When the Carolina Cold Fury’s hottest young star gets blindsided by an ex with a scandalous secret, it’s game on.
“One of the best voices in contemporary romance.”—New York Times bestselling author Lauren Layne
Marek Fabritis is used to delivering blows, not receiving them. But when he gets tipped off by an anonymous email about his ex-girlfriend, the news leaves him ice cold—and it’s not because Gracen Moore is getting married to a total jerk. It’s the fact that Marek has a three-year-old daughter he never knew about. Now he’s going back home, not to play knight in shining armor but to make damn sure that no man takes what’s his. For the first time, there might be something more important than hockey.
Gracen Moore has always loved Marek. That’s why she let him go, so he could pursue a career in the NHL. And that’s why she never told him about Lilly. Only now does Gracen realize that she made an unforgivable mistake. But is that any reason for Marek to crash her wedding and make an epic scene? If the spark that still smolders between them is to be trusted, maybe. Still, Gracen’s not getting her hopes up. Because she knows better than anyone that appearances aren’t always what they seem. . . .

Yeah, that’s what Reed had told me on the phone yesterday, and my response?

“Get off my fucking back.”

No way in hell I’ll ever admit to his face he’s right, but it doesn’t mean he’s wrong. I know I’ve got to quit ignoring the truth of my life right now and figure out some way to accept that today it’s vastly different than I’d ever imagined it would be.

Goddamn Gracen. Keeping such a secret from me.

A daughter.

Lilly.

I’m scared as fuck.

I sit in the gloom of my garage, the ticking of my car engine slow and steady as opposed to the beat of my heart, which is erratic. I’ve been gone for three days at the beach with Holt, staying drunk most of the time and ignoring the mess of my life back here in Raleigh. I’d still be there too if Reed hadn’t called me yesterday and torn me a new asshole over the way I’d been ignoring Gracen and Lilly.

Gracen is the easy excuse. I’m so angry at her I can barely stand to be in the same room. Our conversations have been brief and stilted. I left her a credit card so she could buy whatever she needs, and outside of some basic instructions regarding the house alarm and how to work the TV, we haven’t spoken much. Lilly doesn’t bear my anger, but I know she’s feeling it. She hardly looks at me when we’re in the same room, however brief it may be.

I’d even reasoned to myself that leaving for a few days would give Lilly some respite from the tension within the house. Of course, I know her mother has got to be stressed to the max, and that’s probably affecting Lilly, but I choose not to let that be my problem.

I’d done what I set out to do. I stopped Gracen from making a fool of herself by marrying Owen Waller, and now I’m saddled with an ex-girlfriend I’d left behind long ago and a new daughter I had not expected nor frankly wanted.

My life is fucked.

With a sigh I get out of my car and pocket my keys. My feet are heavy as I walk up the three short steps that lead into the mudroom. My spine is locked tight in stressful anticipation of any confrontation I might have with Gracen, and acid churns in my gut over the thought of having to engage with a child who looks just like me but I have nothing in common with.

Christ, I know nothing about kids.

I mean, nothing.

I open the door quietly and slip inside. The mudroom leads into a short hall. Turn right and I’m in the laundry room. Turn left and I’m in the kitchen that opens into the living area. The sound of the TV hits my ears first and I go even more on edge. That means one or both of the females now in my life are just a few short feet away, which means conversation is inevitable.

It’s going on 9 P.M. and I have no clue if Lilly is even still awake. No idea what time toddlers go to bed. All I know is that the late nights I’d been coming home this past week were late enough that Lilly had been sleeping and thus I didn’t have to deal with her.

Didn’t mean I wasn’t curious about her, because I am. It just means I don’t know how to fucking deal with this.

My kitchen lights are off, but the glow of the TV in the living room illuminates the area enough so I can navigate around the counter. I hope to slip unnoticed past the couch, but Gracen’s head pops up. I can see by the heaviness of her eyelids she’d been sleeping.

She stands up and rubs her face before looking at me. “We need to talk.”

“I’m tired,” I say, and start to head into the formal room, the other side of which is the master suite. I’d put Gracen and Lilly upstairs in the guest bedrooms.

“No, now,” she says firmly as she walks around the couch toward me. She turns on a floor lamp and blinks from the light.

“Tomorrow,” I mutter as I walk away.

“We’re leaving tomorrow,” Gracen says in an unyielding tone. “So if you want to hear what I have to say, you better stop and listen. Tomorrow will be too late.”

That stops me dead in my tracks. I turn slowly to face her. “You’re not leaving.”

“Yeah, I am,” she says angrily. “Lilly and I are virtual prisoners here. You demanded we come here, threatening to take her away if I didn’t, and then you ignore us for a week. We don’t know anyone here, and I don’t even know whether to look for a job or not. But more importantly, and why I’m willing to risk your wrath if we leave, is because Lilly is confused as hell as to who you are and what your purpose in her life is.”
Hockey season may be over, but in New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett’s new novel, a Carolina Cold Fury heartbreaker is heating things up off the ice and eager to score with the girl next door.

No one skates like Reed Olson. In the off-season, no one plays like him either. After back-to-back championships, Reed craves a different kind of action. Good thing there’s no shortage of women ready for a summer fling with a sports star. Reed has a specific type—blond, busty, not too bright—and a little black book full of options. But when his bed starts rocking, it’s his unexpectedly sexy neighbor who comes knocking. And the brainy beauty is impossible to ignore.

Josie Ives desperately needs something her celebrity neighbor obviously doesn’t: sleep. His headboard banging against the wall is keeping her up at night—not to mention inspiring some very naughty dreams. Reed is everything she imagined: a little too good-looking, with a body that puts Greek gods to shame. But he’s also funny and charming—a tempting combination. Josie’s the opposite of his type, yet the chemistry between them is undeniable. Their friendship certainly has its benefits, and it’s heating up to be so much more.

A bead of sweat trickles down my temple as I start to drive deeper.

Harder.

Faster.

Anything to get her to stop talking. How in the fuck she can have coherent thoughts when her ankles are resting on my shoulders is beyond me. I sure as hell can’t think straight. Nothing past getting her off so I can tumble after.

“I’m going to Fiji next week,” she tells me in staccato bursts, each word popping out of her mouth to match my thrusts. “You should come with—”

Fuck this.

I pull out, flip her over, and draw her up to her hands and knees. I drive back in and am rewarded with a long moan in return that seems to go on and on and on.

Finally. Her yammering has given way to the sounds of pleasure, and I can get back in the game.

One hand on her hip, the other on her shoulder to hold her steady, I give it to her hard. She told me that’s what she likes, but fuck if you’d know that by the way she was trying to carry on a conversation.

This position seems to work, and all talk of a trip to Fiji seems to be forgotten. As my breath starts coming out faster and my balls tighten, her moans turn into screams.

Sharp, piercing, eye-watering screams. The type that make me think my ears are bleeding, and I suddenly long for her to start talking again.

I consider for a brief moment slapping my hand over her mouth, but thankfully she lets out one last bloodcurdling shriek as she starts to come. Probably more from relief her screams will stop than from anything else, I go ahead and let loose, one last thrust, and I have a lukewarm orgasm at best.

Flopping to the mattress beneath me, I’m boggled when she turns over and says, “Like I was saying, you should come to Fiji with me. I’m doing a swimsuit shoot and…”

She keeps talking but I stop listening. Jesus, when did casual sex get to be so difficult? It makes me wonder if celibacy and the palm of my hand isn’t the better option. I roll off the mattress and pull the condom off. I notice her sit up on the bed, her mouth still moving as words pour out. I stare at her, and I just don’t hear a word.

With a sigh, I head into my bathroom, where I ditch the condom in the toilet and flush. Bracing with my hands on the vanity, I lean forward and take a good, hard look at myself in the mirror.

I don’t look like a guy who just had some amazing sex with a supermodel.

Well, yes, she’s a supermodel, but the sex was mediocre at best.

Fuck…maybe I’m getting tired of sex. I sure hope to God I’m not, because I really don’t want to be celibate.

“Reed,” she calls out from my bedroom. “I’m going to grab some water out of the kitchen. Want some?”

“Yeah,” I call back, although I really don’t. I want to go to sleep in my bed.

By myself.

I want to sleep in and be lazy tomorrow. It is, after all, the start of my summerlong vacation. It’s what a hockey player does when he just won the Stanley Cup. Not a fucking worry or responsibility other than trying to stay in shape.

My doorbell ringing startles me from staring at myself in the mirror.

What in the hell? It’s past 1 A.M.

Walking back through my bedroom, I snag my jeans from the floor and slip them on. My master bedroom is on the second floor, so I make it down the stairs and to the foyer just as the bell is ringing again.

Without looking through the peephole, I swing the door open and stare dumbfounded at a petite brunette woman on my porch. I note she’s wearing pajamas. Pale blue cotton pants and a matching T-shirt that while somewhat baggy can’t hide the fact she’s got a nice pair of tits. I also note that her long hair is a tangled mess and she looks cranky.

“Can I help you?” I ask her as I stand on the threshold, holding the door halfway open.

At that same moment, warm hands slide around my stomach from behind and I feel a naked body pressed up to my backside. A bottle of water appears in front of me from an elegantly manicured hand and she whispers in my ear, “Here you go, baby.”

I take the bottle but don’t spare her a glance, instead watching as the brunette on my porch narrows her eyes at me.

“Yes, you can help me,” she says in a husky, raspy voice, and I wonder if that’s her normal voice or her “I just woke up” voice. She points a finger at the woman clinging to my back. “You can put a muzzle on Screaming Barbie there. Her shrieks are enough to wake up the dead, so you can bet your sweet ass they woke me up.”
Score one for the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team as a stone-cold badass melts for a woman who makes his blood run hot.

As one of the league’s toughest enforcers, Van Turner is ruthless on the ice. He plays hard because it’s the only way to channel the rage boiling inside, and a reputation as an A-hole is better than everyone knowing the truth. Van has spent his entire life running from a secret that’s kept him from getting involved in relationships—or accepting lucrative deals with East Coast teams. Then the Carolina Cold Fury makes him an offer he can’t refuse . . . and Van meets a woman he can’t resist.

Simone Fournier is the stubborn one in her family—and that’s saying something, considering her brothers are two of the Cold Fury’s biggest stars. Simone gets what she wants, and what she wants is Van. Still, there’s a part of him Simone can’t reach, no matter how hard she tries. In private, he’s all fire and passion. In public, he freezes her out. Van may want to push her away, but Simone won’t let him go that easily. Because this time, she’s playing for keeps.
We’re in the home stretch of the regular season with the first round of the play-offs starting next week. Our practices have been light since we’ve clinched the top spot and the coaches want us as fresh as possible. I decide to apply that same reasoning to myself—staying fresh as possible. I’m a procrastinator by nature and I fucking hate working out. It’s a necessary evil, but if I can get by missing one without feeling too terribly guilty, I’ll do it.

Lucas comes out of his bedroom and heads into the kitchen. I can tell by the subtle waft of cologne that follows him as he walks by the couch where I’m lying that he’s going out tonight. I assume he’s seeing that woman he met from the museum. He seems pretty taken with her, which works fine by me. He spends a lot of nights at her apartment, so I have this little house to myself much of time. This is good, because I don’t like to be around people that much.

Since Lucas and I both came to the team at the same time, the Cold Fury management asked us if we wanted to room together until we had time to settle into the area. This seemed like a good idea to me—Lucas as well—so we rented this little house for six months. It’s been good so far and we keep out of each other’s way. But I’d been straight up with him a few days ago when he was telling me about this woman he’s seeing—I think Stephanie’s her name. I’d told him I didn’t make a good friend, which is the truth, and since then he’s not shared anything personal with me.

It’s been all, “I’m ordering a pizza, want in on it?”

Or, “Dude, it’s your turn to take the garbage out. It’s starting to smell.”

Like I said…I’m a procrastinator.

I can hear Lucas rustling around in the refrigerator as I keep my eyes on the news. It’s one of the things I’m a little obsessive about, and if I’m around a television at 6 P.M., I’ve got the news on; first to catch the local, then to catch the national. It’s been a habit of mine since I was a little kid, and yes, I was a weird little kid, no thanks to my parents. It’s why I got my ass kicked so much in grade school.

There’s a knock at the door and I don’t even flinch. I’m being lazy, so I can only muster the strength to roll my eyes to look at Lucas. Yeah, he’s definitely got a date tonight. I can tell by the way he’s dressed and his hair is styled. He stares back at me, holding a water bottle in his hand.

“Are you going to get the door?” he asks before taking a sip of the water.

“Why me?” I drawl.

“Um…because you’re closer to it,” he suggests, and that’s true.

With a heavy sigh, I roll off the couch and take three strides to reach the front door. Like I said, this house is tiny, tiny, tiny.

I swing the door open, not knowing if it’s a neighbor, a Jehovah’s Witness, or perhaps even a crazed fan. Don’t give a fuck either…whichever it is, they’re not getting my time.

My entire body seems to lock for a moment, though, when I take in the beautiful woman standing on the doorstep. She’s got several pieces of luggage on the porch at her feet, and I have to admit, this is the craziest stalker incident I’ve ever heard of.

Too bad she’s crazy, because she’s fucking hot as hell. Long brown hair with lighter streaks of caramel, and hazel eyes that sparkle with intense curiosity as she watches me. I’m wondering if her fan crush is on me or Lucas.

But then it hits me…brown hair, hazel eyes.

Fuck, this is Lucas’s sister. I’ve seen the picture of his family on the entertainment unit that houses our living room TV and I recognize her.

Sweeping a hand from Lucas’s direction toward the woman on the front porch, I step back a bit so Lucas can see her and ask him, “Something you’re not telling me?”

“That’s my sister,” he says as he walks toward us.

Yeah, figured that one out on my own. Just not sure why she’s here at our house.

With luggage.

I turn to look back at his sister as Lucas approaches, and I’m momentarily startled by the way she’s checking me out. Eyes actually dragging down my body, and back up again with pure female appreciation. If I didn’t have such a hard shell in place, I’d actually be a little weirded out that one of my teammate’s family members would be so obvious, but truth be told, I just don’t give a fuck.
The Carolina Cold Fury hockey team is stacked with hotshots. But when a new player joins their ranks, he learns that even superstars can’t go it alone when it comes to love.
Lucas Fournier is only serious about one thing: hockey. The league’s fun-loving charmer, Luc is always up for a good prank or a great lay, and he has no intention of settling down. But being traded to the Carolina Cold Fury—and to play alongside his big brother, Max—is no joke. With another title in sight, the last thing Luc wants is to let his new teammates down. To succeed, Luc will need to keep his head in the game and the most . . . er, demanding member of his anatomy in check. But when temptation hits, Luc hits back harder.
Museum curator Stephanie Frazier has always put business before pleasure, which just about explains her nonexistent sex life. But when Stephanie meets Luc at a champagne-fueled gala, she finds herself flirting like crazy—and going home with the uninhibited athlete. For one night, she learns what passion is all about. She just never counted on the little surprise Luc leaves behind. And that’s when things really start to get . . . interesting.
Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling Carolina Cold Fury series can be read together or separately.

Books in Series:

Cold Fury Hockey Series by Sawyer Bennett

Books by Author:

Sawyer Bennett Books

Prologue

Lucas

This is not the first charity gala I’ve attended, but it is the first being held underneath a thirty-eight-foot Acrocanthosaurus fossilized skeleton on Valentine’s Day. I have to say, the dinosaur makes this event so much better because of the location and the fact there’s a large stuffed satin heart attached to the skeletal structure right around the area I believe the heart would have been.

We’re at the North Carolina Natural Sciences Museum. I’m here with my Carolina Cold Fury teammate Van Turner, my older brother, Max, and his fiancée, Jules. My crazy brother proposed to her in a magazine article, and she accepted just two days ago. Van is new to the Cold Fury, just as I am. We’ve been here less than two full weeks, both of us brought in to beef up the defense, as the Cold Fury is taking a very focused shot at a repeat Stanley Cup victory.

I want to hoist that cup more than anything in the world, so the answer was a big “fuck yes” when my agent contacted me to see if I was interested. Actually, I think it was more like “fuckity fuck fuck yes,” because Max was the starting goalie for the Cold Fury and we’d never played on the same team before once we went professional.

I’m attending this black-tie gala tonight to help raise money for the museum. It’s not a cause that’s near and dear to me, but I’m here because Brian Brannon, the team’s owner, gave Max four tickets, which cost two hundred dollars each. He couldn’t come because his daughter, Lexi, was in a car accident three days ago and landed in the hospital.

Let me qualify by saying his new daughter, Lexi. Gray Brannon, the league’s only female general manager, announced it at a team meeting. Lexi is a long-lost daughter whom Brian purportedly didn’t know about and she’s recently shown up. More surprising is that she’s dating Roman Sýkora, because he and Gray Brannon don’t get along.

Gotta love the drama.

That’s not the only thing causing stress within our locker room. We’ve got the play-offs looming in just a few months, and right now we’re at the top of our conference and want to keep that going in. But we have some key players injured, which is a major stressor, and because Van and I are new to the team we’re trying to fit in to their system.

Add that Gray’s pregnant and due in a few months, and that makes for a moody GM. I wonder if something’s in the water, because our team’s captain, Alex Crossman, is expecting a baby as well in July with his wife, Sutton. Zack Grantham, our second-line left winger, and his wife, Kate, are expecting a baby in August. He’s injured and riding pine, so he’s extra cranky, but he’s supposedly going to be good for the play-offs.

I sip my champagne and glance at Max and Jules. “You’re not pregnant, are you?”

“I’d like to be married first,” Jules says dryly. “And why would you ask that?”

I shrug, tucking my free hand into my pocket. “Seems like everyone’s getting pregnant lately. Gray, Sutton, Kate. It’s like a virus.”

Max chuckles. “Well, when you settle down, little bro, you’ll be thinking of babies at some point.”

There’s no controlling my visible shudder. Not at the thought of babies, but at the thought of settling down. Did you know it’s statistically impossible for a professional hockey player not to get laid if he feels like it? Why would I ever give that up?

“Just make sure you practice safe sex,” Van says with a wink. “Then you’ve got no worries. At least 99.9 percent of the time, if she’s on the pill.”

Jules rolls her eyes and drains her champagne glass. “I’m going to walk around and check out some of this exhibit.”

Max slips his hand around her waist. “I’ll come with.”

“Later,” Van says as they saunter off, then he and I are standing shoulder to shoulder watching the crowd. There’s a silent auction going on right now and people are circulating around the tables to put in their bids. The event is being sponsored by the Carolina Cold Fury and thus some members have to be here tonight to represent the team. I never mind dusting off my tux and rubbing elbows with people, because generally I’m a sociable guy, and who doesn’t like doing something charitable?

“How much longer do you think we have to stay?” I mutter out of the side of my mouth to Van while keeping a pleasant smile in place.

“Half hour?” he asks back.

“Done,” I agree as my eyes move over the crowd.

“I’m going to hit up the hors d’oeuvres,” Van grumbles to me. “It’s the only reason I came.”

He hates these things and bitched and moaned about it the entire time he was driving us here tonight. He’s my temporary roommate for now and seems pretty chill, but he can be kind of an asshole at times.
