You murder a man, and all of a sudden people are scared of you. Slate Solis went from being a guy that people went to in times of need to an ex-con that people crossed the street to avoid being too close to.
He knows he’s done wrong, but out of all of his sins, only one really bothers him—coveting thy neighbor’s wife. Harleigh Belle—the cute little lady that never gives him a second glance.
After seeing her for the first time while he was in prison, she’s stayed on his mind for three long years. Each time she comes in to visit with her friend on family day, he can’t help but stare. Then the day comes that he’s set free, and he’s almost disappointed that he’ll never see her again.
Except fate has different plans. He hasn’t been back in his house for more than three hours when he sees her. Harleigh Belle in all her glory…oh, and her husband that is everything Slate isn’t.
He tells himself that her being fifty feet away from him, all day every day, is a complete coincidence. One that he shouldn’t take advantage of. The more time passes, the harder it gets to stay away. Until one day, and one very ill-timed thunderstorm, ruin everything.
Who knew that baby-making-weather was a real thing?
Just kidding. I really did.

-Slate to Izzy

Slate

Three years ago

The first time I saw her I was shackled to a table with chains.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, trying to keep my eyes on Izzy but having a hard time doing that since there was a blonde woman that was about five foot nothing at the table next to me, giving the man she was visiting a rundown about a Chuck Norris race that she was running in about a week.

“I’m talking about the fact that our mother is a whore, and she tried to get the daycare that Astrid is enrolled in to allow her ‘visitation time,’” Izzy explained patiently.

I finally pulled my eyes off the blonde and looked at my sister.

“And this surprises you because?” I asked with a raised brow.

She sighed loudly. “I guess that it doesn’t. I’m just annoyed that I have to deal with it at all. I thought I got rid of her and she keeps popping back like a herpes outbreak.”

The blonde at the table next to us paused in her conversation with the man and looked at my sister with a grin on her face.

I sighed and tried not to stare.

It was nearly impossible, though.

I wasn’t sure what it was that drew me to her.

She was about five foot nothing with blonde hair that was arranged in a fighter’s braid down both sides of her head. She had bright pink strands that were woven throughout the braid, and at the very bottom, it transitioned into straight purple.

Her eyes were an eerie shade of green. Kind of like sea foam…but brighter.

She had the longest lashes that I’d ever seen, and that was saying something because it looked like she had zero makeup on.

Her forearms were absolutely tiny and were about the size of two of my fingers put together in width…but those forearms had so many goddamn bracelets that they went almost halfway up said arm.

“Are you listening to me at all?” Izzy asked. “Are you sick?”

I looked at my sister, once again peeling my eyes away from the blonde, and shrugged.

“You’re talking about our mother,” I said, sounding bored. “What did you want me to do? Say ‘huh, that’s weird?’” I asked. “Because it’s not weird for her. Honestly, I’m surprised she hasn’t tried to do anything before now.”

Izzy sat back with a huff and crossed her arms over her chest, looking adorably annoyed.

Izzy, my baby sister, had changed a lot since I’d gone to prison.

She’d grown into her own and had become a beautiful person.

Not that she hadn’t been one before, but there was a difference between the broken and scared doll that she used to be compared to the beautiful, confident, ‘I can do anything’ woman that she’d turned in to. Though, that had a lot to do with the fact that she was married now to a man that would kick anyone’s ass that ever hurt her—my mother included.

Izzy’s dark hair was in a bun on top of her head, and I was fairly sure she had a spit-up stain on the black t-shirt she was wearing. Not that I’d point that out to her yet. I’d make sure we got all the way through our visit before bringing it to her attention.

“I know,” she sighed. “I’m just…I’ve had a bad couple of nights with Astrid. She hasn’t slept much and she’s always in a terrible mood. And then Mom pulling that shit?”

She scrubbed her hands up and down her face. “And I had to clean a house yesterday that was a complete and utter pig sty. I wish I would’ve charged them more. I’m fairly sure they did a super deep clean right before I came over to quote them a price on cleaning for them. When I got there today? It was like a tornado had gone through it. I’m going to have to charge them more because it takes me longer to clean tornado destroyed houses than the one they showed me before.”

“Please tell me that you clean in Bear Bottom.”

We both looked over at the blonde who was now staring at Izzy with hope on her face.

“Uhh,” Izzy said. “I do.”

The woman’s face showed so much utter joy that I felt something low in my belly start to heat up.

“My name is Harleigh.” She held out her hand. “Can I get your number? Do you have a card? Oh my gosh. I’m so excited to hear this.”

Izzy’s eyes flicked to me and then back to the blonde, Harleigh.

Odd name, but it suited her.

“This is my man’s baby brother, Tray.” She pointed at the inmate next to me. I hadn’t actually seen him much, but that was because he was new and didn’t quite know his place in the hierarchy just yet, so he stayed to himself. “Dre, Tray’s brother, just moved his business to Bear Bottom and I’ve been doing my best to help him, but…it’s like cleaning up in the middle of a hurricane. It’s just not doable when the men don’t clean up after themselves—at all.”
There are always two sides to every coin.
Josiah ‘Liner’ Paldecki knew the moment he laid eyes on her that there was something different about her. Something special. Something so unique that it practically poleaxed him the moment that their eyes met.
Except, the next time he saw her, it was like she was a different woman altogether. There was a blankness to her eyes that concerned him. An air of menace about her that honestly scared him to death. He’s more than man enough to admit it.
At first, Liner thinks it’s because she’s bi-polar, or possibly psychopathic.
Then he realizes the truth. That there isn’t a single person that exhibits such different personalities, but two.
Two identical twin sisters, both completely different, yet exactly the same. One with a soul, and one without.
One that has his heart, and one that only wants to destroy it.
-The only thing to make Theo smile in 4 weeks

Theodora

“You’re going to do it, and you’re going to do it now, or I’m going to make your life a living hell,” my sister hissed in my face.

Another slap, followed by a vicious right hook to my stomach.

The air whooshed out of me all over again, yet I still didn’t agree.

I wouldn’t.

I wouldn’t.

Not today.

Not this time.

“Did you know that Tyson is in town?” my sister suddenly hissed.

I felt my belly start to sink.

No.

No, no, no, no.

“You’re going to do it.” My sister smoothed a palm down my hair, her breath fanning my face. “If you don’t, I’ll go do the same thing to our brother.”

I wanted to say that she wouldn’t.

But she would.

Mostly because she had.

My brother, Tyson, was my one and only friend in life.

He was my confidant, and the only other person aware of the sickness that ran in our family.

He was the success story, too.

He thought he’d made it.

But in reality, the only reason that he was able to live a life that was free of anything remotely sick—i.e. my sister, father, or my other brother, Andy—was because I sacrificed my freedom for his.

He didn’t know it, though.

I’d made sure of that.

“W-what do you want me to do?” I asked softly.

“I want you to go sleep with someone.” She smiled. “And make sure you get pregnant when you do.”

I would’ve laughed in her face had she not been serious.

“I…I can’t do that, T,” I said softly. “That’s immoral.”

My sister glared at me. “You can, and you will, sister. At least the sleeping part. I’ll take care of the rest if you don’t end up making a baby tonight.”

She sounded so sure of herself that I realized she would figure out a way to make it happen.

“Why?” I asked softly.

“Daddy wants this man’s support.” She shrugged. “I’m just following orders.”

I looked away.

There was no way. None. I just wouldn’t be able to do it.

My virginity had been the one and only thing I’d been able to keep.

So she and I would agree to disagree.

“I won’t do it,” I said firmly.

God help me and my brother.

My sister smiled. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

***

4 months later

“Listen, Theo,” my brother, Tyson, whispered. “You need to take this money and go.”

I looked down at the money and shook my head at his sweet gesture.

My brother had found out that I was pregnant, and he’d cashed out his 401K, his savings, and liquidated almost all of his assets just so I could have a fresh start. But…it wasn’t enough and we both knew it. That money would buy me a year at most. A year. And that wasn’t enough. Not nearly enough, unfortunately. Not when it came to my father. Tara. Andy.

Ugh, how I wish life was different.

But it wasn’t.

The life I led was a sad one. One that didn’t have a happy ending.

“It’s too late for that, Ty,” I whispered, palming my belly. “It’s too late for that.”

Tyson looked down at my belly and I could see the frustration clear on his face.

“A baby will just be another pawn to them,” he promised. “You’re going to see. This isn’t going to go the same way that you think it will. That you’re hoping it might. There’s no good inside of them. Only hate, destruction, and in Tara’s case, nothing. They’re going to hurt you, and your baby, and where will that leave you?”

He was right. I knew he was right.

Yet, I couldn’t let that happen.

If I left, it would mean safety for me and my baby—maybe. There was absolutely no guarantee that I could stay hidden. But what I knew for sure was that it would mean the death of my sister’s child. The death of my brother. Because there was no way that my father, Andy, my brother’s twin, and Tara, my twin, wouldn’t figure it out. Wouldn’t realize that Tyson had helped.

And there was also nothing in the world that would be able to stop her from using whatever she could to get me to come out of hiding, even threatening the life she carried.

There were only a handful of people that even knew where I was. And none of them would betray my father but one.

I knew it.

He knew it.

Yet he was offering me this chance, anyway.

“I’m not going to do that to you, Ty,” I told him bluntly. “Then neither one of us will be happy. At least this way, you can go about your business, live your life, and be somewhat happy.”

Tyson gave me a quelling look.

“You’re my baby sister.” His voice cracked. “I can’t leave you here like this. It’s time for you to be free, Theo. Free to live your life. Free for your baby to live his or her life.”
Well, technically speaking, maybe not. But the ones that haunt a man’s soul? Those are very real. So real, in fact, that there are times when Castiel would rather silence them forever in the worst way possible than to go on living with them haunting his every step.
All it took was one single second in time for his attention to drift, and everything changed. Life as he once knew it, is over.
Now he’s struggling to make sense of the pieces that are left, and he’s fairly sure at least half of them are missing. He’s living for three things now.
His club—the Bear Bottom Guardians. His work as a police officer for Bear Bottom Police Department. And the occasional glimpse of a girl that makes his spirit feel free.
Despite the ghosts that haunt him, he’s not willing to present them with another target. Which is why he has to stay away from her. He can’t touch her. He can’t talk to her. He can’t get anywhere near her.
Not and live with himself afterward. The only problem is, Turner doesn’t care what Castiel wants. She also has a solution for his ghosts.
You may call her Ms. Ghostbuster.

Turner

16 years old

“Look, it’s the fat fuck that likes to play like she can race cars,” I heard from my side.

I didn’t bother to look up.

In fact, I would’ve driven right back out onto the track had my fuel not been low and my father not been standing in the pit road giving me a look from hell.

Now his back was turned, and he was talking to a few of his pit crew, and I was wondering how in the hell I was going to get out of this car without hearing it double time from the asshole twins.

I swallowed hard, wondering if I could just sit here until they left.

But then my dad’s voice barked out, “Get out now, Turner Hooch. We’ve got places to be!”

I took the steering wheel off, placed it next to me, then started the painstaking process of getting out of the car—through the window—while others watched.

I didn’t miss the boys snickering at my side. I also didn’t miss the ‘look at that fat ass slide out of the car’ or the ‘do you think she needs to be greased?’

I felt a tear hit my eye as I swung my first leg out.

Then, before I could control it, I lost my footing on an oil slick next to the car window and fell the rest of the way out of the car.

I hit the ground with a bone-jarring thud and then stared up at the quickly dimming night sky as I tried to catch my breath.

My hair was laying in the oil next to me, and I was having a hard time deciding what I should do next.

Should I roll to my side and get up on my hands and knees before using the car to push up?

Or should I use the car to pull myself up from the position I was currently in?

My father saved me, however, by walking over and offering me his hand.

“You okay, baby girl?” he asked.

I took his hand and felt my six-foot-four, two-hundred-and-twenty-pound father haul me onto my feet.

But did he have to add the grunt of exertion at the end?

Yes, he probably did.

Which set the asshole twins off even more.

It was at this point that there was no denying that they were laughing at me.

Yet my father, being his clueless self, ignored them and kept his gaze on me.

“You okay?” he repeated.

“Sometimes, I don’t think she can get any fatter, and then she does,” I heard someone else say.

My head dropped.

“Let’s go, baby,” my father urged, guiding me away by placing his large arm around my shoulder and pulling me into his body.

We made it all the way out to the truck before he said, “Don’t listen to them, sweetheart.”

I scoffed.

“Yeah, like it’s that easy to do,” I muttered almost to myself.

He didn’t reply, only kept his arm around me until we were at his vehicle—the one that was given to him by his sponsor, Chevrolet—and guided me inside the vehicle before closing the door behind me.

I automatically reached for the seat belt and latched it into the lock, repositioning myself until the belt wasn’t digging so uncomfortably into my chest and belly.

We made it all the way home in silence, and by the time I arrived inside the house, I was about to break down all over again.

My dad had heard.

I was embarrassed.

So, so embarrassed.

Usually I kept all the problems I was having to myself.

If he’d known that there was a problem, he would’ve kicked the asshole twins out, and then I would’ve heard it even more while we were at school.

But this time there was no hiding the problems.

Nor the tears.

“Baby, wait,” my father said before I could head in the direction of my room.

I stopped in the mouth of the kitchen, then turned and stared at the man that knew how to mend my heart. The only man that had ever been good to me.

“What?” I asked.

“What they said? Don’t take it to heart,” he tried.

I heard the distinctive shuffle of my mother entering the room and turned to find her staring at us with wariness on her face.

I turned back to my dad.

“You don’t understand,” I whispered, eyes filling with tears. “You’re not fat. You don’t know what it’s like!”

My mother made a sound in her throat, and I looked over at her to see that she was staring at the ground.

My mother, Patty, did know what it was like.

She’d always been a big-boned woman and had gained a lot of weight over the last ten years.

Hell, she and I sometimes even shared clothes at this point.

I was not happy with my body.

I was not happy with the way that I couldn’t seem to control it even with diet and exercise.

Where some people accused me of not trying, I had to point out that I did try. A lot.
Wrong.
Eitan and Annmarie die in a freak accident that never should have happened, leaving the two survivors reeling. Sixteen years later, Jubilee and Zee can’t even be in the same room with each other before things begin to deteriorate. Too many memories. Too much pain. Not enough forgiveness.
They’re like hellfire and holy water, and neither one of them is willing to admit that they’re wrong. Then one day things change, and all of a sudden, they’re looking at each other like maybe they aren’t each other’s enemies after all.
Zee

Age 9

“Give it back!” I screamed at the little girl.

The little devil known as Jubilee waved the hat like it was a red flag, and like the bull that I was acting like, I started to charge.

She squeaked in surprise when she realized her danger and started to run.

Unfortunately, when she did, she tripped.

The hat went one way, and her body went the other.

Later I would be told that Jubilee was lucky that she didn’t fall into the fire like my hat did.

Now? Well now all I saw was my favorite ball cap burning up and a six-year-old girl on the ground laughing to blame for it.

***

Jubilee

Age 9

“Give me that back!” I yelled, mad because, once again, Ezekiel had stolen my candy and then shoved it down his throat because he thought I wouldn’t want it back.

Joke was on him, though.

I did.

And I’d get it back no matter what I had to do.

“You snooze, you lose, Wednesday!” Ezekiel yelled, laughing his butt off over whatever he found so funny about this situation.

I hated. HATED. When he called me Wednesday, after Wednesday Addams off The Addams Family. The girl that looked like a goth when she wasn’t. I wasn’t goth! I was just pale and dark-haired! So I liked black. Whatever!

He was wrong about something else, too. There was nothing funny about this situation. It was tragic.

Who ate a person’s M&Ms when they were literally in their hands? It wasn’t like I had left them unattended.

“Give them back, Zee,” Eitan ordered, looking angry on my behalf.

Really, he was tired of listening to me and his brother fight, just like my own sister was. Which was why Annmarie was in the other room, just like she always was when Eitan and Ezekiel McGrew came over.

“Sorry,” Zee said as he poured the rest of my M&Ms down his throat.

That’s when I tackled him, then started punching and kicking him with my fists of fury until our parents separated us an entire minute later.

“Getting slow on the uptake, kid,” Gordon McGrew, Zee’s father, said.

Zee glared at his dad, then at me.

“She took me by surprise,” Zee lied.

“Gordon, Ezekiel ate my M&Ms. Can you tell him to give me his candy for repayment?” I batted my eyes at Zee’s dad.

Gordon turned his eyes to Zee.

“That right, boy?” Gordon asked.

Zee shrugged. “She wasn’t eating them.”

Liar.

“Then you get to either give her your candy or pay her back. Your choice.”

Five minutes later, I took every second to relish the taste of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups that used to belong to Zee, making sure to moan and groan out my pleasure with each bite.

“So good,” I groaned.

Zee threw the TV remote at my face, and I ducked it.

“Still so good.”

“Die.”

***

Age 13

“Leave her alone, bro,” Eitan said. “She’s going to fucking kill you.”

“She’s not going to do a thing to me because she wants to be out just as much as I do,” Zee said. “And if she goes whining to Daddy, they’re going to know that we snuck out to go to the movies, then she’ll get into trouble.”

I clenched my fists so tightly that the blood left them.

“Come on, Wednesday,” Zee teased. “Take a drink. It’s not going to kill you.”

I pushed the bottle away.

Again.

“I’m not drinking that,” I said. “A, I don’t want a drink. B, you’ve slobbered all over it and I’m not touching anything that’s been anywhere near your mouth.”

“Your sister’s mouth has been near mine, and I saw you hug her the other day,” Zee teased.

I glanced up at the ceiling.

“I really do hate you.”

Eitan pulled me into his arms, and I had to fight the urge to pull away.

Despite Eitan being the sweeter of the two brothers, and also being my boyfriend, I had a hard time hanging out with him when he was near his brother. Because he acted like a completely different person when he was around.

“Whatever, Wednesday.” Zee took a swig and handed the bottle to Annmarie, who took a drink of her own and passed it to Eitan, who followed suit.

My stomach twisted.

But I didn’t break.

I wouldn’t.

Somebody needed to be sober.

And I was only thirteen after all, even if being around these three made me feel like I was much older.

***

Age 15

My feet dragged as I walked down the aisle toward the coffin.

My sister was there, in that wooden box, with the lid closed.

Dead.

That had been at my father’s request. The closed casket.

I’d tried to get him to leave it open, but he hadn’t allowed it.

I looked down at my arm, noticing the spider web of scarring that hadn’t killed me but had killed my twin sister, Annmarie, and Eitan, my boyfriend.

You want to know who else it hadn’t killed? Eitan’s twin brother, Ezekiel.
Benson Bayou Beauregard is the president of the Bear Bottom Guardians MC, and the grandson of the Sergeant at Arms for the Dixie Wardens MC. He’s a mountain of a man and the warden of a prison, and there’s only one thing that can scare him—being told that he’s the father of a three-year-old little girl.
A three-year-old little girl that has no clue who he is. Hell, he only finds out about the little cherub when a woman from child protective services comes by and rocks his world before leaving the girl in his shocked arms.
Every single thing he thinks he knows goes up in a cloud of smoke. To make matters worse, the woman that he’s been trying to convince to give him a chance takes one look at the little girl and tells him that he’s just not in the right place to handle both of them.
But Bayou was never one to back down from a challenge. He can handle a three-year-old girl that acts exactly like him, and he can more than take on the fiery red-head that sets flame to his blood while he’s at it.

Phoebe

Phoebe, Age 15

My feet dragged as I walked to my doom.

It wasn’t anything bad—at least not to most people. To me, though? Yeah, I’d rather be at home reading a book, or possibly at the lake fishing. Hell, I’d even take camping over this—a club party. A motorcycle club party.

It wasn’t anything wild. Just a thing with friends and family.

See, my grandfather was the president of the Dixie Wardens MC, Benton, Louisiana chapter. My father, Sam Mackenzie, had dragged me here.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see my grandfather—because I did. It was because I didn’t like parties. I didn’t like big crowds, and I most definitely didn’t like the loud crap they considered music.

It was inevitable.

I’d be leaving the party tonight with a headache.

Then again, my mother had graced our entire family with the ability to get a headache at a moment’s notice. Honestly, it was more routine for me to have a headache at this point than to not have one.

My sisters, Piper and Pru, who were twins, easily disappeared into the crowd and started making the rounds, greeting family and friends.

I, on the other hand, wound my way around the outskirts of the party until I found my grandfather.

I would say hi, I would find a quiet spot, and then I’d pull out my Kindle and read while hoping nobody bothered me.

I found my grandfather at the far end of the large, open structure. The building we were in tonight used to be an airplane hangar, so there was more than enough room for the hundreds of people that were milling about, laughing and carrying on.

Some of those people had drinks in their hands while others had their arms wrapped around their loved ones.

I kept my eyes down, not meeting anyone’s gaze hoping that if I kept eye contact to a minimum, nobody would stop me.

I was right, it worked.

I arrived at my grandfather’s side just in time to hear him say to the man standing on the other side of him, “How’s Benson doing?”

Dixie, the man that he was talking to, was one of the oldest members of the MC and had about thirty grandchildren at this point.

“He’s definitely not happy that he was forced to come,” Dixie muttered, his eyes going somewhere into the darkness.

I followed his gaze but didn’t see anything—or anyone—anywhere.

“Maybe y’all should stop forcing us introverts to come,” I suggested, walking up to my grandfather and wrapping my arms around his waist.

He wrapped me up tight and gave me a good squeeze before loosening his hold.

“Hey, girl,” my grandfather said. “Happy birthday.”

I smiled. “Usually when it’s one’s birthday, they get to do what they want. They’re not forced to come to a party.”

“Your father knew I wanted to see you,” he said, his eyes lit with humor. He knew just as well as I did how much I hated crowds. “And I wanted to give you a birthday present.”

He pulled a box out of his back pocket, and I looked at it suspiciously.

“What is it?” I asked, making no move to take it.

“Jesus, she’s harder to give presents to than Benson,” Dixie muttered, sounding amused. “I tried to give him a bike today and he told me to shove it up my ass.”

I blinked.

“Umm,” I hesitated. “That was…sweet of him.”

Dixie burst out laughing. “He was mad because I paid off the rest of the loan. He wanted to pay it off on his own. I wanted him to have a goddamn bike that didn’t break down halfway to work every day.”

“Didn’t his mother try to do that, and he refused to drive it until he could pay off the loan himself?” my grandfather, Silas, asked.

“Yes,” Dixie muttered. “But I figured if I told him it was a gift for his birthday, he’d be willing to take the bike. Let’s just say that he wasn’t.”

“He’s a proud kid,” Pops muttered. “You should’ve known that he wasn’t going to take that.”

“Maybe,” Dixie admitted. “But Jesus Christ, it’s hard watching that boy struggle. He’s going to school full-time and he’s working full-time. All the while he’s making it on his own, but only by the skin of his teeth.”

I felt like I was missing part of the story, and I wanted to know more.

It wasn’t every day that someone turned down a motorcycle because he was wanting to do it all on his own.

Hell, I hadn’t turned down the free vehicle my parents had given me.

Granted, it was my mother’s old truck, and it was twice as old as I was, but it was still in perfect condition and would suit my purposes perfectly. That, and it was my dream vehicle.

“Kid’s hell-bent to make it on his own. There’s nothing wrong with that, Dixie,” Pops told him. “Not everyone can be perfect like my Phoebe.”
One, he’s not relationship material. Two, the nurse that treats him for erectile dysfunction is the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen, and practically has ‘the marrying type’ stamped on her forehead.
Does that stop him from wanting her? No.
Unfortunately, he learned a long time ago that Army Delta Force and long-lasting relationships don’t go hand in hand.
But beautiful hazel eyes, curly blonde hair, and the prettiest lips he’s ever seen play havoc with his resolve, making him forget his earlier convictions.
All it takes is one teeny, tiny kiss for every shred of control he has to disappear, along with the problem in his pants.
Soon he finds himself doing things that he knows that he shouldn’t. He doesn’t know that he’s found the woman that’s meant to be his. Nor does he realize that her father is the man he’s idolized from the moment he joined the army at the age of eighteen. Because, maybe if he had, he would’ve tried a little harder to ignore the pull he felt between them instead of making her his the night before he deployed for six months.
He also might’ve tried a little harder not to knock her up.

Chapter 1

Don’t judge someone just because they sin differently than you do.

-Life lesson

Hoax

Either my dick was broken, or I was about to die. Those were the only two possible explanations.

I wasn’t actually a hundred percent sure why I had decided to come to the hospital for my current predicament, but something had to give. Something in the form of my erection—or my lack thereof.

I’d been lying in bed for hours tonight, trying to think about something that would make my dick get hard, but nothing worked.

Not my usual buxom brunette with tits so big that they slapped her in her face when I fucked her hard. Nor the small Asian chick that had nipples so tight that I wanted nothing more than to suck them into my mouth and hold on tight with my teeth while I went to town.

Hell, even my oldest daydream—the one of Mrs. Oliver from ninth grade science class—didn’t even do the trick anymore, and I’d been using that particular one for years.

Before I could think, I’d gotten on my bike and ridden to the hospital. Then, before I could get embarrassed that I, a thirty-two-year-old man who was in the prime of his life, couldn’t get it up, I marched straight into the ER—emergency room—and stopped.

I shouldn’t be there. Technically, I wasn’t actually experiencing an emergency.

I’d never hear the end of it, either. Not from my family and not from my friends. It was probably best that nobody saw me.

Though, technically, the one single nurse that I knew that worked in the ER, Conleigh, had assured me that what happened in the ER stayed in the ER. And not because they had some weird pact kind of like fight club where you didn’t talk about your patients. No, because there were laws that required them not to.

Which, I supposed, wasn’t really going to keep them from talking about me. It just meant they couldn’t talk about me to other people—not amongst themselves.

Honestly, I was about to turn around and leave when I saw her.

She wasn’t very tall. A little over five foot three or four, she was a good foot shorter than me. She was wearing navy blue scrubs that fit her body like a glove.

Since when did hospital scrubs become so fitted?

But goddamn. The scrubs she was wearing hugged her supple ass, belly, and thighs. And those tits…yeah, they would fit perfectly in the palm of my hand.

She took my breath away.

Oh, and made my dick hard.

She’d cured me, and what better way to thank her than to give her a very thorough thank you present. One that involved my tongue, cock, and fingers.

Chapter 2

This message is invisible. Only people that masturbate can see it.

Pru

I scratched my head and nearly groaned when I found the pen that I’d been searching in every drawer and counter for the last three and a half minutes. Three and a half minutes that I should’ve been using to pee and shove some food in my mouth instead of looking for a pen.

But, it was a special pen. I’d gotten it from a patient two weeks ago that had been all of six years old, and informed me that the pen was special and boys liked it.

Pulling it out, I stared at the mermaid pen with its glittery, shiny gold, teal, and purple scales, and felt myself smiling.

“Anyway,” I sighed, tucking the pen into the palm of my hand and curling my fingers around it. “If you want to go ahead and take that potty break, go ahead. I’ll wait here and take over until you get back.”

The paramedic that ran the triage desk looked at me with gratefulness. “Thanks, Pru. You’re the best.”

Then, before either one of us could argue, or I could rescind my offer, she bolted for the breakroom.

I, on the other hand, bounced on the balls of my feet as I tried to think about anything but the fullness of my bladder.

A throat cleared behind me, and I turned, coming face to face with a broad chest.

I blinked and stepped back.

“Is this where I would need to go to get seen?” a deep, rough voice, belonging to that chest, rumbled.

I took another step back, completely forgetting about my full bladder, and stared at the chest in surprise before allowing my eyes to travel up.

“Ma’am?”

I didn’t respond to his words. Instead, I took every delicious inch of the man in. Starting with his chest, which was covered with a black Van Halen t-shirt, I moved my way up to the breadth of his shoulders. Very wide shoulders that looked like they could support a lot of weight—possibly my ankles—for hours.

Then I moved from those beautiful shoulders to his strong, muscular neck. I stopped at the bearded jaw. A bearded, square jaw that screamed for me to run my fingers over it.
Wade had everything he could ever want in life…then he lost it. Now, his life—his forever girl—is living in a house he built for her while he’s struggling to move on and find meaning where there isn’t any to be found.
Landry Hill was his girl. His everything. His first kiss. His first and only love. His old lady and wife. Then one day he does something monumentally stupid, and she walks away knowing she’ll never come back.
Fast forward two years, and he’s still just as in love with her now as he was when she left. The only problem is that she’s moved on with her life, found a new man, and has seemingly forgotten him. Then there’s Wade—stuck in the same awful place where she abandoned him. The only thing he has left is his job as a police officer and the Bear Bottom MC.
Just when they both think things can’t get any worse, life kicks them both in the teeth, and Landry finds out really quick that the only person she can depend on is the one that let her walk away.
With that understanding comes a deal. One that Landry has no hope of ever breaking free from, and one Wade will do everything in his power to make a reality.
But one thing is still certain. The force that split them apart is still out there, and there’s no hope of escaping fate.

Landry

5 years old

The needle hurt. The nice nurse said that it would, but she didn’t have to tell me that it would. I already knew.

“When you wake up, you’ll feel a little sore,” the nice nurse lied.

I closed my eyes and tried not to cry.

My mommy and daddy didn’t like it when I cried.

***

7 years old

“Hi there, Landry. Are you in any pain?” the nurse asked.

I nodded as I thought that I didn’t know her name.

What was the point?

“Okay, I’ll get you something.” The nurse bustled out, and I took a quick glance around the room. My mommy and daddy weren’t there.

They were likely two floors away with Lina.

They were always with Lina.

I shifted before I thought about it, and pain shot through my hips and a short gasp fell free of my lips.

I didn’t cry, though. Crying never got me anywhere.

***

12 years old

“But, Mom! I don’t want to do another one!” I cried out.

I didn’t know why I was arguing. Hell, it never got me anywhere.

But God, I was just so tired.

I couldn’t be a kid. I couldn’t have fun. I couldn’t go anywhere. Couldn’t do anything.

I wanted cake! I wanted to go outside and play. I wanted to go to a bookstore and chance getting sick! I wanted a life!

“You don’t get a choice in this, Landry Marine. You get to do what you’re told because I’m the one who puts a roof over your head and food in your mouth,” my father practically snarled.

I felt the anger burn in my throat, but what he said was true. He did pay for those things.

Though, I would gladly give up those two things if I was able to live the life I wanted to live.

My life—from the moment I was conceived in a test tube and implanted into the body of a woman who wasn’t even my mother—had been for someone else’s benefit.

It sure the heck wasn’t mine.

I was created for the sole purpose of offering their daughter—the wonderful Lina—a chance at life.

Me? Well, the only reason they wanted me healthy was because if I wasn’t healthy, I couldn’t donate bone marrow to Lina when it was needed.

And it had been needed—many times.

But, lucky for everyone but me, Lina got better every time.

The only problem was that she would only get sick again six to twelve months later.

I was, of course, the last resort.

But, that didn’t mean that I got to live my life in between those times when my sister wasn’t considered sick.

Nope, not me.

I got to eat broccoli and asparagus. I only got fruits that weren’t high in carbs.

White bread was a no-go, and I only ate the healthiest meals—lean chicken, whole grain rice.

I had my first and only bite of cake at a birthday party I was invited to, but my mother had slapped it out of my hand before I could get a second bite in.

That one had gotten me grounded for two months.

Not that it mattered.

I didn’t have a life outside of my home anyway.

I was the most boring, in shape twelve-year-old on the planet.

My parents made sure of it.

***

15 years old

Everything hurt.

But there would be no pain medicine for me, though, on the off chance that I became addicted to it.

Those were my mother’s words, not mine.

She watched over me like a hawk, and there was no way in hell that I’d ever get addicted to anything when she chose each and every thing that went into my mouth.

“Landry,” my mother chided when I walked into the living room and immediately put my ass on the couch. “Go to your room. We don’t want to listen to the television right now.”

I looked around the room at my parents who’d walked in behind me.

Not that they’d be staying.

My mother would go to her solarium while my father went to his office.

There they’d spend the next couple hours working and or entertaining.

“Would you mind dropping this off in Lina’s room on your way? She called and asked for a Happy Meal from McDonald’s when you were in surgery.”

I swallowed my anger and stood up, even though it hurt so bad that I could barely breathe.

Each time I donated, it only seemed to get worse and the recovery stretched out longer.

The pain lasted for weeks on top of weeks instead of the short intervals that I’d had in the beginning.

I was so young the first time that I underwent this procedure that I don’t remember the recovery—I just remembered pain.

And that didn’t even begin to factor in the depression that took me down for even longer.

“Sure,” I croaked, grabbing the Happy Meal off the counter. “Are you sure I won’t get germs on it?”

“Would you mind spraying the box down with Lysol, washing your hands, and then putting it out on a clean plate?” my father asked as he passed on his way to his office.
She’s everything that he wants, wrapped up in a cute little package that is stamped ‘hands freakin’ off.’ She’s four years younger than him, in school to be a doctor, and thinks football is stupid.
But all it takes is hearing that she’s in trouble for Linc to drop every single thing—football and MC duties alike—and head to her side.

Conleigh

I watched with my heart in my throat as the ball was released from Lincoln James’, star quarterback of the Longview Liners, hand.

The ball went into a flawless spiral, the absolute most perfect pass there ever was, only to stop short when the man who was supposed to catch it was slammed to the ground seconds before it hit his hands.

Everyone everywhere who loved the Longview Liners like I did collectively groaned.

“Noooo!” I cried out, pissed off and outraged that the man didn’t catch the ball. “How could you do that?”

Then the buzzer sounded, and the season was over, just like that.

I prayed that they’d pan over to Linc so I could see him, make sure that he was all right, but the stupid cameraman panned to the coach, who looked mad as hell. Then to the little pissant who they called Joe Blow, but was really named Joe Hoyt, who looked even epically pissed off that he was tackled.

I immediately felt horrible for calling him a pissant, because he really was a great guy. And catching that ball really was impossible, especially with half of their team hurt and Joe the only logical choice to throw to since he’d been the only one to make actual plays tonight instead of fumble the damn ball.

I watched with avid fascination as the world went on around them, waiting for a glimpse or two of Linc.

However, none ever came, and I only realized when they were filming post-game interviews that Linc had straight up gone to the locker room and avoided all contact with everyone.

Not that I blamed him.

Linc was always a sore loser, and he’d told me before that he was forced to put on a happy face and play nice when he least wanted to.

My phone chimed on the chair beside me, and I smiled when I saw my mom’s name on the screen.

She’d put a sad face with huge fat tears on it, and I knew that she and my stepfather, Steel, had been watching the game just as closely as I had been.

A couple of years ago, my mother wouldn’t be caught dead watching a football game—they reminded her too much of my former stepfather—but now, she’d cuddle on the couch with her big, bad biker president and stay there for hours watching a game with him.

Me? I’d always loved the game of football. I loved it even more now that I got to watch Linc’s tight ass running around on the field. Though, he thought I hated it, and I allowed him to think I hated it because me and Linc had a weird relationship.

Another text came in while I was replying with my own sad smiley face to my mother, and my heart started to pound.

Other things in my body started to act weird, too.

Like my vagina.

That thing was always betraying me.

Especially when it came to Linc James, my one-time not-so-much boyfriend.

I say ‘one-time’ loosely, though. At one point, we’d discussed being more than friends, but then he’d gotten too big for his britches, so to speak, and had forgotten all about little old me.

Sure, he still texted every now and then, like right now, but it wasn’t like how it used to be when we’d talk every single night.

I always made it a point to reply to him.

Always.

But I was never overly friendly.

I had to protect my heart, because I’d had it broken by one too many men over my life—my father, my first stepfather, and then finally, Linc.

It couldn’t handle being broken again, especially a second time by Linc James, professional football player, and owner of many hearts—including my own.

Linc: You up?

I swallowed past the lump in my throat and replied.

Conleigh: Yep. Lots of homework to do. I’m not sure this master’s degree thing is for me.

I really was thinking that. The more that I studied, and the more I got away from the actual nursing part of nursing, the more I realized that maybe I’d made the wrong decision.

Originally my goal had been to become a doctor, but that would take way too long for me to accomplish, and on top of that, the required schooling was so intense that you couldn’t really work or do anything else while in school. In the end, I’d changed my major to nurse practitioner with a plan to possibly explore the option of becoming a doctor once I had established myself financially.

A long time ago, my mother, brother, and I had been poor. And when I say poor, I meant the kind of poor where eating ramen noodles once a week was a treat, and I was stealing shoes from the store for my baby brother. That kind of poor.

My mother wasn’t the one to do that, though.
When Rome Pierce moved to Bear Bottom, Texas, it was his intention to lay low. To not be seen. To find a way to heal his body and soul—as well as his son’s.
Nobody would know by looking at him that he used to play professional football. Not with the Bear Bottom MC cut covering his back, and definitely not with his friendly smile completely obliterated.
No longer is there charm in each smooth word that comes out of his mouth. What’s left is an angry, bitter, scared man that’s terrified one day he’s going to wake up and his entire world is going to be gone.
Nobody knows what drove him to leave the game he loved—nobody but her. She’s the one person that has helped him make it through the dark days and even darker nights. She’s the bright and shining star in his pitch-black sky.
And he doesn’t even know her name. He should be afraid that she knows things that not anyone—not even his best friend—knows.
Yet, with each encounter, he gives what little bit of his soul remains, and before he knows it only two people on this earth—one dying, and one too afraid to live—make his life worth living.
Until one day he has to choose—the love of his life, or the life he brought into this world. Two impossible situations. One decision that would change him forever.
-Rome’s secret thoughts

Rome

RP’s Biggest Fan,

I’m not sure how you became my therapist, or how we even got to the point of being pen pals, but I’ll take what I can get.

I could use a friend.

So, you want to hear about my life? How it’s nowhere near as glamorous as everyone makes it out to be?

Where should I start?

How about the paparazzi. They’re awful. They follow me home. They follow me to work. They follow me to my son’s appointments—though technically, they don’t know he’s my son. Luckily. That was one thing I did manage to do right—keeping him out of the limelight.

Lucky for me, too. Or, at least for him.

And if the paparazzi wasn’t bad enough, my ex was only with me for my money—because she knew that I had it.

If there was one thing I could erase from my life, it would be her.

But, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have my son…and at this point, he’s the single bright light in the sea of darkness that is my life.

Last week she threatened to sue me because I broke the custody agreement we have for our son. Do you want to know what I did? Nothing. Not one damn thing. I stayed at her house while she went away for the day, and I put a drink on her coffee table.

Let me repeat that…I put a drink on her coffee table.

Ok, so it was a Coke can, and I didn’t use a coaster… but I’d finished the damn thing. It was completely empty, it wasn’t sweating, and it didn’t leave any sort of mark.

But, with the way she reacted, you would’ve thought that I’d carved my initials in the table using a screwdriver or something.

Oh, and let’s not forget what my team manager wants me to do.

He wants me to pose naked except for a strategically positioned football for Sports Illustrated. When did Sports Illustrated stop focusing on sports in favor of selling what’s sexy?

You told me last week that you weren’t sure that you were going to write anymore. I realize that this back and forth we have going on isn’t normal, but if it doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t bother me.

I hope you write to me soon, RP’s Biggest Fan.
Rome.

Part 1

Chapter 1

I do all my ironing in the dryer.

-Rome’s secret thoughts

Rome

“I can’t do this anymore, Rome.” Tara’s sad eyes met mine. “It hurts too much to watch him suffer. I…I have to go.” She transferred my sleeping son into my arms as she spoke.

I looked at my baby mama, the woman that I was never really in love with but had given me my son. The same woman who had literally taken everything I’d ever loved away from me.

First and foremost, she had been the reason I lost my best friend, Tyler.

“What about Matias?” I asked, trying to think of something, anything, else but Tyler. “What am I going to tell him when he wakes up?”

She squared her shoulders and then shot me what was her best attempt at a pain-filled expression.

“I don’t know,” she admitted. “But what I do know is that I can’t watch my baby die. I just can’t.”

Then she pulled her suitcase into the entry and turned around, going through the door, never once looking back.

I knew what she was saying was a lie. That whole scene was nothing but a big, fat lie.

The only reason she stayed with Matias as long as she had was because doing so gave her access to me—and my wallet. I’d been a professional football player when we met, but after I announced my retirement at the end of last season, Tara changed.

Then I went and joined a motorcycle club, and well…that, as one would say, was all she wrote.

She thought she’d signed up for a life of fat paychecks, the notoriety of being a professional football player’s wife, and everything else that came with that life. What she did not sign up for was a sick kid, a washed-up football player, and a man who was slowly losing everything he’d been given.

The one thing that had saved me was my motorcycle club—the Bear Bottom Guardians.

Bear Bottom, Texas was a small town between Longview and Kilgore, right in the middle of nowhere—at least at first. The town was founded by the MC and growing a hell of a lot faster than anyone ever imagined it would.

The population had started small—a mere few hundred souls—and had grown to almost twenty times that—and almost all of them had been bikers, their old ladies, and their families.

Bear Bottom Guardians had been just an idea at first, but slowly over the course of the years since the club had been formed, it’d turned into something much more. A place to be without having to worry about who you were.
