“Where is she now?” I ask one of the top men on my team, Cooper. He’s the only one I can handle keeping his eyes on my girl. That’s because the man is madly in love with his wife. At one time I thought that was a weakness. Having someone take up so much of your head space wasn’t something I was used to. Making decisions based on what someone else thought about you wasn’t my style either.

Savannah has changed that for me. She consumes my thoughts on a daily basis. I’ve been so wrong in the past. I am willing to admit it. When it comes to Savannah Castile I am never too proud. If you ask me, a weak man is one who can’t admit when he’s wrong. I learn from my mistakes and make sure I don’t make them again.

“Still inside her penthouse condo,” Cooper repeats for the dozenth time today. It’s Sunday and normally my girl is doing a million things. It’s easy to trail her and I do it myself usually. Today, though, she is holed up in her home. I don't like it. Not one fucking bit. She hasn't seemed to be ready to take us to the next level so I have been biding my time. I am letting her play her little cat and mouse game. She is enjoying it and I find that I enjoy doing things she likes. She needs to see that we can have so much more enjoyment once I catch her.

She knows I follow her. She gets off on it as much as I do but today she hasn’t left home. That isn't going to work for me. I’m not missing my Sunday of seeing her. The final straw was her not answering the phone when I called her. I could see she was reading my text messages. I think she turned on the read receipts just so I knew she was looking at them and not responding.

This cat and mouse game is over. I am always down for a good hunt but this is different. She is different and I am over the game. She has been provoking me and now she is going to see just how far a man like me will go to get what he wants. She is ready to be caught even if she doesn’t realize it. I do and that’s what really matters. The fact that I can read my girl so well is a testament to how well I know her. She is driven but at the same time she can easily get lost in her own head.

I can hear Cooper’s breathing grow heavy. The thud of his boots taking the stairs as fast as he can. “Tell me when you have eyes.”

I have a feeling my girl is lying out on her rooftop patio enjoying the sun. How else does she get that perfect sun-kissed skin that glows? She knows what she is doing to me. Ever since her brother’s wedding she’s been a little bit off. It was clear to me that her other brother Cullen isn't far behind in getting married himself. That man stared at the Mad Chef, as many call her, like she hung the moon in the sky for him alone.

Savannah is in denial that she is mine. She keeps skirting around the fact that we belong together but deep down we both know this will end with her being my wife. I’ve tried to give her time but time is up. There is no hiding from me. I don’t care if you live in one of the most secure buildings in New York City. I didn't become the man I am without knowing how to get in and out of anywhere. It’s what I’ve been trained to do and have done most of my life. I retired from an agency of the government that doesn't even have a proper name.

I’ve taken those skills and started a business to protect the elite of the elite. For those that can afford me, that is. Sure, I know that makes me sound like a pompous ass but I’ve done my duty for my country. Now I am using the skills I’ve honed to line my bank accounts. My mom, rest her soul, told me to never do anything you're good at for free. The rich love to throw their money around and there is no one better at my business than me. I am more than willing to pick it up for them while keeping their asses safe. If they follow the rules.

Savannah never follows the rules. It’s why she needs me as her husband. She needs a full-time service detail and I am more than willing to fill that spot. I know she thinks I will try and cage her in but you don’t cage a woman like Savannah. Why would you even want to? I merely want to be the man that is there for her to lean on. The one to take care of her. She always puts on a strong front. She is strong but you should always check on the strongest. They too need someone to be their rock sometimes. I want to be hers so badly I ache for it. Maybe I’m a liar and think these things to reason with myself that she needs me, Really, I’m the one that needs her. My only hope is that it goes both ways.

“You ever kill anyone?” I steal a glance at Cullen as we make our way to the local bar down from my place. The man is too handsome for his own good. Is being too handsome even a thing? It should be. A man can’t be so attractive that it makes your chest do funny crap. That definitely should be against the law. Too bad he is a cop and isn’t going to arrest himself.

I have to give him a point for arresting the woman who tried to attack my sister Luna’s fiancé, Maddox. My sister would have probably been attacked next if it weren’t for Cullen. He is winning my favor even if I don’t want him to be. I could reason he only did it because he wanted to protect his brother and it’s his job.

“Not today.” He smirks over at me. One perfect dimple pops out. Of course he has a dimple to go with his sandy blond hair and blue eyes. It makes him look hotter than he already is. Damn it. Yep, there should really be a law against this. His looks are in stark contrast to his brother’s. While Maddox is handsome with black hair and green eyes, I prefer the light hair and blue eyes of my man. I catch myself mid-thought. I must have lost my mind for a second because Cullen is certainly not mine. Luna and Maddox’s crazy love fest must be contagious.

The shiny badge he has hooked to the top of his slacks wasn’t how I determined he was a cop. Not a cop but a detective. I’d gotten every piece of information about my sister Luna’s fiancé the moment she’d started stalking him. Or investigating him. Same shit, if you ask me. I knew he had a cop brother and socialite sister. Once she stopped, her fiancé Maddox and his brother Cullen started stalking our house. Pretty sure Cullen was trying to talk Maddox out of it but I enjoyed peeking out my window seeing him outside. My sister failed to mention that Maddox had a super-hot older brother. I only received basic information about Cullen. My informants like to gossip so it didn’t take much for me to get the goods from them. It was a perk of cooking for the rich and famous.

“Oh, you’re one of those kinds of guys. You like to keep a girl in suspense.” I roll my eyes, faking annoyance. Now I really want to know.

What I learned about him was he was a good old boy. Follows the letter of the law above everything. It would never work between us. Not that I am thinking about an us. I don’t do those unless you count Luna, my little sister, who I raised. We’ve always been an us. Now I think she’s going to be an us with someone else.

The thought has me both happy and sad. I am overjoyed at the fact that she has found someone who fits her but I am struggling with the realization that it means I am going to be alone. I bet this is what empty nest syndrome is like. I try not to think of it negatively because I want the best for Luna, and Maddox is that. He gets her quirks.

“With you I think it might be the only way to keep your attention at all.”

I pause as he opens the door to the bar close to my and Luna’s place. It’s going to be awkward when I’m no longer calling it that. I know if it’s up to Maddox he’ll have her moved in with him by the end of today. I’m just hoping I get a little more time with her. Maybe I’ll get lucky and be stuck with handsome Cullen for the rest of my life. A girl can dream. But I know that won’t happen. We are night and day.

“After you.” Cullen motions for me to head inside. I must have been standing there lost in my own thoughts. Way to go MJ, you’re already making a fool of yourself. I get myself together and walk over to one of the high-top tables that seats two. I’m not going to turn myself into a mess over a man. I don’t chase or stalk.

Cullen follows behind me, making sure to pull my stool out for me. He’s being such a gentleman but I’d expect nothing less from him. I can feel his presence behind me as he inches my stool closer to the table. He lingers there for a moment. I catch the scent of him, causing my body to heat up. They must have upped the thermostat in here. I don’t remember it being this hot.

I feel something brush my hair softly. I freeze. Did he just smell my hair? No, that would be weird. Right? At what point is this weird? My sister is marrying his brother Saturday and they didn’t even date. Maybe strange behavior runs in the Castile family. Rich people do weird shit and the Castiles are about as rich as they come. I find it intriguing Cullen ended up a cop, though.

Luna

“Is it stalking if I’m paid to do it?” I blow a bubble almost as big as my head after I ask the question to my sister MJ through the phone. It pops when I jump at the sound of the knife coming down hard on a marble cutting board. Sometimes I think she became a chef so she could stab stuff. She is freaking good at it too. Maybe the best in the city.

“Who cares?” she throws back before the knife hits the cutting board again. “Your new gum habit is annoying,” she says before making another hard chop. It is a little bit gross too. My jaw aches from the big ball of now flavorless gum. I have to keep adding more to keep the flavor going. Now I’m out of gum and flavor. I grab the magazine lying in the seat next to me, rip a piece off and spit the remainder of my gum into it. I have to remember to throw that away before MJ gets back into her car since she’s letting me borrow it. She never uses the thing and I have the perfect parking spot so I haven’t moved it myself either. I use it for work, which means I just sit in it and watch people—at the moment only one person. I didn’t want to lose the spot so I took the subway home, leaving the car sitting outside the building I was stalking, I mean surveilling.

This has to be one of the most boring jobs I’ve ever had. That’s saying a lot because I’ve had way too many jobs at this point. Chewing gum is all there is to do in this car as I sit and wait. I have to keep my eyes trained on the door. I’ve made the mistake of playing with my phone twice now and losing my target. I’m not going to do it again. Why does there have to be a Pokémon Go stop right on this building? The temptation to play with my phone is too great. The only thing keeping me from doing it is I want to see him again and I really don’t want to fail at another profession.

“He is always working,” I sigh into the phone. I thought being a private investigator was going to be fun. I should have known better. The online classes I took were super boring. I chalked it up to all classes being boring, besides that time I went to clown school—that was fun. Even though I failed. My eyes flick to the rearview mirror. A tiny mark that most people don’t notice still lingers on my forehead. It’s a constant reminder of the first and last time I tried to juggle.

“So he’s not a cheating bastard? He’s only a workaholic?” MJ stops chopping as if she can’t believe it. MJ believes the worst of everyone. We did have some pretty shitty parents. She was my rock over the years. She is almost eight years older than me and more of a mom at times than a sister. She raised me. She made sure to take me with her when she moved out and I was only ten at the time. The only person she isn’t prickly to is me.

“I don’t know,” I admit. Maybe he is banging the secretary? It’s so cliché that it’s boring and since his assistant is a man, it would mean he’s gay. I don’t know what this woman wants me to find out about him. She didn’t give me much. I know he’s not married. That much I found out with a background check. My client, however, did wear a wedding ring. When I asked her she said she was the one asking the questions. She was super aggressive so I went with it. I need this job and to finally be successful at a profession. My sister always excels at everything she does and I want that for myself. I’m not jealous of her; I just want to be good at something, anything for that matter. I want to make her proud too. She doesn’t seem to mind my endless career changes. She always smiles and tells me I’ll find my passion soon. That not everything has to happen right now.

“Did you check his social media?” I hear MJ put down the knife. The soft clicking I hear alerts me to the fact that she’s already digging. She always keeps a small laptop on the counter with her when she cooks. Her vice has always been reality TV and she plays it while she works in the kitchen. She’s gotten me sucked into too many of the shows. I know she does it on purpose so she has someone to talk to about them.

She isn’t going to admit her secret vice to anyone else so I am the one always playing catch-up on reality TV. MJ would never admit it but she loves gossip. As long as it has nothing to do with her. She was more down with me doing this PI thing than I thought she was going to be but now I am understanding why. This is a reality show happening right in front of her and she is living it out through me. Too bad it is ending on another super boring night, except when you actually get a glimpse of Maddox Castile. The hottest man I’ve ever seen in a suit in my life. MJ would never agree on this. Our tastes differ on most things. I’d sit in this car for a week just to catch one glimpse, that’s the level of attractive Maddox is.
