I take off my jacket and start beating the flames with it. I can handle getting burned. I’ve never minded pain. And about the scars…

What does it matter anyway? I’m fifty-four and I still haven’t found my mate. At this point, I don’t think she’s ever coming so I might as well get some scars if it means saving this nice family’s house.

My inner polar bear roars as we feel the heat. Sweat breaks out all over my skin as the hairs on my arm turn to ash. I’m hitting the flaming carpet with my jacket, trying desperately to fight the flames back, but they’re growing everywhere.

We got a call about a chimney fire in a house and we rushed over. It’s not just the chimney. The whole damn living room is on fire and if I don’t move fast, the whole place will be engulfed in flames soon. And those sweet people outside with the crying kids will be stuck in a hotel for months.

“It’s too much,” Ethan says as he coughs from the thick smoke. “It’s going to take the hose for this one.”

I know what’s going to happen if we start unloading water in here. The whole house will be ruined. If I can just get it under control, then they’ll only have to renovate one room rather than restart from scratch.

“Go set it up,” I say as my throat burns and my eyes water. “Wait until my word before you open the pipe.”

Ethan nods and then rushes out. Carter and Rylan are outside and Westin is back at the station. It’s just me against the fire now.

I can’t get the image of that poor lady outside in the snow with her two kids out of my mind. Seeing her husband’s arm around her shoulders as she cried really got to me. I know he would do this for his girl if he could, so I’m going to do it for him.

I wish I had someone like that to fight for. A mate to die for.

I’m coughing and hacking away as I beat back the flames. I put out the fire on the carpet and kick in a couple of walls to find the flames hiding behind.

Ethan comes back in with a fire hydrant and tosses it to me. I catch it and let it rip, pouring it in the walls, then up the chimney. I open the window to let the smoke escape and get some of that fresh winter air in. I stick my head out and take a deep breath of the chilly mountain air. It feels like ice in my searing lungs. It feels so good.

But nothing feels as good as seeing the reactions on the family’s faces when I walk back outside a few minutes later and they realize their house is going to be okay.

“Thank you so much,” the man says as he gives me an unexpected hug. “What can I do to repay you?”

“Take good care of that family of yours,” I say as I slap his back. Because not all of us are as lucky to have a family to take care of.

We fix up the house as best we can and then make sure the family is safe in a hotel for the night. Everything they have is going to smell like smoke for a while, but at least it’s intact.

There are burnt holes all over my t-shirt so I just take it off and toss it in the garbage when we get back to the station.

It’s late, but Mila is there to greet us. She runs over to her mate Rylan and jumps on him, kissing his face as she wraps her arms around his back. I look away.

I’m happy for them, but I can’t. It’s just too hard.

“I was hoping I was going to get to see you,” Mila says after they kiss. She’s a doctor and always working weird hours. “Are you almost finished?”

I feel Rylan looking at me. He doesn’t want to ask, but I can feel the question burning into me.

“Go,” I say without looking at them. “Have fun.”

Mila squeals in delight and they race off into the night to do whatever mates do.

I look at my arms, trying to focus on the burnt hairs and not on the jealousy that’s burning through me. That jealousy is a killer. Believe me, I know.

I’ve had to watch with a smile on my face as all four of these guys found their mates. All of them are younger. Carter didn’t even want a fucking mate for Christ’s sakes and he got one.

I’ve been waiting for five decades for my girl to come into my life. For my heart to be complete. To be whole.

“Bye, lover,” Kimberly says as she climbs onto the truck and gives her mate Westin a kiss. I have to turn away.

I’m happy for Westin but it’s hard to see all the happy couples around here when I’m pinning for my mate. Every kiss, every holding of hands, every look, and every smile—each one is like a knife through my heart that twists and twists and twists.

“You’re not allowed on the truck,” I snap at her when the kiss goes on longer than I can handle.

Kimberly pulls away and looks at me funny. “I was just saying goodbye.”

I know I should just shut up. Let them enjoy their love. Not be a total dick. But I can’t.

It’s been torture around here with all of the mates showing up. First Ethan and Chloe, then it was Carter and Aubrey, and now Westin and Kimberly. I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do if Blake finds his mate before me.

I’ve been feeling lonelier than ever and it’s starting to make me miserable. I hate that I’m like this, but the pain has to come out somehow.

“The alarm is going,” I tell her. “That means there’s an active fire. That means we’re technically in the field. That means no kissing.”

It’s an asshole move, but I just can’t handle watching anymore mate-love. I’m spared from having to deal with it when we’re on a job. It’s the only time I can get some peace.

Blake comes charging into the fire hall and leaps into the truck. Carter is behind the wheel and takes off before our fire chief Blake can even close the door.

I glance out the window at Kimberly and she gives me the finger.

She looks annoyed and I feel bad. I like Kimberly, I really do, but I just can’t handle seeing her and Westin so happy this morning.

My inner grizzly bear has been extra agitated lately. I was up again all last night with him pacing around and acting all grumpy. He wants our mate here by our side with our mark on her neck and with my cock buried between her legs.

I want the same thing as well, but it’s not in my control. I try to tell him that, but the furry fucker can’t get it through his thick skull. So, he drives me crazy instead.

“What the hell was that, Rylan?” Westin asks as his eyes narrow on me. We’re sitting in the back with Ethan. Carter is driving and Blake is beside him up front. “I can’t give my mate a kiss before we head out on a job?”

I grit my teeth as I stare out the window. The fall is here and the leaves are starting to change colors. It’s gorgeous in Montana during these colorful weeks but all I’m seeing is death and decay. The leaves aren’t changing colors. They’re dying. The selfish tree is sucking the nutrients back and the leaves are shriveling up and suffering a slow painful death.

Westin kicks my boot. “I’m talking to you, asshole.”

My eyes dart over to his. “The alarm was on.”

“So?”

“So, it’s protocol. We have to stay focused on the task at hand.”

“Waiting for Blake to get out of the bathroom?”

Blake turns around with the mention of his name. “What happened?”

Ethan chuckles beside me. “Kimberly was giving Westin a kiss goodbye, but Rylan didn’t like it.”

“He should be focused on the job,” I say with a little too much force in my voice. Really, I should just shut up. “And not on his mate’s tonsils.”

“Fuck you, man,” Westin snaps. I think I might have gone too far. “I’m always focused on every job. It’s not like we’re headed to a five-alarm fire. It’s a car accident.”

“Whatever,” I mutter as I turn back to the window. I should have just kept my mouth shut.

My bear starts grumbling inside me as we pull onto the two-lane expressway. Carter is speeding with the alarm blaring and we get there in no time.

Shit. It’s a big nothing burger.

I was hoping for an intense fire, a radioactive spill, anything to get my blood pumping and my mind focused on something other than the fact that my mate is not in my life and may not be for another few decades.

But instead, I got this. A motorcyclist skidded off the road. His bike is flipped over in the dirt and he’s sitting on the side of the two-lane expressway with a few people around him. Traffic is a mess. There are four cars parked on the shoulder and everyone keeps slowing down in both directions to see what happened.

“Rylan,” Blake shouts as we all pour out of the truck. “You can take traffic duty. Maybe that will calm you down.”
There’s something strange about this small Montana town. The men are huge, rough, and growly.
There’s also an abnormally large amount of Alphas among them. But there’s one Alpha who stands above them all.
Westin Wood. Firefighter. Grizzly bear shifter. Muscular god. He can have any girl he wants and for some reason, he’s chosen the curvy sarcastic waitress down at the local diner……me.
He’s very vocal about what he wants and I’m not talking about him ordering off the menu.
He wants me. Claimed and marked. For a customer he’s a tad possessive. And protective. And downright wild. Luckily for me, my shift finishes in ten minutes…
Ready for an alpha who can handle the heat and likes his girl with some meat? Westin is a dominant Over-The-Top grizzly bear shifter who will have you howling for more. This is the third book in the Alphas In Heat series featuring the bear shifters from the Blackcloud Point fire station. Fire-fighting bear shifters? Yes, please!
The books can be read in any order. This fireman romance shifter book is SAFE, with no cheating, and a furry HEA guaranteed. Enjoy!

Shit.

Come on, Kimberly. Be nice. You want to keep your job or sleep in the bus station tonight?

I put on my best fake smile and walk over as I smooth out my waitressing apron.

He shoves the bill in my face.

“What does that say?”

“Carl’s Diner.”

“Not there! Here!”

“That says one cup of coffee. Which you ordered. And drank.”

It’s getting hard to keep my fake smile plastered on my face.

“And look how much it is. Three dollars. Three! Is this some kind of special gourmet blend or something?”

“Yes,” I say as I tilt my head and deepen my smile. “Our coffee is made from a special, very rare coffee bean only found in the Himalayan mountains. Each bean is lovingly handpicked by blonde Swedish virgins who store them in their virginal trousers. Then, the beans are shipped to Vatican City where each one is blessed individually by the Pope.”

“Oh, really?” he says sarcastically.

“Yes,” I continue with a straight face. “Once they’re blessed, they’re flown in a private luxury jet to the rainforests of Borneo where endangered baby pandas grind them to the perfect consistency with their little baby teeth. They’re then brought here and filtered by glacial waters from lake Titicaca, the highest altitude freshwater lake in the world. You see the altitude gives the water the perfect amount of acidity for brewing a flawless cup of coffee. That’s why it’s three dollars. The diner actually loses thirty-six thousand dollars for each cup we sell, but Carl is such a coffee connoisseur that he takes the hit for your drinking pleasure. I hope you agree that at only three dollars a cup, it’s a wonderful deal.”

He’s just staring at me like I’ve peeled the skin off my face and shown that I’m a robot underneath.

“You are incredibly weird.”

“Thank you, sir. You have a lovely day.”

He throws down his money, leaving me a ten-cent tip (cheap bastard) and then hurries out the door.

“Kimberly,” Carl warns from behind the counter. “Are you scaring the customers again?”

I turn around with a shrug and a smile. “Not at all. He was just saying how wonderful a waitress I am.”

He’s not buying it. “Mm-hmm,” he grumbles as he returns to the back with a frown on his face.

I sigh as I clean the table, wondering what I’m doing here.

There’s a cute guy at the table next to me who heard the whole thing.

“That was really clever,” he says. “Did you make that up on the spot?”

I shake my head. “Every word is true. Except for the virgin part. Those Swedish hussies aren’t fooling me.”

“Well, it was very creative,” he says with a wide smile. “You should be a poet.”

“I am,” I say with another fake smile. “But I write my poetry in Sanskrit, which is, you know… a dead language. So, nobody buys them.”

“That’s too bad,” he says as he leans forward.

“Not really. It means I get to stay here and enjoy all of this magic.” I wave my hand around the crappy dilapidated diner with a smile.

“He’s cute,” my coworker Debbie says when I walk behind the counter. “You should ask him out.”

“No, thanks,” I say as I put the dirty dishes in the basket. “I don’t date customers.”

“Then who do you date?”

“At the moment? Nobody. In the past? Nobody.”

She laughs. “My brother is single.”

I shake my head as I give her a sad look. “Now, why would you put your poor brother through that kind of torture?”

“So, you’re just going to be single forever?” she asks with a grin.

I shrug. “It certainly appears that way.” I’m twenty-two and still have my crisp shiny V-card in my wallet.

It’s not that I haven’t had any opportunities. I’m not the prettiest of girls, but I have hips and a round ass that always gets attention. I just never felt a click with any guy before. You know that click… Julia Roberts has made a whole career from acting out that click. The internal feeling of something just sliding into place just right. That’s what I’m waiting for. That’s why I’m still a virgin with a capital V.

“Here we go,” Debbie says as her back straightens and her eyes widen. She’s staring through the large windows into the parking lot.

I follow her gaze to where two sleek gorgeous men are stepping out of a shiny new Porsche. They look like they could be brothers with their similar dark features and matching jade green eyes.

“Oh, man,” Debbie says under her breath as she quickly fixes her hair. “Even you can’t turn these guys down.”

“Watch me,” I say, taking it as a challenge.

She’s shaking her head as she shamelessly stares at them. “I’d dump twenty years of marriage down the toilet for an afternoon with both of them.”

“Yeah,” he says as he tosses me a card. “I do.”

I laugh as I look at it. Shit, a two of hearts.

“Then you’re even dumber than I thought,” I say with a laugh. “Everything ends eventually. This poker game will end. The sun burning will end. Our lives will end.”

“When will this conversation end?” Rylan asks with a groan.

“And your intense love for your mate will end,” I tell him.

Ethan just shakes his head. I’m trying to prepare him for the inevitable, but I can’t get through his thick skull. If he was smart, he would have ran in the opposite direction when he first smelled his mate, Chloe.

Instead, he’s trapped. They’re living together and she’s pregnant. The poor bear is caught in something worse than a bear trap. He’s caught in domestic hell.

“I’m glad for Ethan,” Westin says as he gets his second card. “I can’t wait to find my mate.”

I sigh as I look at my second card. A seven of clubs. The worst possible hand you can get in Texas Hold ‘Em poker. I’m playing with Ethan, Westin, and Rylan in the fire station while we wait for some action. It’s been quiet for the entire fall and we’re starting to go nuts. It’s mid-November now and the last time we got a call for a fire was in July.

Our Chief, Blake, was playing, but he bowed out when the mayor called about half an hour ago and he’s been on the line with him ever since.

“I’m excited too,” Rylan says with a youthful smile as he picks up his card and frowns. This guy is so easy to read. “I can’t wait to put my hands on her thick curves and just dive in.”

“How do you know she’s going to have curves?” I ask with a grin. “Maybe she’s going to be ninety-eight years old and only weigh sixty pounds.”

“I’d still love her,” Rylan says and my eyes roll so far back in my head that I think I just sprained them.

“You would,” Ethan says with a nod. “Don’t listen to this grumpy old bear. Finding your mate is going to be the most amazing thing to happen to you. I had given up on ever finding her and then bam! she was there.”

“And you acted like a total dick,” I remind him. “Remember that? You were growling at everyone in sight. If anyone even dared to sniff the air around her, you bit their damn head off.”

He looks embarrassed as his cheeks start to blush. “My bear went a little crazy. I’ll admit that. I couldn’t control my primal urges around her. He wanted to claim her and mark her so badly that I couldn’t think straight. But once my mark was on her neck, everything calmed down. Sort of.”

“I can’t wait to find my girl and have someone to protect,” Westin adds.

“Why bother?” I ask. “It’s better on your own. You don’t have to worry about anyone but yourself. Being stressed and worried about another person is no way to be happy. And then what happens when everything falls apart? You’ll be miserable.”

“As opposed to you, Mr. Sunshine over there?” Rylan says with a chuckle.

“Look at Ethan,” Westin says. “He’s happy. I’ve never seen anyone more happy in my life.”

Ethan smiles. “It’s true, Carter. I am pretty fucking happy.”

I let out a long sigh. Why is this so hard to get through their thick heads?

“Because it hasn’t hit him yet,” I explain. “He’s in the eye before the storm. He’s walking on train tracks listening to love songs on his Walkman and he’s too stupid in love to realize there’s a train bearing down on him about to smack him senseless.”

Westin frowns. “What’s a Walkman?”

Another sigh from me. “You don’t know what a Walkman is? You’re a child.”

“I’m twenty-seven!” he snaps back.

“Exactly.”

“What the hell is it?” Westin asks again. “Is it like an MP3 player that plays CDs?”

Rylan, the other young twenty-six-year-old genius jumps in. “No, it plays A-track tapes.”

A-track tapes? Geez, I’m only forty-two. I’m not that old.

“It plays cassettes, you morons.”

Rylan’s face scrunches up in confusion. “Did it at least have a phone on it?”

Ethan is laughing. He’s thirty-six, so for sure he had a Walkman at some point in his life. And knowing him, he probably only listened to romantic love songs on it.

We go through the first round of betting and the flop comes out with two kings and a ten. Not good for me. At all.

“What happened to you, Carter?” Ethan asks as he narrows his eyes and studies me from across the table. “Who broke your heart? Do you have a heart? Are you a robot?”
I just got a job in Montana and now the freaking building is burning down……and I’m stuck inside.
I’m about to die a broke, boyfriend-less virgin until a fireman bursts into the room.
He’s come to save me from the flames, but when I see the territorial way he’s looking at me, I start to wonder who’s going to save me from him?
Because this mean-looking grizzly bear shifter named Ethan Sullivan thinks I’m his now. “I saved you. You’re mine,” he keeps growling at me.
He keeps calling me his mate and I’m not about to correct him when he’s got that feral look in his eyes. He wants to leave his mark on me.
He keeps saying he’s going to claim me, whatever that means. I’ve always had a thing for firemen, but this rough wild-looking man is more than just a pretty image in a calendar.
He’s real. He won’t take his possessive hands off me and he’s full on obsessed with my curves.
This protective alpha wants me all for himself and he’s letting everyone know it. Especially me…

The fire alarm is blaring through the firehouse as the five of us throw on our gear and get ready to move out.

“That’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned,” Carter says as he gets behind the wheel. He closes the door and grins as he sticks his head through the open window. “Mates are more trouble than they’re worth. We’re better off without them.”

“You’re crazy,” Westin says as he runs by, looking panicked. “I can’t wait to find my mate and claim her tight little—Where the fuck is my coat?”

Our Chief, Blake, grabs Westin’s coat from where he left it on the floor and tosses it to him. “You’re not going to get a mate if you’re all burned up. Keep your shit where it’s supposed to go.”

“Sorry, Chief,” Westin says as he throws on his jacket and climbs into the firetruck.

I’m keeping my distance as I get ready. It never goes well for me when the subject of mates comes up.

“Let’s move out!” Blake shouts as he climbs into the passenger’s seat. “We got a hot one to put out.”

Carter barely waits for us to climb into the truck before he hits the gas and flies out of the fire station.

There’s silence for five wonderful seconds before the topic comes back up.

“You’re quiet back there, Ethan,” Carter says as he looks at me through the rearview mirror. “Are you on Team Mate or Team Masturbate?”

“So, that was you!” Westin snaps. “Stop clogging the drain with your spunk!”

Carter grins. “Never.”

I hate talking about mates. My jackass inner grizzly bear was cool all morning, and now he’s pacing around and about to take a furry temper tantrum. He’s nasty when he gets like this—all agitated and ready to make my life miserable.

“I’m thirty-six years old,” I tell them. “I’m done.”

Rylan turns to me with his forehead all scrunched up. “What do you mean you’re done? You can’t be done when it comes to finding a mate.”

“You heard him,” Carter says with a winning smile on his face. “He’s done. He’s on team masturbate. We can be on team masturbate together.” He turns around with his hand raised for a high-five.

I leave him hanging.

“I don’t think so.”

Rylan is laughing as he nudges my arm with his elbow. “Hear that, Ethan? You and him can masturbate together.”

“All right,” I say as I open the window. “I’ll see you guys at the fire.”

I grab onto the metal rails running along the roof and pull myself up with a grunt. We’re barreling down a mountain road and I nearly get whipped by a tree branch as I climb onto the roof of the firetruck.

“Come on, guys,” I hear Blake says as I pull my foot up. “You know how his bear gets.”

I get comfortable on the roof and take a deep breath as I look at the stunning Montana mountains all around me. It’s early morning and the sun is still rising, casting the vast sky in hues of pink and purple. We were just about to have our morning coffee at the station when the alarm went off.

I sigh as I try to settle my inner grizzly bear. It can be hard working with five bear shifters, especially when they start yammering on about their fated mates. The younger guys, Westin and Rylan, are convinced that their mates are right around the corner ready to rock their world, but an extra decade on this planet has shaken that belief in me. I still haven’t found her, and believe me, I’ve looked.

I traveled the country for over a decade looking for my mate, but now I’m convinced that she’s not out there. Maybe she died young, maybe she was never born, maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Whatever happened, I’ve given up on trying to find her.

Three years ago, I moved to Blackcloud Point in Montana to settle down and become a firefighter. That’s when I gave up the lifelong dream of finding her.

The only problem is, my bear hasn’t.

He’s not on board. In fact, he’s more committed to finding her than ever.

And it’s driving me crazy.

We’re constantly at each other’s throats. He hates that I’m not out searching for her every second of every day. Whenever I go to bed or crack open a can of beer to try and relax, he starts thrashing around like a rabid animal. The constant snarling and growling in my ear is really draining and it’s starting to wear me down. I haven’t slept well in months.

We’re going to a fire, I say to him. You have to chill.

He responds with a furious roar as he charges to the surface and tries to claw his way out of me.
