

I pulled her into my arms. “You never know.”

“Tripp, have you ever thought about not living in Oak Springs?”

Laughing, I replied, “No. Never. This is our home. I can’t imagine leaving my family and moving away. Besides, our dream has always been to own one of those old houses off Main. I’d love to have my law offices out of one.”

Harley pulled away from me. “That’s the whole thing. It’s your dream, Tripp. Not mine.”

My heart felt like a brick as it fell to my stomach.

“What?”

She folded her arms over her body. “I don’t want to settle down in Oak Springs. I want to travel and see the world. I want to know what it’s like to live in a big city. Maybe a loft overlooking the hustle and bustle of everything. My Aunt Tanya told me about some of the amazing places she’s traveled, and I can’t stop thinking about how fun that would be.”

My brows pinched together. “So, is this something you’ve just decided, Harley? We’ve always talked about settling down in Oak Springs.”

“No, you’ve always talked about it. I’ve just listened.”

I swallowed hard and turned away from her. My head was spinning. Racing through the catalog of endless conversations we’d had had about our future—I realized she was right. The conversations were always one-sided, and I’d been too caught up in the excitement of our future to notice that she’d not been participating in the plans I was making.

What in the fuck happens now? I can’t lose her. I won’t lose her.

Facing her again, I forced a smile. “Then, that’s what we’ll do.”

Her eyes widened. “What do you mean?”
Six. Years. Younger. Let’s not forget he’s also one of my brother’s best friends.
Oh, the other problem I forgot to mention… I never wanted to fall in love again.

Summer

I didn’t hear a word that the interior designer was saying. I was focused on the way Jonathon looked in those Wranglers. And his boots. And the freaking black cowboy hat that made his grey eyes stand out. I swallowed hard.

Jesus…could this guy get any hotter?

Jonathon caught my stare from across the room. When he smiled my panties nearly disintegrated. The man had never even touched me, and yet one look from him and I was damn near panting.

Yes, he could get hotter. Christ Almighty.

Before I could stop myself, my tongue ran over my dry lips. Jonathon’s brows rose and his boyishly handsome smile turned into a sexy-as-hell grin. When his eyes smoldered, my breath hitched.

I wiped my brow. Shit, is it hot in here?

Jonathon knew where my dirty little mind had taken me, and I was pretty damn sure his was going in the same direction. I closed my eyes and tried not to picture anything sexy, but failed. Me…up against the wall with him buried deep inside me, giving me a long overdue orgasm.

“Waylynn? Waylynn?” Ann’s voice pulled me from my naughty thoughts.

Popping my eyes open, I cleared my throat. “What? Huh?”

With a sweet smile, Ann repeated the question I had totally tuned out.

“The color scheme. Are you good with it?”

I frowned. What in the heck was she talking about? Color scheme? “Umm.”

The young woman waited patiently, while I stood there with my mouth open like an idiot.

“Color scheme?” I asked with a slight smile.

Ann laughed. “Did you even hear a word I said?”

My eyes darted to Jonathon. He was leaning against a desk in the middle of the room. It was the only piece of furniture that had been left by the previous owners of this space. His arms were now crossed over his massive chest, and he wore a shit-eating grin. Did the man know how freaking handsome he was? That sex appeal dripped off of him?

He winked, and I had to lock my knees to keep from falling.

Bastard.

He knew exactly where my mind had gone, because his was there as well.

Turning back to the interior decorator, I replied, “I’m so sorry. Jonathon was distracting me.”

One quick glance back and Jonathon’s smile vanished, replaced by a shocked expression. “Me?” he asked.

I nodded. “Yes. You.”

Ann was now staring at Jonathon. I could see by the look in her eyes and the way she chewed her lip that she was having similar thoughts. It was obvious by the way she was trying not to look in his direction while she talked. She was probably the same age as he was, and that pissed me off. Then again, I had to remind myself that Jonathon hadn’t been staring at Ann. He’d been staring at me.

“What did I do?” Jonathon asked.

I wanted to say that his hotness was making my panties wet, and the throbbing between my legs was making it hard to think, but I decided it was best to avoid the truth.

“That desk you’re leaning on. I keep wondering why the previous owner left it?”

Jonathon looked down at the desk as Ann asked, “Do you want to keep the desk? It would be beautiful refinished.”

I shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

Jonathon walked around it. “I’m sure we could put this to good use. I can come up with an idea or two.”

His head lifted and his eyes caught mine. I swore they turned as dark as the night sky. I swallowed, trying to ignore the pulse between my legs.

“Yes, I’m positive we can come up with a few ideas. Maybe you can even use the desk in your office,” Ann added.

I forced myself to look away and focus on Ann. “Yeah, maybe. Okay, so the color scheme?”

Clapping her hands, Ann started into the soft greens and blues. I had to stay focused on her lips, avoiding the temptation to look at the stud cowboy who was now walking around the room behind us.

“You’ve made a note of the wood floors I want in the studios?” I asked. Ann nodded and looked over to Jonathon.

He held up his folder and gave it a little shake. “I’ve got it all in here.”

“Now, Waylynn, do you want a window covering in your office for privacy?” Ann asked.

Why I turned and looked at Jonathon was beyond me. The left side of his mouth rose, and if I had been turned on before, now I was practically dead.

With a grin, I replied, “Yes. You never know when you might have that certain someone stop by and give you a quickie against the wall.”

Jonathon laughed while he shook his head and walked to the area that would be for the parents while they waited for their kids.

Ann stared with her mouth gaping. “Oh, um, I wasn’t really thinking for that purpose, but okay!”

It was time to wrap this shit up. The sexual tension in this room couldn’t get any heavier.
But is it too late? Have I pushed her into the arms of someone else?
Hell no am I letting that happen.
I’m on a mission to win the heart of the only woman I’ve ever cared about—and the only thing standing in my way is one stubborn and pissed off Corina.
I always did like a challenge.

Books in Series:

Cowboys & Angels Series by Kelly Elliott

Books by Author:

Kelly Elliott Books

Dragging my hands down my face, I dropped my head back against my truck seat.

What in the hell did she do to me?

I lifted my head and glanced over to Corina’s house. The last twelve hours had been the most amazing of my life. The feel of her lips on mine, moving in and out of her body… Fuck. It would forever replay in my mind.

“What in the hell did you do, Mitch?” I whispered as I stared at her door.

It was pretty fucking clear what I did. I spent the night with Corina like a greedy bastard. Took everything I could get from her and seared it into my brain…and now I was going to walk away, too damn afraid to admit I had feelings for her.

With a shake of my head, I started my truck and headed home. The sound of her sweet moans was still vivid, and the feel of her hands moving over my skin had left a burning trail in its wake.

“Fucking hell,” I yelled, slamming my hand against the steering wheel.

I made a U-turn and headed to Cord’s. He lived above his bar, and I knew he would be home. It was too early for his ass to be up and gone.

After parking, I made my way around back and hit the intercom.

It didn’t take long for him to answer.

“This better be good!”

“It’s me…Mitch. Can I come up?”

“Jesus. You slept with her, didn’t you?”

“Can I come up or not, asshole?”

The door buzzed, and I took the steps two at a time. Cord had remodeled the historic building. The bar took up the first two floors, the third and fourth housed Cord’s bachelor pad—except I was pretty sure he’d never actually brought a girl up here.

The door to his place was open slightly, so I walked in. I could smell coffee brewing as I met Cord in the kitchen.

“Coffee?” he asked, holding up a mug. “Or something stronger?”

“Coffee and something stronger,” I mumbled, sitting at the countertop island.

He poured some whiskey into my mug and set it in front of me. “You know Tripp called dibs.”

I blew out a long sigh, and I took a drink.

“Fuck Tripp and his damn dibs. He knew I liked her and that was the only reason he called dibs. Don’t make me feel any guiltier. Just remembering her face this morning as I left is killing me.”

“What do you mean?”

I shrugged. “I mean she had that look, like she hoped for more.”

“Did you give her the impression that it was more than a one-night stand and wait a fucking second, did you say this morning?” His eyes widened. “Dude, you didn’t. Please tell me you didn’t stay the night with her.”

“I was only going to walk her to her door and one thing led to another and…yeah, I stayed all night.”

Cord’s head dropped. “Aw, hell. Mitchell, Paxton’s gonna kick your ass. Dude, you can’t be playing around with a girl like Corina. She’s not like the ones who are happy with a quick piece of you. She’s the long-term, want-to-settle-down-with-a-nice-guy kind of girl.”

I groaned. “Fucking hell. The worse part about all of this is I wanted to stay with her. I stood at her door this morning and stared into those blue eyes and had to force myself to leave.”

Pushing off the counter, Cord walked closer. “What do you mean, you wanted to stay?”

I dragged my hands down my face. I felt like shit. “I mean I didn’t want it to be a one-night stand. I wanted to spend the whole fucking day with her. Find out every single thing I could about her. Go to breakfast and all that stupid ass shit a guy does when he’s attracted to a girl. Take her somewhere fun and devour her again later when we got back to her place.”

His brows pinched together. “Then why didn’t you? You can’t say it was Tripp because we both know he would have gotten past the whole claiming dibs.”

“I can’t. As much as I wanted to stay with her…I couldn’t do it.”

“Why the fuck not?”

“Why haven’t you?”

“I haven’t met the person who makes me want to stay the night, and have breakfast in the morning, and spend the day with. If I did, I sure as shit wouldn’t have walked away from her for no goddamn good reason.”

I jumped up, nearly knocking the stool over. “I have a goddamn reason!”

“What is it, Mitch? Why did you leave Corina when you really wanted to stay?”

My heart pounded, and I fought to find the answer. Why had I left the person who woke up my heart for the first time in my life?

My phone buzzed with a text. Pulling it out, I said, “I’ve got to go, I just got called in. Looks like they found a body earlier this morning in the Frio.”
Moving back home to my parents’ cattle ranch in Texas was the last thing I thought I’d be doing.
But, here I stand … in front of my high school girlfriend. A beautiful, confident woman has replaced the young girl I once knew and loved. Hell. I’m still in love with her.
Yep. Paxton Monroe was my first love and the one girl in town who now hated my guts. So much so, Paxton swore her revenge on me if it took her until the day she died. The last words she spoke to me were a vow to cut my dick off and shove it down my throat.
The fight between my heart, my head, and last, but certainly not least, my dick starts tonight. Because all I can think about is how I want to be buried so deep inside Paxton she won’t remember how I broke her heart, or how I left her when she needed me the most.
But who will win? My heart is too broken to listen to my head. And my dick, yeah it’s not listening to anything or anyone. Not until it gets what it wants and what it wants is Paxton Monroe.
Lost Love is book one in the Cowboys and Angels Series.

The rushing water of the Frio River wasn’t enough to drown out the sound of Paxton’s tears. They replayed in my head, and nothing would ever be able to erase them.

Lifting the beer to my lips, I took a long drink. My brother Cord sat next to me. He was the only one who knew the terrible secret that would haunt me forever.

“She hates me,” I mumbled.

“Right now she does. She won’t always.”

I finished the bottle and set it next to me. It was the night of my high school graduation and one of the worst days of my life.

“I left her. She told me she was pregnant, and I freaked out and left her. The only thing I could think of was how our lives would be ruined.”

“You came back, Steed.”

Letting out a gruff laugh, I shook my head before dragging my hands down my face.

“I came back too late. I’ll never forget the look in her eyes when she told me she lost the baby and I breathed out a sigh of relief. I’ve never seen her so gutted.” My head dropped, and I felt the tears build in my eyes. “She told me she never wanted to see me again.”

Peering up, I turned to my brother. “What do I do, Cord? I love her more than the air I breathe and she can’t stand the sight of me.”

He shook his head then shrugged. “Give her time. That’s all you can do.”

My heart told me to run after her. To pull her into my arms and show her how sorry I was. Beg her to forgive me.

If only I’d listened to my heart and not my head.

Ten years later

I pulled up to the gate and grinned. Ten years ago, I left Texas after graduation and made my way to Oregon. I hadn’t seen home since.

With a quick peek up, I passed under the driveway sign that led to my father’s cattle ranch.

“Is this it, Daddy?”

Glancing down to the beautiful blonde hair and blue-eyed girl in the front seat, I nodded. “This is it, pumpkin.”

Her smile grew bigger. “I can’t wait to see everyone! Do you think they’ll be excited to see me?”

My chest tightened. “Of course they will, Chloe. They’re family.”

Chloe frowned. “Mommy was never happy to see me.”

That’s because your mommy was a fucking bitch.

I’d met Kim, Chloe’s mother and the first woman I’d dated since Paxton, towards the end of my senior year of college.

“Mommy had problems. Loving herself was hard, pumpkin, so it made it even harder for her to love anyone else.”

Chloe nodded. Like she always did when I told her the same answer about her worthless mother.

When both of Kim’s parents died, she fell into a serious funk. The only way I knew how to pull her out of it was ask her to marry me. It was stupid. I was stupid. When I realized I had made a huge mistake, she begged me not to leave. The night I told her I wanted a divorce she told me she was pregnant. Nine months later Chloe arrived and Kim turned into a completely different person. Her thirst for my family’s money was the only thing that drove her to stay in the marriage. For some insane reason, she thought she could get her hands on my parents’ wealth through me. It took years of fighting, keeping visits with my family a secret.

Finally, I played off a lie that my parents had disowned me. Kim gave up and divorced me. I’d asked her for a divorce so many times her hate for me grew after each attempt, making my life, and unfortunately Chloe’s, miserable.

“Daddy, am I a bad girl if I don’t miss mommy?” Chloe asked, staring at her little feet.

I took her hand in mine.

“No, pumpkin. I don’t miss her either. I wish we could have come to Texas a long time ago, and I’m sorry I wasn’t able to make it happen sooner.”

She smiled. “We’re here now! And I know I’m gonna love it! It’s our new home.”

“It’s always been home.”

Home.

The one place I longed to be, but was also scared to death of. Memories of this place were dangerously strong, but Chloe and I needed family. She needed a sense of normal after five years of utter crazy. And I needed to right a wrong that was long overdue.

Paxton.

I wasn’t even sure she still lived in town. For all I knew she was married to Joe asshole Miller. I pushed the thought from my mind.

“Let’s go see Granddaddy and Grammy,” I said.

Chloe fist pumped. “Yes! I’m so excited. Can I ride a horse?”

“Yes,” I replied.

“What about a cow?”

“If you want.”

Her eyes lit up as the gate swung open. “Really? I can ride a cow?”

Laughing, I nodded.

“Does Granddaddy have goats?”

“Yep.”

Chloe’s head dropped back in the seat. “I’m so happy, Daddy!”
