She was forty, widowed, and done with love…until a younger Alpha made her burn.

I came to claim my inheritance…and found her instead.

For twenty years, Vivienne Jamison endured a loveless marriage to a cruel and heartless Alpha. I've seen the scars he left behind—the way she flinches instinctively, doubts her own beauty, and blames herself for things that were never her fault.

The Pack sees a barren widow whose best years are behind her—I see a strong, beautiful woman who deserves to be cherished.

From the moment I met her, I felt drawn to her in a way I've never experienced before. Every instinct inside me wants to protect her, care for her, and give her the happiness she's been denied for far too long.
Too bad Pack Law says she's forbidden to me.

My heart was in the grave…until he came.

After twenty years of being blamed for something that was never my fault, I thought my life was over. Then Corwyn arrived.

This new Alpha is everything my late husband wasn't—kind, protective, and impossible to resist. However, the BlackRidge Pack is governed by ancient laws and cruel traditions—they expect me to remain single and alone, honoring the memory of a man I never loved.

When I come into my first real Heat at 40, staying away from Cor becomes harder than either of us imagined. It doesn’t matter that he’s ten years younger than me—I want him and he wants me.

The Pack says we're forbidden. Our hearts disagree. But if we’re caught, we’ll pay the price.
For breaking the Unbreakable Laws carries only one punishment— death .

The Widow's Forbidden Heat is a steamy Omegaverse romance featuring a curvy older heroine, a devoted younger Alpha, fated mates, forbidden love, small-town secrets, protective hero vibes, emotional healing, and a guaranteed happily ever after

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

VIVIENNE

The man in the casket was my husband, but I felt nothing when I looked at him.

Carter Jamison had been a cold man, and I mean that literally. Every time he touched me his hands were like ice. Just thinking about it made me shiver.

But he was cold in other ways too—cold and aloof, never interested in anything I had to say. I had been sold to him when I was barely twenty—a virgin who had been sequestered for years to keep me that way—and he’d never shown me a single spark of warmth or affection.

I was so innocent on our wedding night, I had no idea what was coming. I was only told I must hold still and submit to my husband and do whatever he told me.

That might not have been a problem if my husband had been a kind man—one who cared about his wife’s pain or the terror I felt when I first saw the crooked shaft of his manhood with its ugly, bloated knot coming towards me.

Closing my eyes, I remembered the sharp feeling inside me—like someone stabbing with a knife—and the way my eyes had filled with tears. My eyes with the Royal Golden Rim—the thin ring of gold around each iris that proclaimed I had some Royal Were blood in me. They had marked me as special—as a woman who would bear the man who was lucky enough to mate with her many strong sons.

It was a promise I never fulfilled for Carter, despite the prophecy.

Not that he didn’t try to get me pregnant. Every month during my Heat Cycle—which was never very strong—he tried. After a time, I stopped dreading the encounters and got used to the grunting and thrusting on top of me. For all its ugliness, his shaft wasn’t very big. After those first few times, it didn’t hurt anymore. And a year or so after that, I barely noticed it in me. I was able to close my eyes and imagine myself someplace much more pleasant—the beach maybe, or the mountains.

I have always wanted to travel, but Carter preferred to stay put. He ruled the Blackridge Pack with an iron fist, and he didn’t like leaving his territory in case someone might get out of line. The few times he went to multi-Pack meetings in other states, he refused to take me.

“You’ll only get into trouble,” he’d grunt, when I begged to go with him so I could see someplace new. He called me ungrateful for pleading to go away. After all, hadn’t he given me a mansion to live in?

Wolverton Manor was a grand home, I had to admit. It has turrets and towers and battlements—just like a castle. It’s not a “McMansion” as Carter scornfully called the other grand houses in our small town. Parts of it were brought over from England—they used to be the walls of a monastery before Carter bought them and brought them here.

But the Manor was built long before I was born—back when he was still in his “exploring phase” as he put it, the few times he talked about his adventures in Europe and the Far East. By the time we wed, he was nearly sixty and had had his fill of traveling.

“I just want to stay home by my own fire,” he would growl, when I mentioned how nice it might be to go for a vacation somewhere. “Stop your prattling, girl! I don’t have time for your nonsense!”

Carter had never had time for my “nonsense” or any other part of me, except what was between my legs. As time went on, though, and he failed to get me pregnant, he grew bitter and angry.

He would complain about it often though and curse me for not giving him an heir. He said the soothsayer who had made the prophecy about the “girl with gold-ringed eyes who would bear many strong heirs to a male of the Jamison line” was nothing but a liar and a thief who had taken his money when he asked for a Truth Saying.

Of course, he sent me to a fertility clinic—though he refused to go himself. They poked and prodded and studied me and though they admitted that my Heat Cycle was extremely mild, there was nothing actually wrong with my womb. So there was nothing to be done but bring me home again and try some more.

They even gave me fertility drugs to take—not that they did any good. I just couldn’t seem to conceive, no matter how I tried. Eventually Carter cursed me and called me “barren.”

I didn’t dare to suggest that he get tested too—even though the forbidden internet searches I did explained that the failure to get pregnant might not be my fault. A man his age might have a low sperm count, after all, but Carter would hear none of that. He was an Alpha—who ever heard of an Alpha with a low sperm count?
Perimenopause, a cheating lizard husband, and a zombie bite. Cassie is having the worst day of her life...until two Kindred warriors take her in.
*This is a PLUS-length novel--over 140,000 words long

Cassie is curvy, perimenopausal, stranded on an alien planet, and trapped in a miserable marriage to a cold-blooded lizard man who no longer wants her. When the Hunger Virus turns citizens into ravenous Infected, her husband lets the city cast her outside the gates as Zombie food.
But Cassie doesn’t die.

A huge, half-feral Beast Kindred rescues her and carries her to an underground bunker, where a brilliant Blood Kindred scientist is desperately searching for a cure.
Ravik is infected and losing himself to the Hunger…but Cassie’s scent brings him back.
Severin is cold, controlled, and all science—until he realizes Cassie’s changing human body may be the key to a cure.

Now Cassie is trapped in an undergrown bunker with two massive Kindred warriors who both need her in forbidden ways. Ravik wants to claim her. Severin wants to study her. And the cure they’re creating demands touch, blood, pleasure…and a three-way bond none of them are ready to name.

Beast Kindred don’t share mates. Blood Kindred don’t either.
But Cassie may be the one woman who changes all the rules.

This spicy sci-fi romance features a curvy mature heroine, perimenopause power, alien zombie outbreak danger, forced proximity, protective Kindred warriors, MFM heat, healing bites, body worship, forbidden sharing, and a happily ever after ending that will make your toes curl and your heart melt

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

CASSIE

“Don’t do this, Sskarth—please, I’m begging you! Don’t let them put me outside the city gates!”

Cassie faced her husband, her hands clasped over her pounding heart, her eyes filled with tears of pure panic. All around her, the Visskous hissed their disapproval. They were a cold-blooded people—literally, since the inhabitants of Visslick Prime were lizard-like both in appearance and in biology.

She’d thought that Sskarth was so handsome and exotic when she met him on the Kindred Mother Ship. He had a sleek, slim body with a swimmer’s build and his purple scales flashed with iridescent brilliance when the light caught them just right.

He had thought that Cassie was exotic too, apparently—a prize to be won and brought back to his home world for display. The Visskous were a jealous people and there was nothing they liked more than having something exclusive that everyone else would admire and envy.

At first, Cassie had been a trophy wife—a human female from another galaxy—so unusual and unique that every other male envied Sskarth. He had a mate unlike any other woman on the planet and everything about her was considered odd and exciting. From the “silk” she grew from the top of her head to the pale, scaleless skin that covered her curvy frame, it seemed that every Visskous male who saw her wanted her.

That had been nice…for a while. Before coming to work on the Mother Ship and meeting Sskarth—who was visiting to establish trade relations with the Kindred—she’d been married for twenty years to a husband who didn’t appreciate her.

Mitchell, her ex, had been a total misogynist who had believed a woman’s job was having babies and making sandwiches. It had taken Cassie ten years to realize what a jerk he was and then ten more years after that to finally get away from him. She waited until her last son was in college and then she filed for divorce and applied for a job on board the Kindred Mother Ship on the same day.

If only she would have stayed there, she wouldn’t be in this position now, she thought, looking around at the bad-tempered lizard people, all flicking their forked tongues at her and hissing their displeasure and disapproval. She might even have found a nice Kindred warrior to settle down with. Even though she was past 40 by then, there were still Kindred who might have been interested.

But then Sskarth came into the picture. He wooed her with his extravagant wealth and promises that they would “live in a city of crystal spires together and love until the end of time.” After years spent with a taciturn asshole like Mitch, Cassie’s head had been completely turned by the overwhelming romance and what she now understood was love bombing of the alien male. She had agreed to join with Sskarth and go live with him on Visslick Prime.

And now she was regretting it because she was about to be put outside the gorgeous Crystal City to die.

“Please Sskarth!” she begged again. “I’m your mate! You can’t just put me outside the walls because I’m not a Visskous!”

“But how do we know you won’t catch the disease and spread it?” one of the lizard women demanded, giving her a hard stare through her slitted eyes. She was distinguishable from the males only by the limp, leathery crest of skin that started at her forehead and ran down the middle of her skull like a flaccid Mohawk.

“What makes you think I’d catch it or spread it?” Cassie asked in exasperation. “I’m not even Visskous—I probably can’t even get it.”

“Then you won’t mind living outside the city gates with the Infected,” the woman hissed, her forked tongue flickering in satisfaction. “Since you don’t think you’d be affected by the Rotting Disease.”

“I never said that!” Cassie protested, horrified. “Just because I might not be susceptible to the disease, doesn’t mean I want to be exposed to it!”

Or torn apart by the Infected, she thought but didn’t say because the thought was too horrible to speak aloud.

The Rotting Disease—also known as “The Hunger”—had first appeared on Visslick Prime a little over a year ago. It started with a whitening of the eyes—a kind of film grew over the pupils and irises of the victims, giving them a dead-eyed stare that was horrible to behold. Next came the red streaks around the mouth and nose that looked almost like blood—hence the name “blood sign” as the Visskous had dubbed it.

After that, the Hunger appeared—a ravenous, gnawing desire for living flesh, gnawed right off the bone. Once that happened—once the victim took his or her first bite of living flesh from a victim—it was all over. They became a mindless zombie-type creature—a walking corpse wandering aimlessly in search of living victims to cannibalize. Gradually their flesh became affected, rotting off their bones, but they kept on going, searching for their next feeding ground—their next mindless meal.
He’s savage, scarred, and starving for her…and she’s the only cure for his madness.

Brux
Brux has lost his mate, his world, and most of his mind. Trapped in his primal wolf form, the Lykan Monstrum warrior is sliding toward permanent madness—until a curvy human female rescues him. Every touch from Dr. Kiera Stone pulls him back from the void. Every taste of her makes him want more. But the Goddess grants a Lykan only one true mate, and Brux is certain he does not deserve another.

Kiera
Kiera thinks she’s bringing home a giant alien wolf for her sanctuary. Instead, she gets a fiercely protective Monstrum male with a tragic past, a savage streak, and two thick shafts built to claim a mate in ways no human male ever could. The more Brux reveals about how his kind Bond with a woman, the more Kiera fears him…and hungers for him.

When a deadly enemy comes for Kiera, Brux must unleash the savage side of himself to save her. But the only way to keep him from losing his mind forever may be for Kiera to accept both his shafts in order to form the fierce, intimate Soul-Bond that ties a Lykan to his mate for life.

Tied to the Lykan is a spicy alien monster romance with a wolf shifter hero, a curvy heroine, fated mates, forced proximity, two-shaft anatomy, knotting, fur play, primal passion, and an emotional HEA

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

KIERA

“Well, here we are—they’re probably waiting for us, so we’d better get moving,” Iyanna said, smiling at Kiera as she landed the extra—large shuttle on a huge landing pad just outside the massive Ba’ltzian Animal Rescue ship.

The BAR ship looked like what might happen if someone filled a really big shopping mall full of exotic, alien animals and shot it into space. It was enormous and bulky and the Ba’ltzians—who were alien animal rights activists—kept adding new rooms and habitats onto it to accommodate the new creatures they found in distress. It never landed on any planet—the Ba’ltzians preferred to send shuttles for animal recovery when they needed to. So it could afford to be massive and unwieldy since it never left space.

“We’d better get in there!” Kiera Stone tried to keep from jumping up and down in her seat in anticipation. As the head Zoologist of the Alien Animal Sanctuary located on Plo’nix, the second moon of Had’lor Prime, she was in charge of getting new animals to display and care for. It was her dream job and she absolutely loved it.

The sanctuary was sponsored by the Monstrum Kindred and she’d been given basically unlimited resources to work with, which made her new job even better.

The Monstrum were huge alien warriors who had come through a rip in the space/time continuum when their own universe was attacked and overrun by Darklings—horrible extra—dimensional creatures who fed on pain and misery and could strip the flesh from a living being’s bones in seconds.

Through a strange twist of fate, the Monstrum warriors often resembled Earth animals themselves, which seemed to make them more sensitive to the plight of neglected exotic beasts. And so their leader, Commander Rarev—who looked rather like a humanoid lion—had decided that an alien animal sanctuary was a good idea.

“For,” he’d said, when he hired Kiera to head the sanctuary, “Maybe if the humans visit and see other alien creatures being cared for and kept, they will more easily accept us among them. We need to broaden their minds.”

Kiera agreed with him there. The Monstrum had a big problem with PR—lots of people accused the women who mated with them of having “unnatural desires” because they looked like animals. Kiera didn’t believe that, though. To her, the Monstrum seemed nicer and more trustworthy than human men. Of course, part of that opinion might have to do with her love of animals…and part might be the fact that her fiancé had literally left her at the altar barely a year ago.

But Jerome getting cold feet—and subsequently running off with one of her bridesmaids—actually turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened to Kiera. It had forced her out of the rut her life had fallen into. She’d been the head Zoologist at Laury Park Zoo in Tampa—a nice enough small zoo with plenty of exhibits—but she’d always craved more of a challenge.

She wanted adventure…excitement…and a fresh start. And that was when Iyanna had called her from the Monstrum Mother Ship and let her know there was an opening. She’d explained that the Monstrum were building an alien animal sanctuary that was going to be open to the public once it was finished. The Monstrum would ferry interested humans to the sanctuary where they could view the exotic alien animals for free—from a safe distance, of course, because some of the creatures were quite fierce.

There were tamer and quieter animals there too, though. Kiera was especially excited about the petting zoo she was developing for kids. It included, among other things, some theebles from Hama’ba’ba Nine which looked a little bit like neon—colored kittens with beaks like birds. They echoed everything that was said to them in high, cheeping voices which made them absolutely hilarious in the right circumstances.

The last time Kiera had gone to visit them, she’d closed the containment gate on her thumb and had let loose without thinking. Suddenly, she was surrounded by a cheeping chorus of,

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” in high, angelic voices that echoed through the entire pen.

In the end, she cracked up laughing and forgot all about her hurt thumb. She was going to have to put a sign on the exhibit, asking people to watch their language, she thought, but she was sure the theebles would be a very popular part of the petting zoo.

There were more animals planned, both for the petting zoo and the sanctuary. Some were too dangerous to display, except from afar. Like the Vorn she’d acquired on Sap’sorn Delta last week. It had a thick, muscular body like an American Bison with a mouth that put any Great White shark to shame. It had three concentric rows of jagged, self—sharpening teeth and also tentacles on either side of its jaws, used for dragging hapless prey down its bright red gullet.
Alpha warrior with a submissive secret

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

KAITLYN

“What’s this meeting about? Do we have a new assignment?” Ambassador Kaitlyn Prior asked as she looked up at the massive Kindred warrior walking by her side.

She had a long way to look, since Braze, her Kindred Protector, was over seven feet tall. But since Kaitlyn was just shy of six feet herself, she didn’t feel intimidated by the height difference—in fact, she liked it. Her ex-husband had been two inches shorter than she was and he’d been extremely self-conscious about it, which meant she could never wear heels. It was nice to look up at a man for a change, she thought.

“Fuck if I know,” Braze rumbled, his broad shoulders rolling in a shrug under his crimson uniform shirt. He was a Beast Kindred and had the thick, black hair and golden eyes of his kind to prove it. He also had a black beard that was neatly clipped on the sides and around his mouth. However, it was braided into two small plaits at his chin—the mark of the savage tribe he’d come from on the Beast Kindred home world of Rageron.

Kaitlyn thought he was extremely handsome—in a rugged, Alpha Male kind of way—but since he almost certainly wasn’t interested in the kinds of things she was into in the bedroom, she’d decided to leave him strictly alone. Plus, he was her co-worker—her Protector—and mixing work relationships and romance was a bad idea. She ought to know—she’d met her ex at her first job right out of college and look how well that had turned out.

The problem was, she and her ex, Mark, had gotten married too young, Kaitlyn mused. Neither of them really knew what they wanted at that age. Now, as a woman in her middle years, she had a much better idea of what she wanted out of life, and it wasn’t just being a mom and a wife.

Thank goodness she hadn’t let Mark talk her into giving up on her goals. He’d sneered at her for wanting to finish her degree in Xeno-cultural Anthropology with an emphasis on matriarchal societies, but Kaitlyn had kept at it anyway and she’d recently earned her PhD.

“What the hell can you do with a degree like that?” Mark had demanded in exasperation when Kaitlyn had insisted on making time to continue her classes. He considered it an imposition anytime he had to be responsible for their two kids and Kaitlyn’s studies had cut into his free time with his fantasy football league. “It’s worthless—a waste of time!”

As it turned out, her degree wasn’t a waste of time. Kaitlyn had been intending to teach at a university somewhere, but then a job aboard the Kindred Mother Ship had opened up. She had actually heard about it from one of her professors who had also acted as a mentor. She had gotten Kaitlyn an interview and now she was working for the Kindred as a Cultural Ambassador to new alien races. After finalizing her divorce and making sure that her youngest son was settled comfortably at college, she’d moved up to the Mother Ship to pursue her new career.

Since meeting and studying new people was Kaitlyn’s favorite thing to do, her new job suited her perfectly. She hadn’t been quite so sure about the Protector who had been assigned to her at first, however. Braze was so big and muscular, he looked like the kind of guy who would have trouble treating a woman as his equal.

However, in this case, her first impression had been wrong. The huge Beast Kindred might look like a bad-ass biker who would call you “little lady” and throw you over his shoulder before riding off into the sunset, but he didn’t act like that at all.

Well, there was that one time he’d thrown her over his shoulder, Kaitlyn reminded herself, but he’d had an excuse. They were being attacked by an angry mob on Velux Three. At the time, Kaitlyn had been wearing a pair of ridiculously tall, stilt-like ceremonial shoes which were part of the outfit she had to wear to attend the Veluxian Court. She couldn’t run in the damn things—hell, she could barely walk in them! And then they’d been confronted by the mob, who wanted to overthrow the monarchy. They had caught Kaitlyn coming out of the Veluxian Royal Palace dressed as a lady of the Court and there had been murder in their eyes—which was saying a lot since Veluxians had six eyes apiece.

“Now, hold on…” Kaitlyn had begun, putting out her hands in a “don’t shoot” gesture. “Just let me explain…”

But none of the angry Veluxian revolutionaries seemed interested in explanations. They had started coming right at Kaitlyn, chanting about “the blood of the wicked must paint the streets” or some such ominous thing.

Braze had assessed the situation and then flipped her over one broad shoulder as though she weighed no more than a pillow—which gave Kaitlyn a new appreciation of her Protector’s raw physical strength, since that was absolutely not the case. Then he had run flat-out with the angry mob behind them for over a mile to get them back to their ship—an impressive feat considering Kaitlyn was bouncing on his shoulder the whole time.
Welcome to the Shadow Realm—where monsters rule, magic is currency, and curvy women are power.
(This is a plus-length novel, over 100K words long)

Lucian
I am Lucian Draxos—Vampire Don of the Shadow Realm.
Ruthless. Immortal…and Cursed.

My father doomed our bloodline by stealing a forbidden artifact, and now the Blood Lust is close to overwhelming me. There is only one cure the blood of a Curvy Queen—a woman whose magic is so potent it’s been outlawed for centuries.

Julia was never meant to exist in my world. She is human…vulnerable. Not to mention dangerous to the fragile balance holding the Shadow Realm together.

But I do what I must—I have her taken—kidnapped from the Human world and brought to my home, The Crimson Spires.
She calls me a monster. She calls me her enemy.
She tells me she’s not my personal blood bank.

I have to admit—I’m intrigued by her fire. She draws me like no other woman ever has.
The most dangerous truth of all?
I don’t just want her blood.
I want her.

Julia
One minute I’m living my normal, boring human life as a mid-level accountant with a horrible boss.
The next, I’m kidnapped and dragged into a nightmare realm dominated by monsters who are also Mafia Dons, ruling a shadowy kingdom.
The worst of them all is Lucian—he’s cold, beautiful, and terrifying.
He’s also a Vampire.

He says I’m a Curvy Queen. He tells me that because of my curves, my body holds forbidden magic…says my blood can cure his curse.
Too bad for him—I’m not anyone’s magical blood bank.
I don’t trust him.
I don’t want him.
And I definitely don’t belong in the Shadow Realm.

But the longer I’m trapped in his world, the more I realize something far more dangerous than his curse is at work.
Because the Vampire Don who stole me…might be the only one who can keep me alive.
And I’m not sure whether I want to escape him…
or claim my throne beside him as His Curvy Queen of Blood

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

LUCIAN DRAXOS — Don of the Crimson Syndicate

“Show her to me.” I stare down at the polished obsidian mirror on the desk before me. I know using the Crimson Eye to see the little human will weaken me and make my Blood Lust worse—it’s a cursed artifact, which means it can’t give without taking. But I can’t help myself—I need to see her.

I reach into my suit pocket and pull out a miniature dagger, small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. I draw it from its intricate golden sheath and prick the pad of my right forefinger before letting a single drop of blood fall onto the deep black surface of the mirror.

The droplet of crimson sits there for a moment—a single mote in a sea of velvety black. Then the Crimson Eye absorbs it, taking the sacrifice I offered.

A deep ache of anticipation fills me as I watch the blood drop swallowed. After a moment, a circular, scarlet pattern begins. It starts in the center of the mirror and swirls outward until it reaches the edges of the silver frame.

Then…finally, it shows the woman I’ve been longing to see.

There she is—Julia Carter. She’s the one I’ve been looking for—the one the prophecy foretold. This curvy little human is the only one who can at last quench the Blood Lust that’s been burning in me for years. It goes by many names—the Crimson Fever, the Red Madness, the Endless Thirst…and she’s the only cure.

And what a cure she is.

She’s a gorgeous little human with heavy breasts, wide hips, a luscious ass, and thick thighs just made to wrap around a male’s head. She has long, wavy brown hair and big hazel eyes that can look green in some lights and blue in others. Today they look blue because she’s wearing a long sleeved, deep blue blouse that brings out the red highlights in her dark brown hair and makes her skin look creamy.

I love to watch her move…the roll of her hips…the way her breasts shift under the silky top she’s wearing. I wonder how sensitive her nipples are—would she like it if I teased them with my fangs?

But it’s not just her gorgeous full curves that make my cock rock-hard in the trousers of my expensive Luguistano suit. It’s the blood-red aura I see glowing all around her.

That glow indicates the presence of the Sanguis Vita or “Blood Nectar” as my people call it. It’s a rare substance in the blood which makes it richer and more nourishing. The Thirstborn male who drinks from a human woman with the Sanguis Vita in her blood will feel his power and vitality increase tenfold. And a male like myself—one afflicted with the Blood Lust—can be cured by taking regular doses, straight from her vein. Only human women with full, abundant curves have this attribute—unfortunately, they are forbidden here in the Shadow Realm.

Curvy human women—or “Abundant Queens” as we call them here—have special attributes that all those who live here in the Shadow Realm desire. Because of their fuller figures and abundant flesh, they have more magic in their blood—it makes them damn near irresistible to the creatures living here—myself included.

We of the Thirstborn want them for their Sanguis Vita, as I said before. The Demons of The House of Vice covet full-figured women for their ability to increase Lust Magic. The Dragons of the Ashen Hoard want Abundant Queens because they can purify treasure and multiply gold.

And the list goes on. Of the six Factions living here in the Shadow Realm— The Crimson Syndicate, The House of Vice, The Ashen Hoard, The Thorn Cartel, The Ossuary Circle, and The Iron Alliance—every one of us has a special use for human women with abundant curves. We all deal in our own kinds of vice and we all keep to ourselves…until we want the same thing…or the same woman.

In the past, Abundant Queens have been known to cause bloody, devastating wars between the syndicates that lasted for years. Which is why the Magistrate of the Shadow Realm has outlawed them.

Not that I care about any fucking law. Now that I’ve finally found my own Curvy Queen—one with the rare Sanguis Vita—I have to have her.

Julia Carter is going to be mine.

1

Jules

JULIE “JULES” CARTER — Accountant at Sutherland and Sons

I’m at work when I feel that itching between my shoulder blades again—that feeling like someone is watching me.

I look around the office, trying to see who it is. Is that creepy Donald Pugh trying to stare down my blouse or up my skirt again? He’s a senior accountant who works on the same floor as me and he’s always sneaking around, trying to get his clammy hands on me.

I tried complaining to HR after the last Christmas party when he got drunk and grabbed my ass, but I was brushed off. The head of HR—who is a man, by the way—hinted that I ought to be happy about the situation. Apparently, the fact that I’m “plus-sized” as he put it, should make me desperate enough to welcome male attention from anyone—even a creep like Donald Pugh. Ugh.
I was her prisoner...she was my enemy. Now I'd burn kingdoms to keep her. (plus-sized novel, over 100K long)

Valen
I’ve been chained like a beast for a year.
Collared. Muzzled. Left to rot in a dungeon beneath the palace of my enemy.
But when his sister, a curvy little princess, offers me freedom in exchange for a favor, I listen.
She needs a dragon to fly her across the Poison Desert to save her dying mother.
And I need her blood to Shift.
But not just any bite will do.

I have to sink my fangs into her inner thigh—right next to her untouched, forbidden heat.
And when I do… she moans.
She tastes like magic…feels like destiny…and smells like MINE.
Now we’re bound together on a dangerous quest full of cursed forests, wicked witches, and ancient trials that force us closer with every step.
She was supposed to be a means to an end...
But now I’d burn down kingdoms to keep her.

Irena
They said the beast in the dungeon was dangerous.
They were right.
But I’m desperate—and the only way to save my mother is to make a deal with the terrifying man in chains.
He’s not just a man—he’s a Drake Shifter with claws, fangs, and eyes that glow like embers in the dark.
He says he can fly me across the desert…
But first, he demands my blood—and not from anywhere innocent.
He bites me on my thigh, and the pleasure is like fire licking across my skin.
Now I can feel him inside me… even when he’s not touching me.

I thought I was just using the beast to save my family.
But the longer we travel, the more I realize—he’s not the monster in this story.
And I’m not sure I want to be saved.

What to expect from Mistress of the Red
‣ Possessive dragon shifter hero
‣ Virgin princess heroine
‣ Magical blood-bond & biting (in very sensitive areas)
‣ Forced proximity quest fantasy (only 1 bed)
‣ Fated mates, enemies-to-lovers (he hates her...but he wants her)
‣ Monster romance with spice (because his Drake gets involved)
‣ Fairytale with heat (you won't believe what the wicked witch makes them do together)
*Doing it in Dragon form ; )

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

IRENA

We have a beast chained in our basement.

I say “basement” but it’s really more of a dungeon—a dank, dark space with stone walls so ancient and damp they have moss growing on them. The only light filters in from a gap in the stones high above, so narrow it can hardly be called a window. It smells of rot and the squeaking of rats can be heard along with the steady drip-drip-drip of water in a corner somewhere.

It’s cold down here—so cold it makes me shiver in my court gown, which is low cut—the better to show my shoulders and bosom to any possible suitors.

Not that I have any.

I am “too plump to be fashionable and not pretty enough to make up for it”—at least according to the other ladies of the Court, who like to smirk behind their fans at me. But none of them are with me now—none of those delicate, bird-boned Nobles with their pale skin and stick-thin figures would dare come down into the dungeon and see what I am seeing.

For standing in the middle of this grim place is the beast—the one I must tame.

I stand in the shadows and watch him…trying to work up the nerve to do what I must do. But my heart is pounding and the silver ring I wear on my right forefinger feels heavy and cold—filled with ominous promise.

He is huge—almost seven feet tall with muscular arms and a broad chest. Well, really all of him is muscular—a fact I can see well enough since he’s completely naked.

I am a gently bred lady—a princess, in fact. It’s wrong for me to look upon a naked man—and well I know it. My chaperone, Miss Mistral, would swallow her tongue if she knew what I am doing.

So, for propriety’s sake, I do my best not to look between the beast’s muscular thighs, where a long shadow hangs nearly to his knees. Instead, I try to concentrate on the top part of him.

He’s tall and broad shouldered, as I said, and he has long, tangled black hair that hangs down, covering part of his face. But I can still see his angry eyes through the strands—glowing red like living coals and filled with fury.

It’s no wonder the beast is angry—around his neck is a thick silver collar inscribed with runes which glow faintly blue with magic. It’s the same magic that imbues the chains which hold him prisoner. Joined to thick silver manacles around his wrists and ankles, the chains glow with runes as well…and so does the silver key I have clutched in my hand.

The key that can free him.

I can’t believe I’m contemplating this—that I’m actually thinking of freeing the beast and trying to tame him to my will. I must be mad.

You probably shouldn’t do this Irena, I lecture myself. It’s not safe—you don’t have the strength.

The silver ring on my finger throbs, as though in agreement with my thoughts.

But what choice do I have?

None.

As I stare at the bound and chained beast, my mind replays the conversation I overheard before dinner tonight, the conversation that convinced me this is my only course of action…

1

IRENA

“I am sorry, Your Highness, but I fear your Royal mother has not long to live.” The Head Healer’s voice sounds mournful—he loves my mother, as do all the people of our kingdom.

Good Queen Lorraina has ruled our land with a steady, even hand ever since the death of my father, King Ferrand, two years before. Her kindness and good judgment have earned her such sobriquets as “The Queen of Wisdom” and “Queen Lorraina the Just.” Truly, when she fell ill with the mysterious wasting sickness—the same one that carried my father off—the whole country knelt in prayer for her.

My older brother shakes his head sadly when he hears the Head Healer’s words.

“Ahh, why does death stalk those we love so dearly?” he asks, his voice laced with melancholy.

My brother is a fine figure of a man—he’s nearly ten years older than me and wisdom already sits upon his shoulders. He has silver-green eyes—as do all those of our Royal bloodline—and though he is not yet middle-aged, his sable hair is thinning at the temples. But that doesn’t lessen his attraction to the ladies at Court—all of whom hope to be his bride. Whoever wins that honor will instantly become a princess—or soon, if the healer’s words are true—the queen of all our lands.

But surely he must be wrong—I can’t lose both my father and my mother in the space of only two years, can I?

I choke back tears as I listen to them talk, well hidden in the shadow of the decorative statue of an angel, servant of the One True Goddess. It guards my mother’s rooms, white marble wings outspread, and makes an excellent hiding place for someone like me who wants to know the truth.

They find her on the Mother Noelle. A captivating, curvy, mature woman running from a desperate past, she’s there to lecture on various Earth holidays. But when she agrees to accompany them to Therim Five to fulfill a prophecy—one that promises to fuse their bond and bring her into their lives forever—the stakes become lethally high.
Now, trapped in the darkest corners of the galaxy, the three of them must fight as one. Burns Hot and Shines Bright will have to prove they are worth risking everything for—or lose their chance at the Twin-Bond, their destiny, and the woman who belongs to both of them.

**Author’s Note—since Burn and Bright are NOT related, there is a bit of sword crossing in this plus-length novel. (In other words, there is a tiny bit of MM action in this mostly MFM book.) If that’s not for you, please don’t buy.
Thanks! Evangeline

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

NOELLE

“Damn it! I can’t…quite…reach.” Noelle Rodriguez stood on her tiptoes on the step ladder, reaching far above her head to try and place the glittering gold star on the Christmas tree. She was almost there…the tip of the tree was in reach. Now if only she could manage to slip the bottom of the star over the spiky topmost branch…

Suddenly her center of gravity shifted and she felt the rickety stepstool she was standing on tilting under her. Before she knew it, she was falling, heading straight for the hard metal floor below.

“Madre de Dios!” she gasped, waving her arms frantically, as though she could suddenly learn to fly.

The ground rushed up to meet her but at the last minute a pair of strong arms scooped her up and she found herself being cradled close to a broad, muscular chest.

“Whoa there, my lady,” a masculine voice murmured, and a pair of hazel-green eyes looked down at her worriedly. “Are you all right?” the huge Kindred warrior asked.

It was Shines Brightly—Bright for short. He was a Twin Kindred—a Light Twin to be exact—and he had the sandy brown hair and easy, open mannerisms to prove it. In fact, truth be told, Bright was kind of a flirt, which always made Noelle’s stomach flutter, even though she was sure he was just being nice.

After all, why would a seven-foot tall, handsome, muscular warrior who was ten years younger than her want anything to do with an over-forty divorcee who wasn’t exactly thin? In fact, she was afraid she must be hurting his back, although he held her as though she weighed next to nothing.

“I…I’m fine. Just clumsy, that’s all.” Noelle tried to laugh but it came out shaky and weak. She couldn’t help thinking she’d never been this close to the Light Twin before and up close, he smelled really good—like clean clothes and cedar and some kind of masculine spice that reminded her of the ocean.

Also, he showed no interest in putting her down.

“You’re not clumsy, that stool is too unstable,” he observed, frowning down at the stepstool, lying on its side on the floor as though it was a disobedient dog. “What were you doing up there, anyway?” he asked her. “You don’t need to stretch to reach the topmost branches—let Burn or I do it for you.”

“Oh, you don’t have to—”

“Burn,” Bright called, before she could even finish her sentence. “Come here—we need you.”

Burns Hot, another Twin Kindred, came over to them. He was a Dark Twin, which was easy to tell by his thick black hair and beard. His eyes were so dark they looked like endless pools of midnight. Noelle had never been close enough to the big Dark Twin to be able to tell if they were black or just really dark blue.

To be honest, she found Burn rather intimidating. Even aboard the Kindred Mother Ship, which was filled with seven-foot-tall alien warriors, he stood out in a crowd. He was a head taller than every other male on the ship, for one thing. And there was something about his eyes—a kind of spark far back in their darkness that hinted at hidden violence. Also, he talked only rarely, in a deep, rumbling voice that seemed to resonate through Noelle’s whole body whenever he spoke to her—which wasn’t often. Burn was something of a silent giant—he also wasn’t Bright’s brother.

Twin Kindred always came in pairs—they were together from womb to tomb, living in the same household all their life, sharing a wife and children, and often dying on the very same day. But neither Bright nor Burn had a twin…which was possibly why the two of them had formed such a close friendship, Noelle speculated. She almost never saw the two of them apart.

She knew that Bright had lost his twin at birth but she wasn’t sure how Burn had lost his…and she was too intimidated by the huge warrior to ask him. Not that he talked much—Bright usually played the interpreter for his enormous best friend. He seemed to know what Burn was thinking and often answered questions for him.

“What happened?” Burn asked now. The words seemed to be pulled out of him, as always, and his voice was a low rumble, like boulders rubbing together at the bottom of a riverbed.

“Noelle nearly fell,” Bright explained. “She was trying to reach the top of the Christmas tree.” He looked down at her. “Why were you doing that, anyway? It looks fine to me.” He nodded at the strings of white twinkle lights and the many colorful ornaments that decorated the tree.

“I was trying to put the star on top,” Noelle explained. She was still somehow clutching the star in one hand and she gestured with it. “It’s the finishing touch.”

She told herself she wished that Bright would put her down…but deep down, she didn’t really want him to. She liked being close to him—he smelled so good. But she was probably hurting his back. “You should put me down,” she said to him. “I’m too heavy for you to keep holding me like this.”
A dark prince. A forced marriage. A dragon bond that could change everything.

I never asked to be sold to the royal family—or to be married off in some bizarre, ancient ritual. My new husband, the Crown Prince, made it clear I wasn’t wanted. Fine. I didn’t want him either.

But his older brother? The one they keep locked in the shadows? He’s the one I can’t stop thinking about.

Xaren is all hard muscle, brutal scars, and growled warnings. He says his Drake is too dangerous—that I’m safer far away from him.
Too bad the Queen has other plans…

She orders me to his bed, demands I give the kingdom an heir—and soon.

Now I’m trapped with a man who thinks he’s too broken to touch me… and too dangerous to want me.

But every time we’re alone, I see the truth in his eyes.
He burns for me…just as much as I burn for him.

Bride of the Black Dragon is a spicy, slow-burn romantasy featuring a tortured, scarred alpha, a curvy heroine with forbidden magic, enemies-to-lovers heat, Dragon Shifters, dungeon shadows, royal politics, and a twist you won’t see coming

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

ELAINA

“Well? You heard me girl—open your robe! Let us see your assets.”

My future Mother-in-Law, Queen Virelda snaps her fingers at me—as though I am some kind of dancing bear she’s paid to amuse her. Beside her, my husband-to-be, Prince Dorian, stifles a yawn. His golden hair gleams in the rays of sun shining down from the arched window above. I wonder if he’s positioned himself there on purpose, just to achieve that effect.

If he has, I wouldn’t be surprised.

I haven’t been in the Royal Court for two days yet, and already I’m regretting that I have come. Not that I had much choice. My father sold me to the First Family, who had bought me because of our pure bloodlines.

My silver-blonde hair and triple-ringed irises (lavender, green, and a thin ring of gold around the outside if you’re interested) mark me as one who can bear sons indwelled by Drakes. And since the might of the Kingdom lies in the ability of the Royal males to shift into those huge, fire-breathing monsters, keeping the bloodline going is extremely important.

Coming to the Royal Citadel has been a rude awakening for me. I was raised in a small mountain town where my family are the only Nobles for miles around. Here in the Citadel, Nobles are everywhere, rustling in their rich robes and gowns, smelling of expensive, musky perfumes and wearing elaborate headdresses that show their rank. Most of them look down their noses at country bumpkins like me.

But none of them has my bloodlines, so I am accorded at least a small measure of respect. Except from my husband-to-be and his family, who seem to actively despise me.

“Come, girl.” Queen Virelda snaps her fingers again impatiently. “Let us see what we bought. My husband paid a ridiculous amount for you.”

“But why do you need to see me naked?” I ask, stalling for time.

I’ve just been through a very uncomfortable examination with the Court Physician—an elderly man with a long white beard and fingers like icicles. He determined that I am indeed “intact” and that no man had lain with me before—an important detail since virginity must be assured before a Drake prince can be conceived.

Of course, he knows nothing about my brief flirtation with our stable boy back home. Roderick and I did things that weren’t strictly proper, but I was careful to save my virginity. I had no wish to be beaten and cast out in the street—which was what my father had threatened should I become “impure.”

So I kept my past to myself while the old man poked around inside me, asking nosy questions and demanding to know if I was “chaste.” He has no need to know the details of my love life—fleeting as it has been.

I breathed a sigh of relief when he finally allowed me to sit up and close my robe. I had thought that the internal exam would be the worst part of the process—I had no idea that my future Mother-in-Law and my husband-to-be would ambush me as I left the Court Physician’s rooms and demand that I show them my “assets.”

“We need to see if you’re healthy,” the Queen says. “Now come—open your robe.”

“But…but it isn’t proper for my husband to see me naked before our wedding night!” I protest. I’m not especially shy, but I don’t like people I barely know seeing me in the nude.

However, Queen Virelda clearly isn’t in the mood to accept my excuses.

“Insolent girl! I will be the judge of what’s proper. Open your robe now or I’ll call a servant to tear it off you!” she snarls. “And if I have to do that, I’ll have you beaten afterwards!”

Feeling that I would rather undress myself than have someone else do it, I reluctantly untie the sash of the silk robe I am wearing and spread it open, baring myself for the both of them.

I am wincing in embarrassment as I open the robe, worried how my husband-to-be, Prince Dorian, will react. I have only ever let the stable boy see me naked and that was only briefly. He got so excited that the bulge in his trousers grew enormous and I had to fend him off…which led to the end of our brief relationship.

But my soon-to-be husband barely even glances at me. His pale blue eyes flicker over my naked body and then he yawns—as though I’m boring him—and looks away.

Queen Virelda, on the other hand, is staring at me with narrow, judgmental eyes, scanning my naked body for flaws.

“Well, you’ve certainly got child-bearing hips,” she remarks tartly, her thin upper lip curling in disgust. “And you’re definitely more on the chubby side—built like a peasant, I’d say. I’ll tell the servants to withhold your dessert until you slim down a bit.”

Wait—dessert is my favorite part of any meal! And it isn’t like I’m huge—I’m just “big-boned” at least according to my mother. I prefer to think of myself as “curvy.” I have full breasts and full hips and thick thighs but that doesn’t make me ugly—I also have fine, silky skin without a single blemish on it. And as I said before, the sight of my naked body has driven at least one man into a frenzy of lust.
The Monster under her bed isn’t leaving until she moans his name…

Hi, I'm Danni. I came to Hidden Hollow with nothing—no husband, no magic, no hope. Just a middle-aged widow clinging to a dead life and an eviction notice.
Then I found a key.
And a door to a town where it’s always autumn, the air smells like cinnamon and leaves, and magic isn’t just real—it’s waiting for me to claim it.

Now I have a cottage of my own, new friends, and the stirrings of power I never knew I had.
But there’s something else waiting for me too…
A Monster.

Shadow used to live under my bed when I was a scared little girl. Now he’s massive, growly, and very real—at least at night. He says he was born of my magic, shaped by my need, and he’s never stopped watching over me. Loving me. Wanting me.

And if I’m brave enough to love him back—to let him claim me in every way—he might become real for good.
But something dark is rising beyond the edges of Hidden Hollow, and the town’s protective magic is starting to fray. If I want to save the place that’s finally started to feel like home, I’ll have to stop hiding from my power.
And surrender to the monster who’s always belonged to me.
Because in Hidden Hollow...anything is possible.

What to expect in this cozy, spicy Monster love Curvy, middle-aged widow discovers she’s a witchProtective monster who’s loved her since childhoodFated mates & magical bondingCozy, small-town autumn settingSentient cottages, magical groceries, and Creature neighborsOral worship, tail play, and kn0ttingWomen uplifting women, female community, love and acceptanceDeep emotional intimacy, found family, and second chancesA spicy, comforting monster romance with teeth, tenderness, and heat

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

DANNI

In my dream, I walked through the dim cottage, wondering if it could really belong to me. The warm smell of fresh baked bread teased my nose but instead of the sunny kitchen, I found myself drawn to the shadowy bedroom.

The door was already cracked and it creaked as I pushed it all the way open. Inside was a massive four-poster bed covered in a familiar, checkered quilt.

I recognized it as one my grandmother had made. It was always on my special bed in her house when I came to visit her but I hadn’t seen it in over thirty years. Now, here it was again, looking as fresh and clean as it had the last time I’d seen it, when I was only ten.

I leaned over to touch the quilt and that was when I heard it. A deep, dark voice rumbling from under the bed.

“At last you’ve come home, my little witch. I can’t wait to hold you again…”

1

DANNI

THE DAY BEFORE

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Forester, but I’m afraid there’s nothing left,” the lawyer said.

“Nothing except a mountain of debt,” I muttered, looking down at my hands.

They were nice hands—the nicest thing about me, actually, with slim fingers and tapered nails. The rest of me was showing my age. I was in my forties with no kids, no friends, and now, no husband.

Life had officially passed me by.

A glance at the reflection in the mirror on the wall showed a tired looking woman with long, curly dark hair that had glints of silver that hadn’t been there even a few months ago. The patches under my eyes looked bruised—the last few months with Craig had been brutal and I had been his only caretaker. He was gone now, though and I hardly knew what to do with myself.

That’s not true—I knew what I had to do—I had to go back to work. But since I had quit my job as an office-manager to nurse my husband while we lived off our savings for the past three years, I didn’t think my old employer would be very eager to welcome me back. I was going to have to find someplace else to work to try to pay off the mountain of medical debt my husband’s losing battle with prostate cancer had left me with.

“I’m very sorry to mention this right now, but you need to know that all your investments are depleted and the bank account is empty,” the lawyer told me.

“Yes, I know.” I sighed and ran a hand through my messy curls. “So there’s nothing left at all?”

I couldn’t imagine going out to look for a job only a month after my husband’s death, but it seems that was what I’d be doing. Time to brush off that resume and get out there.

The thought made me feel so tired I wanted to cry.

The lawyer’s eyes softened slightly. He was a family friend—well, a friend of Craig’s anyway—and I could tell he felt sorry for me.

“I’m sorry, Danni,” he said, losing the formal tone. “But it’s all gone. There was one thing Craig left you, but I don’t know how helpful it will be.”

He slid a large white envelope across the table to me. It clinked softly and for a moment I had a flash of hope—what if my late husband had left me some jewelry I could pawn?

But when I ripped open the envelope, the only thing I saw inside it were two keys. One was big and brass with an elaborately carved head. It looked like it might unlock an ancient castle or maybe a set of those huge gates you see blocking the long drive that leads to a mansion.

The other key was smaller, more like a house key, and it was strung on a chain like I was supposed to wear it around my neck.

I looked at the two keys in silence for a while before asking the lawyer,

“Do you have any idea where these go to?”

He shook his head.

“I’m sorry. All I know is that the envelope was in your husband’s paperwork along with his will.”

I turned the envelope over again and saw that it had my name written on it—but not in my late husband’s handwriting, which had been tiny and precise. These letters were flowing and beautifully formed—the kind of cursive you just don’t see anymore. It looked vaguely familiar, but I didn’t know why. I was just too tired to think about it right then.

“I’m sorry,” the lawyer said again, and I could tell that he meant it. “I wish I could help.”

“It’s all right.” I shook my head and dropped the keys back into the envelope. “I’d better get going.”

“All right, well…” He made a helpless gesture and stood to offer me his hand.

I shook it and nodded before heading out of his office. Even though it was late in October, it was still horribly hot outside, so I hurried down the walk. I had to get home to…but then I remembered I had nothing and no one I really had to go home to. Craig wasn’t there anymore. He didn’t need me to give him his medicine or feed him or change him or give him a sponge bath. He would never need me again.
I started as his prisoner...I never expected to become his obsession...

Curvy schoolteacher Lexi is desperate—her uncle owes twenty thousand dollars to a ruthless loan shark. To save him, she agrees to a risky interview with a stern, brooding Beast Kindred scientist on the Mother Ship. But Dr. Brandt doesn’t just want an assistant…he wants a test subject. The first thing he demands? To see her breasts.

When Lexi balks at the idea of being taken to a dangerous alien planet for his research, Brandt kidnaps her. She’s the only female with the rare biology to produce “golden nectar”—the substance he needs to cure cancer—and he’s not about to let her walk away. Against her will, she finds herself carried off to Bio-Terius Centra.

What starts as a mission for science soon turns into something far darker and hotter-- a k1nky milking experiment that leaves Lexi torn between fury and forbidden desire. Brandt disciplines her when she’s naughty, pleasures her when she submits, and soon she can’t tell if she’s his prisoner, his experiment…or the one woman who might be able to tame the Beast.

But Brandt swore a sacred vow never to take another bride after his wife’s death. Can he resist claiming the one woman who tempts him to break every promise he ever made? And will Lexi survive being…Kidnapped by the Beast?

A dark, dirty, emotional Kindred Tales Full-length novel—with alien abduction, fated mates, a curvy heroine, m1lking k1nk, br33ding heat, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a stern Beast Kindred Dom who can’t let go.

**Author's Warning--there is some dark material in this book, specifically in chapter 29. I'm letting you know now so you can skip that part if you want to. It's intense, but I promise everything turns out all right in the end.
Hugs and Happy Reading!
Evangeline

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

ALEXANDRA

“Show me your breasts.”

“Excuse me?” Alexandra Tatum—Lexi to her friends—stared up uncertainly at the huge Beast Kindred looming over her.

To be fair to Dr. Brandt, she was sure he didn’t actually mean to loom. It was just hard to avoid since he was seven feet tall and extremely muscular. His air of austere dominance wasn’t helped by the fact that he was wearing a white lab coat which made him look stern and aloof.

Her prospective boss also had thick black hair which was pulled back and gathered at the nape of his powerful neck, making her wonder how long it actually was. He was a Beast Kindred and his eyes, gleaming like pure, melted gold proved it.

Lexi had never seen a Kindred wearing a lab coat before but then, she hadn’t seen many Kindred warriors at all until she had come up to the Mother Ship for this job interview.

But now she was beginning to wonder what kind of job she was interviewing for!

Her best friend, Natalie—who had married a Blood Kindred and moved to the Kindred Mother Ship not that long ago—had told her the job had to do with some kind of hazardous duty on a distant and dangerous planet.

“That’s why it pays so much,” she’d explained, when Lexi had called her up crying, asking if she knew of anywhere she could make a lot of money quickly. “It’s like combat pay or something. But why do you need money all of a sudden, Lexi? Are you having trouble paying off your student loans?”

As a matter of fact, Lexi’s student loans were a crushing financial burden. She should have known better than to get a Masters degree in 18th Century English Literature. But she had chosen to follow her dream of becoming a professor at an Ivy League school and spending her life sharing her love of literature with like-minded students.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t get a job at a reputable college without first earning a Ph.D. And that was going to cost so much more than the Masters she had earned, Lexi was afraid she would be buried in debt for life!

So she had put her dreams on pause for a little while to get a job and try to pay down the debt—which was how she found herself teaching high school kids, most of whom didn’t know Jane Austen from Alexander Pope and cared even less.

It was a soul destroying job, mainly because the school district Lexi was in kept putting more and more restrictions on teachers and paying them less and less, but she kept at it, chipping away at her student debt a little at a time. She was paying twice the regular payment every month and hoping to be debt free and able to start her Ph.D in a few more years.

The only reason she was able to keep paying so much, though, was that she had moved back in with her Aunt Helen and Uncle Herbert. The kindly old couple had raised her after her parents died and when Lexi had admitted the predicament she was in, they had welcomed her back with open arms.

But none of that was why she needed money so badly—it was her Uncle Herbert’s debt she was worried about paying now, not her own.

Lexi still shivered when she remembered the scene she’d witnessed when she had followed her elderly uncle through the rain last Wednesday night. Uncle Herbert had been acting cagey and looking extremely anxious for months. So when he snuck out to his old pickup truck without telling either Aunt Helen or Lexi where he was going, Lexi had felt compelled to follow.

She didn’t know what she expected to see. Uncle Herbert was too old to be having an affair and he wasn’t one to gamble or drink more than a beer or two at a time. So she’d been surprised when she followed him in her beat-up Honda Civic and found herself on the wrong side of town at a rundown dive bar called Bad Intentions which was known for having some pretty rough customers.

Lexi had kept her raincoat zipped and the hood up as she trailed her elderly uncle through the bar. Neon signs flashed on the walls and the atmosphere was thick was cigarette smoke and the smell of cheap whiskey and stale beer.

Uncle Herbert had gone straight to the back of the bar and walked around a corner, presumably leading to the back room. Confused about what he was doing, Lexi had followed him, keeping to the shadows and stepping lightly on the balls of her feet to keep from making a sound.

Down a dark hallway she saw a dim light shining. Uncle Herbert went down the hall and turned the corner again and Lexi crept after him, staying in the shadows until she could peek around the second corner.
