Merritt
Chaos. Merritt isn’t sure how the locals have survived without killing themselves, but he’s starting to understand why the fates decided he needed to help with the portal. He’s a nurse. Yes, fate was brilliant with pairing mates and keeping excitable dragons from killing themselves on a regular basis. Luckily for fate and his newfound mate, Merritt is ready for a few changes in his life.

Pierce
Chaos. Pierce isn’t sure how anyone in town survives the chaos they create on a regular basis. As a lawyer nothing should surprise him, but he’s doing his best not to pull his hair out when the fates decide to reward his patience with a precious gift. His mate. His adorable little mate, who luckily for all involved, has fallen in love with the craziness.
When a frustrated lawyer meets a little whose job in life is to save his Daddy from bad manners, two lonely lives will never be the same…and neither will the portal

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Pierce

“Are you sure we aren’t already in an alternate reality? Another planet? One of those Marvel multiverse things?” The locals were all so strange. “There are clowns everywhere.”

“I don’t know.” Frowning, Wren shrugged. “Um, they’re all kind of weird, but I’m pretty sure we haven’t gone through a portal.”

Since we were in the crazy town to figure out what was happening with the portal, I hoped we hadn’t gone through it accidentally.

But with the number of clowns I was seeing, anything was possible.

Clowns.

Not even just stupid people running around asking weird questions…they had clowns.

“They go well with all the sparkly white decorations, though.” Wren probably only liked it because he was little and loved anything sparkly, but he wasn’t exactly wrong. Reality-bending choices aside, it was beautiful…but he was just accepting the insanity at face value.

He wasn’t even questioning why some of the flowers had a very magically manipulated vibe to them either.

Did carnations naturally come in glittery white?

I’d seen any number of oddly dyed flowers at the weddings I’d been dragged to over the years, but something was off with perfectly sparkly flowers that didn’t seem to droop even when half the vases were dry.

One of the clowns had clearly been in charge of watering them.

“It’s…how did we get dragged into coming to a wedding reception again?” His sigh at my question said he knew whose fault it was.

“But everyone is so nice.” Barely pouting, Wren aimed wide eyes at me, looking very much like the bird he’d been named after. It wouldn’t work, but he liked practicing on me since he hadn’t found his mate yet. “And they said we’d get cake.”

I’d have bought him the fucking bakery if it would’ve kept me out of the strange party.

“I’m pretty sure half the room doesn’t understand why they’re here.” I wasn’t exaggerating either. Someone had already come up to me asking if I knew when the baby was due and several kept looking at the clowns like they were aliens. “This town is odd.”

And it wasn’t the mix of human and other that mingled so easily.

“I think it might be all the people from the different councils.” Wren liked to see the bright side in everything. How we were related I’d never know. “The locals seem to understand why we’re here because they’re very angry they didn’t get to go to the wedding.”

“How did you hear that?” The only thing I’d picked up was that the couple was a mixed pair and true mates. There’d also been something about bugs, but I couldn’t decide if they meant listening devices or actual insects.

And asking hadn’t gone anywhere either.

“I go to the diner more often than you do.” Wren shrugged, having happily thrown himself into the town chaos. “The gossip’s hot there, not the bakery.”

That explained why he’d picked up a passion for diner food since we’d gotten to the ridiculous town.

“The men at the bakery don’t ask me nearly as many strange questions as the ones at the diner.” I still couldn’t decide why I should tell anyone if I was Team Pony or Team Binkie.

I’d gotten the distinction more quickly than several other newbies in the diner had at that point, but it wasn’t anyone’s fucking business if I wanted a pony or a little. Unfortunately, my refusal to participate and maybe my frown at the whole ridiculousness put me in something they were describing as Team Badass.

I hadn’t asked what that meant since the men kept frowning and nodding like I was an interesting science experiment.

Pressing his lips together to keep from laughing, Wren was saved from my frustration by a hush coming over the crowd. He’d happily announced binkies were the best and then explained I was his cousin and still believed in the quaint notion of privacy.

Quaint.

He’d actually used that word.

“They’re coming. Shh.” I couldn’t place the voice but they weren’t terribly old and everyone quickly obeyed. “Quiet.”

Half the room looked very confused and the other half were vibrating with excitement. Even the clowns looked ready to explode in a shower of glitter as the door started to open.

“Surprise!” The excitement finally burst out of them and the sound was thunderous.

The men at the door were clearly mates and obviously faking their surprise, but everyone else seemed to believe it, so I decided to keep my thoughts to myself.

“Oh wow.” The human gave wide eyes and looked around the room like he’d never imagined anything like it. “This is…”

Horrifying.

I was starting to understand why they’d gotten married in secret.

“Congratulations!” Another random round of excitement rushed through the room, and I was pretty sure I heard several people saying, “Happy birthday,” and that one old woman who seemed to think we were at a baby shower called out, “It’s a boy,” which made the two men try not to laugh.
Paxton
Bugs. Well, beetles, but it doesn’t matter because they keep disappearing. Poof. Insects, bugs, or just creepy crawlies, Paxton doesn’t care what they’re called because they’re the most fascinating creatures he’s ever seen, and as an entomologist, that’s saying a lot. But since he’s currently in the most frustrating town he’s ever seen, there might be a connection.

Fraser
Bugs. Fraser is fascinated by the adorable bug doctor who’s running around town digging in the dirt and playing with bugs. He also agrees with the rest of the nuts in town that Paxton has to be a little. But there’s one big question on everyone’s mind. Does Paxton know he’s not as vanilla as he seems to think he is?

When the bugs are vanishing and the locals are perplexing, falling in love just might be the easiest part of Paxton’s magical discoveries.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Paxton

How were there never any normal questions from anyone in the entire town?

“I’m…I don’t know?” I wasn’t even sure what the question meant, much less how to answer it.

The old man sighed and looked at me almost sadly, like he thought I was stupid. Some people said I was too cute to be a scientist but no one had ever said I looked like an idiot.

But this one was shaking his head.

“What flavor of little are you?” Enunciating the words slowly, he kept going with the strange topic. “We just need to know your category so we can make sure we match you up right.”

I knew we weren’t talking about work and I knew he wasn’t taking my lunch order, but that was all I could narrow it down by.

Was he senile?

Half the diner was staring at us like they were waiting for my answer, so to me, that said they thought he was still fully functioning.

But how was that possible?

“Do you have a list I can choose from?” I wasn’t sure if I was being smart or rude, but my question had him freezing in place.

Was I supposed to apologize?

After a few seconds, he came back to life and turned to the rest of the room. “He’s new. He doesn’t know where to start. We should’ve realized that.”

Oh.

That sounded dangerous.

I’d somehow made it worse.

I’d traveled all over the world. I’d eaten insects and bugs in strange places. I could explain US politics to a variety of cultures and have it make sense.

But I had no idea what the people in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina were doing.

Maybe the reason they had such unique flora and fauna was because the water was poisoned?

Too many toxins in the water could explain a lot.

Right?

“He’s not educated like our Kenzie or Lorne.” The old man continued to shake his head. “He doesn’t even read those educational dirty books like Stefan.”

There were educational dirty books?

No, that wasn’t what I was supposed to be paying attention to.

It was what caught their attention, though. Half the room started shaking their heads and most of them kept shooting looks of pity my way.

Not sure how I’d ended up in this situation when I’d just been looking for lunch and to ask about the local insect population, I watched the strange scene unfolding in front of me. There were a few people who didn’t seem to notice or care about what was going on but everyone else was riveted.

It was like that Amazon trip all over again.

But that’d made more sense.

“Where do we start?” Another older man with a woman who seemed to be his wife or partner frowned and crossed his arms, but he seemed to be taking the situation as a challenge if I was reading his body language right. “If he’s this confused, we can’t just send him to the library to get books on the subject. He won’t even know where to begin.”

Well, he wasn’t wrong about that assumption, so I wasn’t surprised when everyone else started nodding along and giving me more confusing expressions.

Old man number one turned back to me. “Well, we’re going to help you figure this out. Don’t worry.”

How was I supposed to respond to that?

“Thank you?” I’d clearly made him happy based on his smile and the way he reached out to pat my head, but I still didn’t know what was going on.

The man was very confident, though. He glanced around the room and chuckled. “He’s so polite, just like the rest of them.”

Okay, so I was doing something right.

Something cute, maybe?

Politeness was definitely a good thing, so I filed away that knowledge and decided not to leave my notebooks in my car ever again.

“I—” I wasn’t sure what I’d been going to say, but my ramblings were cut off by the owner or cook coming out of the kitchen with my lunch.

“Here you go.” She frowned at the room and gave them a stern glare that had half the patrons squirming. “Let me know if you’re being bothered.”

I wasn’t sure what it meant that she was ignoring the first old man who’d seemed to be trying to be helpful, but since explaining that I wasn’t sure what was going on would only make me look stupid, I smiled. “Thank you, ma’am. I’m fine.”

That had several people making aw sounds like I was an adorable toddler, but it made no sense at all. The only thing I could connect it to was the politeness comment from a moment ago, but there was nothing else to go on.

Why hadn’t I at least taken a few more classes in cultural anthropology?

Classes on flowers and insects weren’t helping me at the moment.

“He got tomato soup and grilled cheese. See?” The old man was smiling as he shook his head. “I told you.”
Alick
Mates. As a human, Alick’s never been jealous of flying or magic, but mates…well, that’s worth a bit of envy and a dash of bad decisions. But with magic in the air and a mate who might be under a compulsion, all he can do is pray to the ancestors that they haven’t killed his potential mate…or worse.

Grady
Troublemakers. Grady’s always known his mate is out there somewhere waiting for him, but what he never expected is to be put under a compulsion or to find his mate in the strangest town he’s ever been to. But with the magic of mates and an adorable little who needs a Daddy and a bit of confidence, anything is possible.

If a spell can find wallets, keys, and phones, surely it can find where Alick’s mate has wandered off to, right?

67k words

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Alick

“I thought he’d lost a sex toy, not a person!” Carrick’s voice kept getting louder, and even though I wasn’t the target of his frustration, he still made me nervous.

“You shouldn’t make assumptions about things like that.” Lorne shrugged and didn’t seem to realize how close he was to getting zapped by his mate.

Or worse.

Caged.

To me, Carrick looked like he was plotting murder or a wicked scene, but either way I wanted to get out of the line of fire.

Mages were kind of nuts when they got this irrationally pissed off, and since the crazy mage didn’t love me, I wasn’t going to take any unreasonable chances.

“Lorne, what exactly did you tell Carrick?” Daddy Monroe was being especially Daddy with his tone, but he also stepped between the two men, so he was smart too. “I’m not sure the…the lost your shit spell was meant for people.”

“It wasn’t!” Carrick’s tone was almost squeaky he was so worked up, so I slowly took a step toward the back door. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to make it across the whole kitchen if he started slinging spells or Lorne did something stupid like shift, so my goal was to get as close as possible just in case.

Mages and dragons lost all common sense when shit like this happened.

Lorne shrugged and seemed to be trying to play dumb. “Um, well, I think I told Papa that Alick lost something important and private, and we’re not supposed to talk about private, so I couldn’t tell him what it was.”

Tapping on his cheek like he was in some kind of movie, Lorne sighed and swished the sequined skirt he was wearing from side to side. “Then I gave him a blow job?”

He hadn’t told me that part…no wonder it’d taken so long to go find Carrick.

Daddy Monroe groaned and rubbed his hands over his face as Carrick took a few deep breaths and started pacing. “Okay, in the future, if you ask for something like this, you have to be very specific about what’s going on. That’s a rule that I’m not going to negotiate on.”

“But privacy is very important.” Lorne looked like he was going to be stubborn on that and I could see his Daddy trying to decide what to do.

His brain must’ve worked faster than mine because he subtly shifted and crossed his arms over his chest. “So is your safety and Alick’s. Is this something we need to have a longer discussion on?”

Lorne was still for several seconds before hunching over and huffing. “No, I promised not to argue about safety things.”

Oh.

That was a smart rule because he had manipulation problems and impulse control issues…which was what had gotten us into the situation to begin with.

I should’ve asked more questions, but we’d gotten just slightly tipsy and Carrick had been so nice about the whole thing…that’d clearly been the post blow job happiness working in Lorne’s favor…and the fact that he’d thought I’d lost my favorite sex toy had probably made him a bit giggly too.

But I was definitely asking Lorne more questions next time, even if I didn’t want to know the answers.

“You’d feel very bad if you or Alick got hurt.” Daddy Monroe sighed and managed to make us all feel guilty with the soft sound. “And what if the spell injured Alick’s mate in some way?”

Wait.

What?

Lorne was Lorne and only focused on what he wanted to hear. “You think it will work? I was just worried it’d been a week and he hadn’t turned up yet.”

Daddy Monroe looked like he couldn’t decide how ridiculous the situation had gotten and I couldn’t blame him. “I have every faith in Carrick’s abilities, but the spell was not meant for people.”

“Someone used it to find their pet rabbit once and they got every rabbit within a hundred miles showing up on their doorstep.” Throwing up his hands, Carrick started pacing faster. “That might just be an urban legend but what if it’s true?”

Did he think my mate was a rabbit?

Could mates multiply like rabbits?

“I don’t think Alick’s mate is a rabbit, Papa.” Lorne was doing his best to look cute, probably because he’d finally realized Carrick was still losing his mind. “But if he has a few mates out there, then I’m sure he’ll have fun. He’s very sturdy, so having multiple mates won’t break him.”

“Hey, I’m not that big…or fat.” Just because I wasn’t a cute twink like most of the littles in town didn’t mean I was fat.

“I said sturdy.” Lorne frowned and gestured in my direction. “You’ve got bulging muscles and a nice big dick. You’d be able to be fucked into next week and your mates wouldn’t have to worry about breaking you. That’s a good thing.”

As I opened my mouth, Carrick threw up his hands again and interrupted. “His dick size is not in question at the moment.”
Lorne Sparkles. As the most fabulous dragon that has ever graced the skies, Lorne always pictured his mate as…well…at least slightly shiny. He knows he’s incomparable, but he thought his mate would match him in some wonderfully glittery way. What he’s not expecting are two mates who seem to think black is a lifestyle and not a sin against fashion.MonroeMages. When it comes to insane mates, nothing holds a candle to a drama queen mage who expects the worst…but their oblivious cutie who always has his head in the clouds is running a close second. As a Daddy without a little and a mate who’s all alone, though, Monroe knows it’s time to stop waiting for fate to have all the answers.CarrickDragons. They’re a pain in every conceivable way, but Carrick knows he’s stuck with them when fate matches him with not one but two illogical dragons who seem to have been put on the Earth to drive him crazy. Unfortunately, it seems like their insanity might be one of his favorite things about his unexpected mates. When one mate isn’t as innocent as he appears and the other two are diamonds in the rough, three men will come to realize that mates are always meant to be.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Monroe

Well, it looked like the quiet librarian was just as kinky as everyone had predicted and just as shy as expected judging by the not-so-quiet pep talk he was giving himself. “It’s just toys and nosy neighbors. That’s not scary.”

I liked him, even though shy and slightly skittish wasn’t my thing, and it was nice to see a familiar face, so I stepped closer and tried to make him laugh. “I happen to think the neighbors are scary, so don’t feel bad.”

Fuck.

The way he jumped and whirled around in the entrance said I hadn’t been as loud as I’d thought I’d been. Holding my hands out to my sides, I took a step back and did my best not to look like I was about to hold him up at a bank robbery or steal his wallet.

Most of the locals knew I was safe, but newbies always panicked first and asked questions later. “Sorry. I said hello but now I realize you didn’t hear me.”

The librarian relaxed as soon as he realized who I was, recognition quickly showing in his eyes as he let out a breath. “I was talking to myself and panicking too much. I’m sorry.”

I appreciated seeing how quickly his fright receded but that didn’t mean I made any sudden moves. However, Stefan smiled brightly and looked like he was in the library, not getting ready for a littles play party at the VFW Hall. “How did you like the new series you started? I’ve been expecting you to be in any day to get the next book.”

Books were clearly his comfort zone, so I let my hands come down to my sides and smiled, glad to be able to distract him. “Work’s been busy lately, so I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s good.”

“That’s wonderful.” Fidgeting, Stefan rocked back and forth before glancing deeper into the building. “Do you know about the…the meeting tonight? It’s my first time coming.”

With how badly it seemed to have been explained to him, I wasn’t surprised that it’d taken him a while to show up.

“Yeah.” I wasn’t much for randomly sharing about myself, but I tried to look relaxed and pleasant as I nodded and forced myself to open up to the nervous sub.

It wasn’t my natural state unless I was dating someone but it seemed to be what he needed, so I pushed back my own reservations. “I’m not sure I’m what some of the subs are looking for, but half the town stopped by the shop over the past week and made sure I knew the playdate was tonight.”

They’d been a pain in the ass, but it’d been clear that if I wanted to get anything done, I’d have to come to at least one.

Stefan bit his lip before a giggle slipped out. “Everyone is very nosy.”

He seemed to enjoy that part, so I couldn’t help chuckling. “Yeah, I think they’re at the end of their rope with me, so I figured I’d at least show up once to get everyone off my back.”

Stefan’s nod said he thought that was a good plan. “Is wishing you luck appropriate?”

He looked adorably confused about that, and I couldn’t hold back a grin, but luckily he wasn’t offended and shrugged, returning my smile. “I have no idea what I’m doing here or what’s bad manners.”

Another issue that someone in town should’ve thought about…including me.

But in my defense, I hadn’t wanted to seem like I was coming onto him or being as nosy as everyone else, so I’d done nothing. Which, looking back, might not have been the right option. I’d been telling myself that Boyd would do it, mostly because it was obvious how head over heels he was for the new librarian, but again, not a good plan.

“Not going to assume I’m going to ask you out?” Stefan’s adorable blush had me chuckling again. “I’m teasing. I appreciate the thought.”

He straightened and seemed to find some gumption with my teasing. “No, because the woman at the post office told me that you’re looking at getting to know someone else. I just didn’t realize she was warning me off because of…well, because we might have a mutual interest.”

I couldn’t help groaning and shaking my head. “This town…”

Not that she was wrong…but he hadn’t needed to know that.

Stefan’s grin said he didn’t seem to find it as frustrating as I did, but he hadn’t lived in the crazy town his whole life. He probably thought they were cute or quaint, but I was ready to drown most of them. A few I might just put sugar in their gas tank, but most were beyond just a bit of torture.

“The town is very curious and I’m fairly certain someone will arrive to shove us in the door if we don’t actually walk in ourselves.” Stefan glanced around like he wasn’t sure if he was teasing or not, and I knew the feeling, so I laughed.
StefanMagic. As a librarian, Stefan knows there’s magic in books and imagination, but it isn’t until he moves to the mountains of North Carolina that he realizes people can come with magic too…well, the locals at least seem to come with magic…and fascinating relationship dynamics he thought were just on TV and in books.Boyd Dragons. Somehow, the council gave Boyd the job of telling the new librarian that dragons and mages are real. He’s not sure who he pissed off to be the one to scare the adorable librarian into leaving town, but he’s not happy about it. A man as sweet and shy as the town’s new librarian can’t have any idea about what the locals are hiding or what kind of thoughts Boyd has been having about him, can he?When people aren’t as innocent or grumpy as they seem, a curious librarian and a slightly grumpy dragon will learn that love is even stronger when there’s a bit of magic involved.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Stefan

“Do you remember his name?” One of the wonderfully fascinating locals was right outside my office window, but I wasn’t sure who it was just yet. There were a few of them that seemed to be related and all sounded a lot alike, but if I peeked, they’d realize I could hear them.

Being curious and doing my best to be subtle about it was the classic rock and hard place in this area.

“I just call him Mr. Librarian. It’s polite.”

I knew that one.

It was the deputy’s Kenzie.

He was funny and actually telling the truth…he always called me Mr. Librarian.

“How does he not know you’re a little?” The next confused voice made me want to smile. I knew that one too. I was getting so good at remembering everyone.

That was Alick the human.

“I don’t know.” I could almost picture Kenzie’s shrug. “Everyone knows I’m little.”

Well, I knew he was interesting, but I hadn’t really understood what that meant until he’d helped me expand my reading material.

He asked the library to stock the most unique books.

That was when I’d started to realize there were several different types of interesting people in town and they overlapped in a fascinating Venn diagram with paranormal creatures and kinky people intersecting in curious ways.

It was like living in the weirdest fairy tale ever.

“Well, maybe we just shouldn’t use his name then?” Knowing the other two voices helped me realize that this one was Lorne.

He was in the interesting overlapping part of the Venn diagram too.

“He doesn’t mind Mr. Librarian.” Kenzie’s voice took on a stubborn tone and I was pretty sure that was why Alick giggled. “But I won’t argue with you.”

He wanted to, though.

Kenzie was very stubborn when he wanted something…like the library stocking more dirty books.

“I remember. His first name is Stefan.” Alick sighed like the other two were insane. “But don’t ask me his last name. I might’ve heard it once but everyone just calls him the librarian like he’s some kind of ancient superhero. But his first name is Stefan, because that sounded like the name of one of the Disney princes, so I remembered that.”

Well, not quite one of the princes but he was close…and he was also right about everyone in town calling me the librarian. It sounded like we were in some kind of weird old western where only locals and other paranormal creatures got names.

I wasn’t even sure they realized they did it, but they seemed oblivious about a lot of the weird stuff that went on around the area.

“Wait. I don’t think that’s a prince.” Kenzie seemed to have found something new to latch onto. “We need to look that up.”

It seemed like we’d narrowed it down to the fact that none of them watched enough Disney movies.

“Well, we’re at the library, so let’s do it here. I get no bars on this side of town anymore.” The way Lorne was complaining made me want to ask him if he’d been hexed again, but I wasn’t sure if that was polite or not.

There were a lot of topics I wasn’t sure I could ask about, which was probably the hardest part of having to pretend that everyone was human.

I had so many questions.

“We are not going to ask the librarian for help looking up which Disney character his name is from.” Alick’s tone said he’d rolled his eyes and I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing. “We’re already going to sound weird enough and we don’t need to push our luck.”

Oh, why were they going to sound weird?

Sadly, no one volunteered that information.

“Come on. Let’s go talk to Stefan The Librarian and try not to freak him out.” Alick was going to freak me out just by saying things like that, but I didn’t have time to worry about that because I had to hurry back to the front desk.

It wasn’t nearly as easy to eavesdrop from there, but it couldn’t be helped.

Made it.

As they walked through the front door, I was approaching the front of the library from a totally innocent direction. “Hello, gentlemen. What can I help you with today?”

I’d spent the first month in my position being slightly nervous, so I was proud to sound confident and almost relaxed as I greeted the mix of people…two creature people and one human person.

No one had bothered to tell me what was the polite way to greet anyone yet and I had no idea what the social niceties were, so I just stuck with human pleasantries. Most of the time it seemed fine, but occasionally something I said made people giggle unexpectedly.

I was still trying to be the nice librarian who wasn’t nosy at all but they didn’t make it easy when they all exchanged looks like we were in a Scooby-Doo episode.
Talon
Aliens. Deputy Talon Winslow is pretty sure he’s protecting aliens, but he’s starting to get the hang of it…aside from a few interesting issues that keep popping up, like an armored truck going missing. His new job pays too well to be as simple as it looks, but he hadn’t expected glowing eyes and adorable littles who almost sparkle they’re so fascinating. But if aliens come in cute and kinky, does it really matter they’re not human?

Kenzie
Dragons. Kenzie can’t quite decide if the new deputy he’s planning on keeping knows about dragons and mages or not. However, it doesn’t take him long to decide it isn’t the most important question when dating the handsome, slightly puzzling human. When will he get to call him Daddy and if the deputy knows Kenzie is keeping him are much better questions.

When a small mountain town isn’t as boring as it seems, a slightly confused human and a dragon with a toy hoard will learn that there’s always a bit of magic involved when falling in love.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Talon

“Driving all over the fucking mountains just to ask random fucking insane people if they’d happened to see a truck full of gold just lying around where it didn’t belong.” I couldn’t stop grumbling as I drove around the curve in the mountain because it’d been a long-ass fucking day. “Because that makes perfect sense and that’s how police work is done when everyone knows everyone else.”

Sure it fucking was.

And no, the idiots I worked with in the sheriff’s office didn’t know everyone in the entire goddamned Blue Ridge Mountains—but it sure felt like I’d been driving over the whole fucking thing.

Just go around and ask nicely. It’s time you met a few more of the locals, buddy.

“There is no way I’m still in the right state, much less the same fucking county where I actually work.” But fuck if anyone would actually point out the goddamned boundaries. “But nooo, it’s all very normal.”

Bullshit.

Nothing about the job worked like it did anywhere else in the fucking US, and the only boundaries seemed to be where the aliens stopped and the normal clueless variety of humans were actually living. That got more and more obvious every time I turned around because the FBI didn’t casually make phone calls asking local sheriffs to poke around for missed armored trucks.

“Stupid old men with glowing eyes.” That was not an eye condition no matter what everyone tried to make it out to be.

Well, you know, people don’t like to talk about conditions…it’s rude to ask. We ain’t nosy like you city people.

Coming from fucking Raleigh didn’t make anyone city people, and the glowing eyes thing was not a fucking condition that came with hoarding tendencies and a bad temper.

I just wasn’t sure what it was.

“Stupid idiot cops who want a change of pace and something new to tackle deserve to be the butt of fate’s jokes and end up having to argue with aliens about the number of cars they were collecting on their property and if they’d happened to add an armored truck to their list of new acquisitions.”

Fucker was hiding something and it wasn’t just whatever fucking planet he came from. Aliens didn’t seem to lie any better than regular humans and he was up to something.

“Of course, searching his fucking hoard of junk is out of the question because that would be rude.” I’d somehow stumbled into the craziest fucking job ever.

But it was in a pretty area.

And it came with free housing.

And no one seemed to actually commit any regular crimes…the closest we got to that was a cute little kleptomaniac who couldn’t stop stealing five-dollar watches from the local version of the dollar store because they were sparkly.

“So it could be worse.” Maybe? “Where the fuck am I?”

Glancing down at the phone I’d been issued, which was just about the only tech in the entire fucking department, I realized I was coming up on my turn and slowed down.

We do things differently around here, buddy. Don’t worry. We really don’t need computers and that fancy shit.

“That’s fucking bullshit too.” But since I was also supposed to be pretending I hadn’t seen my asshole boss kill three fucking coffee makers just by touching them, it probably made sense.

Whatever kind of alien he was clearly didn’t play well with electronics.

He even had a goddamned rotary phone.

It’d only taken me about twenty-four hours to realize I’d been hired because I could use Earth tech without making smoke explode out of it, and I could handle talking to the outside world without sounding like I was from fucking Mars.

I should’ve realized something was up when I found out it paid better than any police job I’d ever seen.

“Idiot.”

But I was a well-paid idiot and even had a badass pension plan.

And I didn’t mind going to get the money for the watches anymore. That guy was cute and always very confused about how he’d ended up with the gaudy things. If there’d been a spark between us, I’d have asked him out, klepto or not, but he just seemed sweet and friendly.

I didn’t mind that he was an alien too.

I wasn’t speciesist or anything, but he would have to stop stealing sparkly shit if we actually dated, and I wasn’t sure he could do that.

“Fucking moron.” I was an idiot. “People who work for the government in any capacity shouldn’t date aliens. Every fucking sci-fi movie proved that point.”

But I had to stop grumbling and pay attention as I started up another windy road. “Who the fuck lives out here?”

Wait.

How far exactly was I from town?

My list of names and addresses had come on a piece of notebook paper and hadn’t included helpful commentary like careful, he’s nearly feral. My boss and I were going to have a chat about that because some of the delightfully interesting aliens I was supposed to be protecting didn’t have a damned bit of self-preservation instincts when it came to cops. “Fuckers are probably bulletproof, anyway.”
