Valentine
I’d been working nearly a year in my position when I’d been unceremoniously bumped up to the secretary for the boss upstairs. Unfortunately, I had two problems with that; his employees were notorious for dropping like flies, quitting, or getting fired. I didn’t want either. Second, he set off emotions I thought were only in books. My heart couldn’t handle being around the man, and now I was forced to be in his presence every day.

Wyatt
A gift and a torment. Valentine was the perfect person to replace my last office assistant, but I didn’t know if I could tolerate being around her safely. She unlocked something I’ve kept hidden away for my entire existence. Since I lost my parents, I hadn’t let a soul into my life, but Valentine might have broken down that barrier. It was just a shame she was my employee now.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Valentine

The HR manager, Agnes Fletcher, approaches my desk with a smile. She never smiles, which makes me nervous. I smile back like I would for everyone that walks through the office doors because it’s my job. What is she up to?

It’s the last day before the offices close for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday break. With government and public offices closed or with limited hours, the law firm decided to close for the holiday break. We’ll have a full week of time paid time off since the holidays fall on the weekend.

Agnes leans on my reception desk, folding her arms and grinning from ear to ear. “Valentine, I have great news for you. After the holiday break, you’re moving upstairs to the big boss’s offices.”

“What?” I shoot back in my rolling chair, hitting the wall about six feet behind my desk. My face falls, but I quickly mask it.

“I know. It’s huge.” Huge, all right. I brush loose strands of my hair behind my ear, taking a calming breath while scooting my chair back under my desk. Huge is an understatement. King size is more like it.

Working for Wyatt King isn’t for the faint of heart or those with thin skin. He’s a tough man dedicated to his career and the law, living at the office more than at his home. He expects the best from his employees, which forces his underlings to flee for less intense positions.

Mr. King still has a couple of law clerks who love the law and work just as hard, but it seems his latest receptionist has fled. “Why do you need me up there?”

Agnes sighs, losing her smile briefly. “His latest receptionist quit this week, and we need someone to replace her. You were the recommendation.”

“What about down here?” If I’m going upstairs, who would take my position? Am I that dispensable?

She stands straight and waves her hand dismissively. “We can call the temp agency we use from time to time. In fact, I have to do that as soon as I head back to my office, just in case they can’t get someone in time.”

“What if they can’t get someone to replace me?” I ask, hating to leave the team without all the help I provide daily. It’s not like I’m invaluable, but I’m still an integral part of the organization.

She smiles and shakes her head, tapping her hand flatly on my desk. “Mr. King’s office needs a proper receptionist, and you’re great at your job, so you’re being bumped up. They will just have to do without you down here.”

“Um… okay.” This is a positive step and I should see it as such, but I know there’s a chance of getting canned, or worse, showcasing that I can’t handle the pressure. Mr. King is one of the city’s most intelligent, hardworking, and fiercest lawyers. He wins cases easily, or so it seems, but those who work here know his dedication and effort make it happen.

“Don’t worry. Nothing really changes except that you’ll be working on the top floor. It has fewer visitors and more calls than this floor.” As the big dogs, they don’t have time to be checking voicemails all day or letting calls go unanswered, so they need someone to handle that task all the time.

“I suppose that’s a good thing.” There can be some seriously annoying people that appear at my desk on the regular, like the delivery drivers who enjoy flirting with me. Well, only one in particular. I haven’t reported it or anything because it’s extremely causal, but it’s clear that I’m not interested in him, and he doesn’t seem to get the hint at all.

At least all deliveries for Mr. King’s office are routed from this floor and then delivered upstairs by Jason. You’d think it would be beneath him as one of the law clerks for an associate attorney, but he goes up there for meetings almost daily anyway, so it’s not a big deal.

“Yes. Mr. King doesn’t like people in his sanctuary just in case any private information is shared.” That’s why Jason does it instead of someone like me. Although it seems now, I’ve been brought into the inner sanctum. I’m afraid I don’t want to be there.

“Understood.” I try to put on a cheerful smile. Still, I can see my reflection in the glass doors that separate the reception area from the elevators, and my expression is more of a grimace.

“Relax. I promise they’ll love you up there if you keep doing the great work you already do.”

“So, when does this all take place?” I’m hoping there’s going to be a transition period, but I doubt it.

“The first day we’re all get back in the office.” As I expected, no transition time.

“Is there anything you need me to do today to close up shop here?” I have a million questions, and I’m sure I’ll forget half of them before she makes her escape.
Mr. Hardwick will deal with his new assistant as he sees fit.
She wasn’t his to begin with, but knowing she wasn’t in his reach had been too much. Now that he had her just feet away, how could he make her his without sending her running to human resources?
A hint of attraction is all he needed to claim what had been on his mind from the moment she called out his name and took away his pain.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Lincoln

The sound of Davis’s voice drones on while my headache builds around my temples. With my head throbbing, I should have rescheduled the meeting, but I’d rather get it over with.

The ideas for the latest marketing campaign are reasonable and have potential; however, something is missing from his plan. He pauses his long-winded speech to dig through his enormous pile of documents.

Although it’s a pleasant break from his speech, I’m pressed for time, and I can’t be delayed. “Is something wrong, Mr. Davis?”

“No, Mr. Hardwick. It seems my assistant didn’t put in one of the documents.” He continues fumbling with the papers, only adding to the noise and annoyance, driving me insane. Understanding how easily an assistant can ruin a project, I will give him the benefit of the doubt; however, this meeting is at an end.

“Mr. Davis. I’m afraid I don’t have time to wait for the projections. Do you have that information in your notes?”

He looks up from his splayed-out mess on my conference room table, and the color leaves his face. “I’m afraid I don’t.” Yes, I have fired people for ineffectiveness before, but he’s the marketing director, and it would be hard to replace him over a missing document. His assistant, though, is altogether another exception. However, I’ll let it go, seeing as he’s the one who will be dealing with her.

“Well then, please have your absentminded assistant bring it up directly after lunch. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a call to take in twenty minutes that I need to prepare for. This meeting is at an end.” I close my leather portfolio and stand without waiting for a rebuttal.

“Yes, Mr. Hardwick,” he stammers, gathering his things. His two mindless employees that sat in on the meeting don’t say a word as they look at their boss while he flounders and sinks.

Normally, I’d just have the document brought up immediately, and the problem solved, but my head hurts too damn much to tolerate incompetence today. After having to fire another useless assistant, I’m forced to handle everything on my own, turning my mood sour.

I step out of the conference room and walk straight to my office, not bothering to see them out because I don’t have time for it. My schedule is already swamped, as always. Sliding off my suit jacket, I place it over my chair and sit down before I dig out the new prescription from the doctor. Hopefully, it works because my mood isn’t improving as I look through my calendar on my desk.

My next meeting runs a lot smoother, even though my head hasn’t quite eased up. After the call, I drafted the agreement for my client in North Carolina. Checking the time, I noticed it was time for lunch, so I heated the special meal I had my chef prepare for today. It’s not a bad dish, but I’m a grown man at six-foot fucking four and two hundred ten pounds. This lunch is only enough to feed a five-foot-nothing ninety-pound vegan ballerina watching her figure.

I get back to work and forget about my empty stomach because there’s a lot to get done before I’ll get out of the office. Next on my to-do list is the stack of documents my former assistant screwed up before I fired her. Without a doubt, she did it on purpose. As she was led off the floor by security, she said I was an asshole to work for and that I needed a lesson in manners.

She’s the one who needed a lesson in telling time. It wasn’t difficult or some type of science because technology made it easy for everyone to read a digital clock. Hell, they hardly made clocks with hands anymore. College educated, but she couldn’t get to work before nine every day when we started at eight—and I was considered the asshole.

An hour later and my head’s still aching, so I take another migraine pill with a bottle of water, hoping that the throbbing pain will subside, but it’s not looking good. The numbers and words on the page are starting to float around, driving me into madness. My thoughts go to my father, who passed away when he was in his thirties from a heart attack. Maybe I’m working my way into an early grave.

With a deep breath, I close my eyes and lean my head against the tall back of my leather chair. The silence eases the tension in my head, and I doze off in my seat.

“Mr. Hardwick,” a soft voice wakes me from my sleep, and I jolt straight up in my seat, ignoring the flash of pain in my temple. A woman I’ve never met before stands with one hand mid-air, about to knock again on my open office door frame. She’s small, barely five-foot-two blonde with a slender body, a rounded face, and bright blue eyes. Anxiousness screams from her body as she teeters from one foot to the other. Her eyes are expressive as she waits for my reply, but my brain is still trying to process her presence.
Marilyn: I could have my own bakery if I wanted, and my older brother would have it set up for me in a heartbeat. The problem is that I have something to prove. I’m not a spoiled girl who gets everything her brother throws her way, but people have always assumed it, so I’ve worked tirelessly to get perfect grades in my pastry program. Now, to show off my skills in a bakery. The only problem is everyone believes I got the job by sleeping with my new boss. And I am…
Technically, there’s no reason for me to rent a hotel room for the night when I live nearby, but my brother wanted to spoil me rotten with all the amenities before my big day tomorrow. Besides, they have a very nice bar downstairs for us to party in without needing to alert my brother’s guards.

Lacey and Casey are out to cause trouble tonight, so we all promised to wear something super sexy tonight and well, I’m just a very good friend. I found this faux leather outfit, and I’m obsessed. It’s not a dress I’d ever wear outside, but for them, I’ll do it.

Scurrying my bum down to the lobby, I spot two guys heading into the bar and I nearly trip because the tall one’s profile immediately grabs my attention. Every feature on his face fits perfectly, like it’s been chiseled out of the finest marble from the greatest sculptor. Lips that beg to be kissed, even with that scowl forming. I wish he’d turn all the way so I could see all of him. My body is alive with desire for the first time, and I crave more. Damn, I need a drink now.

“Mare,” Lacey shouts, causing my tall distraction’s scowl to deepen even though he refused to look in the direction of the noise. I spin around to the revolving doors and see my besties coming in, looking hot in their outfits. We’re all wearing little black dresses, but I’m the only one in black heels. The girls both have matching black dress sandals.

“Case, Lace, I’m so glad you’re here.” I throw my arms around them, and we squeeze tightly and giggle.

“So how about a drink and celebrate a bit before they find us,” Lacey whispers in a conspiratorial, hush-like tone.

“They find us?” I ask. I look around the hotel lobby, wondering if she’s referring to my brother’s guards.

“Yeah. My boss seems to think since my promotion that I’m his personal assistant at his beck and call. He can go fuck himself.”

“That’s cause you want him to fuck you,” Casey teases.

She slaps her arm and stomps her foot. “Bish, don’t be calling me out like that just because he’s fine as hell. The man has no idea I’m anything more than a workhorse. ‘Lacey, do this. Lacey, do that.’ I want to throat punch him.”

“I think you like him bossing you around,” I tease, making sure I’m out of slapping distance.

“Whatever. I need a drink now before he starts texting me about his meeting agenda that I’m totally ignoring because it’s not due until Tuesday.”

We walk into the bar and I immediately look for the men who walked in, but I don’t see them. I’m not even sure why I care. It’s not as if I have the balls to do something given that I’m a twenty-one-year-old virgin for a reason. It might be the fact that I have an overprotective older brother who has had guards watching over me since he could.

We’re celebrating Lacey’s promotion at work and my graduation from a culinary program. It was an eighteen-month set of courses on baking, which I honestly didn’t need but wanted. Our waitress comes over and takes our order for a round of shots and three mixed drinks. I think that’s going to be the totality of my drinking since I need to be up early and baking my heart out to earn a spot that I rightfully deserve with one of the top bakeries in the country.

“Girl, that guy over there hasn’t taken his eyes off you,” Casey says, dipping her head to the side. I can’t see him unless I turn, and that would be completely obvious.

“What do you mean? What guy?”

“Mare, just go ahead and look to your left. Trust me—you won’t be disappointed,” Casey presses.

“That hot fucking guy sitting at the table with another man,” Lacey agrees. I turn to my left and follow their gazes. Meeting his intent stare, I let out a gasp. Holy hell, it’s the same man that I saw earlier and this time, he’s the one staring at me. Goodness, the man is equally gorgeous from the front.

He has medium brown hair that’s cut short and textured yet neat with the sides and back shorter. I want to run my hands through it, wondering if he looks even sexier with mussed-up locks. Suddenly the hotel bar has gotten twenty degrees hotter and a lot smaller. I rub the back of my neck under my long hair ever so slightly as if there’s already sweat beginning to form.

He winks at me, and a blush spreads across my cheeks and I turn my head back to our table. “Come on, Mare, don’t be shy. He looks like he could finally get you out of that situation you’re in.” She gives me a nudge with her elbow and wink.
The smell of food from the first-floor café hits my nose, making my already nervous stomach rumble. Suddenly, I regret not eating breakfast this morning. I’m not a breakfast person; today must be the exception.

I’m not sure I’m able to handle this position, but I need the money. I came all the way from the southside of the city for this job, so I can’t turn around now. The trip took me forty-five minutes and a lot of stress, but it’s an opportunity I can’t pass up, even if I’m underqualified—seriously underqualified.

“Miss? Can I help you?” the security guard at the front desk asks. I’d been so lost in my own nerves that I hadn’t noticed the woman with long black hair, about five years older than me, dressed in a dark blue blazer with the building logo emblazoned on the breast pocket. This is a twelve-story building, which is considered average in the city. Not every building downtown is the size of the Willis Tower.

“Yes, I’m here for my first day working for Shaw Enterprises,” I speak up, finding my voice; it’s weak and shaky, making me feel even more unsure of myself by the second.

“Okay. May I see some identification?” she asks, arching her brow with a bit of suspicion in her eyes that doesn’t do anything to ease the first-day jitters. Although, I suspect it’s not her job to make me comfortable; she’s here to keep people safe.

“Oh, yes,” I mutter, digging through my bag for my wallet. “Sorry. One more second,” I grunt while I continue the search. I can’t believe I’m not prepared. I stop and slap my forehead when it hits me. It’s in the front zipper for a reason—so I’d be ready for this morning. Opening it up, I hand it over to the woman and she smiles. “I put it here so I could easily grab it.”

When I look at her again, she’s smiling kindly at me. “Don’t worry—first-day jitters. It’s best that you shake them out here anyway.” She checks my ID and then looks at something on her computer for what I’m assuming is my name on a list for something. “Take this elevator up to the ninth floor. You’re scheduled to meet with Linda Hoffman in Human Resources.”

“Thank you. Have a great day.”

“You, too. Good luck!” She seems much nicer knowing that I’m actually not some crazy person trying to get into the building uninvited.

“Thanks. I’m going to need it,” I mutter that last bit, tucking my wallet back into my bag while my low heels click toward the bank of six elevators, three on each side. I tap the up button and wait, tension only doubling in my stomach, creating a nervousness that I’ve never felt before. I’ve been apprehensive, scared, but I’ve always tried to see the brighter side of things, and looked at it as the next challenge in my shitty life. This is different. I feel so afraid of fucking up, like there’s so much more at stake than temp work. Maybe it’s because my last assignment went so terribly wrong.

I look up at the cameras hidden in the corner of the corridor and no, it’s not that. My heart does a leap out of my chest, as if I can sense someone actually watching me. I know someone is, and not just the girl in the front who’s probably monitoring all the cameras, but someone else. The elevator doors ping and open, shaking me out of those silly thoughts. Ignoring that train of thought, I press the button for the ninth floor and then take a calming breath before it comes to a stop.

When I step off, I’m greeted by a hallway and a set of glass doors that say Shaw Enterprises Administration Offices. I walk through the doors and see a receptionist who tosses a friendly smile my way. “You must be Miss Novak.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Linda will be out in a minute to retrieve you. Would you like a bottle of water, juice, or coffee?”

“I’ll have orange juice, please.”

“Yes, just one minute. I’m Casey, by the way.” She shakes my hand, and I already feel a little more at ease. She comes back about fifteen seconds later with a bottle of Minute Maid Orange Juice and smiles as she hands it to me before looking behind me. “Ah, here she is.”

“Petra? I’m Linda Hoffman, the human resources director. Please follow me.” She’s equally as friendly as Casey and I don’t feel as shitty as I did when I first came in, although I’m a bit overwhelmed the second she mentions who I’m working for.

“Mr. Shaw? As in Shaw Enterprises?”

“Yes, didn’t the agency inform you that you’d be working for the CEO and owner?”
